10 Innovation from Cefla Live!

Happy 2017!The first thing we want to do in the last Xylonissue of 2016 is to wish you all the best forthe year that is just beginning.

We would like to think it is going to be a dif-ferent year, amazing, full of satisfaction andgreat things, but in recent times we have le-arned that the roads are winding, that youhave to keep moving, ready to seize any op-portunity and to shuffle your cards againand again...

All in all, for Italian technology it has been apositive year. The same is true for the globalmarkets that, despite some exceptions, stillhave to express their real value. This appliesboth to technology and to the products crea-ted with such technology.

The black wave has dissolved, or so it se-ems.The crisis has become softer and most shipsare in safe harbors. So, we are looking at the next twelve monthswith an unquenchable desire to act! We be-lieve this is the approach we all should fol-low.

In this issue of Xylon International, we arepresenting ideas, events, companies, te-chnologies, stories: all you have to do isread to see that the wood industry is stillvital, active, ready to invest.

What else can you ask? If we think about thebig political events of the recent period –from Brexit to the new US president, up toRenzi’s resignation in Italy – it is amazing tosee the minor impact they have had on theeconomy and stock exchange. We reallybelieve that, whatever happens, one part ofthe world has decided to carry on anyway, maybe along winding roads, but never stop-ping.The past few years have taught us this lessonand we shall not forget it in the next ones.

A NOTE ABOUT THE INDIAN MARKET

From a historical perspective, India is oneof the most interesting markets for Italianand European companies. With a population of more than one billion, representing a huge community of potentialbuyers, the country must be consideredby any company a target for their inve-stments. However, there are critical aspects that in

the past decade have not been solved, and insome cases have even got worse. First of all, it is difficult to find a reliable partner, even a local reseller. Big companies that have achieved success haveestablished a manufacturing site and have gaineda competitive edge on their direct competitors.Another critical issue is Asian competition, mostlyfrom China, which is rapidly increasing its marketshare, especially at the entry level, creating an

additional barrier to the penetration of Westerncompanies. In this scenario, exhibitions have al-ways offered significant opportunities to meetoperators, potential buyers or simply to get aglimpse of the market. In 2017 there will be DelhiWood in New Delhifrom 1 to 4 March, where Acimall (the associationof Italian woodworking machinery and tools ma-nufacturers) is organizing a national pavilion.Looking at recent market figures, in the first sixmonths of 2016 Italy exported to India technologyfor a total value of 13 million euro, up by 100 per-cent compared to the same period of 2015.These figures span a short timeframe, so theyare subject to significant variations. Nevertheless, we hope we can replicate suchperformance in the next years.

Custom, next-generation products designedfor local operators in a deeply changing mar-ket. Made-in-Italy woodworking technologyis packing to leave for the next edition ofDelhi Wood.

he industry of made-in-Italy woodworking techno-logy is addressing the Indian market – the targetaudience of “Delhi Wood”, the exhibition sche-duled in Greater Noida from 1 to 4 March 2017 –with its proven experience on the global scenarioand the capacity to offer specific solutions forIndian operators... starting from small and mediumenterprises.

Biesse, Stefano BotteneDirettore commerciale & marketing Biesse India

In India “made in Bies-se/Italy” is consideredas advanced and so-phisticated technologywhich is in line with In-dustry 4.0 revolution.Biesse products areconsidered as reliableand believed to be valuefor Money. Product can

better respond to the demand in India by givingcomplete and customised solution to the custo-mers/market. Biesse is going to participate in“Delhi Wood” 2017 with an agenda of "An Affor-dable High-tech Solution". The machines will beinterconnected through software to integratethe entire work flow. Idea is to show the conceptof Production Management through a “CabinetSoftware”. This integration is to avoid many man-power intervention from Design to Production ofthe cabinets.

Cefla, Sam ThomasSales Area Manager - Ce-fla Middle East FZEItalian technology not onlyensures top quality but alsoa vast array of solutions whichenable local producers to an-ticipate market demandsthrough innovation whichstems from typical Italian expertise. Cefla in par-ticular, global leader in the finishing industry, offers above all established solutions for localfurniture and kitchen manufacturers. In my opinion, our “Roller Coater” line in combination with“Inert Coating & Digital Printing” for Melamineand Mdf, and our Automatic Spraying Lines, forexample, are the best options for panel anddoor manufacturers. We also design and provideto our customers Finishing Lines and Sandingmachines for Moulding, which is one of the keyrequirements from the local market. Moreover, inorder to innovate and propose new solutions toour customers, we are well-placed also withregard to Plastic, Metal and Composite Materialfinishing. Cefla Middle East will be at “Delhi Wood”to showcase the latest technologies by Cefla Fi-nishing, 100 percent “Made in Italy”.

Giardina Finishing, Filippo GermanoSales Area ManagerI would like to point out thatthe Indian market in ourfield is just starting out. Wehave to consider that mostof the furniture companiesare currently painting ma-nually in simple basicspray booths, most of the

time not even using pressurized drying booths, but their idea is to automate the finishing as soonas possible. Giardina is one of the most well-known brand in this field since more than 50years. Giardina is able to supply any type of fini-shing equipment, in order to process and fulfillthe requirements of his customers. In cooperationwith Mauri Macchine we are able to satisfy alsoevery needs for handling and logistics. Just re-cently, one of the leader companies for furnitureand interiors in Chennai, has installed a bigGiardina fully automatic spraying line and it willbe a great reference for us in the next future. Mytarget for the new year is to spend more time inIndia to visit new customers and thus increasingthe finishing market over there.

www.giardinagroup.com

Ica, Andrea PanicciaGeneral ManagerThe Indian market is veryinterested in made-in-Italyproducts in general, andalso Italian design furnitureis a major reference. Icahas been operating in Indiafor over 20 years, and thisyear we have signed ajoint-venture agreement with Pidilite, an Indianleader in the production of adhesive and con-struction chemicals, listed on the stock exchange. So now we have direct operations in the Indianmarket through the new company Ica Pidilite.Having been in this market for a long time, wehave directly experienced the developments ofthe Indian market over time. From the widespreaduse of obsolete paints, demand has shiftedtowards more innovative and performing products. In recent months, we are also seeing a strong in-crease of environmental awareness amongarchitects and designers, with whom we haveestablished closer and closer relationships overtime. They turn to us for information and updateson new trendy effects and we provide them withcreative hints and tangible solutions based onenvironmental-friendly products. In India, paintsand coatings are almost exclusively applied by“paint contractors” on the spot. This approach iscompletely different from industrial application. The priorities are ease of use and fast application. Moreover, products must be suitable for extremeenvironmental conditions (temperature, moistureetc.). To train users to apply our products, we or-ganize training courses with application sessions. For coating applications at industrial level, instead, the requirements are very similar to other interna-tional markets.

