INTRODUCTION

Another year has passed and it is time to assemble all of the reports and items of interest so that the annual report will reflect the happenings and history of the MARS Associates operating year 2015 (March 2015 through Feb 2016). This report is intended to keep you, the MARS membership, informed on what occurred during the year and to provide a historical record that will be available to anyone in the future. If you missed an event, you can still read about it in this report. You can also learn about the Association’s financial health and the activities of our many clubs. We are very thankful to Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company (LMSSC) for its support as we continue to enjoy an excellent working relationship with the company. MARS membership is also open to retirees from United Launch Alliance (ULA) and we have established a similarly excellent working relationship with that company. We hope you enjoy reading the following reports that will highlight this year’s activities.

MARTIN AEROSPACE RETIREMENT SOCIETY (MARS)

ASSOCIATES ANNUAL REPORT

MARCH 2, 2016

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Duane Del Duca

As we move past our 30th year, MARS Associates continues to provide social, educational, recreational and self-improvement organizations for retirees and significant others of Lockheed Martin/United Launch Alliance (ULA), and their predecessor companies. The strength and endurance of these organizations is dependent upon the wonderful support and participation of all of their employees and retired members. I want to commend and thank all MARS members for the active support you have given the company, the community and MARS Associates this year and over these many, many years. WELL DONE!! My report will provide a summary of the activities of your MARS Officers, Board of Directors and MARS Clubs during fiscal year 2015. It will also be summarized at the Annual Meeting on March 2, 2016. The purpose of this meeting is to obtain approval of the minutes of our 2015 Annual Meeting and to introduce your new Officers and Directors. Outgoing Officers, Club Presidents and Directors will be recognized so we can thank them for giving our organization so much of their time and effort over the years. This also gives you an opportunity to voice any suggestions or recommendations to these individuals. Finally, we will present any changes in the Bylaws and Policy Manual approved this year by the Board of Directors. The five major events as summarized below were held this fiscal year, 2015. Bob Lines, our VP of Activities, is largely responsible for the planning and implementation of these events. He was assisted in the Rockies Game planning and execution by Linda Stearns, our secretary. Barbara Espinoza, your VP of Membership, also played a very important role in the success of these activities. Details of each of these events are contained in the VP Activities section of this report: • Annual Meeting - The 2015 meeting was held at Pinehurst Country Club on March 4. There were 185 members and guests in attendance. After the business portion of the meeting we all enjoyed a very informative presentation by Trevor Kilpatrick, describing the United Launch Alliance Delta IV booster and how it performed during the Orion mission test. This was especially interesting since the year before we had heard how the Orion Multi-Purpose Vehicle is being kept alive by Lockheed Martin. • Colorado Rockies - On Wednesday June 10, 2015, 60 MARS members and guests enjoyed a Coors Field picnic lunch followed by a baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the St. Louis Cardinals. The location of our seats was exceptional and the weather was great; unfortunately, the Rockies lost. Not to worry - there is always next year. • Senior Luncheon - This event was held at the Inverness Hotel this past year on July 8. We had 177 Senior Members (age 75+) and guests attend this event, including 23 members who were 85 years old or older. The photograph of the 85+ year olds that appeared in the July, 2015, STAR is a living testimony to the wonderful spirit and endurance of MARS members. • Fall Picnic - The formula again changed, no rain. What a gorgeous September day. This year’s date, September 2, proved to be the perfect selection. Those 318 in attendance enjoyed the good food of Bennett’s BBQ, a multitude of door prizes awarded as usual, with Leo Johnson going home with the top prize of $300, and the fellowship of many of our friends in MARS.

