PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Power Moves

In this issue we celebrate Black Girl Magic! Today’s black woman is passionate, accomplished, entrepreneurial, motivated and much more. We shine the spotlight on 16 superstars. Detroit rapper

Dej Loaf graces the cover of the group of 16. She is confident and motivated in making power moves. Dr. Andrea Barnwell Brownlee is the inaugural director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Arts and one of few African-American women to hold such a position. Then there’s Dr. April Speed, one of the most sought-after surgeons and founder of Dr. Speed’s Global Breast Health and Wellness Center. Ginger Johnson and Liz Pickett are the dynamic duo behind Ginger + Liz Colour Collection. Their head-turning nail gloss is a favorite of Rihanna and Katy Perry. These women’s tales of trials and triumphs will inspire you!

Kudos also go out to Jim “First Down” Brown, this month’s Legend. His superman athletic achievements are well known, but just as impressive are his charity and gang peace mediation work.

Elsewhere in the issue, we highlight two places ripe for investing in luxury residential real estate: Las Catalinas in Costa Rica and Deep Water Cay in Grand Bahama. Find out what makes them so special.

Speaking of luxury, “The Hipster Hotel” details how top brands are bending over backward to deliver character, pizazz and perks to capture the discerning traveler’s attention.

Do check out our Conversations chat with sculptor Jallim Eudovic, who recently completed the last of five pieces that are on display in China. He talks of his excitement about public sculpture and how art is a vehicle for social change.

If you’re surprised that the first quarter of the year has nearly come and gone, get moving on all your plans and dreams.

1 Kontiki Beach Resort. This dreamy resort is a taste of heaven on earth. With private

cabin-style suites that boast personal decks engulfed in lush greens and palm trees, Kontiki is romantic, serene and easily accessible to the BLVD, one of the island’s hot spots for nightlife, dining and shopping. Skip over to New York Restaurant, a short walk from Kontiki, for tasteful cocktails and American fare.

2 Aquafari. The sea in Curacao is breathtaking. And Aquafari is the most intimate way of

experiencing it. Located on Pirate Bay Beach, Aquafari’s licensed deep sea divers take clients on an underwater scooter ride for an up close-and-personal 45-minute jaunt with tropical marine life.

3 Plasa Bien. In Willemstad, the island’s capital city, Plasa Bieu is the ultimate

open-air lunch market where tourists, business people and passerby meet for tasty local dishes. Oversized picnic benches give it a familiar, family feel while simmering Dutch pots hold fresh ingredients and homegrown recipes. Across the street from Plasa Bieu is the Floating Market, a stretch of boats and kiosks selling fresh fish, vegetables and homemade sweets.

4 Shete Boka. Shete Boka National Park is surrounded by enormous coral mountains

and thunderous crashing waves. Climb into the mouths of Shete Boka’s caverns and feel the ocean’s ravenous temperament.

5 Nena Sanchez is one of Curacao’s most celebrated fine artists. The former Miss

Curacao uses bright, brilliant colors to illustrate the scenic beauty of her Caribbean island.

Sanchez’s works can be seen on commercial buildings and intimate art galleries such as Jankok Plantation, MonArt and her own Nena Sanchez Gallery in downtown Punda.

6 North Sea Jazz Festival. Every September, Curacao welcomes international travelers

and worldwide stars and such as Usher, Lionel Richie, Bruno Mars, John Legend and Enrique Iglesias for three days of music and events.

7 Jaanchie’s Restaurant. No visit to Curacao is complete without a visit to Jaanchie’s, a

60-year-old local restaurant operated by Jaanchie himself. In a most personable fashion, Jaanchie sits with guests while taking orders by hand.

CuraCaoOne of Curacao’s greatest allures is its beaches. Massive enclaves with pristine white sands and azure turquoise waters are enchanting, while decorative Dutch-style architecture, cafes

and open-air restaurants add charm to the island. It’s rumored that in the near future, American citizens will not be required to have a work or residence permit to live and be employed on the island—exciting news for those seeking the pleasures of Caribbean life without the hassles of customs and immigration. As part of the Netherlands Antilles, this boutique island offers the

nuances of modern luxury mixed with an old-world artistic flair. By LINDA DAy

CANCUN, MEXICOWhen you’re ready for serenity, Cancun calls. Situated on the southeast coast of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun, with its white powdery sand beaches

and crystal-clear turquoise waters, welcomes weary souls. Whether you want to rejuvenate with adventure or relaxation, you’ll find what you need. Forget about what you’ve heard about

Cancun the party town. Yes, it’s that, but it’s much more. BY SheRYl NaNCe-NaSh

The Perfect MatchTerrence Jenkins, cassie VenTura, Paula Patton, Robert Christopher Riley, Lauren London, Dascha Polanco, French Montana, Brandy Norwood and Robin Givens are teaming up to head to theatres this month in The Perfect Match, a new romantic comedy produced by Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit Team, along with Terrence J. The film is directed by Bille Woodruff and written by Gary Hard-wick and Brandon Broussard, based on a screenplay by Dana Verde. In the film, Charlie (Terrence J) is a bachelor who’s convinced that relation-ships are dead even though his sister (Paula Patton), a therapist, tries to tell him otherwise. His best friends bet him that if he sticks to one woman for one month, he’s bound to fall in love. An unconvinced Char-lie takes the bet because he believes that he’s immune to love, until he crosses paths with the beautiful and mysterious Eva (Cassie Ventura). Does love prevail? Co-star Robert Christopher Riley states, “I am super excited about this movie and its awesome cast. It’s a feel-good movie with relatable issues that we as people encounter when we are in or developing a relationship.” The film hits theatres March 11.

