Derby Day – Let’s celebrate Easter.

Spring has arrived, both in spirit and in weather indications. The rain has put a damper on a lot of things but not on our spirit of joy, nor our expectation of a wonderful display of wild flowers. Remarkable women deserve recognition and….

The Honorable Judge Kaycee Jones is certainly one of those women who should be recognized for her achievements.

This is one special young lady. Her family has strong ties to East Texas and in particular to Polk, Trinity and San Jacinto Counties where she now serves as District Judge of the 411th

District Court. This post is a triple challenge as she works for, and in, the three counties as listed. Her calendar includes appearances at all three locations on rotational basis, but with priority to the most populated county of the triumvirate, Polk. The District Court she serves was formulated by the Texas Legislature and is typical of district courts set up to serve smaller counties which could otherwise not support a District Judge in their district.

Formerly an Assistant District Attorney for Polk County from 2002 to 2012, this daughter of Livingston decided that her life needed more excitement, more commitment and greater contribution so she ran an electoral campaign for the a Judicial seat and in 2012 she won the election. It is a job she dearly loves and is clearly well suited to.

Her background is of great importance to her current commitments; after all she is the youngest child of Willis and the late Ellen Jones of Livingstone. Her mother, Ellen, was a deeply entrenched member of the community with family residing in and around Livingston since the mid 1800’s and having a family connection to Capt Ike Turner (1839-1863).

Gwyneth Harrison (1918-2003), Kaycee’s maternal

grandmother was truly dynamic and had great influence the life and times of Livingston. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Livingston from 1941, where she taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She served as president of the Livingston PTA and president of the Livingston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a charter member and president of the Livingston Pilot Club. Following in the footsteps of her grandmother and mother Kaycee was a member of the Livingston Pilot Club, serving as secretary.

Her maternal grandfather served in the Pacific during WWII.  After he returned he began a small business in Livingston in 1945.  That business, Harrison Body Shop, is still in operation today.  It is now being run by the third generation— her brother and cousin took over upon her father’s retirement.  Her Dad is also an active member of the community.  He coached youth sports when Jaycee and her siblings were young.  He has been a member of the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years.

So you see, Kaycee has role models of some stature to live up to.

Kaycee served on the Polk County Relay for Life steering committee for over 5 years.  She is currently a member of the Livingston Rotary Club, having served on the Board of Directors in the past. She is also a doting Aunt to a niece and three nephews. Her education embraces an undergraduate degree at Texas A&M (1997) where after, under advice of one of her professors, she attended Suffolk University in Boston where she gained her legal degree in 2002. She dearly loves Boston and the history of that intriguing city, but the cold winters did not suit her at all and home beckoned. Thus she returned to her home state where she has carved an enviable career for herself. If you have ever served in her court I am sure you will have been impressed.

The Honorable Kaycee Jones addressed the ladies of San Jacinto Club at their meeting on March 17th where the audience discovered she has a delightfully droll sense of humor. She punctuated her presentation with a marvelous set of stories about what can and has happened in her court room.

We salute Judge Jones and thank her for her presentation after a long and mentally exhausting day in the courtroom.

Let me introduce you to our President of the Republican Women of SJC.

Kelly Selmer, elected to position of County Tax Assessor-Collector in 2012 and then voted in as President for the newly formed Republican Women’s Club of San Jacinto County. Kelly has achieved a lot in a short amount of time and she has plans for many more improvements in both spheres of influence to which she has been elected. She is currently working tirelessly to promote and grow the club so that members can make a meaningful contribution to election results in this county. Just take a look at the website she has designed and published at www.rwofsjc.org.

A native Texan this young lady was born in Pasadena to Thomas and Joyce Clark. She is one of three children and the only girl. Her two brothers Thomas Jr. and Christopher continue to live in Pasadena.

In 2008 she married Michael Selmer and, as he serves the TDCJ at the O.B. Ellis Unit in Huntsville, they pulled up roots and relocated to San Jacinto County in 2009. In 2013 they made their home in Pointblank. Her parents have also relocated and now reside in Livingston. She is a mother of two, Ashleigh 25 and Tyler 20 both of whom live in La Porte.

Those of us who already know Kelly also know that she is indeed a mover and shaker and this is clearly borne out by her academic achievements. Whilst working for a homebuilding / real estate company she attended college and obtained her degree in Business Management with a GPA of 3.72. With the degree in hand she was promoted to Vice President of the company, the job she held prior to relocating

Finally, we would like to ask you to keep us updated on graduations; on achievements of our youth; and to forward any suggestions that

to San Jacinto County in 2009. Despite her heavy work schedules she is currently studying for a Paralegal Degree maintaining a GPA of 3.75 and she is due to graduate in August 2015. She is attending the North Harris County Lone Star Community College where she is also a member of the honor society Phi Theta Kappa.

In 2014 Dwayne Wright, the Republican Party Chairman of San Jacinto County approached party members to start a Republican Women’s Club in the County. Kelly obtained information for starting the club from the Texas Federation of Republican Women and in August 2014 they had their first meeting at which she was nominated and elected President. Her goal is to get the club involved in the community and to continue to do all she can to guide the club to fulfill aims to influence residents of San Jacinto County to make it the be the best county in which to live.

the Republican Women are on the move!

Republican Women of SJC are looking for women who want to join this vibrant organization.   We are gearing up to work hard in the upcoming elections and to elect leaders who reflect our ideals and convictions.  Tell your friends and neighbors.  Tell your co-workers.  We need good, strong women who are willing to give of their time and energy to keep San Jacinto, the State of Texas and the United States of America RED!!

We have had enough of the liberal progressives who are ruining our nation.  It is time for us to step up and restore our government to conservative Republican values.  Please encourage people that you know to log on to www.rwofsjc.org.  They can view our upcoming event calendar and planned activities.   They can sign up to receive notifications from the club.

Now is the time to get involved.  The 2016 elections are right around the corner and Republican Women of SJC want to be ready to make a difference!

Did you know?

Did you know that there are seven distinct types of trial courts in Texas? That question intrigued us and so we started doing some research to find out exactly what the distinctions were.
