FROM THE MCQ CHAIR—ZEEDA MAGNUSON As I write my last newsletter, I can’t believe how quickly this year has flown. It has been such a pleasure to serve as your president for 2016. MCQ is in such capable hands because of the wonderful board. Your MCQ board has done a tremendous job in bringing great programs, special events, national teachers, stellar exhibit spaces, has partnered with other quilt guild partners, and has kept us all informed and eager for the next adventure. If you haven’t served on a board, please think about joining this one. Specifically, please consider being a part of the Exhibits Team. Exhibiting our collective work is great for MCQ and for quilting in general. All three 2016 team members Barb Bonifas, Karrie Flater, and Sally Mortenson are ending their service on this committee. However, they are leaving the Exhibits committee in great shape with venues and opportunities for 2017 in place. So, the new Exhibits committee will be able to follow the process already laid out. Barb, Karrie, and Sally set a standard of making lighter work with a team. We want to continue in that, so we are looking for a team of three people to serve for 2017. Plus, Sally Mortenson will remain on the board (in a new position). Knowing Sally, she will gladly share advice and counsel when needed. Please let me [email protected]; or Carol Mashuga [email protected] know your interest in an Exhibits position. I hope you enjoy the rest of your fall, and that you find plenty of time to create and play within your studios. I look forward to seeing your great show and tell items over the next several meetings. All my best, Zeeda

2017 MCQ Challenge: We humans love small things- babies, kitties, miniatures. Think about how small we are in the universe when looking up at the night sky. HGTV has shows about small houses- which are 200 sq. ft. or less. It’s fascinating to see how creative people are in designing their tiny places to live. We also love things that are BIG. Like going to see the biggest boar (usually about 1100 pounds) and the biggest pumpkin 1143 pounds this year at the State Fair. Standing at the bottom of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial looking up at him- he’s 19 feet tall. Or how about the World’s Largest Ball of String located in Darwin MN; it's 12 feet in diameter. Now, it’s your opportunity to think about something small; something big; or both. Yes, it’s time to start thinking about the 2017 Challenge- Big and Small. Submission form, due dates, sleeve instructions and other requirements will appear on the web site after November 1.

Butternut and Apple Harvest Soup (make ahead and refrigerate) Recipe By:cynjne

Ingredients 2 tablespoons butter 2 large leeks (white and

pale green parts only), chopped 1 large onion, chopped 1 large potato, peeled and cubed 2 cups cubed butternut squash 1 cup diced carrots

1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick 1 quart chicken stock 1/4 cup dry white wine (optional) 1/2 cup light cream 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons chopped chives

Directions Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in leeks and onions, and cook until the onion softens and turns translucent, about 5 minutes. Add potato, squash, carrots, apple, and chicken stock. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the vegetables are soft, about 20 minutes. Carefully puree the soup in batches in a blender, or use a stick blender to puree the soup right in the pot. Once the soup has been pureed, return it to the pot and stir in wine and cream. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper; simmer gently for 5 minutes. Ladle into bowls and garnish with chopped chives. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED © 2016 Allrecipes.com
