Richardson gets set to expand into European market It’s good new for local pro- ducers. Richardson International Limited has announced it is expanding its grains and oil- seeds merchandising team by establishing international sub- sidiaries in Europe and Asia to enhance its ability to serve existing customers and develop relationships with new custom- ers in overseas markets. “With the open market for wheat and barley and the ac- quisition of 19 new grain fa- cilities across Western Canada, our volumes have grown signif- icantly over the last year and will continue to grow,” says Brent Watchorn, Executive Vice-President, Marketing. “Looking to the future, we want to establish a permanent pres- ence for the Richardson group of companies in key interna- tional markets to be closer to our evolving customer base and make the most of opportunities to expand our global reach.” Richardson has had a pres- ence in Asia for the last three years with a merchandising subsidiary in Hong Kong. These two new entities in Singapore and Geneva will enhance Rich- ardson’s ability to service new and existing customers in over- seas markets. “We are always looking for opportunities to expand our business and cultivate new re- lationships with buyers around the world,” says Watchorn. “These two ofces will give us the opportunity to build a stronger presence in Europe and Asia and will ultimately help us to bring more Canadi- an products to markets around the world.” On Monday, September 30, the Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division held its annual cross country race. Students from Yorkton, Melville and Theodore participated in the event. Nearly five hundred runners from grades 1-8 came out to en- joy the day and exercise their legs and lungs. The largest race was the grade 1-2 girls which had 99 runners. See results in the Thursday, October 10 issue of The News Review. Flu shots available ‘Tis the season. Saskatchewan residents are being encouraged to protect themselves against influenza this season by get-ting a flu shot. The publicly-funded seasonal influenza vaccine will become available across the province beginning October 21. All individuals six months of age and older will be eligible to receive the vaccine. “This is the fourth year we’re offer-ing the vaccine free of charge to all Saskatchewan residents over the age of six months,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan comments. “We want to ensure our residents have easy access to the flu shot and stay healthy during the flu season.” The vaccine will be available through public health clinics, physi-cians, and nurse practitioners across the province. Residents can contact their public health office, family phy-sician, nurse practitioner, Regional Health Authority, or call HealthLine at 811 to find the nearest flu clinic. Information on flu clinics is also available on the Regional Health Authority’s and Ministry of Health’s websites. “Getting the vaccine is an effective way to avoid becoming ill with influ-enza,” Chief Medical Health Officer

Dr. Saqib Shahab adds. “We particu-larly recommend the flu shot for people at high risk of influenza-relat-ed complications and those in close contact with individuals at high risk.” High-risk groups for influenza include: • people with chronic health condi-tions; • people 65 and older;residents of long-term care facilities; • people with severe obesity; and • children under five and pregnant women. Influenza is a contagious viral dis-ease of the respiratory system that can be spread by coughing, sneezing or touching surfaces like door handles and then touching mouth, nose or eyes. In addition to getting a flu shot, the spread of influenza can be limited through infection prevention meth-ods such as frequent handwashing, coughing and sneezing into the sleeve, cleaning surfaces often and staying at home when sick. For more information on the pro-vincial influenza immunization pro-gram, influenza symptoms and self-care, visit Ministry of Health’s web-site at www.health.gov.sk.ca or Healthline Online at www.healthlin-eonline.ca.

Sadly, we are a nation of people whose bodies are full of inflammation. Inflammation can occur from different causes, including a poor diet, unbalanced hormones, chemicals, bacterial or viral infections, and, of course, physical injuries.

INFLAMMATORY PROCESS

Inflammation usually accompanies damaged tissue. When cells are injured by any cause, var-ious chemicals are released. This process results in inflammation of damaged tissues that are rich in blood vessels. The inflammatory pro-cess starts when there is trauma to body tissues. It prevents the spread of injury, disposes of dis-ease-causing microorgan-isms and promotes heal-ing. The four main local signs of inflammation are redness, heat, swelling and pain. Often, there is also a loss of function. During the acute inflammation phase, repair mechanisms are put into place by the

immune system. Normally, healing should occur within eight to 10 days.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION

However, at times, the persistence of the infec-tious agents or the injured person’s weakness, or both, may postpone the healing for more than two weeks. Chronic inflam-mation may also develop from prolonged exposure to internal or external toxic substances.

Chronic inflammation may eventually lead to healing or to the forma-tion of granulomas, which are local inflammatory tumors or growths. Granulomas are typically found in diseases like

sarcoidosis and tubercu-losis.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

DIET

Certain foods are bet-ter than others for fight-ing inflammation, while certain foods actually cause inflammation. The best fruits for this pur-pose are cantaloupe, pink grapefruit, raspberries, strawberries and rhu-barb. The worst are banana and mango.

Con’t from Page 3.

