Cripple Creek Ice Festival- How The West Was Made

A sculpture during the carving process the Friday night before the Ice Festival started. Photo By Jim Doss

Cripple Creek has put on the Ice Festival every year two weekends in February since before I moved up from TEXAS over 15 years ago or so. I believe we are so for-tunate we live in a community where rain, shine, sleet, or snow we have many yearly weekend events through out our area. I think back on all the years of all the different ice sculptures and themes, that the carvers have put their time, efforts, thoughts ,and talents to such an unique art. I have seen some years where the weather did not cooperate at all. It would be so cold one couldn’t determine between

the Ice sculptures or ice sculptors. The other cases scenario, so warm by the end of first weekend all the sculptures melted so much by the end of the first weekends Sunday, they would have more ice deliv-ered the next weekend and have to start over from square one. This year’s theme is How The West Was Carved . We all still have one more week-end to get ourselves up to Cripple Creek February 20 and 21 and check out this year’s ice festival.

Cripple Creek Ice Festival- How The West Was Made Imitation Is The Greatest Form Of Flattery

A sculpture during the carving process the Friday night before the Ice Festival started. Photo By Jim Doss

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”Charles Caleb Colton Born: 1780 Died: 1832 So the old saying goes although some may argue its truth. Charles Caleb Colton was officially credited for saying this first but the idea behind the quote has been around for centuries. When looking for any sort of definition or anyone to further explain this, there was not much available on the internet. One site even said that the meaning for the quote is “literal.” “This proverbial expression dates from the early 19th century, although versions of it that paraphrased the same thought existed well before then. The first of these alternate versions is found in a biography of Marcus Au-relius by Jeremy Collier and André Dacier, titled Emperor Marcus Antoninus his conversation with himself, 1708: You should consider that Imitation is the most accept-able part of Worship, and that the Gods had much rather Mankind should Resemble, than Flatter them. A nearer stab at the current version comes in a piece by the English writer Eustace Budgell in the newspaper The Spectator No. 605, October 1714: Imitation is a kind of artless Flattery. The full monty as far as this proverb is concerned was given by Charles Caleb Colton, inLacon: or, Many things in few words, 1820:

Imitation is the sincerest of flattery. Colton was expressing the same idea as Budgell, in that, to imitate is to flatter without necessarily being aware one is flattering. As such, that ‘artless’ appreciation has to be ‘sincere’.” Source: Phrases.org.uk So what exactly is this famous saying you have heard your entire lives referring to? Much of the information found on the world wide web is a lot of people doubting the idea this quote represents. One blogger even went on to say that it is definitely not true and that actually “imitation=irritation.” The idea behind this quote is that when someone imi-tates another, the one who is being copied is receiving the greatest form of compliment. If someone imitates some-one else it means that they like what that other person did enough to take effort to do it themselves. I think the reason everyone has heard this in their lives a million times is because sometimes (especially when you are an adolescent) when someone copies you, your instant reaction is to be somewhat offended and point your finger and say “Copycat!” Therefore, this quote is constantly repeated to us to remind us that when some-one is copying you they are really saying “good job! I like what you do!” We get reminded so that we make sure to always receive “copycats” well in that they are compli-

menting you and attempting to flatter you. Although as any quote, saying or idea there is always some cases in which it is false. But I personally think that the old saying has been so popular for so many years due to more of the reminder to take the copying as such. Sometimes, it feels as if when someone copies you their intentions are not flattery but rather just to taunt you. But you cannot have this thought in your mind you should always be sure to take someone copying you as the great compliment and “sincerest form of flattery” it is. I personally always have this in my head and love when others copy me or the things that I do. Especially, as in some rare cases, the person who copies you is well more experienced (in whatever aspect of you they are copy-ing) than you are. So the message today for everyone is to make sure you remember imitation = flattery and make sure to take it as that regardless of what the case may be.