• Holiday Celebration - The 2015 Annual Holiday Celebration was a mid-day luncheon event again this year and was very well attended by 237 members and guests. It was held at Pinehurst Country Club this year. The Holiday Spirit could be felt as we all reacquainted ourselves with many of our friends and co-workers. Ted Bornhoeft had the opportunity to take many candid photos that were included in the January, 2016, STAR. Photos from all of the MARS events are posted on the website. Treasury Summary Report: Larry Stearns, our Treasurer for 2015, maintains the MARS budget and monthly income and expense activity. Our balance on February 1, 2016, was $10,547.40. Our 2016-17 Budget has a projected income of $40,645 and expenses of $41,530. Our goal is to maintain a reserve of $10,000 and to continue to provide quality events to the members at a fee well below the actual cost incurred. Even though you will see a slight increase in the amount for individual events, the budget for this year again estimates a significant member subsidy over the actual per person cost for the five events. Vice President, Activities – Bob Lines was very busy in planning and arranging our major events for 2015. He spent many hours and many miles making all the arrangements as well as always being on site to insure the success of all of the events. Added thanks are extended Barb Espinoza and Larry Stearns for their efforts in receiving and processing event reservations, and to Linda Stearns for arranging the Colorado Rockies baseball event. Vice President, Communications – Bonnie Snodgress was in charge of Communications in 2015. Bonnie, with the assistance of Bob Snodgress, did an outstanding job of coordinating activities associated with providing information to the members via the quarterly and special mailings of the MARS STAR newsletter and associated Company and MARS Associates events. In addition, under her leadership, we had a very successful volunteer program (coordinated by Judy Nielsen) providing support to LMSSC on numerous occasions, as described below and detailed in the Volunteer Team Report section of this Annual report. Bob's idea of having a single point of contact (Ray Ziehm) for the Historian article in each STAR proved to be very beneficial. The articles have been absolutely fascinating. Vice President, Business – Dave Boggy was active in 2015 coordinating our MARS benefits programs, including Dental and Vision insurance plans, and numerous discount programs with area merchants. He assured that our non-profit status reporting was done on schedule with the state and federal agencies. Dave was also involved in the nomination process for available Board of Directors and Officers positions for terms beginning 2016 as well as the 2015 Volunteer of the Year selection process. Vice President, Membership - Barbara Espinoza was in charge of all membership activities and she reports that we have 1470 current members (as of February 3, 2015) with 888 of these being senior members. This includes 40 members who attain senior member status on March 1, 2016. We now have MARS members in 41 states. We have a serious challenge ahead of us to recruit new members during the coming year. We are still working diligently with our heritage companies in an attempt to put MARS in front of new retirees. President-Elect – Robin Valore has been learning the responsibilities of the President and has been busy as the primary interface with MARS club presidents. She and I have been active in attempts to expand the membership. She has been working with ULA’s website managers in placing MARS information in front of their employees as they contemplate retirement or as they leave ULA upon retirement. We hope to incorporate this information into Lockheed Martin's retirement information package/website. She has also been attending the Lockheed Martin Retirees Groups meetings with me and other Officers or BOD members in Colorado Springs in an attempt to expand our membership. She has

participated with me in the quarterly meetings with the Vice Presidents of Human Resources for Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and for United Launch Alliance. Historians – Ray Ziehm continues to be our Historian lead, coordinating the quarterly write ups with a variety of contributors on an ad hoc basis. The contributors for the past four STARs were Ray Ziehm in January and April, Paul Bingham in July and Bill Cossaboom in October. They have written some very interesting articles that have appeared in the MARS STAR and have been posted on our website. Our historian committee also accepts articles and memorabilia from MARS members and others. This material is cataloged and stored in our MARS room at Waterton. MARS Website - This site is facilitated by our website committee comprised of Jim Kummer (Webmaster), Linda Stearns, Duane Smetana, Bob Knickerbocker, and Paul Bingham to coordinate changes/additions to the MARS website. The website contains very useful information about all facets of MARS. Be sure to check it out. Just follow the menu on the upper left and select the area you wish to look into. Jim Kummer keeps the web site current at all times. 2015 MARS Clubs, Presidents