EVENTS

“EPF FOR AFRICA”

A delegation from different African countries cameto Italy to visit the San Giovanni al Natisone head-quarters of the wood and furniture research center:two days of in-depth discovery, discussion andfuture perspectives...“Africa represents the futureof our industry, a historical cycle that has aclear priority: sharing a common language towork together starting from the same parametersand the same references". So Paolo Fantoni, president of Epf-European Panel Federation, introduced the initiative “Epf for Africa”, a wide-scope project that reached a climax in the pastweeks in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The goal is clear:work to know each other better, to identify thehuge potential of close relationships between Eu-ropean economies and African countries in thewood-based materials industry. To do this, it isnecessary to speak the same language and toshare precise standards. Therefore, it is essentialto understand and acknowledge common rules, which are not created only through the adoptionof specific reference standards, but also throughcontrol and test procedures applied to raw materialsand finished products. For this purpose, aboutthirty African delegates from Algeria, Cameroon,Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Nigeria and Kenya spentone week in Italy, invited by the European Fede-ration. Visits, meetings, in-depth discussions tounderstand the habits and needs of the Italianand European industries; a journey with an im-portant stop at the Catas laboratories at San Gio-vanni al Natisone (Udine). “We met very competentpeople and engineers”, said Andrea Giavon,Catas director. “We had two intensive days, or-ganizing a seminar to inform our African col-leagues about the standards and the test andcontrol activities adopted by Catas, and to havea great opportunity to discover the potential ofthe African market. Talking with panel manu-facturers, standardization delegates, laboratory

technicians and industry asso-ciation representatives, we hadfurther evidence that the timeis right to build far-reaching proj-ects together, with unexpectedeconomic, social and culturalvalue”. “Epf commitment in thisrespect is really far-sighted –Giavon added – and we arethankful to the Federation andPresident Fantoni for involvingus in this opportunity and al-lowing us to reaffirm that Catasis an international reference forcertification and tests of wood-

based panels”. During two days, Catas gave acomplete overview of technical subjects, standardsand testing, involving all departments in visitsand ad-hoc demonstrations. Two technical focuspresentations were offered: Paolo Tirelli, me-chanical department manager at Catas, illustratedthe European and international standards thatdefine requirements and test methods to evaluatethe mechanical performance of panels, whileSandro Ciroi of the Formaldehyde Section infor-med guests about chemical safety issues relatedto the emission of harmful substances, such asformaldehyde, a recognized carcinogen that isarousing even more attention in the furniture in-dustry. Catas involvement in European and inter-national standardization activities has allowed toprovide the African delegation with major previewson revision and technical update works currentlydealt with by CEN and ISO technical committees.“The countries in North Africa are recordingsignificant population growth and a strong ex-pansion of urban settlements and residentialunits”, added Paolo Fantoni. “Italy is a favoritedestination for their industries and Epf is willingto strengthen such interaction in order to develophigh-quality production processes and the ca-pacity to test products according to establishedEuropean parameters and standard”. The seminarwas also presented in a press conference wheremanaging director of Catas, Angelo Speranza, had the opportunity to introduce the researchcenter and its activity, summing up the mission ofthe institute in few significant figures: Catas iscurrently the most important European laboratoryin the wood-furniture industry by number of tests(over 41 thousand annually) for 1,850 companiesin 47 countries around the world, in its 6,500-square-meter laboratories.

WOODWORKING MACHINERY:ITALY TAKES THE LEAD!

ACIMALL

EVENTS

The Italian market is driving wood technologyorders. While absolute values reaffirm the extra-ordinary export propensity of the Italian wood te-chnology industry (over 75 percent of 1,800 millioneuro of production are shipped abroad), thepositive trend of the Italian market in percentvalue is continuing, after too much time with fewinvestments in instrumental goods. In the July-September 2016 quarter, wood and wood-basedmaterials machinery increased by 18.3 percentcompared to the same period of 2015 (growthhad amounted to 21.5 percent in the previousquarter). And just like three months ago, Italygave the most significant contribution in terms ofpercent growth, with a solid 28.8 percent after30.4 percent in the April-June period. Minorworries are coming from the international mar-kets, which in the period under scrutiny showedless interest for Italian technology (minus 3.1 per-cent) compared to the same quarter of 2015 (inthe April-June 2016 quarter, orders had increasedby 17.2 percent). “We are experiencing an un-expected “adjustment” of our economic scenario, although there were signals that something wasfinally changing also in the Italian market”, saidLorenzo Primultini, Acimall president, commen-ting on the figures on the quarterly survey carriedout by the Studies Office of the Italian manufactu-rers’ association. “For a long time we had beenwaiting for a rally of investments by “our” entre-preneurs – Primultini added – and in this quarterthere is clear evidence of a new course; our in-dustry is much livelier, also as a result of thepositive effects of government measures andthe necessity to renew and upgrade machineryand plants after postponing for several years”.