As part of an outreach program to determine the needs of the neighborhood Charlotte and others got the chance to in-teract with children and adults in the com-munity and uncovered a need and desire for spiritual children’s classes open to all Faiths with an emphasis on virtues and the oneness of humanity. Charlotte wanted to provide children of all ethnicities and ages an activity to engage and better themselves. She first tried on Sundays but it didn’t work out, there weren’t many children attending. As she changed the date to Wednesday evenings, slowly kids began to pour through the doors of the Baha’i Center in Colorado Springs. At one point, classes ranged from toddlers to teens reaching 40+. After recently starting the program up again, there are already 15 children consistently attending classes at 4 pm at 1622 Rainier Drive. Patricia began taking classes with Charlotte years ago; she now returns as

an alumni to help with the many activi-ties throughout the evening. Fun begins as Charlotte and the gang practice sign language combined with interpretative dance and song. Next is a story to remind children to love everyone equally and treat one another with kindness and compas-sion. Crafts of some sort begins to end the night with a finale of dinner cooked homemade by the founder herself. Charlotte is a dedicated woman who instills important values in her children. Her oldest daughter teaches a virtues class to Nepalese children in Boulder and her youngest two attend regularly with her. If you’re interested in finding out more information about virtues classes in the Colorado Springs call Charlotte at 719-310-2151.

Starting at 9;30 a.m. on Staurday morn-ing February 13, people started lining up outside to greet the infamous Moose. To start the ceremony, the dancers from Dana’s Dance Studio broke out with a flash mob dance. Then you could hear the drummers coming from a distance. After they marched up to the crowd they enter-

tained with a solo. As they were playing the Moose arrived in a Roll Royce Limou-sine. After the Moose walked around and greeted the children the Tweeds’ doors opened for their famous sale. Later on that day a special bonfire was held to celebrate Woodland Park’s 125th Anniversary.~ By Trevor Phipps

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Wine and Beer Tastings Every Friday 4-6PM

Free Food and Music.

Sixty-four percent of American adults have a smart-phone, according to Pew Research Center, and that number is growing. Savvy smartphone users are doing a lot more with their devices than selfies. At the forefront of a smartphone’s benefits is on-the-go money management, which personal finance experts say can be a key tool to helping you achieve your New Year resolutions.

“Technology advances are giving banks an opportunity to further enhance their customers’ ability to manage their money,” says Brett Pitts, Head of Digital for Wells Fargo Virtual Channels.

Want to get a better handle on your money in 2016? Pitts offers some tips for making your smartphone your own personal banker:

• Go mobile: You may have used your phone to log into your account via your bank’s website. Check your bank’s mobile application offerings and download its mobile app instead. Using an app designed for device readability will make transactions easier and more efficient. When down-loading an app to your smartphone, make sure you’re using a trusted source. Make sure you download directly from your phone’s app store or your bank’s website.

• Review functionality: Mobile applications are always evolving and improving. Review your bank’s app func-tionality periodically to ensure you’re up-to-date. For

example, Wells Fargo just added several new features to its already robust mobile banking suite. Once enabled, customers can view balance information with its Fast-Look swipe feature, as well as be notified of transactions via opt-in push notifications (without having to log in with a username and password).

• Manage your money on-the-go: Use your bank’s free money management services like online bill pay, mobile check deposit and mobile funds transfer. Get peace of mind before heading out for holiday shopping. Before purchases, use your phone to check account balances and make transfers as needed in order to avoid overdraft fees.

• Add automatic account alerts: Preset limits for transac-tions and purchases, so you can be immediately notified when those limits have been exceeded. This will help you track your spending and prevent you from breaking your budget. You may also wish to sign up for other notifica-tions, such as when your card is declined, your balance drops below a certain threshold or a direct deposit posts to your account.

• Get reminded: Make late fees a thing of the past. Set up calendar reminders for credit card payments, mortgages and other bill due dates. Your bank’s app may also have a built-in reminder feature to help you streamline pay-ments.

• Keep contact details up-to-date: Make sure your bank knows how to reach you. For example, some banks notify customers of possible suspicious card transactions through text messages -- which allow customers to reply quickly to confirm whether the transaction is legitimate or not. More banking tech tips and resources can be found at wellsfargo.com/mobile. Thanks to new user-friendly technologies, being re-sponsible with your money is easier than ever. Be smart with your smartphone and use it to help meet your 2016 financial goals.