MARS Clubs provide MARS members with an opportunity to join fellow members involved in activities where they have common interest. Each Club had a great year, and each Club President developed a brief overview of their activities that can be found in subsequent pages of this Annual Report. We want to thank all of the Club Presidents for doing an outstanding job this year. We invite more members to get involved in our club programs. The list of clubs and the club presidents for 2015 are: Bridge Club Presidents David and Kathy Martz Dinner Club Presidents Skip and Pam Hull Golf League President Frank Garred Hiking Club President Sue Janssen Photography Club President John Chapter 2015 MARS Officers and Board Members

The 2015 officers and board members were as follows: Officers Directors President Duane Del Duca Larry Major, Chairman President Elect Robin Valore Dick Sosnay VP Activities Bob Lines Dan Ellerhorst VP Business David Boggy Bo Rodriguez VP Communications Bonnie Snodgress Terrie Hamen VP Membership Barbara Espinoza Al Sanders Treasurer Larry Stearns Secretary Linda Stearns Historian POC Ray Ziehm

A large part of our communication success is attributed to our STAR editors, photographer, memorial coordinators and volunteer coordinator who are as follows: STAR Editors, Memorials and Volunteer Coordinator: STAR Editors Tom Pighetti and Linda Shupe (Retired) Photographer Theodore Bornhoeft Memorials Bev Baugher Volunteer Coordinator Judy Nielsen Newly Appointed MARS Officers and Board Members for 2016 I would like to introduce the newly appointed Officers and Board Members for 2016, as follows: Officers

President Robin Valore President Elect Stacey DiMercurio Vice President, Activities Jennifer Schmidt Directors

Don Purkey Bill Wise Leadership Recognition

Now, I would like to highlight and thank those individuals that served our organization and will be vacating their positions. I want to thank Robin, Bob, Larry, Terrie and Linda for their contributions over the past years. They have helped make MARS a successful, smooth-running organization. Duane Del Duca President Robin Valore President Elect Bob Lines Vice President, Activities Larry Major Director Terrie Hamen Director Linda Shupe STAR Editor Member Volunteer Recognition Your MARS Organization has been busy this year. As you know, we are a volunteer organization, and it is difficult to get volunteers for positions. The Officers, Directors, Club officers, and many more volunteers are required to support the administration of MARS, the five major events, and the six active clubs, in order to serve and support MARS members. Our Communications media, including the Web Page, our quarterly mailings and special mailings, and the Quarterly MARS STAR are all supported by volunteer work. Additionally, MARS supports many Lockheed Martin/ULA activities with volunteer help. All of those individuals that either held a position, were a volunteer for the MARS organization in 2015, or supported Lockheed Martin or ULA activities are to be commended for doing an outstanding job. I encourage other members to get involved and consider giving a little of your time to your organization by volunteering for a MARS position, participating as a volunteer for these events and clubs, or form new clubs if the demand exists to do so. We need your help if we are to continue to grow and function successfully.

Some of the many volunteer activities and the MARS members and spouses are: • MARS ASSOCIATES COMMUNICATIONS – STAR Mailing and Special Mailings including Senior

Luncheon. • LMSSC & ULA WORK - Wellness Fairs (Waterton and Deer Creek Facilities), Health Fair and

Diversity Connection. • Volunteers who helped on the MARS STAR and other MARS & LOCKHEED MARTIN SPACE

SYSTEMS COMPANY projects are shown below. Please note that many members participate in more than one activity:

Ted Bornhoeft, Barb & Duane Del Duca, Robin Valore, Ralph & Carole Dergance, Barbara Espinoza, Roy & Anita Kannady, Bob & Jean Lines, Larry Major, Gene & Doris Cody, Dave & Kathy Martz, Meta & Lewis Moses, Bo & Pat Rodriguez, Allen & Sally Sanders, Bob & Bonnie Snodgress, Linda Stearns, Bart & Diane Wright, Karen Paulsen and Judy Nielsen.