Not only: “If the “Industria 4.0” National Plan, that has been hitting the headlines in recentweeks, is passed, it will be an additional leverto improve our results in the domestic market, with a boost that − without being too optimistic− might bring the end of a very difficult period. We hope that tax facilitations for new furniturein renovation projects and the bonus for youngpairs are maintained also in the next StabilityLaw”, Primultini concluded. The figures of Acimall’squarterly survey indicate that revenues have in-creased by 15.8 percent compared to the sameperiod in 2015, the orders book covers 3 monthsand prices have recorded a 1.3 percent variationsince January 1st. Acimall’s Studies Office alsocarries out a quality survey for the quarter underscrutiny: according to 28 percent of the sample, production is recording a positive trend, 50 per-cent indicate “substantial stability”, while 22percent report shrinking volumes. Employmentis stationary for 83 percent of the sample and in-creasing for 17 percent. Available stocks arestable according to 72 percent of the samplecompanies, increasing for 22 percent and de-creasing for 6 percent. But what can the wood-working machinery and technology industry expectin the near future? Forty years in business are a great achievement, especially in an industry with a short history com-pared to other sectors. And if those forty yearshave been filled with passion, desire to innovate, strong bonds to your land and your past, there ismuch reason to make a big party! And so it was: on Sunday, October 8, over 300people gathered in Pavia di Udine to celebrateMetal World, one of Italy’s top toolmakers. Astory that began with four cousins – Franco, Enzo,Rino and Giorgio Paviotti – taking up the challengeof making tools far back in 1976, in the industrialdistrict of Friuli chairs that was running at fullsteam. Then things changed, the world changed, and in 2014 also Metal World transformed: toface this "new world", you need new tools andkeep striving for success with unwavering pas-sion...In the past two years, the company hasbeen driven by Franco and Giorgio Paviotti’s fa-milies, who kept investing in machinery, advancedtechnology, new products for other industries, taking the Metal World brand far beyond thewood industry into aerospace, automotive, ad-vanced materials.“Think new, think different”, said Franco Paviottiwith a touch of emotion as he addressed the au-dience of the 40th anniversary party. “If you wantto carry on, you must have the courage to lookthrough new eyes, to invest, to value your staff,to understand it’s high time you explored newterritories, to complement our great experienceand expertise in special tools production with acatalog of standard solutions, so that we candevelop a different organization for our business. We know that these have only been the firstforty years, then there will be the next generationsof our sons and daughters, and possibly our

grandchildren, to guide Metal World and towrite another piece of our story". It was anintensive day, sometimes exciting and emotional.A quick tour in the production department, afterwelcome and registration. And then a tastefulcocktail buffet, before the official ceremony, thegreetings, the speeches of those who know MetalWorld and its owners, starting from Mauro DiBert, deputy mayor of Pavia di Udine, the presidentof Confindustria Udine Matteo Tonon, the priestGuido Genero of Ucid, an association of Christianmanager and entrepreneurs, where Franco Paviottiserves as president of the Udine section. Therewas also an official recognition by Acimall, theItalian association of wood technology manufac-turers: president Lorenzo Primultini and directorDario Corbetta honored Franco Paviotti with aplaque for his untiring commitment to the asso-ciation, in the role of vice president, and for theinnovation and quality contribution that he andhis partner Giorgio have given to the Italianindustry. In front of them, plenty of entrepreneurs– from Paolo Fantoni to Alessandro Calligaris, from Silvano Zamò to Luigi De Puppi, from EdiSnaidero to many more – and VIPs. Franco Paviottirecalled the milestones of his company’s history, before he gave a wonderful sculpture by ErosMorandini to Silvano Zamò, co-owner of Ilcam. And then it was the turn of the family: FrancoPaviotti called on stage Giorgio Paviotti, hishistorical business partner, and their wives Arianaand Laura, and children Andrea, Annalisa, Fannyand Luca. Then he called Metal World's entire fa-mily, inviting all employees on stage and introducingthem one by one, with one big final applausefrom the audience.

The news has been around for some time: MadeExpo 2017 (8-11 March) will see the official debutof an area dedicated to technology for woodenwindows and constructions, in addition to equivalentsolutions for Pvc and aluminum. It will be called“Woodworking Area”, an area coordinated byAcimall (the association of Italian wood technologysuppliers and the publisher of this magazine),further expanding the rich portfolio of productcategories lined up in the halls of the biennialevent. The area, located inside the “Made Envelopeand Windows” exhibition in hall 3, will offer op-portunities for meetings and professional updatefor many operators from the door and windowbusiness (in 2015 there were as many as 33thousand).“We are starting off cautiously – said Dario Cor-betta, Acimall director – but we really believe inthis opportunity we are developing with MadeEventi. We know well that constructions areemerging from a difficult period, with ups anddowns that have had a heavy impact on the in-vestment propensity of window manufacturersand anyone involved in the production of woodenelements for building envelopes. We know wehave a great opportunity to promote one of themany values of wood technology, not only inItaly. We are appreciated for secondary pro-cessing, for furniture production solutions, butthe manufacturers of made-in-Italy technologyalso offer a rich portfolio of housing solutions, and they will be able to show it at Made Expo, addressing a different audience from the traditionaloperators that visit our industry exhibitions".

THE NEXT MADE EXPOAccording to Cresme, a key reference in econo-metric analysis for the construction industry, in2017 we will benefit from 2.6 percent growth inconstruction investments. This figure adds to andfurther supports the forecasts for this year, whenAnce (the Italian association of construction com-panies) expects 0.3 percent increase in real termsand 1.3 percent in current terms, with even betterresults for extraordinary maintenance activities, closing this year at plus 1.9 percent (up by 21.3percent since 2008), and for renovation/requalifi-cation investments, which should increase by 1,3billion euro in 2016 (plus 1.9 percent versus2015).

GIOVANNI GRASSITo discuss this topic, we visited Giovanni Grassi, director of Made Eventi, to talk about this exhibition, launched in 2008 and now at its eighth edition.“No one can deny that Made Expo, in its earlyyears, tried to give the best possible interpretationof the needs of construction industries”, Grassinoted. “The exhibition came out of a story youall know, from a relocation to Milan, from earlytests with annual frequency and then the decision– as requested by its target industries – toswitch to biennial frequency. In 2017, the firstbiennial edition was held in March, which isdefinitely the most logical placement duringthe year, considering the international exhibitioncalendar and the needs of the different targetindustries. I want to stress, no matter howobvious it is, that Made Expo is and wants tobe increasingly international, so we deploystrategies that are not limited to the Italianmarket, but address a wider audience in termsof exhibitors and visitors alike, as well as rela-tionships with many other events organizedaround the world and addressing the sametarget of operators”.“We will offer a clear layout, with specializedexhibitions that help visitors and exhibitors find

their way within a clear context. Four shows –“Constructions and materials”, “Building Envelopeand Windows”, “Interiors and Finishings” and“Software, Technologies and Services” – repre-sent the foundation of our philosophy andprovide exhibitors with a context that fits theirbusiness and ensures a targeted flow of visitors, with a specific interest in that area...”“We have identified a clear layout, but this doesnot change the fact that we are promoting newcontacts.. There is another activity we are in-vesting in, supported by Ice which included