Barbershop: The Next CutIt’s been more than 10 years since our last appointment at Calvin’s Barbershop, but the time has come for a new cut! Under the direction of Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday), Calvin, brought to life by Ice Cube, and his longtime crew are back in Barbershop: The Next Cut. Of course of favorite patriarch, Eddie (Cedric the Entertainer), is still present, and J.D. (Anthony Anderson) is introduced, but the most noticeable change is that the once male-dominated sanctuary is now co-ed. Rap’s newest femme fatale, Nicki Minaj, as Draya-and Regina Hall as Angie-bring an added level of excitement as charismatic, local hairdressers and Common, as Jabari, has added the “sexy” as Eve’s character Terri’s husband. While there’s a lot of lighthearted fun, the movie also ventures into more serious territory as the staff and patrons of the shop band together to fight rising gang violence in Chicago. Grab your crew and prepare for some shop talk that’s sure to make your head spin! — SB

Guess who’s back? Acclaimed powerhouse author, Eric Jer-ome Dickey, has returned to present an excitingly gorgeous new book, The Blackbirds, that he can expect to land on the New York Times bestseller list, where most of his 25+ works usually reside. The work is a new visit to what Dickey fans love most from his pen—romance, love, friendship and fabulosity. In The Blackbirds, we meet four best friends who have been through it all and stuck together when the going got tough, until now! With his incredible knack to capture the vibrancy of Los Angeles, the multicultural back-grounds of the characters and the presentation of the real nature of relationships, this read is a no-brainer for devoted Dickey fans and all lovers of decadent prose. — SB

Mr. MelodyThaddeus dixon doesn’T beaT around The bush abouT

A pop sensAtion once sAid “Let the beat hit ‘em, let the music take control” and twenty-five years later, the command couldn’t be more fitting than in the career trajectory of Michigan-born multitalent, Thaddeus Dixon. Having helmed sonic projects for the likes of John Legend, Neyo, Talib Kweli, Ginuwine, Teedra Moses, Deborah Cox and most recently, Bryson Tiller, the musician turned producer has only just begun.

Speaking coolly while enjoying an uncommon day off from his role as music director on Tiller’s Trapsoul Tour, Dixon realizes that he’s now living in his moment of reckoning and though it seems as though it was just a dream, knows his steps have to be well-calculated to get the ultimate result he desires – legend status. “I grew up in church around music, but I, honestly, never planned on it being my system of survival.” He recounts, “I had access to drums in church and I indulged in them whenever I could. I knew I was good, but it wasn’t until later that I saw the effect that my talent could have on the world if I dared to present it. From there I got the opportunity to play for popular gospel acts that came to sing at church and that’s really what set this thing off.” Passion and preparation gelled for the Detroit native when he earned a scholarship to matriculate in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, followed by a stint as an instructor at University of California Berkeley.

With education and enthusiasm in tow, Dixon got his defining moment when Detroit-based soul singers, The Spinners, requested his

skillset on the road for a tour, elevating his career like a climax in the middle of a perfectly executed symphony. Fast forward to today and the former pro-basketballer in the making has appeared on a bevy of television shows including Dancing with the Stars, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a duo of late night talk shows, contributed to noteworthy performances from pop stars like Meghan Trainor and played at Carnegie Hall and The White House. He reflects, “I’ve shared stages with Celine Dion and Pharell Williams and a lot of other musicians that I am in awe of and in those moments, I knew I was just as good and that there was a lane for me to drive in to get to my desired destina-tion.”

And driving he’s doing indeed as a part of the newly addictive genre of “Trapsoul” that he’s currently spreading to the masses throughout the U.S. “I’m enjoying making music with Bryson and even more excited about what’s to come. We’re redefining sound as people may know it and simultaneously offering classically good music that can live on forever,” he says. Our moment ends after we forget we’re on an interview and began to chat all things life-changing and elevating. “I’m working with new artists and giving a new thing to some familiar faces,” he offers. “I’m doing what I love to do and that’s all I can imagine doing at this point in the pursuit of success.” “What’s success,” I ask. “It’s being happy,” he offers and continues, “and I couldn’t be more.” Play on music man, play on.

J.R.R. Tolkien once said “Not all those who waN-der are lost,” and thank goodness for that because if it were so, I’d be missing! Why is this? Because I unabashedly consider myself a “WanderRoamman” (Get

it? A “Wander-Roam-Man”, derived from Wonder Woman, but for a man that travels. Sorry, I digress.)

In the last few months my version of home has morphed into a Herschel Supply backpack/weekender combination

and a Travelpro Rollaboard Suiter, as I’ve been plane hop-ping and becoming reacquainted with some awesome

domestic locals and collecting passport stamps at some exotically breathtaking international ones. From finding my zen in upstate New York and chomping off Marie Antoinette’s head in Miami to jamming to junkanoo drums in the Bahamas and finding scenic beauty in Bora Bora, ‘tis the season to see some world! Here I’ve gathered my most recent first-class forays and I’m letting you tag-along to learn where to sleep, eat, meet and a few things in between. Consider this your buddy pass to tag along, and hurry, boarding begins now!

Bespoke wigs are not only all the rage but rapidly becoming as essential as the little black dress. Not to be confused with the one-size-fits-all mass-produced sorts that flank the heads

of mannequins in your neighborhood beauty emporium, the modern wig is a work of tailored art that offers versatility, convenience and instant style without the commitment associated with weaves. “Custom units are great because they ensure a perfect fit to a woman’s head,” says ce-

Derek Jae:

With human-hair wigs, you should use the same shampoo and conditioning products that you would use on your natural hair. Stay away from heavy oils, because you don’t want your

wig to be weighed down.

Revive your synthetic wig by shampooing it with dish

detergent and conditioning it with fabric softener. Brush through, rinse and hang dry.

For both human and synthetic wigs, you need to have a wig

designers like Hadiiya Barbel (hadiiyabarbel-collections.com) and Kellon Deryck (flaw-

the trade like knotted roots, undetectable lace fronts and full lace caps. Of course, you can always start with a synthetic or human-hair

wig from the beauty store shelf and take it to a professional for customization. “I tend to

suggest synthetic wigs to women that want to be low maintenance [and] don’t have a lot of time to do a lot of styling,” says Derek Jae. “I suggest human-hair wigs for women who

“You don’t know you’re in paradise, but to me it was just normal life,” Eudovic said. “The community, the bond, the love.”