Judy Nielsen coordinates the volunteer activities for these endeavors. If you are interested in helping out, please give Judy a call. Her contact information is in the MARS STAR, page 2. My thanks from MARS to Judy and all her member volunteers! MARS Associates members were also engaged during 2015 in other voluntary events involving community activities, including working with school age children. These include STEM, GESTEM, (Girl’s Exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Science Fair Judging and the Link to Learn program. Volunteer of the Year Recognition

I want to thank the MARS members that nominated candidates for the Vernon B. Selby Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award this year. We had a number of members nominated for this coveted award. Dave Boggy, Business Vice President, convened a committee to evaluate the nominee applications and select the finalists. His committee then selected from the finalists the winner for the 2015 Vernon B. Selby Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award. Memorial Gift

Each year the MARS organization presents a donation to a charity in memory of those members who are no longer with us. Our treasury was well enough in 2015 that the Officers recommended, with approval from the Board of Directors, that a Memorial Gift of $1320 be given to Toys for Tots.

PRESIDENT ELECT’S REPORT

Robin Valore

2015 has been another active and successful year for MARS Associates. Our existing clubs continue to provide enjoyable and meaningful activities to our membership. The Golf Club, under the leadership of Frank Garred, has delivered another successful golf league season at our alternating venues between Broken Tee and Common Ground for our members. And, we continue to pursue our winter golf league as weather permits. The Dinner Club’s careful selection of tasteful restaurants continues to be very popular. We had a change in leadership during the 2014/2015 year and the club’s success has not missed a beat. Skip and Pam Hull led the excursions for the dinner club in 2015 and the participation has resulted in record-setting attendance at each of the venues selected.

The Bridge Club, under the leadership of Dave and Kathy Martz, continues to add participating members to socialize and compete in playing bridge. And you don’t have to join as a couple; single players are more than welcome to join. If you’re interested in enhancing and/or displaying your photography skills, the Photography Club, under the leadership of John Chapter, is a splendid resource. The Hiking Club, under Sue Janssen’s leadership, is flourishing at a fast pace. Each excursion is creatively planned and is easy enough for anyone interested in exploring the many trails available in Colorado. Congratulations to the leaders of each of these clubs for their dedication to ensuring their individual success. If you are interested in organizing any other club, give me a call and we can work through the details or see the MARS Policy Manual (Section IV.4 (a)-(d)) for guidelines. Our major events – the Annual Meeting, the Rockies Game, the Senior Luncheon, the Annual Picnic, and the Holiday Celebration, were enjoyed by all attending. Our goal again this year was to improve on the membership's experience and attendance at these events. These events present an enjoyable opportunity to catch up and reconnect with your former co-workers and/or longtime friends. We welcome comments on how we can make these events even more appealing to more members. Give any Officer a call with your input. As you can well imagine, it takes many active and willing members to run the MARS Associates organization and its activities and events. In addition, we provide a great deal of assistance to LMSSC and ULA through our volunteers. Accordingly, there is a constant need for members to step forward and assist in supporting an array of activities within the organization. Therefore, I am asking you to contact any of our officers, directors, and/or club leaders and ask “what can I do to help”. We can always use your participation to enhance the activities that are provided by the Association to you, our members. We continue to meet with the LMSSC/ULA Vice-Presidents of Human Resources to explore better ways to expose MARS Associates to those prospective retirees from the companies and to maintain the excellent communications link and the relationship with Lockheed Martin/ULA. This year we were able to partner with the ULA HR leadership to introduce a unique space on their Diversity Website that provides a link access to MARS Associates. We believe we have experienced an up-tick in ULA MARS membership because of this enhancement. The link provides a brief summary of MARS Associates to prospective retirees as well as an assortment of additional information relative to MARS, to include the membership application for those interested in joining. Our goal is to propose the use of a similar link on the Lockheed Martin retiree website in 2016 in order to better advertise the benefits of the organization. In addition, LMSSC is running periodic announcements informing active employees about MARS Associates on its E-TV system as well as on their Denver operation website. We are also providing several copies of our most recent MARS STAR to both organizations and have been told they are “disappearing off the racks”. We continued to maintain our interface with an informal Lockheed Martin retirees group in Colorado Springs made up primarily of Lockheed Martin retirees from the IS&GS organizations of Colorado Springs, Philco, Ford Aerospace, and Loral. Some are members of MARS also. In addition to developing interfaces and exchanging information with this organization, we had representatives attend their two annual luncheons. They had a very good turnout and we enjoyed the food and fellowship of the organization. The development of this interface has already resulted in some new MARS memberships.