The best vegetables are carrots, collards, garlic (Yes!), kale, onions, spin-ach and sweet potatoes. Avoid corn, white potatoes and especially French fries! Breads – The best are flour tortillas, mixed grain, pumpernickel and rye breads. The worst are bagels, English muffins, French or Vienna bread, Kaiser rolls and hot dog or ham-burger buns. Wheat, gen-erally speaking, is consid-ered very inflammatory. Pasta and Grains - The best are barley, couscous, kasha and rice noodles. The worst include corn-meal, corn pasta, millet and white rice. Oils - The best are almond, apricot kernel, avocado, canola, hazelnut, olive and high oleic saf-flower oils. Avoid cotton-seed, palm kernel and high linolenic safflower oil. Crackers, chips, etc. - The best are Melba toast, saltines and tea biscuits. The worst are corn chips, potato chips and pretzels. Nuts and Seeds - The best are almonds, cashews, flaxseed, pecans, and Brazil, hazel, hickory and macadamia nuts. There are no bad ones! Herbs and Spices - The best are curry powder, tur-meric, ginger and garlic. There are no bad ones here, either! Beverages – Calli is excellent! Other good ones are green and herbal teas, carrot juice, club soda and mineral water. The worst are soft drinks, lemonade and cranberry juice. If you eat fish, avoid farmed salmon. Choose wild caught salmon instead. Also avoid tuna and swordfish, due to mer-cury concerns.

NATURAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

OPTIONS

The well-known supple-ment, Max GXL, is very effective for lowering the

level of inflammation in the body. Therapeutic enzymes, taken between meals, can also fight inflammation very effectively. As well, there are some very valuable homeopathic remedies, taken orally, that can decrease pain and inflammation. They can also help to minimize the bad effects of injuries and promote healing. Homeopathic topical choices for inflammation include Arnica gel and R30 ointment. I find both of these to be excellent for reducing inflammation and pain and to assist the healing process. Certain essential oils are excellent for reducing inflammation, minimizing further tissue damage and speeding healing. Wintergreen, peppermint, clove and nutmeg essen-tial oils are all anti-inflam-matory Lavender and myrrh work well for inflamma-tion due to tissue damage and bruising. If inflamma-tion is due to a bacterial infection, tea tree oil and German chamomile are suitable choices. When inflammation is caused by a viral infection, raven-sara, hyssop and thyme are appropriate.

LOW INTENSITY LASER THERAPY

Last, but far from least, Low Intensity Laser Therapy is the treatment of choice to enhance the body’s natural healing processes. A light source is placed in contact with the skin, allowing the light energy to penetrate dam-aged tissues. It can be

curative, reducing or elim-inating pain and inflam-mation, while restoring normal function, as opposed to strictly reliev-ing symptoms. It is consid-ered totally safe and high-ly effective. Keep in mind that if you combine some of these natural anti-inflammatory options, you may be even more amazed and delight-ed with the results you get! An Iridology session can reveal the levels of inflam-mation in your body, plus many other pearls of price-less information, which could potentially help you to prevent many health problems! In order to celebrate my PhD graduation, I am offering Iridology Assessments for 79.00 (20% off the regular price of 99.00), for the month of October. Call 306-783-1261 weekdays, 9-5 p.m., to make an appointment with Dr. Gail for your per-sonal health needs. Also, this is your invita-tion to come and meet with me in person at the Yorkton Harvest Showdown from October 30 to November 2, where I will have a booth.

Dr. Gail Smolinski has completed her PhD in Natural Medicine. She is also a Registered Doctor of Natural Medicine, has her Doctor of Naturopathy degree and is Board Certified in both Traditional Naturopathy and Nutritional Wellness. In most areas of Canada, winter weather can signifi-cantly affect your life on the road and have a major impact on the condition of your car. While necessary on the pavement, salt and sand can wreak havoc on your paint job, leading to unsightly – and unsafe – rust, so preparing the exte-rior of your car to deal with the reality of the Canadian roads is impor-tant. In doing so, the con-ditioned exterior will act as a barrier between your paint and the harsh ele-ments, so you’ll have a much easier time washing away the grime over the course of the winter.

“A big part of ensuring

that your car stays in tip top shape throughout the winter months is cleaning and preparing your vehicle beforehand,” notes Dave Lambert, Brand Manager for Autolgym Canada.

Lambert shares the three essential steps you can take to properly clean your vehicle in advance of the winter months:

• Wash: Regular wash-ing when possible is ideal to remove the salts that accumulate, which will eventually deteriorate wheel arches and the car’s undercarriage.

• Polish: After washing your car, you need to pol-ish. A proper polish will

restore gloss to dull sur-faces and remove the appearance of light scratches and swirls from your paintwork.

• Protect: Waxing is the important final touch, and will seal in the finish achieved from polish, all the while protecting the car from abrasive winter elements such as salt, sand and acid rain. A product like Autoglym High Definition Wax will help to maintain clean, dry, blemish free paintwork.

Other important steps to prepare for winter driv-ing include:

Checking the health of your battery

Inspecting the condi-

tion of your windshield wipers

Topping up antifreezeChecking your tire

pressure and consider installing winter tires

Packing an emergency roadside kit

Keeping your gas tank as full as possible at all times

Cleaning and preparing your car for the winter roads with the above tips can help keep your car running smoothly through-out the winter season.

It is estimated that nearly 200,000 womenwill be diagnosed with breast cancer thisyear, and that more than 40,000 of thesewomen will die. Breast cancer is a threatto women of all ages, races and walks oflife. Even men are at risk for breast cancer, with approximately 1,700 men diagnosedeach year. These numbers remind us whyit is so important to know the signs, symptoms and risk factors of breastcancer. Early detection of breast cancer isthe best weapon against the disease, which means breast self-exams should beperformed regularly, with clinical breastexams every one to three years. Inaddition, healthy lifestyle habits likephysical activity, not smoking, minimizingalcohol intake and consuming plenty offresh fruits and vegetables can helpwomen reduce their risk factors.