Normal life for young Eudovic also included being surrounded by art created by his father, Vincent Joseph Eudovic, a self-taught sculptor who also honed his craft in Africa. Starting around the tender age of five, young Eudovic not only picked up much of his artistic skills from his father, but he also learned from him that art wasn’t just eye candy. “For me it was a natural choice to gravitate to art, which was never just a pretty flower on the wall but a means to a positive end, a means of transforming society.”

A vehicle for social change, Eudovic’s work, created mostly in dark-stained wood, echoes his St. Lucian cultural traditions while celebrating the community spirit.

How to Save Money wHile on vacation

When you’re traveling, it’s easy to get caught up in the euphoria and spend,

spend, spend.

By sheryl nance-nash

Set prioritieS“Keep in mind your overall goal for the trip. Is it to try amazing food? To have experiences that leave an impression? Whatever it is, allocate the majority of your resources to that priority,” says Jenna Rogers, a certified financial planner with Mission Wealth.

Know currency exchange rateSIf you’re traveling out of the country, know what the U.S. dollar will afford you. Most countries will accept dollars, but it’s important to know just how much U.S. money you’re spending. Shop around if you decide to convert your money so you pay minimum fees for the transaction. Avoid airport currency exchanges; they tend to have high fees.

Do prep worKBefore you go, sign up for discount and deal sites like Groupon and Social Living for restaurants and attractions where you’re going. “Look for coupons online, as many places offer two-for-one or percentage-off coupons, print them out and bring them,” says Kevin Gallegos, a vice president with the Freedom Financial Network.

Find out what days are free at museums and botanic gardens and where parks and beaches are.

Also make sure the credit card you bring has no foreign transaction fees. Let your bank know you’ll be traveling, so if you use the ATM (which you should try to avoid anyway), they won’t block the transaction thinking it’s not you.

Be Strategic aBout meal timeHit the grocery store and farmers’ markets for breakfast, lunch and snack items. “Check out food trucks, festivals, and bakeries for food at a fraction of the price of restaurants. Have a picnic with deli items. There’s no better experience in the world than a French baguette, fresh

you’re Savvy. You got a great deal on your airfare, you did well with your accom-modations, maybe you’re even going the Airbnb route. Kudos. But before you congratulate yourself, there’s a high hurdle to jump before you can call yourself a frugal traveler. Often, the biggest challenge is once you arrive at your destination. How do you fight the urge to splurge?

Here are seven tips for keeping temptation at bay so you come home with money in your pocket and more memories than regrets!

create a Daily caSh BuDgetDon’t spend haphazardly. Have a predetermined, set amount of money to spend each day and stick to it. “If you allot $50 a day, keep track of your spending. Once you reach your limit, that’s it until the next day,” says Jamilah McCluney, founder of MoneyMD.

iliana Waters Gives us their favorite Motivational tips to help us sliM doWn and shape up for Good.

by nina heMphill reeder

Tip No. 3—Try Something New and Fun (like mixed martial arts, perhaps)GIW: “Mike definitely piqued my interests in MMA more. It’s a very intense workout. I’ve done all sorts of workouts, and incorporating mixed martial arts definitely pumped it up another level.”MJW: “Not only is it great for you physically, your art, your body and burning body fat, but psychologically, it also balances you out. Anything that you might have pent up—any hostility or stress—nothing gets it out more than hitting something. It’s like you are throwing a tantrum every time you work out.”FYI: White has black belts in eight different martial arts styles.

Tip No. 4—Allow Your Cheat Days (but don’t get carried away)MJW: “Pretty much on the weekend, I have two cheat meals. It’s not a whole day. It’s one of those things where I kind of indulge, but too much sugar, starch or whatever is not going to make me feel that great anyway, so it’s not all that enticing [to go overboard], actually.”FYI: Both White and Waters follow a clean diet of no fried foods, red meat, alcohol or added sugar. He limits his carb intake after 2 p.m. Waters, who admits she has a sweet tooth, allows herself a dessert once a week.

Tip No. 5—Find a Goal to Push YouMJW: “One personal trick is something I call cane day. I realize one day I will be walking with a cane, [but] the more fit you are, the more your body will battle disease and injury. One day that cane awaits you, so keep it away as long as possible.”GIW: “I see these magazines that show women who are 80 who look like 50 or women who are 70 but look like 40. I look at that as inspiration; that’s who I want to be. I want to look like 10 to 20 years younger if possible. Those sorts of things motivate me.”FYI: Catch the couple, who star together as love interests on film in Never Back Down 3, which is scheduled for release this April.

Your window to lose weight by the summer is getting shorter. We’re sure you know by now that diet and exercise together is the ideal way to achieve your goals (snore, right?). We are also sure that information doesn’t inspire you. But, ladies and gents, we know what would grab your attention: hot celebrities. So we turned to beefcake actor and kick-ass action star Michael Jai White and his super-sexy wife, actress and model Gillian Iliana Waters. Interested now? We chatted with the dynamic duo (who, by the way, are our contenders for the world’s fittest couple) to get their real-life tips to get us motivated to trim down and tone up for swimsuit season and beyond.

Tip No. 1—Find AccountabilityGillian Iliana Waters: “Find a partner. Working out with Mike motivates me. And when I see him doing it, it motivates me to want to keep doing it. So if you find someone and set a goal for that person—whether it’s your aunt, mom, boyfriend or best friend—you are doing it with the common goal to get fit and eat right. It really does keep you going a bit more than if you did it by yourself.”

Tip No. 2—Change Your MindsetMichael Jai White: “Stop looking at fitness like it’s a chore. It is a blessing to be in a position to have your choice of fitness. And you should honor that blessing by doing it, and that should be part of the joy of working out. When you accomplish your workout and you are done, let that feeling really set in. Let yourself become addicted to the feeling of completion…As well as with eating, your body will reward you for eating right, and then it doesn’t feel like a chore anymore.”

judgment, cutting your hair can be such a freeing feeling,” explains Wright. “It shows that you can be beautiful, edgy, sexy, and striking with short hair. We feature every style from bobs to bald and every texture from straight to curly. Last year alone, so many celebrities have cut their hair or already had amazing short hair, like Lupita Nyong’o, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Taraji P. Henson, one of our longtime favorites, Rihanna, and the list goes on.”