our event in the list of exhibitions of internationalrelevance, providing resources that enable usto give additional support to the international-ization of companies. I am referring to promotionabroad through information campaigns and in-vitations to delegations from 25 countries atleast... Another area of commitment, mainly fo-cused on the domestic market, is the organizationof events, conferences and demos during theexhibition... “In the latest event we had 1,450exhibitors, including 279 foreign companies;visitors were 208 thousand, 36 thousand from

abroad. This year we want to expand beyondthe 65 thousand square meters of the 2015event”. “With Acimall we are promoting this ini-tiative as we believe that it can become a majorpart of our exhibition, bringing satisfaction toboth parties. We will learn from the first experi-ence, it’s a challenge... we know that the eventcalendar in this segment is really dense, butwe have decided to start off together, to open anew road, to lay the first cornerstone onto whichwe can build the future". into three clear segments: Comec Technology, for the study, concept, design and productionof process solutions, machines that make up aline; Comec Cnc Wood, i.e. numerical controlworking center for standalone applications anda wide range of operations, and Camam, ex-clusively focused on traditional machines forchair production, while offering leading-edgehigh-automation solutions, in line with our dna…We have decided to renovate our manufacturingsites, building new factories and improving theexisting ones. At the end of this process, wewill have more than 10 thousand square metersof available shopfloor. Now we also want togive the group the image it deserves, incorpo-rating also Dlm, the third pillar of our construction, besides Comec and Camam. Dlm is an essentialpart of our business, because we make every-thing in house, from design to installation, up tothe final testing of any machine. The earlystages and machining operations are entrustedto Dlm, which is comprised of three departments:metal constructions and painting, turning andmilling, with eleven working centers, includinga brand new one we have purchased to increaseour capacity to handle really all types of ma-chining operations...This strategy also requiresto employ skilled engineers and technicians...”.“In 2015 we exceeded our revenue record, top-ping the ten million euro threshold. And weexpect 2016 to close with similar results, oreven better... Comec Group involves many fam-ilies and the future of enterprises lies inpeople, in creating jobs, employment, serenity. We must defend jobs, safeguard our industryto avoid losing one of the most valuable assetsa country can have...(l.r.)

Very popular brands in solid wood processing, prestigious projects, a vocation for special equip-ment, "impossible" machines, envied by everyone. But there’s more: Lucio Bergamasco, founderof the group, tells about the “second youth” of theFriuli-based company, born in 1970.“As you know, we were born in the Chair Triangleto meet the demand of specific operations in adistrict that represented a flower in the buttonholeof Italian industry. Then things changed andyou know what happened: the Triangle no longerexists. No one moved a finger to stop this dis-aster, and many small and big companies wentout of business. Even worse, we have to dealwith exacerbating bureaucracy, with a prolifer-ation of offices and responsibilities that onlyadd to complexity". “But we are not giving up”,Bergamasco states proudly. “We are opening anew phase of Comec Group, a season ofdeep reorganization and consolidation of anorganization that is doing very well; in recentyears we have improved our results all over theworld, showing that we are in the forefront whenit comes to “special” equipment for solid wood, for all types of operations. The first step was toreview the collaboration between Comec andCamam, a company we acquired several yearsago. The time is ripe to unify the sales networkand to clearly define the portfolio of each brand.Until now, the two companies have been ap-proaching the markets as independent organi-zation, each with its own offer and sales team. Now things are changing: each company willpreserve its portfolio..: Camam is closer to chairsolutions, while Comec is increasingly focusedon the design and construction of special equip-ment, really “tailor-made”. A brand new organi-zation, more consistent and effective, divided

THE FUTURE ACCORDING TO FRAVOLAndrea Volpato, owner of Fravol, is one of theyoungest entrepreneurs in our industry. That’sprobably why we feel a sort of “thrill” each timewe meet him, a unique enthusiasm in his words. “We have a great future ahead, for Fravol thismeans we keep innovating, searching for newideas or developing existing concepts. We willnot be strong again: we will get stronger, it’s abig difference! We have big dreams, plenty ofideas still closed in our drawers, and we havethe determination and energy to turn them intoreality – and this is essential”. “We keep receivingrequests for new machines: edgebanding is aprocess in constant evolution. Our approach isclear: on one hand, we offer “standard” machinesthat cover basic demand, on the other we arepromoting a "special" portfolio consisting ofhigh-performance custom solutions, a businessthat bigger competitors can hardly handle”.About thirty employees and a project to increasethe staff to dedicate more time and expertise toambitious projects. The market is the whole world, from Australia to Eastern Europe, from North Ame-rica to South Africa. The trend is really positive:orders have gone back to significant and constantvolumes, the revenues have gone back to thegolden years, or very close, although the situationis not fully stable.“There is still much work to be done”, Volpatoadds. “We have identified the right direction andthe right products for the market. Now we haveto strengthen our team, as I said. Also for thispurpose, Cesare Dal Monte has joined Fravolwith his experience: we have known him for along time, we had defined a collaboration betweenthe company where he worked, now acquiredby a big Italian group, and Fravol. We share sev-eral ideas and good project we want to implement.

With him, for instance, we had already designeda new relationship with suppliers, contacts thathad brought great benefits to his and our company, offering savings by 10-15 percent approximately".“To carry on a business successfully, we mustpay attention to three elements: continuous in-novation, market presence to plan constantgrowth, excellent control of costs and day-to-day management”, says Cesare Dal Monte.“We will make big steps forward”, Andrea Volpatocontinues. “We are a small company, but we arethe third-largest Italian manufacturer of edge-banding machines. Our catalog has more than400 pages....Today we are producing perfectmachines for joiners and handicraft businesses, advanced machines featuring all the necessaryaggregates to deliver the same results as biggerand more expensive solutions...We have extendedour proven technology to all our machines, re-designing our portfolio...At recent exhibitions wedisplayed our latest creations, including “Master”,where we have eliminated the butting unit andadopted a different aggregate to execute thesame operation, achieving a substantial reductionof noise with the same results for edges up tothree millimeters”. We were the first in 2010 to in-troduce laser edgebanding, although costs werestill unaffordable and then we found a differentsolution creating the first edgebanding machinethat could use Eva, polyurethane and polyolefinglues". “There is another topic we have to focuson, and that’s 3D printing, which has becomepredominant in modeling and prototyping. Weare working on that, we are studying the tech-nology to be ready, and also leveraging the ex-pertise of Dal Monte, I am confident we will findour way!”. (l.r.)

