March is such a wonderful time of year! Everything appears to be new again as the change in weather is welcomed after the cold of winter. The early blooms fill each of us with anticipation of what is yet to come.

So much has happened in the first few months of this year and it is due in part to your generosity of both time and money.

We are wrapping up of the most successful Black Tie & Boots Gala yet. It took more than 3,200 volunteer hours to create the elegant decor. There was a record number of underwriters, partners and auction donors who stepped up to make this event a huge success. The Montrose Gala, Plateau Valley Spring Swing and the Delta Gala are all being planned with the same fantastic theme – HopeBlooms!

Our sister Hospice in Ilembula, Tanzania celebrated the opening of their new Palliative Care Center, thanks in part to the HopeWest Africa Partnership. Beth Brown, RN, was able to attend the celebration and the team in Ilembula was thrilled. They also appreciated the four donated suitcases of vitamins, medicine and supplies. It has been so exciting to see this partnership flourish over the years.

HopeWest continues to be deeply rooted in every one of the communities we touch. Thank you for inspiring hope in others and being a significant part in helping us continue to provide care to patients and families when they need it most.

Growth Creates Exciting Changes for HopeWest

HopeWest is off and running in 2017 with a lot of exciting things to report! We closed on the Compass Building in Grand Junction in January. This has been a long time coming and we extend a big thank you to everyone involved in helping make this happen. Plans are underway for the building, but construction will take place in phases, beginning in September.

The Pavilion at the Care Center Campus was completed late last year and is such a nice addition. We were already able to use it during ourLight up a Life event and can’t wait until it warmsup a little to be able and use it even more this spring.

New office/receiving/storage building

We received the official certificate of occupancy for our new office/receiving/storage building located at 3050 North 13th Street (right behind the Care Center in Grand Junction). Our facilities team is housed there as well as much needed storage.

We are very excited about these great things and there is so much more to come. Thank you for your continued dedication to HopeWest and our mission to profoundly change lives.

Former HopeWest Volunteer Now a Patient: Volunteer Work Comes Full Circle

For Bill Rhodes and Dan Wiseman, the love of the outdoors isn’t the only thing they have in common. “Bill and I share lots of laughs,” said Dan, HopeWest Patient and Family Support Volunteer. “He has experienced so much in his travels and when we get together he remembers the good-old-days. It’s fun to look back with him.”

Since Bill was admitted into the HopeWest hospice program, Dan has been making visits to him in the assisted living facility where Bill resides.

“Volunteers like Dan are important to me because he brings me happiness. Sometimes I’m down and he’ll show up just to talk,” said Bill, HopeWest Patient. “Dan understands and makes life a little more cheerful.”

Being a patient in the hospice program was not the first time Bill had interactions with HopeWest. Bill’s first experience with HopeWest was as a Patient and Family Support Volunteer, providing the same companionship to others that Dan now gives to Bill. “I had the same patient for almost a year and he and I became good friends. Much like Dan and I, he would talk to me about the past – his wife had heard these stories a million times, but they were new to me and that’s what made him happy,” said Bill. During his time as a volunteer Bill noticed that being a listening ear

for patients is helpful because patients can express fears and concerns that they often feel they can’t share with family members. It’s also important for volunteers to provide respite for caregivers who need rest and time to regroup.

“When my patient’s wife told me how much I meant to him, it was an amazing feeling,” said Bill.

The highlights of Bill’s volunteer work stick with him. He feels that volunteering was well worth the experience and the friendships that he made will never be forgotten.

“It was a good feeling knowing that I could help my patient have better days,” said Bill. “Giving back is so important because there are so many people

“I wanted one-on-one interaction with patients. The way I think of it is if this were my mom, I hope someone would be kind enough to visit her”

that are sick and lonely. When I got sick my patient even came to see me.”

Bill no longer serves as a HopeWest volunteer, but his experiences with HopeWest as a patient have also been positive. “HopeWest amazes me and all they do for patients,” said Bill.

Dan and Bill agree that what makes a great Patient and Family Support Volunteer is to simply be a good listener and to make sure that your patient’s needs are heard. As much as volunteers give, many are surprised at the knowledge, new perspectives and rewarding relationships they have receive during their visits.

Bill and Dan enjoy spending time together, going to lunch and going on drives around the valley together to get Bill out-and-about. During their time together they share stories about hunting, fishing and other outdoor adventures. Bill credits his faith, friends and Dan for his ability to cope with his

circumstances.

“What surprises me most about Bill is that he is still a giver. He is always looking for ways to help others – it inspires me,” said Dan.

“You inspire me too,” responded Bill.

I walked into this thinking I wouldn’t gain anything, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I’ve gained a friend. – Dan Wiseman, HopeWest Volunteer
