Rabbi Anthony Fratello
If you or someone you know is
struggling with addiction,
please do not hesitate to call:
Rabbi Anthony Fratello,
at Temple Shaarei Shalom,
561-364-9054.
You will be treated with love and
respect.
You will be welcome to worship
with us.
We will support you and guide you
until you find your right path.
The National Speed Limit of Great Britain is 70
kph.
Interstate 70 Links Utah and Maryland.
70 is the Atomic Number for Ytterbium
In Olympic Archery, the archers stand 70 meters
from their targets.
In the Jewish Tradition, 70 is a special number.
According to the Torah, the total number of Jacob’s
Family that went into Egypt numbered 70 souls.
The Book of Numbers teaches that Moses
assembled 70 elders to assist him out in the
wilderness. According to the Psalms and the
Mishna, 70 is the age of Strength, this is why there
is a custom to celebrate a second Bar/Bat Mitzvah
upon reaching 83.
For us this year, of course, 70 is also a Special
Number. This year Israel Celebrates its 70th
Birthday. For some in our congregation, those who
remember a time BEFORE there was an
independent Jewish Homeland, this may seem like a
truly miraculous thing. But, even for those of us for
whom Israel has always been a reality, we too
should celebrate and revel in this achievement.
Who would have thought that the Zionist Dream
would have not only succeeded, but gotten us to
where we are today?
At the same time, of course, we must remember that
the dream is not yet complete. Israel still has its
share of problems, within and without. Recent
political scandals, the ongoing conflict between ultra
-Religious and Secular Israelis, the unfinished
business between the Israelis and Palestinians are
but a few. And, on the outside, we still long for
meaningful and comprehensive peace with our
neighbors.
Simultaneously, our people have turned Israel into a
technological powerhouse. Israel is the only
Liberal Democracy in a VERY iffy part of the
world, and the nation contributes more than its fair
share of social and cultural exports. Not to
mention, Israelis truly succeeded in making the
desert bloom. So yes, there are things to lament,
and much work remains undone. But, there is also
a great deal to celebrate and laud.
There is a lot happening in the Community around
Israel’s 70th Birthday. The local Federation is
putting on a program as well as sponsoring a trip
this summer. Temple Shaarei Shalom is going in
October, as many of you know. But… even if you
cannot join with us on our trip, you can participate
in our Wonderful Israel at 70 Celebration.
I invite you to participate in our Wonderful Israel at
70 Celebration on April 17th. This is your chance
to join with your Temple Family, and in solidarity
with Jews all across the world, to mark a wonder-
ful, wonderful reality. Moreover, it is our chance to
recommit to doing whatever we can to make the
Israel of Today, a forerunner to an even better and
brighter tomorrow.

Grandparents:
Sherry & Henry Krostich,
Marlene & Stanley Fetterman
Siblings: Adam and Max
Sports: Running
Academics: Math
Special Interests: Arts & Crafts
Torah Portion: Emor
For my Bat-Mitzvah project I did a fitness challenge
where anyone could exercise for at least two weeks.
Participants donated five dollars to a fifty-fifty raffle.
Half of the money went to Special Olympics to help
more people get good exercise. I was honored to do this
project because I was able to help many people get
healthy, all for a good cause.
Sophia Burnston
becomes a Bat Mitzvah
on April 14, 2018
Parents: Stacey & Howard Burnston
Grandparents: Richard & Marilyn
Forman, Doreen Burnston,
Sheldon & Stella Burnston
Siblings: Alexa and Joshua
Sports: Recreational Volleyball
Academics: Language Arts and History
Special Interests: Singing and Piano
Torah Portion: Tazria/Metzorah
For my bat mitzvah project, I wanted to combine two of
my passions: singing, and spreading joy and happiness. I
created a group called “Singing for Smiles”. We sing at
nursing homes all around Palm Beach County. The sole
purpose of this group is to provide a source of joy and
entertainment to the residents living in the nursing
homes we visit. By the time we leave, all the residents in
the room are smiling, and we, the singers, are too. After
we leave, I am always beaming. I get this feeling, almost
as if I know that I’ve done what I can to make this world
a happier place. There’s no way to replicate the feeling.
Scott Schachter
becomes a Bar Mitzvah
on April 21, 2018
Parents: Nicole & Adam Schachter
Grandparents: Arthur & Carol Garfield,
Nancy Schachter
Sibling: Jared
Sports: Basketball
Academics: Science
Special Interests: Designing
Torah Portion: K’doshim
For my Bar-Mitzvah project I raised money for the
Breast Cancer Foundation by making chocolate ribbons
to sell. With the help of many family members and
friends, I was able to achieve my goal. This achievement
made me feel good because I’m helping many people
that have gone through this in the hopes of prevention
and wellness with care and treatment.