She adds, “If you’re on the fence about cutting your hair, remember, it’s just hair and it will grow back. Beyond that, educate yourself by having a consultation with a stylist to determine the best cut for your face shape and the best cut for your everyday lifestyle. There are many options out there, but you have to narrow down what’s best for you and go from there.”

With a solid business model and several strategic corporate partnerships in place (including Carol’s Daughter, Mizani, African Pride, Dr. Miracle’s and Soft and Beautiful to name a few), Wright, Momolu and The Cut Life team are positioned for longevity.

Miko Branch and her late sister, Titi, founded the pio-neering natural haircare company Miss Jessie’s. While her business is booming, thanks in large part to placement in major retailers like Target and Walmart, it was the death of her sister and business partner Titi, that inspired Miko to push forward, making sure that we are just as beautiful in-side as we are outside. In her 2015 memoir/business guide, Miss Jessie’s: Creating a Successful Business From Scratch—Naturally, Miko shares her experiences and the lessons she learned not only from her sister, but also from her company’s namesake, her grandmother Jessie Mae Branch. For her, having built an empire from nothing, while watching her sister struggle from, and eventually succumb to, depression is the catalyst she uses to help expand her legacy of being more than just a haircare company; she has also described it as being a, “living soul, a heartbeat that has changed the lives of many in a positive way.”

They say strength comes in numbers, and for Meredith Killian and Genelle Brooks-Petty, the brilliantly beautiful duo behind the Dine + Design Group, this couldn’t ring more accurate. Their website, a growing online destination that adds exquisite detail to hosting and entertaining through anecdotes, recipes, products, and music, came to the former attorney-turned-chocolatier and the stylist and interior designer after a joint need to spread their wings and squeeze every bit of possibility out of life that they could. This year, the pair plans to present their first retail space and move into the televised sector.

Standing between the cobblestone streets of Casco Viejo (known as Panama City’s historic district), look to the north horizon for a view that quite poetically captures the essence of the Central American city. The

district’s striking 17th- and 18th-century structures perfectly frame the backdrop of Panama City’s densely packed skyscrap-ers just off in the distance. In scenes like this, you’ll find that the Old World and New World collide rather harmoniously in the Panamanian capital.

The city’s past and future are perhaps most evident in the architecture. Driving into the city flanked by the Pacific Ocean, you’ll see a skyline reminiscent of a major metropolitan destina-tion. The Central American nation is home to an assortment of architectural gems such as the helix-shaped F&F building, the minimalist yet chic Waldorf Astoria and the Trump Ocean Club International Hotel and Tower, which, at 951 feet, currently stands as the tallest structure in the country. If the city’s skyline growth were any correlation to its economic growth, then it should be noted that all 20 of the city’s tallest buildings were erected in the last eight years. And according to data from Em-poris.com, which collects building statistics worldwide, the city is also in the planning stages for new constructions that would rival the height of New York’s Empire State Building.

Yet the latest shining example of the city’s modern archi-tecture is the newly constructed Biomuseo. Built in 2014, the museum was designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, who is noted for his postmodern designs of Spain’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Los Angeles’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. Biomuseo is the first and only building from the famous architect in Latin America. The colorful and massive futuristic edifice sits alone on an expanse of green park land. Dedicated to the nation’s ro-bust biodiversity, the museum is an educational yet lively course through Panama’s geological history and ecologi-cal importance. Starting from its formation as an isthmus (scientists believe North and South America were once separated by water millions of years ago), the museum showcases how both weather patterns and animal and plant life changed worldwide as a result of the continents connecting.

Fast forward to 1914 when the Isthmus of Panama would again play a major role on a global scale with the comple-tion of the Panama Canal. The canal’s construction—first undertaken by the French and later adopted by the U.S. in 1902—was a 34-year project to carve out a 50-mile waterway connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Panama, which took over ownership and operation of the canal from the U.S. in 1999, now plans to open its $5.34 -billion expansion later this summer. The expansion will allow for the admittance of heavier and larger cargo ships and thus will significantly increase the nation’s revenue and cement the country as a Latin American business hub.

Yet the century-old canal has not only helped establish the nation’s current competitive global positioning (it has the busiest airport in Central America and one of the strongest economies), the canal has had enduring cultural impact on the nation. Influence from France’s canal years still exists in the form of French-style balconies and buildings of Casco Viejo, which is deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site. West Indians from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands, who were brought over to help build the canal, have contributed to the rich Afro-Panamanian culture. And the long-standing American presence in the Canal Zone still lingers in continued U.S.–Panama relations. For example, the US dollar is legal tender in the country, and several U.S. universities have Panamanian branches, including Panama City’s Florida State campus.

But even as home to a modern world wonder and several marvels ranging from Spanish Colonial to state-of-the-art structures, Panama City still retains a purity that show-cases nature’s own engineering. Just three miles from the urban center is the Parque Natural Metropolitano, a tropical forest and wildlife refuge home to more than 300 species of animals. It’s here at the park’s highest lookout point that you’ll find more poetry. Among the sounds of rustling trees and the chirps of birds, you can catch panoramic views from the Pacific Ocean and city skyline to the canal and jungle, which all serve as part of the city’s unique and beautiful composition.

PANAMANIAN PLEASURESPLAN YOUR VISIT TO THE CITY WITH OUR LIST OF MUST-DOS.

Where to Stay: Waldorf Astoria PanamaOpened in 2013, the property is the first Waldorf Astoria in Latin Amer-ica. In the grand scale of Panama City hotels, the Waldorf has a prime location in the city’s center—a short walk to the pedestrian-friendly costal causeway (Cinta Costera) and neighboring the city’s nightlife and business districts on Calle Uruguay. The property even has its own entertainment options with its lobby bar, which occasionally invites in musicians for live performance. Look no further than the Waldorf’s own restaurants for an exciting meal: Ginger is an upscale Asian-fusion restaurant open until midnight or later, in which menu highlights include sushi sliders, and BRIO Brassie has a not-to-be-missed weekend brunch complete with a martini mixer-shaken salad station.

