The One That Got Away I should have reached out to the association but instead I reached out to the National keepers of all that is Smokey. When I saw the golden Smokey on eBay for sale, I could tell that because of its de-sign it was one of the very early issues. The pictures included showed that the plaque was not engraved so it was never issued. How someone came to own this is a mystery. The price at $375 was a bit more that I wanted to invest at the time and was hoping “they” would use some of the royalty monies collected to obtain this and keep it in good hands. This was not something they wanted or could do and by that time it was sold when I went back to bite the bullet and buy it. I contacted the seller and thru them the buyer and offered a bit more than was paid but to no luck. Was told the buyer was going to replace the plaque and give it to youngster who likes the out- of -doors. I am sure it will be loved but know they will never know what they have and the significance of the statue.
Here's a new Smokey doll available from the Smokey Bear Museum in Cap-itan, New Mexico. Jean Cunningham at the Museum says the doll is "ugly, yellowish", but he doesn't look bad to me and I figure he's still collecti-ble! Plus I'm a softie for anything from Capitan. 12" doll is $20, 8" $10.50, key chain size $8.00, plus tax and ship-ping. Phone number for Museum is 575-354-2748. Maybe this doll is sold other places too, but it was the first time I'd seen it and thought maybe you'd like to see it too. Karen
Smokey Overalls
In April’s newsletter I asked for help in finding information about a certain piece
of a child’s Smokey clothing. Although I did not receive any response from our
members, I did get a solution here at home. I was asked again to have a prevention
display at this year’s drive thru at PA. Forestry’s Roaring Creek State Forest, This
year the same lady who had given me the swatch of material last year showed up
with the pair of Smokey overalls. She said the more she thought about the overalls
it made her think she may still have them. This made her go look in her attic and
found them. Naturally I offered to buy them, but they are not for sale since her
mother had made them in the garment Factory and thought maybe her son would
probably want them later in his years. She did take my card and would call me if
they decided to sell them. Jim & Nancy Shaffer

The Central Region will be hosting a Smokey in the
Ozarks 2 gathering on June 10, 2017 at the home of
Jackie and Roger Schmidt, 8948 Otter Drive, Neosho,
Missouri. We are hopeful that we can get as many
members as possible together to buy, sell, trade, and talk
about Smokey Bear. We will be having BBQ, snacks,
and, hopefully, some fun door prizes. Please feel free
to contact us with any questions or to let us know you
will be attending! We will be getting some motel rates
in the Joplin area, as we live outside of Neosho. Please
mark your calendars now and plan to come to Southwest
Missouri to meet up with your Smokey friends!!! Our
e-mail address is: [email protected] ; phone
numbers are 417-592-0402 (Roger) or 417-592-2944
(by: Jackie).

THE SMOKEY BEAR
PATROL
Sometimes things work as
they are suppose to. Debbie
and I were in NY for the
Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade and during a trip to
Greenwich Village I saw
from a distance that ol famil-
iar “hat”. Smokey’s Hat …. but
boy it was not on our friend,
not even close. Having no
idea as to why the image was
used and not wanting to go in
and ask I decided to send the
image and info to the Smokey
Bear folks. They were quite
surprised to say the least and
this was the response I got
back.
Actually Fred, this time I can send
a cease & desist as they are adver-
tising a product/company with
Smokey’s image. It’s not just
sales of products, but advertising
a company, product, any-
thing. Where we cannot do any-
thing is when it is just used for a
flyer, as a cartoon, etc. As noth-
ing is being sold or advertised,
then it is not in violation.