FOCUSTriveneto“TRIVENETO IS A COMPLEX SITUATION,BUT THE CHALLENGE IS THE WORLD...”So said Christian Salvador, talking as franklyas he usually does about the territory where hisfamily business was born and keeps growing atdouble-digit rates, another example of a companythat was able to react to the crisis. “It’s not easyto talk about Triveneto. It's a complex territory, inhabited by complex people, with a complexhistory. In the past it was just a region of Italydivided by the Piave river: a right side wherethe Adige river flows, and a left side crossed bythe Tagliamento river. This geographic divisioncaused strong rivalry between local communi-ties...The new generations do not have thesame characteristics as the previous ones, andmany companies have suffered from this change, also in our industry”. “…We don’t “think together”,we don’t “stand together” and you cannot avoidfeeling a sense of decadence of this territory, its people, companies, things...whether it’s fur-niture or woodworking machinery, you have toaccept that the situation is very different com-pared to ten, fifteen years ago: there are fewercompanies, lower quality, less revenues. Nichecompanies, whose revenues have significantlydecreased in the past decade, were unable toadapt and were taken over... One thing is forsure: in woodworking technology, the gap be-tween big and small has become wider andwider…”. What about Salvador? “Our businesswas born to meet the local demand of barcutting saws, which were soon complementedby solutions for solid wood cutting. We may callit a dual business, which helped us get in touchwith different types of customers, supported byexceptional levels of demand. The real “mo-mentous change” for us occurred few years

ago, when we decided to focus on solid woodmachines, as we realized that bars would be-come a niche business compared to thecutting/edgebanding cycle, which is now beingtransformed by nesting. In that period, it wasclear that we had to approach foreign markets,an essential strategy to change our vision...”.“We started to put specific questions to ourcustomers and ourselves, we started to realizethat we had to understand their logistic andmanufacturing needs, while becoming “woodpeople”, forget about iron and cables andfocus on how we could integrate our technology, the machines we can make, into a productioncycle with specific rules, timing and requirements…”. “In recent years we have more than doubledour revenues, despite the raging crisis. I haveto say it was easier to stand out in a difficultphase, because it forced us to make the mostof our virtues! .". “In this period of deep changes,Eastern Europe has remained our main outputmarket. We also recorded a strong rally in West-ern Europe, and despite Brexit, Great Britainis continuing to give much satisfaction. A greatsurprise after long inactivity was Scandinavia, and even Italy is giving excellent results, as wecould experience at the latest Xylexpo...Wehave a big head and a small body, as we loveto say. We think big like a global corporation, but we know what and how much we can pro-duce in the current situation.. In the future wewill commit to develop personal, economic andbusiness relationships that help us go farther. From all points of view...” (l.r.)

ZUANI, REKORD AND GARNIGA:HERE COMES TWT!The news dates back to a couple of months ago:Zuani and Rekord-Garniga have decided to jointheir forces. So we went to Rovereto to visit Zuani’ssite, now the headquarters of Twt-High TechTools. “The acronym stands for “Target WorkingTools”, says Mario Baldo, owner of Rekord-Gar-niga, now Managing Director of the new companyand, as many of you might remember, presidentof Acimall’s tools manufacturers group. “The mes-sage is clear: not only wood in our future, as itwas in the past, and we also want to seize allthe opportunities that we can leverage with a"stronger" organization. So, tools for differentapplications, for different results...”. “We havebeen thinking differently in the past few years, trying to figure out what it means to be strongerin certain business deals, especially at Europeanand international level”, says Mauro Fistarol, sales manager at Italia Twt with longstanding ex-perience in Rekord. “Then the crisis explodedand we set aside the project of a group thatcould support and deploy a common strategyin the field of solid wood processing tools forwindow production. But we did not forget it...”.“...The fact that Rekord and Zuani were neighborsdefinitely helped us – Baldo says – so thisinitiative was launched under the banner ofTrentino, our region, but in the future the groupmight be expanded with new members. Today, together, we have higher professional skills andwe constantly exchange ideas and experi-ence...we have been working together just forfew months, but we have already realized wehave done something significant and the marketis appreciating our willingness to face newchallenges, stronger and bigger than before".

“We have a clear goal”, Fistarol adds. “We wantto be innovative and effective, increase our rev-enues and our market presence, so as tobecome not only the most important Italiangroup in the business of window tools, but alsothe third-largest in the world...We have beensupported by our sales organizations, with Zuanihaving a stronger business in some countriesand Rekord in others. We had to redefine oursales network very easily and with no negativeimpact on total revenues. And most of all, allour partners have understood and appreciatedour joint project. The creation of Twt has beenwelcome as a message of continuity, proximity, quicker response to any request. We believe inthe domestic market, where we have alwaysinvested and are still investing, operating throughskilled “sales engineers”...”. Much water has flo-wed under the bridge since Garniga was theonly “brand” in this area. That experience gavebirth to several toolmakers based in Triveneto. There is not much to say about Zuani and Rekord:two strong organizations, standing out as key re-ferences for window manufacturing. Step by step, they will be progressively integrated, with nohurry, to avoid confusion among users: for a tran-sition period, the products will have a “combined”brand including the new and old names, so Twt-Rekord (“Top Fix”), Twt-Zuani (“Logi Fix”) andTwt-Garniga (“Uni Fix”). Twt currently has fiftyemployees generating over eight million eurorevenues. The headquarters were moved into theZuani premises, extending the manufacturingarea to 3 thousand square meters. Ownershipis “fifty-fifty”, equally divided. (l.r.)

EVENTS

INNOVATION FROM CEFLA LIVE!The latest edition of Cefla Live, the “open house”of the global giant of coating, once again showedthe liveliness of the Emilia-based company. During the event from 12 to 14 October, we wereguided on a tour by Roberto Bolognini, salesmanager of the Finishing Division. “Generally speaking, I want to say that thisedition of “Cefla Live” is important for us”, Bolo-gnini said. “We wanted to convey a more com-prehensive picture of Cefla, displaying all ourcoating technology and several news for thisseason; but unlike previous editions, we havealso created a space to give a unified overviewof what Cefla is and does today, from lighting tolarge plants, from energy cogeneration to shopand retail furniture, up to dental solutions”.