I want to add my thanks to all the Officers and Directors, Club Presidents, other MARS Associates members who have volunteered their time to help the MARS causes, and everyone who has participated in the MARS events, MARS clubs, and the surveys for information that we occasionally run. I look forward to my continued service as I assume my position as your President in the upcoming year. In order to rise to the challenges that lie ahead in sustaining a viable MARS Associates, we need your continued and increased participation in support of our major events, club activities, and, most of all, lending your talent in leadership roles as future officers and/or directors of the organization. BOARD OF DIRECTORS (BOD) REPORT

Larry Major, Chairman of the Board

Your Board over the past year consisted of myself, Dan Ellerhorst, Bo Rodriguez, Dick Sosnay, Terrie Hamen and Allen Sanders. Next year’s Board will include the current members except for me and Terrie Hamen. I want to thank Terrie for serving on the Board. Incoming Board members are Don Purkey and Bill Wise. Both will make great additions to your Board of Directors (BOD). In addition to the new BOD members, the Officers/Board Selection Committee successfully recruited Jennifer Schmidt as the Vice President, Activities, and Stacey DiMercurio as President Elect. Since there were no other volunteers for the open Officers and BOD positions, these appointments were approved, as required by the MARS Bylaws, by the BOD at the January 2016 joint Officers and BOD meeting. Welcome to all the incoming Board of Directors and Officers and thank you for volunteering. While talking about candidates for open positions for both the BOD and Officers positions, I would again appeal to MARS members to consider volunteering for open positions. Every year it seems there is a shortage of candidates for what can be a fun and rewarding experience working with our retiree population. The MARS BOD, in their oversight responsibility, worked closely with President Duane Del Duca and this past year’s Officers to keep your organization in excellent functioning order. The Office of the President and all of its Officers, have done their best to keep the MARS overall objective of making this Association the best social and benefits provider for our members, Lockheed Martin and ULA retirees. Part of the responsibility of the BOD includes the approval of the Annual Budget and Bylaws and Policy Manual changes. For this coming year’s budget, the BOD kept to their objective to continue the coming year’s events as lower-than-cost for the members. To maintain this objective and maintain affordability to all members required some adjustments to the budget which your BOD approved. To assure the operation of MARS was conducted legally, and for the betterment of its members, the BOD was very conscientious in their review of the Bylaws and Policy Manual proposed by the President and/or Officers. This year some minor changes were made to the Policy Manual that allow the Officers to select the charity that will receive the MARS donation in honor of deceased members. The BOD thanks the MARS membership for their support of the many social gatherings and events and benefits over this past year. We hope that you, the membership, continue to find the MARS Associates organization a great part of your retirement life.

VICE PRESIDENT, BUSINESS REPORT

Dave Boggy

There were no volunteers from the general membership to fill the Board and Officers openings. An election committee was formed to look at members who could be approached to fill the open spots. The committee was able to find one member for each open office. The annual nomination of Board of Directors and Officers process was performed in December, 2014. The Board of Directors approved the nominations of these candidates at their January, 2015, meeting. Term of office is two years starting in March of each year. The roster of Directors and Officers for 2015-2016 is presented below.

The MARS Associates Benefits web page is always being updated/revised as new information becomes available. For instance, the Delta Dental and VSP pages have been updated to reflect changes in points of contact and the most current terms and premiums. Please look at the web page to find the most up-to-date information on benefits and vendor discounts. This year we will again be giving out the Vernon B. Selby Volunteer of the Year award. The guidelines and the nomination form were included in the January STAR mailing package. The intent of this award is to acknowledge the accomplishments of a MARS Associate by their contemporaries. The written commendation will also be published in the April STAR. This year’s winner will be identified at the Annual Meeting. VICE PRESIDENT, COMMUNICATIONS REPORT