One of the hotel’s most striking features is an open-air floor, which show-cases the outdoor pool and patio bar. Unfortunately, a new construction blocks your would-be pool-to-ocean view, but the mid-level patio still provides an impressive panoramic view. The hotel was reportedly the lodging of choice for Usher and Robert De Niro, who both stayed at the property while filming Hands of Stone, the soon-to-be-released biopic of Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran.

What to Know: You Can Cruise the CanalWith the canal expansion, larger megacruise ships may soon pass through the Panama Canal, so stayed tuned with your favorite cruise line’s announcements of new routes through the canal.

Where to Hang: Casco ViejoThe UNESCO World Heritage site is layered with history from the ear-liest Spanish settlers to the regular goings on of notorious Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. Here, you’ll find souvenir vendors at every turn but also great restaurants and entertainment. There’s a number of live jazz and salsa bars, including Danilo’s Jazz Club from Grammy-winning Panamanian jazz pianist and composer Danilo Perez.

What to Buy: A Panama hatHistorians will protests that the hats didn’t really originate from Panama but from Ecuador. However, Panama made them famous—likely due to an image of President Theodore Roosevelt donning the straw hat during an inspection tour of the Panama Canal.

What to Eat: FishYou can’t go wrong with seafood in the coastal city. A 2-mile walk along the Cinta Costera will lead you to the Mercado de Mariscos (or fish market). Here, fishermen unload their daily catches. And likely due to that fresh-catch flavor, locals insist the market is the best place to grab a ceviche lunch. Also consider local specialties like carimañola, which are fried mashed yucca rolls stuffed with meat and cheese.

NIZUC | Cancun, Mexico

Have your camera ready at every turn of this luxury resort. The picture-worthy private 29-acre reserve on Mexico’s Caribbean Sea coast offers guests a super-chic and ultra-sexy tropical getaway.

Designed by trailblazing Mexico-based architect and designer Alejandro Escudero, NIZUC should go down as one of his greatest works. Clean lines and natural elements make a successful motif for the property, which also merges Asian and native influences in the design aesthetics. Woods and warm colors throughout provide a sophisticated backdrop for your photographing pleasure, while the property’s signature black comes into play with unexpected visual effect in places like their pools’ black-tiled floors.

And best of all, the tranquil scene isn’t spoiled by a mass of Cancun’s typical hard-partying vacationers. Set in a se-cluded stretch of the city’s tourist zone, guests can lounge beachside only to be interrupted by a staff member willing to refresh your drink. Additionally, the 274 guest suites spread out throughout the property. For ultimate privacy, opt for a villa, where tall white walls isolate your entire compound, which includes your cottage, garden lounge, private outdoor pool and waterfall (a popular se-lection among the resort’s celebrity clientele). For a visual wow factor, reserve one of their penthouse suites, which showcases floor-to-ceiling windows, dark teak wood fur-nishings, an indoor tub with views of your private garden patio and private plunge pool overlooking the coast.

With rooms so well equipped, it may be hard to find reasons to leave it. But do. The NIZUC dining is a must. In fact, NIZUC’s Ramona (gourmet Mexican), Indochine (Asian) and Terra Nostra (Italian) are coveted fixtures in Cancun’s very sparse fine-dining circle, so reservations at the property’s restaurants are highly advised (nizuc.com).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

1 Décor—Immediately upon entry, the high ceilings and open airways frame a seemingly endless reflecting pool adorned with lush garden beds. And while on the beach, you can survey the cool juxtaposition of the thatched-roof pool bar opposite the New Age lattice metal work around the property’s cubic Bar A-Kan lounge.

2 Seclusion—Vacationing south of the border is a familiar retreat for many Americans. But NIZUC serves as an escape within an escape. It’s a short flight for most East Coast departures and only a 15-minute drive from the Cancun airport. So in less than a four-hour journey, you can feel like you’re in a remote, private beach halfway around the world.

3 Complimentary activities—You’ll likely have no desire to ever leave the property. But if boredom does strike, the resort offers complementary water activities, such snorkeling, SUP, kayaking and scuba lessons or terrestrial entertainment, such as cooking classes, dance and fitness lessons and live music.

Virgin Hotels Chicago | Chicago

Just opened last January, Virgin Hotels Chicago became the much-anticipated maiden property of the Virgin Ho-tels brand, which will soon expand to other cities such as New York and Nashville. Billionaire Virgin owner Sir Rich-ard Branson is already lauded for his visionary approaches within the cell phone, music and air travel industries, so it’s no surprise that his hotel is full of surprises.

Appealing to the tech generation, a front desk attendant checks you in by iPad (you can also check in and out with the hotel app). An online pre-arrival questionnaire will help customize your experience, stocking your favor-ite foods in the mini bar. And (gasp) mini bar items are priced at normal MSRPs. One of the hotel’s signature features is the suite’s sliding privacy door, which separates the bedroom quarters and creates a large open-space closet bathroom/vanity/hall area.

Concierge? The hotel’s blog and attractions page curates a list of some of the city’s most noteworthy things to do, see and eat. But you don’t really have to leave the hotel for a good time. Hang out at the rooftop bar (open Thurs-day to Saturday until 2 a.m.) or check the marquee for events held at the property (virginhotels.com).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

1 Phone App—Download “Lucy,” the Virgin Hotel app, for the full Virgin experience. On your phone, you’ll be able to check in, check out, order room service, adjust the room temperature and more. You can also stream your phone’s content to your in-room television.

2 Cocktail Hour—Every night for the social hour, guests of the hotel are invited to enjoy a full, open bar at the Commons Club. If you’re a pro, there’s a lot you can throw back in an hour, so it’s good you’re staying the night.