Last year I was able to check seeing the International Falls, MN Smokey statue off my bucket list.
He was still garbed in his fishing vest from a recent tourna-
ment in town. I was surprised at how big it was. I stopped at a number of state and national
forestry offices on the way, taking pictures and picking up some Smokey items. There’s me
with the MN DNR Orr Office sign with the fire danger still at medium and the USFS Cook, MN
office sign with the fire danger at low.
By far the most interesting piece I saw was in the lobby of the Koochiching Historical & Bronko Nagurski museum next to Smokey Bear park. It is the tepee shaped wooden sign pic-tured. The wording, best I can make out below the badge says, “put your campfires out with water prevent forest fires Minnesota State Forest St. Paul Minnesota”. Is this something any-one else has seen? I wondered how old it may be. Tim Taylor
This is a recent photo from an elementary school group in NE Georgia. A Fire Prevention Team was working the area where large fires were occurring and spent time talking with local children affected by those wildfires. We provided the Smokey Bear face masks for handouts.

The future of our Association is in its gatherings, its newsletters and
its membership. While we all are not able to travel to all the gather-
ings we all can contribute stories, pictures and info to the newsletter
and we all can maintain our membership. Along with this I challenge
each of you to encourage at least 1 person/family to become a new
member for 2017.
18
Although it may -- or may not -- be possible to quibble with some of the details, I believe the es-sence of the story is accurate. The 1976 burial was supervised by Dick Cox, who happened to be the Forest Service res-ident fire staff officer in the area at the time, so he said the responsibility fell to him. I inter-viewed Dick at length at his home outside Capi-tan, and followed up with a few phone calls. Page 357 of Smokey Bear 20252 sets out the story Dick told me as it relates to the hunters. At my urging, Dick racked his brain for the names -- and searched his files for any ad-dresses -- of the hunters. He did come up with one name -- Otto Schulte, who I mentioned on page 357. I tried to find Otto, but since the only address I had was "Texas," or perhaps "Houston, Texas" I wasn't able to find him (and there was no internet when I was researching the book). Thus, to my disappointment I wasn't able to interview Otto and include more of him in the book.

On a cold November night in 1976 five Texans helped bury a New Mexico legend. Much is written about this iconic bear's life, but very little is known or has been shared about his burial. "Buried with little fanfare," it has been said, but there is a story to tell. All they wanted that night, forty years ago, was some cold beer and some hot food. Five Texas hunters from the Houston area had just driven down to the small town of Capitan from their camp site in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, wanting to finally enjoy a meal they didn't have to cook over an open campfire. "A hamburger," recalled one of them. "I just wanted a plain, good hamburger." But they would all experience quite a bit more by the time they returned to their camp later than night.
Well I was contacted by the Smokey Folks to see if I knew if the story depicted was true. I had heard some but not knowing any specifics I did think if anyone knew it would be Bill Lawter. I reached out to Bill and this was his response.

Otto Schulte, of course, is mentioned in the story. Some of the other details in the story differ from the details in my book, but I don't really think that detracts from the credibility of the story. For example, Dick told me there were two hunters; the story says there were five. Dick told me the hunters had been enjoying themselves in a road-house across the street from the park; the story says they were at the Smokey Bear Cafe. The story says the Smokey Bear Cafe is next to the museum; it's actually a block or so away. Dick said they buried the bear a little after 9:00 p.m.; the story says 10:00. At the time I inter-viewed him, Dick was thinking back about 20 years; at the time this sto-ry was written, the hunters were thinking back 40 years. There is a good chance someone missed a detail here or there. However, the essence of the story is accurate enough that I would accept it as true. In fact, I'm envious of the story's author, be-cause I would have loved to have interviewed those hunters and heard their stories, just as I loved interviewing people like Ray Bell, Don Han-sen and Jim Sorenson. FYI, speaking of Ray Bell -- he told me he was not at the burial. I hope this helps. --- Bill Lawter
Lesson Learned: Members of the Smokey Bear Association either know more about Smokey or know someone who does and we should be recognized as such. I think we are by some and we must find a way to hand off this knowledge to those Future Smokey Lovers. If it were not for the tremendous efforts of folks like Bill Lawter (author 20252) and a few others who have written down what it is they know or have been told all we would have is our “family” stories hand-ed down from genera-tion to gener-ation.