What's new. Bolognini first showed us “SmartClean 4.0”, “…a small revolution for panel clea-ning”, he explained. “We have complementedour portfolio of brush cleaning equipment withthis new option, a rubber-coated cylinder thatperfectly cleans a panel ready to be transferredto the coating state. With “Smart Clean 4.0” wehave automated an operation that many quali-ty-focused painting companies currently handlemanually for glossy surfaces or high-quality fin-ishing cycles”. “However, there is another emerg-ing trend”, Bolognini added. “I am referring toled drying. As you can see at this open house,Cefla has developed technologies that performexcellent crosslinking using Led lights, an ef-fective alternative to standard gallium-mercurysources. These ovens are increasingly appre-ciated, as they offer not only substantial energysaving, but also better predictability of radiationon the panel in transition; this application is en-abled by the progress of chemistry, with coatingsthat are more and more satisfied and perfectfor this type of cycle”.“And we should not forget the pervasive topicof Industry 4.0”, Bolognini says. “Also in this re-spect, we have promoted major developments, resulting into “cTracker”, a new supervisorytool that allows not only to work “smart”, tocontrol the entire coating cycle, but also tocollect a set of information, data and statisticsthat help us and our customers understandhow a plant is working, how it is operated, itsperformance levels...”.

This is a major step forward from the “Sprayorga-nizer” software, launched in 2003, which, despiteseveral developments, has now found a strongalternative for anyone interested in “smart manu-facturing”. The machines installed in a line canbe perform self-monitoring through continuousand advanced information exchange. There is another application that has made hugeprogress. It’s the “Inert” technology, i.e. the sy-stems developed to improve panels and their“coatability”, with much lower costs and cycle

time, as well as excel-lent results. At the latest Cefla Labwe experienced a newdevelopment. “Wehave carried on ourcommitment to panelprocessing beforecoating”, Roberto Bo-lognini explained. “Wehave devised a systemthat, through subse-quent steps and spe-cial belts, enables us to process the surface ofany panel, achieving excellent wood imitationby embossing a 3D pattern that replicates thetypical grain of real wood. The result is a true-to-life imitation that many panel manufacturerswanted to take a closer look at, as it is an ex-cellent alternative to the more expensive lami-nation processes we know well”.

Digital printing. This was another keyword ofthe latest edition of “Cefla Lab”, when the companyofficially announced the acquisition of a majoritystake in Jet Set, a Bergamo-based digital printingspecialist, as already reported in our magazine.“This is probably the biggest news from ourevent”, Bolognini commented. “We have beencommitting to digital printing for a long timenow, and not only for wood-based materials.Jet Set is a valuable addition for Cefla and forour plans in the coming years. We have acquiredtechnology that is revolutionizing many aspectsof finishing, far beyond our imagination. With anew company in our group boasting excellentexpertise both in “single pass” printing forhigher production volumes and in “multi pass”printing, ideal for small and medium enterprises,we will be able to quickly finalize several inno-vative projects we are working on…”

Several machines and solutions were exhibitedat “Cefla Lab”, including a coating system designedfor pre-assembled Pvc windows, to provide ma-ximum consistency and overcome the longstandingproblem of coating films. We also had anotherlook at “iGiottoAppX2”, featuring two articulatedarms for coating processes, designed to operateindependently or combined with a bigger version, offering greater productivity. The event further contributed to consolidate theyear 2016 which, as they said at Imola, is goingto exceed the results of 2015, namely with revenuesexceeding 440 million euro, confirming Cefla'sgrowth trend: from 2012 to 2015, production valuehas increased by 100 million and net assets byalmost 17 million, driven by the commitment of1,900 people in Italy and all over the world.

Roberto Bolognini.

There were so many requests that, at a certainpoint, they had to close registrations and tellpeople: “Sorry, we are sold out! We apologizebut...". That’s what happened at the latest BiesseInside, held in Pesaro last 13 to 15 October.Such a great interest is welcome for the entire in-dustry, which has long been waiting for a differentmood than we have got used to in the past eightyears. In Pesaro, everything went smooth accordingto plans: the location is always the same, the newand highly efficient "Biesse Campus", a permanentshowroom that has become the most effectiveshowcase for the group. The technology lineupwas impressive as usual: there was virtually eve-rything, from basic machines for windows up towaterjet cutting, an interesting program of sideevents (involving excellent suppliers and compa-nies-customers-testimonials), and a dedicatedarea for different software suites. “The result wasunprecedented attendance, so we had to repli-cate the event”, said an untiring Federico Broc-coli, Biesse Wood Division Director/Sales - Sub-sidiaries Division Director, whom we reached onthe phone between one business trip and another.“In October we stopped at three thousand peo-ple, because we knew that, hosting even morepeople, we would have affected the quality ofhospitality. So we decided to organize another“Biesse Inside”, breaking the rules, and fewhours after the announcement we had alreadyreceived 600 applications from operators whocame to Pesaro from 17 to 19 November. Whatcan I add? We are happy, very happy, becausethis means that we are doing exactly what ourcustomers want, need and look for. From a fi-nancial standpoint, this is a positive period andit would be absurd not to do all we can to seizeany opportunity...".Satisfaction is measurable, as both three-dayevents were up to their promise and combinedrecord attendance with record orders – exceedingsixteen million euro – more than twice thevolume of 2015, with a 16 percent increase in thenumber of visitors from five continents. Less than40 percent of operators attending “Biesse Inside"2016 came from Italy, the rest from abroad, although we are happy to know that most orderswere signed by Italian companies, which seemto have restored their propensity to invest...This was the icing on the cake of a year that willbe remembered. The Pesaro staff is cautiousabout the possible final result of 2016, but every-thing suggests that the 600 million euro targetis within reach. Such growth is driven by 4.0 te-chnology, i.e. “smart factory” solutions. The keytopic of the event was actually “Smart 4 all”, aslogan that suggested the possibility for all parti-cipants to have an all-round review of the potentialof digitization in the manufacturing industry. 4.0machinery, plants and software are perfect notonly for big, advanced manufacturing organizations, but also fit for and accessible to smaller businesseswilling to change their production methods, gainingcompetitiveness and optimizing their design andmanufacturing operations. As a result, attendancewas high at the workshops organized during

Biesse Inside by Accenture, Biesse Systems andWood-Skin, with in-depth presentations to an au-dience of over 400 customers.