Bonnie Snodgress

Bonnie Snodgress, with the assistance of her husband, Bob, served as VP of Communications for 2015. They were responsible for coordination of the activities with the Volunteers, and the MARS STAR. Linda Shupe, Tom Pighetti, Kathy Campbell and Bill Cossaboom, were the MARS STAR editors, and they did a fabulous job putting all the news and pictures together for the four issues we sent out this year. We were able to increase the size of the pictures we publish in the STAR and hope you all enjoy the new format. The MARS STAR is a difficult job and we want to thank all the editors for doing such a stellar job getting the newsletter out. Production and distribution of the MARS STAR and other related materials mailed out each quarter is a lot of work and involves all the Officers and the Club Presidents. Everybody in the club looks forward to and enjoys getting that large brown envelope filled with all kinds of information each quarter. A super "army" of volunteers performed the task of stuffing and preparing the envelopes for mailing. We typically have around 1600 envelopes which weigh a total of over 800 pounds. Another very special and important member of the team, who deserves special “thanks", is Barbara Espinoza. Barbara is responsible for generating all of the labels we use for the envelopes. It is a very time consuming job because these have to be sorted by Zip Code since we use Bulk Mail to reduce the cost.

It was a very busy, active and fun year, thanks to all the people who made our job possible--especially the Officers, Directors, Club Presidents, Volunteers, Karen Paulson and her replacement, Ashlee Ryan, and Reproduction Services from Lockheed Martin Space Operations. A very BIG and special thanks goes to Judy Nielsen, who managed the group of MARS volunteers for the MARS STAR mailings, the Health Fair, the Car Show, and other Lockheed Martin and ULA events.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Larry Stearns

The yearly audit of the Club’s books was conducted per the Bylaws last spring (2015) by Skip Hull. There were no findings. The audit of the 2015-2016 year will be conducted after the current fiscal year ends. The books were balanced up to the February 2016 treasurer’s report. Your MARS Associates organization goes through a budget determination and approval process every operating year. The actuals for Fiscal Year 2015-2016 and the budget for Fiscal Year 2016-2017 are shown below. Per the direction of your Officers and Board of Directors over the past few years, we have successfully reduced the surplus in the MARS account to comply with IRS limitations for our organization. The reduction was achieved as we significantly subsidized the cost of our events during the recent years. MARS will continue to significantly subsidize events although they will be more in-line with their costs.

VOLUNTEER TEAM REPORT

Judy Nielsen, Volunteer Coordinator I must open this report with a plea. It is difficult to get volunteers for some positions, so I would encourage each of you to consider giving a little of your time to our organization. We need your help if we are to continue to grow and function properly. I have listed some of the many volunteer activities and the MARS members and spouses who have given graciously of their time in 2015.

Bob Lines

In 2015, we sold 2 shirts for a total of $53.90. There is one black cap in inventory on hand. To review the cap and shirt selections, go to www.marsretirees.org, scroll down on the home page and click on Caps and Shirts. WEBSITE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE REPORT

Jim Kummer, Webmaster The MARS website (www.marsretirees.org) is administered by a small, dedicated group of MARS member volunteers: Jim Kummer - Webmaster Paul Bingham Linda Stearns Bob Knickerbocker Duane "Smitty" Smetana The responsibilities are shared among the group so no one individual is overburdened with duties. The committee has produced a "how to" document that details the procedures for administering the website. This document is made available to any new committee members to quickly give them the knowledge they need for the various tasks. Committee members administer the web pages from their own home computer via their Internet connection. The committee meets once a month for a luncheon meeting. Recommended changes and enhancements to the website are discussed, to make the website more valuable to MARS members. Committee members propose their recommendations for the "site of the month", an external website that the committee members believe the MARS members at large will find interesting.