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE
MAY 4 – 5, 2018
This weekend we will tackle a subject of significant current importance from several perspectives. Dr. Stella Batalama, our scholar-in-residence, will explore with us
TECHNOLOGY: ETHOS & ETHICS.
FRIDAY SHABBAT SERVICES at 7:30 pm
Dr. Batalama, Dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science (FAU) will be discussing
TECHNOLOGY: ETHOS & ETHICS. Oneg to follow.
SATURDAY EVENING at 7:00 pm
a discussion of TECHNOLOGY: ISSUES AND IMPLICATIONS ON SOCIETY AND INDIVIDUALS: overt and covert usages.
We will begin with a wine and cheese reception and follow with coffee and cake.
TECHNOLOGY: ETHOS and ETHICS
Technology is the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment.
Ethos defines character or fundamental values; the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation or ideology
Ethics address the issues of what is 'right', what is 'just', and what is 'fair'. Ethics describe moral principles influencing conduct; what people do and how they believe they should act in the world.
And what does this have to do with me, you ask?
The Technological Revolution, similar to the Industrial Revolution, has made life easier, longer and (possibly) better for most of us.
How we use that Technology is what we will discuss this weekend. We will consider current issues, in areas such as:
Medical Ethics, Cybercriminality, Digital Recognition, Texting, Privacy vs. Security, Citizen Journalism, and the Internet.
We will recognize that concerted efforts are required to uphold ethical values within society; relations which do not exclude people or limit liberties of some people at the expense of others .
PLEASE COME AND SHARE IN THIS
IMPORTANT, INCLUSIVE, INNOVATIVE
BIRTHDAY WEEKEND.

NCJW Palm Beach Section Delivers 40 Bags of Food for Passover
When the shelves in Publix and Famous Foods start filling up with matzo, gefilte fish, and other Passover
goodies, National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Palm Beach Section knows it’s time to continue its
tradition of helping the less fortunate in our community. Under Chair Fredi Grove, food is collected, pur-
chased, sorted, bagged, and delivered to 40 families from 5 area temples: Anshei Shalom in Delray Beach,
Temple Shaarei Shalom in Boynton Beach, Beth Tikvah in Greenacres, Beth Torah in Wellington, and
Golden Lakes in West Palm Beach.
At Villaggio’s Women’s Seder on March 14th, numerous boxes, jars, and containers of Kosher for Passover
food were donated by the attendees along with Publix gift cards. The remaining items from Fredi’s list were
purchased at Publix and Famous Foods: matzo, applesauce, tuna, gefilte fish, potato pancake mix, matzo ball
soup mix, noodles, preserves, macaroons, etc. A gift card for other essentials is also included in each food
bag.
On March 19, a bagging session was held at Fredi’s home; deliveries were all made on March 21. The Holi-
day Food Bag Program has grown enormously in the last 2-1/2 years. To help it grow further, please contact
Fredi at [email protected] . Donations of gift cards, checks, or food are greatly appreciated all year long
as there are still more people who need assistance.
INGREDIENTS
PREPARATION
1. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat and cook the potatoes for 30
minutes, until fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and put back in the pot over low heat.
2. Add the parmesan, milk, butter and salt to the potatoes and smash until creamy and smooth. You can leave in some potato pieces
for texture.
3. Cool the potatoes in the fridge for 30 minutes.
4. Scoop 2 tablespoons of cold mashed potatoes, roll them in to a log shape and place on a baking sheet. Continue forming the logs
until all of the mashed potatoes are used.
5. In one bowl, whisk the egg. Split the dried falafel mix in to two bowls. Roll the potato logs in one bowl of the falafel mix, then
the egg, then into the second bowl of falafel mix and set back on the baking sheet.
6. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat then fry the potato logs for 2 minutes, 1 minute on each side. Place
on paper towels to drain.
*Serve the potato croquettes with tahini or pesto.