3 Tesla House Car—It’s typical to have a house car at most high end hotels. But the Virgin brand makes things a little more appealing with the Tesla house car. When the red Tesla Model S is available, you can ask to get dropped off anywhere within a two-mile radius.

Casa Velas | Puerta Vallarta, Mexico

Who couldn’t use a massage after a day of airline travel? The newly renovated Casa Velas ditches the traditional check-in desk. Instead guests are pointed to lobby chairs, where you’re treated to a quick neck and shoulder massage from the resort’s in-house masseuses while an attendant checks you in.

The adults-only, all-inclusive resort takes into account the growing demographic of the health-conscious traveler. Yes, for breakfast you’ll find your pastries, eggs and tradi-tional Mexican or American breakfast options, but you’ll also find an entire menu page devoted to healthy choices like house-made granola, fruit, muesli and more than 10 fresh pressed fruit and veggie juices and smoothies. The property’s award-winning chef also pulls produce from the on-site garden and sources local when possi-ble. Velas makes fresh crudité platters daily, which can be delivered to your minibar at no additional cost. Book one of the wellness suites for in-room amenities such as a cycling bike, weights, an aromatherapy kit and a vitamin D spritzer. Or guests can start their days with yoga on the lawn or the beach at their exclusive beach club (hotelca-savelas.com).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

1 Handbag Loan Program—Ladies, feel free to keep your purse collection at home. Not only are resort guests offered wicker beach totes for day-to-day use, guests can take advantage of their complimentary designer handbag bar. The loan collection includes bags from designer brands such as Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Michael Kors and even Montblanc for men.

2 Eco-friendly—If it ever distresses you to think about all the food wasted at all-inclusive resorts, then you’ll find a little more comfort when you book at a Velas property. With its larger sister property taking the lead on many of the brand’s green initiatives such as solar power and wildlife rescue, this property also composts wasted food and donates food as slop to local animal farmers. Plus, it heats its water through solar power.

3 Speedy Service—There’s no exhausting wait for room service to arrive. With only 80 suites, the award-winning property is able to extend fast service. And you’ll always find a friendly staff member willing to assist you with almost every question—even tech support.

Embassy Row Hotel | Washington, D.C.

The colorful landscape of embassy homes along D.C.’s Massachusetts Avenue makes a perfect complement to the style of this recently renovated and rebranded hotel. Reception’s electric-blue wall contrasted with black-framed silhouettes sets the tone for fun. And reception staff, who model friendly smiles, jeans and smart blazers, echo that energy. Turn right and you’ll discover their lively restaurant and lounge, Station Kitchen & Cocktails. At night, fun-loving guests and locals settle in for dinner and creative drinks—there’s even house-made soda. Take the party back to the room with the 24-hour chef’s pantry, which includes grab-and-go snacks (which are either made in house or sourced from a local bakery or artisan market) and ready-made cocktails.

In the morning, return to the lounge, which now pulses with the beat of a vibrant coffee shop. With outlets at nearly every table, you can plug in here or venture down to the business space, which beams with eye-catching wall backdrops and graffiti-style murals. If you’re more less work, more play, the hotel jumps with activities from rooftop sunrise yoga to art showcases (embassyrowhotel.com).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

1 Cool cocktails—Many of the bar’s most alluring cocktails are designed by property restaurant manager Sheara Rivera. Try the rum and kiwi juice cocktail combo with marshmallow foam or their Cure, which, made tableside, incorporates smoked hickory wood.

2 Giving Back—The hotel partners with local nonprofit So Others Might Eat (SOME), which helps feed and clothe homeless. Any time guests book the SOME suite or order certain menu items from the restau-rant, a percentage of those purchases go to the organization.

3 Personalized Guides—Who hasn’t asked the concierge for recommendations and received a point in the direction of a rack of uninspired tourist brochures? The Embassy Row hotel has D.C.–area guides customized to your various interests, such as arts and museums and the best LGBT hangs.

Moonrise Hotel | St. Louis

“Out of this world” is a good way to describe this eccen-tric stop located within St. Louis’s famous Delmar Loop. Owner and community darling Joe Edwards said his fascination for all things intergalactic led to the boutique property’s quirky theme, which comes across like outer space as it was likely envisioned in the 1960s. The main staircase, which jets into the lobby, is the immediate eye-catching feature. Each step glows with a frame from the light spectrum. Space-themed artwork, memorabilia and collectibles from Edwards’s personal stock of prized possessions line the walls and halls. If you’re a fan of the odd and nostalgic, the gift shop is the perfect place to shop for your inner space cadet.

The rooms take a different stellar inclination as the ce-lebrity suites are dedicated to local “stars.” The contem-porarily-styled VIP suites pay homage to St. Louis Walk of Fame icons, such as Josephine Baker and Red Foxx (moonrisehotel.com).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

1 Pet Friendly—Pets are treated like stars with personalized check-ins for your furry friends, which includes water and a welcome sign. In your room, your pup or puss will receive a pet bed, signature souvenir collars and bandanas, portable drinking bowl and homemade pet treats.

2 Late-Night Dining—The hotel name almost makes it necessary that the dining time should extend way into the moonlight hours, so you have until 3 a.m. to enjoy food and cocktails at both the Eclipse restaurant and New Moon Room bar—and they serve homemade moon pies.

3 Solar Power—And what would a moonrise be without the sun to shed light? The Moonrise’s indoor/outdoor Rooftop Terrace Bar is fully powered by 107 glass solar panels located on the roof.

These fresh, exciting brands aim low—in the ages, that is—and appeal to a modern interest.

By NiNa HempHill ReedeR

The Millennials have spoken. And for good reason, the hotel industry has listened. Research suggests that the adult Millennial generation (18 to 34) is not only overtaking the Baby Boomer genera-tion (51 to 70) as the largest living demographic but also outspending them in business-related travel. So to appeal to this market, many of the big brands have taken a look inward to introduce a new hotel line with a more youthful style and high-energy aesthetic. And they’re addressing the desires of this tech-savvy, social sharing generation with touches such as free Wi-Fi, unlimited bandwidth, bedside charging ports, late-night dining and in-house entertainment.