There is a wealth of information on the MARS website. The committee members keep current the MARS club schedules and event notices. Announcements are posted regarding retiree benefits, funeral notices, new MARS members, and volunteer opportunities. An email address listing of MARS members who elect to be posted is kept current on the website. Also found there are the MARS policy and bylaw documents, and a MARS membership application. Frequently a slideshow of pictures from the most recent MARS event is available for viewing. The website committee welcomes suggestions to improve the value of the site. Members' suggestions should be directed to Jim Kummer by email ([email protected]) or phone 303-986-3966. MARS ASSOCIATES CLUB REPORTS

Exercise? Bridge is one of the few games that stimulates and exercises both the left and right sides of your brain. Every time you play, you use – and improve – your skills in communication, logic, math, memory, visualization, and psychology. It is a unique type of mental workout that is both relaxing and invigorating, and cannot be duplicated by any other leisure activities. Although the MARS Bridge Club welcomed some new players this year, we lost one of our cherished friends and bridge players this year: Fred Ems. The Bridge Club meets the third Friday of each month at the Buck Recreation Center in Littleton playing party bridge from 10 AM to 2 PM. Along with couples, we welcome singles. Bring your lunch, since we take a break around noon to eat and socialize. We typically have four to seven tables each month. The names of the month’s top winning couples are available on the MARS web site and in the quarterly MARS STAR. We provide coffee, tea, hot chocolate, hot cider and hot water. In December, we had our annual potluck lunch to celebrate the holiday season. The officers for 2015 are shown. DINNER CLUB ANNUAL REPORT

Skip and Pam Hull

The Dinner Club enjoyed yet another excellent year as we continued to add to our very diverse list of local restaurants. We continue to welcome suggestions from the Club members and have added them to our list. We focused on luncheons, which are the preference of the group with a couple of early dinners to allow for daylight hours for driving. This report covers the period from January, 2015, through December, 2015.

The Dinner Club attendees continue to be very pleased with the quality, quantity and diversity of food offered by all of these restaurants. The image and reputation of the Corporation within the Denver area have most certainly allowed the Dinner Club to maximize the benefits to the members. This has been an enjoyable year for Skip and Pam Hull, Co-Presidents of the Dinner Club. We continue to evaluate our events with input from our attendees, by the number of attendees, and our experience with the Management and staff for each event. Your support of the Club will ensure the continuation of the very enjoyable and cost-effective MARS Associates Dinner Club.

GOLF LEAGUE ANNUAL REPORT

Frank Garred

This was a normal year of weather challenges for MARS Golf. We had snow early in the season and rain later on. We continued play between Broken Tee in Englewood and Common Ground in Aurora. Our League championship was played on August 13 and 20th with both prize money and trophies given to the various winners. John Flemming was the League Champion with lowest net score and Paul Boykin was the Medalist with lowest gross score. Congratulations to them and all the other winners throughout the year! The weather was good for our Championship play and the courses provided a true but reasonable challenge. We are set this year, 2016, to play Broken Tee. Most players liked Common Ground but felt the drive to the course took too long, so we will be playing one course this year. Managing a golf league is only possible with the help of a lot of dedicated individuals. As in past

years we had such a group. They were Don Petermann - Vice President, Tom Cooke - Treasurer,

Tom Hall - Handicap Chairman, John Flemming - Tournament Chairman, Bob Bowe - Tournament Chairman, Duane DelDuca - Tournament Chairman, and Bob Knickerbocker - Web Chairman. In addition to these men who worked every week, we had two regular members for each tournament who verified, or solicited, as needed, the players for their week’s tournament. I found that this approach not only makes our league possible but also more enjoyable as we get to know everyone in the league and feel that we individually contribute to league success. 2016 is here and we will be holding our annual league meeting at Broken Tee on March 3, at 10:00 AM. I want to encourage all MARS members who enjoy the game of golf to join us this year. We would like to encourage women to join so we may expand the league, as it has decreased over the years. You will find friends from work who like to talk about past projects and to get fresh air and some exercise at the same time. If you have any questions, please call Don Petermann (our 2016 Golf Club President) at 720-984-4975 or Tom Cooke at 303-995-2923. I would like to extend an

invitation to women members or spouses who enjoy the game to contact Don regarding play in the league. Again, if you are interested please call Don or Tom. GOLF LEAGUE FINANCIAL REPORT 2014 Beginning Balance as of 1/1/2015: $1,286.41 Balance as of 12/31/2015: $1,187.22 HIKING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT Sue Janssen

This report covers the period from January through December 2015.