“We are growing strong and the final months ofthe year have been more than encouraging”,Broccoli said at the press conference during theevent in Pesaro. “Everything suggests that thiswill be a record year in terms of orders and rev-enues. We will achieve double-digit growth forsure, with a strong trend, a great portfolio, thegreatest in our history”, he commented.

If we remember well, the final result last year wasvery close to 520 million euro. If the companyachieves the expected target, that would be amajor leap and the end of all crisis talks of recentyears. A key contribution to this result was givenby the company’s commitment to rationalizingand expanding the global network of sub-sidiaries and sales operations. The year 2016 has been a turning point after2015, which had already been largely positive.Booming growth: what has changed in Biesse? What has worked so well to achieve much betterperformance than competitors? There is another challenge that is probably playinga role, namely the new Plast division...“For some time now, we have decided to addressthe business of composite materials, advancedmaterials and plastics. It's a new business areathat Biesse wants to address, redefining its rolewhich dates back to a few decades ago. Nowwe want to devote all necessary energy and re-sources in this area: last May we made astrategic takeover, acquiring 100 percent ofUniteam in Thiene, a well-known brand in Italyand in the world, with over 11 million euro rev-enues in 2015. Uniteam builds excellent ma-chining centers which are complementary toour portfolio, focused on the segments of housingand advanced materials. In the latter business,Uniteam offers “high-Z” machinery, ideal toprocess large thermoformed parts or elements,a segment that was not covered by Biesse ma-chines...As to housing, we have acquired ex-pertise and know-how we did not have, so weare now ready and qualified to approach alsothe wood construction business. A new seasonis opening for us, a new challenge that webelieve will bring great satisfaction in the shortterm, providing Uniteam with all the resourcesand benefits that a group like Biesse can offer. This move is in line with one of our key strategiesfor medium-term business development, i.e.make Biesse more independent of housing-re-lated products and home decorations, becauseit can be "annoying” sometimes to be constrainedto the trends of the real estate market. We wantto expand into different industries, offer anti-cyclical products, with a medium and long-term vision that, starting from our solid technologyand know-how, can take us even further...

HOMAG TREFF

HOLZMA TREFF

Last September in Schopfloch, Germany, the pre-sent and future of Homag Group were illustratedat the “Homag Treff” open-house event, whichshowed not only the latest technology news fromthe German giant, but also their vision of businessdevelopment on a global scale. Over a 10,000-square-meter area, Homag displayed integratedsolutions from compact standalone machines toautomated plants for Batch One processing, fromnumerical control technology to surface finishing. Two key topics characterized the 2016 edition:the capacity to scale production from small han-dicraft businesses to large corporations, from fur-niture to doors, floorings and coatings, and theprospects for growth and implementation basedon the "Industry 4.0" approach. With a 3 percent increase in orders and 5 percentincrease in revenues in the January-August 2016period, the Group is making its way into the futurewith three different strategic steps, focused on2020: the first step (2016/2017) is “Fix the House”,i.e. consolidate the foundations to strengthen thesingle brand Homag rather than the individualbrands, while optimizing resources and productioninvestments according to an integrated and “stan-dardized” approach. The second step is driving process and productinnovation, leading to strong internationalizationin the 2017/2018 time frame. The third step is a sustainable and organic ap-proach to the industrial growth of the entire Groupin the 2018/2019 period, aiming to support thedevelopment process at a suitable pace to avoidexcessive stress on the organization. From amarket share of 28 percent in 2013, HomagGroup climbed up to 31 percent in 2015, with 3.7percent expected growth in the furniture businessin 2017, 3.3 percent in construction elements in2019 and 2.9 percent in wooden houses in 2020.This is constant improvement that goes beyondbig innovation leaps. An example of this approachis the family of edgebanding machines designedfor the production of interior doors. “Kal 370 Profi”gets smart and offers new opportunities in termsof flexibility and performance. The “Kal 600” sin-gle-sided edgebanding machine, featuring slidingchain and optionally equipped with grinding andfinishing aggregates such as “WZ14”, fits into thefamily of squaring-edgebanding by virtue of itsaccurate workpiece feed. Another highlight inSchopfloch were the new machines for the conti-nuous processing of office furniture, designed forthe edgebanding of parts at 45 degrees, combinedwith “laserTec Zero Edge” for edge processing. For the production of windows, the company in-troduced the recent enhancements to the rangeof Cnc working centers. Two examples: “power-Profiler Bmb 900”, equipped with the “woodWop”software, maximizes operating flexibility with newworkpiece clamping and handling devices, anadditional console for non-standard elements andthe possibility to process different types of profiles, angle connections and arched components. The working center “Baz 723” can mill and drilltwo parts simultaneously while edgebanding ortrimming only one of them.

From a “garage company” to a major brand of aglobal woodworking technology corporation. Fiftyyears of history were told last September at abig open-house event that gathered users andcustomers in the corporate headquarters, underthe motto: “We are panel dividing”. The starringcharacter was Holzma, a Homag Group brand, based in Calw-Holzbronn (Germany), with a 50-year record in the panel sawing business andprospects of further development and expansionin terms of products, technological offer and cu-stomer service. Founded by Erwin Lenkner in1966, Holzma is a typical example of how intuition, creativity and experience can lead to brilliant in-dustrial results. In the first six months of 2016,Holzma’s main production site expanded ordersand revenues, respectively up to 52.9 million euro(from 50.2 in 2015) and 43.3 million euro (41.1 in