Here are some of the big brands coming up in a city near you.

Moxy Hotels—As a division of Marriott, the brand focuses on providing boutique touches but at affordable prices. The hotel website incorporates an Instagram feed of happily hashtagging Moxy guests who show you how much fun you could be having at a Moxy hotel. Moxy Milan is currently open, and Moxy New Orleans is expected to open this spring.

Hyatt Centric—The Hyatt claims this line is for savvy travelers with eclectic tastes. And where there’s a happy hour, there’s fun. The Centric properties, such as in South Beach Miami and in Woodlands, TX, invite you to indulge in bites and drinks for their daily happy hour.

Aloft Hotels—So try ordering room service with-out using a single word. You can now at this Star-wood Division. The Aloft Manhattan hotel recently introduced Aloft TiGi (Text it. Get it.), in which you can text your room number along with the emojis to have room service deliver the corresponding item.

Canopy by Hilton—A friendly neighborhood atmosphere is the ambition for this Hilton brand. Taste local craft beers and wines and grab a com-plimentary breakfast goody bag containing locally made artisan pastries.

FIND THE GOOD LIFE

Las CataLinasWhen you’re searching for luxury investment property,

the ideal buy should have everything you’re looking for. In Las Catalinas, you’ll find that and more.

With real estate, it’s about location, location, location. That’s never more real than when it comes to investing in luxury residential property. If you hope to make money, better choose where you buy with great care. There is no

place that is perfect, but get as close as possible to Utopia.

Wish lists may vary but should include these must-haves: breathtaking scenery, culture, climate, a sense of community, great growth prospects and plenty to do and see. That’s just for starters. The home should have a certain

something that is so special that everyone who steps through the doors can’t help but notice that wow factor.

Your criteria should be tough—after all, you’re making a substantial investment. “Don’t jump in. Take your time. Study

multiple neighborhoods, understand the culture. Don’t buy into a culture that you don’t like. Choose a culture that you can fit in with and enjoy,” advises Aaron Kirman, president of John Aaroe Group, which boasts a client list of foreign inves-tors, industry executives and celebrities like Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.

You won’t have to worry about culture in Costa Rica. Be ready to fall in love at first sight with Las Catalinas, a tiny beachfront town, located on the Guanacaste coast of the Central American Country. The sparkling blue waters, mountains, tropical flowers and plants and sun that shines pretty much every day from November to May capture your attention and your heart. The stillness is peaceful, transcen-dental.

Las Catalinas is a master-planned com-munity. The first homes were finished in 2011. The town’s developers purchased 1,200 acres of land, but only 20% will be developed. The rest will remain a natural forest preserve. Today, Las Catalinas, with its brick-and-embedded-stone pathways, recalls memories of movies of European villages, especially with all the traditional and vernacular architecture. Right now, only two families live there full time. About 240 people, including visitors and residents, can sleep there. It’s an inter-esting mix of people who own, come to vacation or visit for an extended sabbati-cal. They come from other parts of Costa Rica, North America, Panama, Mexico and Western Europe.

“It’s an international group of bold, sophisticated, intelligent, nature-inspired people,” says Neal Herman, president and chief operating officer.

upsca lemagazine.com / Upscale Magazine 73

By design, there are no cars in Las Catalinas. It’s all about biking and walking. “There are health and social benefits of walking. It’s impossible not to wave, to talk to people,” Her-man says.

Las Catalinas takes a page out of the “new urbanism” play-book, which is more humanistic. Forget, cold, sprawling sub-urbs. “We are building a community not a development. We want people to collide—people that might not ordinarily cross paths—to mix and mingle,” he says.

You can see the town taking shape. More than 80 properties have been sold; 24 homes and 12 con-dos have been completed and delivered. Dozens of homes and condos are under construction.

A one-bedroom condo goes from $375,000 to $475,000, a two-bedroom from $395,000 to $665,000 and single-family homes from $665,000 to $1.25 million. There are also custom home lots from $230,000 to $575,000. The goal was to make luxury affordable. This is possible because developers are being mindful of costs, using as many local materials as possi-ble. The fabulous coralina, the natural stone flooring used on terraces and elsewhere, comes from Costa Rica and Columbia. Granite also comes from Columbia and mosaic tiles and other types of rock from Nicaragua. The developers created their own wood and tile shop, where windows, doors, cabinets, tables and various custom tiles are handmade on site.

Later this year, Las Catalinas will get a sprinkle of retailers—a pharmacy, grocery/deli and clothing store. But what’s already there is enough to make you think yes, maybe you have found paradise, particularly if you are a water lover. Swimming in the

translucent blue waters, kayaking, paddle boarding, jet skiing, boogie boarding, surfing—you’ll get your water fetish fulfilled. Road warriors won’t be disappointed, either. There are a total of 40 km of trails for hiking and biking through the dry forest, where you’re likely to encounter iguanas, monkeys, raccoons, deer and more multicolored birds than you can count. The hills are legendary. People come from all over the world to climb them. You’ll never forget coming out of the hills and connect-ing to Danta and Dantita beaches.

When you’re ready to eat, there’s Limonada, the center of life in the town. The outdoor restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and many of the tables are a stone’s throw from the beach. It’s a beauty at night when the restaurant is lit only with strands of festive white lights. As for the food, yummy international fusion, local tastes with a twist that surprises, like the Limonada Patacones, fried green plantain and ingredients such as an avocado-olive spread, chicken, chives, and bean puree. Expect a flavor explosion.

Come the weekend, there’s live music or outdoor movies at Limonada, along with theme parties, like salsa or Cuban night, where folks dress accordingly. If you’re looking for action elsewhere, five minutes away there are charming restaurants in Portero. Also nearby are beach towns Tamarindo and Playa Hermosa, where you can swim, paddle board and enjoy great food, be it Argentinian steaks or seafood. There are also sailboat and fishing trips, hot springs and mud baths, and two hours away, there is whitewater rafting in the Tenorio River.

Locals like to say the good life starts in Las Catalinas, and they should know.