The MARS Hiking Club continues to serve membership in Colorado. Objectives of the club are:

• Accommodate various levels of hiking

• Provide regular hiking opportunities for MARS members

• Find new hiking buddies

• Emphasize the health aspects of hiking

• Provide a safety net to fellow hikers (especially experienced hikers helping new hikers)

• Focus on day hikes

No club officers are necessary. Sue Janssen is the club Point of Contact (POC) and will report to MARS officers as necessary. Club members participate in planning outings and volunteer to be the point of contact for each hike. No budget is necessary as members cover their own expenses and provide their own equipment. The club will hold two planning meetings per year: one in the spring for the summer schedule and one in the fall for the winter schedule. Events are nominally held on the third Wednesday of each month but may be changed due to weather or other circumstances. Eleven hikes were planned for 2015. The club members enjoyed 9 hikes; 2 hikes were cancelled due to weather. The difficulty of the hikes ranged from easy to moderate. See the table below for a summary of the hikes.

Date Location Attendance

January Caribou Ranch cancelled

February Jones Pass 7

March Rocky Mountain NP 8

April Montezuma to Sts John 6

May Three Sisters 3

June Willow Springs 15

July Lower Cataract Lake 15

August Brainard Lake 12

September Caribou Ranch 9

October Ken Caryl cancelled

November Waterton Canyon 7

Outings have been planned for January, February and March in 2016. Club members volunteer to take the lead in organizing hikes and providing that information to members.

Information about club events is distributed to all MARS members via a “Hiking” page on the MARS website as well as through articles in the STAR. Club members correspond primarily with email.

Page 22: NEWS OF OUR PAST YEAR - mars · PDF file1 NEWS OF OUR PAST YEAR-2015- ANNUAL REPORT Prepared by: Your MARS Associates Leadership Team Dated: MARCH 2, 2016 Sponsored by LOCKHEED

22

In August, Sue Janssen created a google group, “[email protected]” to facilitate correspondence with club members. Sue maintains the group list. Permissions allow any member to send email to all members or post a reply. After the expected start-up glitches, this seems to be an efficient means to maintain a current email distribution list. Below is an image showing recent posts.

Membership is growing! We had 37 members in January 2015. The roster is currently 45. Sue Janssen attributes the success of the club to the enthusiastic involvement of the members, willingness of members to plan and organize outings, and recruitment through the MARS webpage as well as STAR articles and photos. Allen Sanders contributes success to the post-hike lunch. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT

Photography Club Background Information The goal of the MARS Photography Club is to provide a meeting place for like-minded people interested in photography and photographic arts. Our informal club goal is to have fun and provide an educational opportunity to help improve our photography. Club members vary from beginners to more advanced photographers. Today every person who travels and vacations carries some photographic equipment, perhaps a smart-phone or a digital camera, to record the adventures that they would like to share with family and friends. Perhaps some of us aspire to enter one of the several local Photography Exhibitions. Seeing what others are photographing can help broaden our outlooks. If this sounds like you, please come to one of our meetings and join our club. We would love to have you participate, it is free, and all are welcome. The MARS Photography Club meets at the Littleton Bemis Library, located at 6014 S. Datura Street, in Littleton, Colorado, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM, in a downstairs meeting room. Our current meeting schedule is January, February, March, April, May, (no meetings June, July, August), September, October, and November. There is no meeting in December, as we have a Holiday Luncheon at a local restaurant. Our meeting programs and presentations often include travelogues presented by our club members or outside people. We strive for a program mix of educational, entertaining, and related subjects. Our

educational programs include how-to software, artistic and conceptual subjects. Our goal is that we all would like to improve our photography for all levels from new photographers through advanced. We strive to answer any photography/equipment questions you may have. Our members provide input and their ideas on all of the club activities. Changes and updates in club procedures and activities are discussed and then voted on by all club members.