Who wouldn’t want to come here for vacation? For sure, if there’s a place to buy luxury residential real estate, this should be on the list.

Your biggest problem might be giving up the house to renters, because you won’t want to leave. Despite the beauty, the vibe is decidedly chill.

Existing two- and three-bedroom homes start at $850,000, custom four-bedroom waterfront homes at $1.9 million. Waterfront home sites start at $450,000. Currently there are seven ocean-view cottages and six private oceanfront homes. The resort includes a marina, lodge, restaurant, 2.5-mile white sand beach, world-class fishing and diving. If you’re one who hunts for the elusive bonefish, you’ll fill your days fishing in bountiful bonefish waters. And if you got it like that, there’s a 4,000-foot private runway for your plane.

You’ll never get tired of relaxing on the beach, col-lecting shells and sharing stories with your loved ones or people you just met. But if you do, snorkel, kayak, bike around the island, swim in the infinity pool, work out in the gym, take a boat tour, play tennis, hang out with the folks at Al’s Tiki Bar or the Blue Hole Bar and Grill, or sit on your porch and just do nothing.

Owners and vacationers come from all walks of life and from all over the world. Dinner at the lodge makes for interesting conversation, everything from diehard fishermen’s tales about the one that got away to the life stories of executive types, Southern belles, families with young children, girlfriends on getaway and owners glad to be in their second “home” es-caping reality. The mix is eclectic.

While you can cook in your HGTV-worthy kitchen, truth is, you’ll be tempted to eat at the lodge often. Chef Dwaine Clare’s cooking is five-star fab—think grilled jerk crusted quail with roasted baby bell peppers, citrus and mango aioli for an appetizer. For an entrée, cilantro-crusted local rock lobster tail pan seared with a galette of sweet potatoes, aged lemon, topped off with dessert, a Key lime pie with Myers rum and honey foam.

Clare is a standout, as is the entire staff. They make everyone feel like a VIP. Whether it’s with the one who guides you on the fishing trip or serves you a drink, you’ll talk and talk. They become like family and are another reason you and your renters will want to keep coming back.

When you arrive at the Grand Bahama International Airport, one of the first things you see is a sign that says “The Grand Life.” It won’t take very long to figure out why.

nities for community learning and social research. Among other things, the center

regularly hosts exhibitions and artistic events.

After inviting her to the studio I share with my father, she asked me to curate

an exhibit at her center. This was in 2010 in the midst of a world financial

meltdown, which I thought was a clear indictment on our social dysfunction.

That’s when the light bulb was turned on for me on the idea of Koudmen. That’s

what I thought the world needed, a community that comes together and gives a

helping hand, one which, through love for one another, can fix the problems that

money cannot.

Turns out that was my first exhibition to gain noticeable public attention.

TALK ABOUT YOUR WORK AS IT RELATES TO UPLIFTING BLACK PEOPLE,

LIKE YOUR “YET WE RISE” PIECE.

I fear that people are becoming desensitized about the disparities and the

prejudices affecting black people. They need to be addressed. I deal in the light,

but it doesn’t mean I’m incapable of handling the dark. I want my people to find

the answers and solutions. We have a lot to be proud of. We are innately powerful,

but we have to get away from the slave ship mentality. We have to be awakened to

our true greatness. My ultimate hope is for our men to become men; that we get

back to what we are supposed to be. On that front, I will continue to use my work

as a catalyst for change.

TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN SIDE OF YOUR CAREER, YOUR JEWELRY

DESIGNS, WHICH ARE SAID TO HAVE BEEN PURSUED BY ENGLISH

ROYALTY. ARE YOUR SCULPTURES AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC?

The governor general, who represents the British monarchy, contacted me to

ask if I could design something for William and Kate’s wedding. The piece I

designed, two rings intertwined, looks like two people kissing. It was so well

received, one of the queen’s jewelers, who was vacationing in St. Lucia, later

visited me. That led to a relationship where some of my work will be reproduced in

precious metals. We are looking to launch the first designs soon. The proceeds will

be donated to charity, specifically an orphanage in St. Lucia.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU, YOUR FUTURE GOALS?

I’m excited about public sculpture. I have done work in China, where I just

completed the last one of five pieces a few months ago. Public art is for the people,

so I’m looking at international projects. I’m also looking at exhibitions. Money is

important, but I want to make life better for others.

I see my work as a portal to the understanding that we are all trying to find

answers and purpose, a vehicle for social change.

EEvEryonE knows about Brown the gridiron bulldozer, but there is much more to this powerful man filled with compassion. His charity and gang peace mediation work is just as impressive as his superhuman athletic achievements. Brown’s activism led him to create the Negro Industrial and Economic Union (NIEU) in 1967 for helping support black-owned businesses. The group included prominent black athletes like Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Brown and NIEU gave support to Muhammad Ali after he offered his reasons for rejecting the Vietnam War draft. In 1972 he organized Food First, a program that sent food to Marshall County, Mississippi, the nation’s poorest county.

Born on February 17, 1936, on St. Simons Island, Georgia, Brown went on to have an illustrious sports career. In college, Brown dominated the competition, both on the football field and on the basketball court. He also ran track and was a talented lacrosse player. He even was a successful place kicker. Next stop on his journey was being selected to the Cleveland Browns in 1957. He won NFL Rookie of the Year. Brown led the league in rushing a record eight times out of his nine year NFL football career. He helped Cleveland to win the NFL Championship in 1964 and to be runners-up in 1957 and 1965. Brown has received the triple crown: College Football Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame; and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. In 2002 he was named by Sporting News as the greatest pro football player ever.

Brown saw a life for himself outside of football, and before the start of the 1966 season, he stunned the sports world by announcing his retirement to begin a full-time acting career. Biographer Mike Freeman credits Brown with becoming “the first black action star.” While some doubted he would stay away from the game for long, Brown stayed true to his word, leaving football for good and going on to appear in more than 30 films, including The Dirty Dozen, Three the Hard Way, Slaughter, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka, and Ice Station Zebra. Brown still fights today for the voiceless and marginalized.