2015); excellent results for the new business unitof Homag Group dedicated to “Panel Dividing”,which includes, besides the German headquarters, also the markets of China, Spain, Brazil and India, with an economic result in H1 this year equal to57.5 million euro in orders and 54.8 million euro inrevenues, with Ebit up by 5.3 million euro. As thecompany celebrates half a century in business, constant innovation in panel sawing, which hasalways been Holzma’s distinctive feature, generatedtwo new solutions for the woodworking industry. The first target is to streamline sawing operationsto optimize the use of raw materials on one hand, and the operator’s working time on the other. Akey solution in this area is the operator assistancesystem during the cutting cycle, based on Ledsignals, introduced at “Holzma Treff” on the panelsaw “Hpp 300 profiLine”. The intelligent workpiece

recognition system is also supported by the new10.02 version of “Cut Rite” software. The secondworld preview is called “module45”, a fast andaccurate bevel cutting system, with an easily ad-justable blade angle. The lineup at the internationalevent included entry-level machines and automatededgebanding units by Brandt. Büftering presentedseries “Swt 200” for belt sanding and “Swt 300with powerTouch”, a sanding center offering greatease of use, control and programming. Debutingat “Holzma Treff” in 2016, Dürr exhibited itsportfolio for the coating industry. Homag Auto-mation an integrated line that combines the hori-zontal storage system “Tfl 211” with Holzma “Hpp300 profiLine” panel saw and a combination ofautomated edgebanding machines with Brandt’s“1650 airTec” and a "Boomerang® Tfu140” han-dling system. re parts) to be packaged in realtime. NORBORD CHOOSES BUETTNER

On 12 October Modena hosted the conference-exhibition"Forum Meccatronica" entitled "The integration of tech-nologies, added value for Industry 4.0." What follows is an abstract from the intervention ofSimone Brisacani, Sales Product Management ElectricDrive Controls of Bosch Rexroth.

The concepts of Industry 4.0 are gradually becomingpart of the daily activities of machine manufacturersand end users, while productivity remains a key issueas not to lose competitiveness in the market. Theincrease of the data coming from the interconnecteddevices and machines makes necessary the use ofanalysis tools that make the actionable data, favoringthe improvement of performance of the entire productioncycle. The Date Analytic Server is one of the most ef-fective innovations created by Bosch Rexroth for theIndustry 4.0. Thanks to its technology analyzes simul-taneously and in real time the data of all connectedmachines, allowing to assess performance and possibleinterventions. Uses reliable connections to connectthe machines to the IT world, it analyzes, and displaysfor the machine data users, increasing the availability, productivity and energy efficiency of production lines. To do that are detected and monitored all sensitivedata from drives and sensors, conveying informationthrough standardized communication protocols suchas “Opc Ua” and “Sercos”, storing them on local data-base or cloud. The analysis of the data takes place viafunctional methods, ensuring an effective ConditionMonitoring of all the connected machines. In additionthe analysis tools integrated into the Process Monitoring, for the optimization of cycle times and energy con-sumption, are correlated between the control data andthose of intelligent drives. The Generic Data Serveralso stores all error messages in a special register, al-lowing the traceability of the causes and frequency ofproduction halts, for the entire cycle of the machinelife. In this way, users can systematically identify thecauses of problems and reduce downtime in the longterm. The display of the data line can easily be entrustedto an electronic whiteboard, integrating the productionand quality planning functions. All relevant informationthen become available in real time to all departments, increasing the efficiency of processes by clear analysisthat allow you to quickly take actions on the machines. Also through the availability of web server data, allowsaccess to all factory levels, in different ways based onareas of expertise and making it possible to accesseven through portable or remote devices. The webpages can be made directly online. The differentavailable widgets allow to create custom views basedon the need of the hour, avoiding the waiting timetypical of normal Scada/Mes/Erp. The status of themachines can be easily monitored by the technicalsupport of the machine manufacturer. This providesmany benefits to end users. Finally the Industry 4.0 isnot an issue that only affects the finished product, butextends to all those elements involved in the whole lifecycle, including the machines.

cating an existing continuous press from its factoryin Alberta, Canada, to Inverness, Scotland. Theorder for a new Osb drum dryer with the corre-sponding energy plant has been placed with theSiempelkamp subsidiary Büttner. The single-path drum dryer sized 6.5 x 36 R will have athroughput capacity for dry strands of 45 t/h.Along with the air process equipment, steel supportstructures and insulation, the scope of deliverywill also include a 500 cubic meters wet-materialhorizontal metering bin. The energy plant with a

total combustion capacity of 55 MW will use a 75square meters grate to generate around 40 MWof flue gas for heating the dryers and 15 MW forheating thermal oil. As with the drum dryer, Büttnerwill also be supplying the entire range of equipmentfrom a moving floor for the fuel storage to theprimary circulation system for thermal oil, whichwill include the piping, brick lining, steel construction, and insulation. The complete assembly of thedryer and energy plant is also part of Büttner'sscope of delivery and is scheduled to be concludedby the middle of 2017. This order once again con-firms Büttner’s “all from a single source” compe-tence. Customers ordering the combination ofdryer and energy plant benefit from an integratedsystem. From engineering to startup, both productsare perfectly coordinated to one another.

DASSAULT-XTREEE:THE 3D PAVILION

XtreeE and its partner Dassault Systèmes areunveiling the 3D pavilion, a first in Europe. Thestructure’s organic design is in the form of acoffee bean, with walls that echo shapes found inforests. Generative design exploration lets desi-gners and architects create such biomimeticforms. Architects and engineers used the 3DEx-perience cloud systems of Dassault Systèmesin order to work collaboratively to this project. The concept of using additive construction tomanufacture building components may be thenext step in the evolution toward prefabrication.Additive construction takes those benefits a stepfurther. It allows fabricators to produce highlycomplex one-off shapes at a controlled cost.

By using parametric design to create an opti-mized component, less material is needed, leading to lighter products and less waste. XtreeE digitally optimized and automated theconstruction of its pavilion’s components fromthe initial design phase and later assembledthem at the construction site. This minimizedthe materials used and eliminated the need totransport excess materials to and from thesite, reducing construction costs and improvingstructural performance. Its architects were freefrom the constraints of linear concrete formsused in construction thanks to digital designdata that, when programmed into the industrialrobot, layered materials with variable anglesor thicknesses and created shapes that arenot possible with traditional concrete. Additivemanufacturing allowed continuous manufac-turing processes for the walls and roof.

MARKETS

Last June, the United Kingdom decided to leaveEurope. A historical decision that should havean impact on the global economy, and conse-quently also on the manufacturing industries weare familiar with. However, in the post-vote months, the glamor of the event has lost momentum, leaving a trail of uncertainty. Now that the Brexitthreat has become real, the debate about theeconomic effects of UK leaving the EU ismassive, with a widespread agreement that it willhave a negative impact on the Gdp of the UnitedKingdom and its major partners, however to va-riable extents. It is hard to estimate the magnitudeof such effects, because the economic conse-quences will largely depend on political develop-ment and the approach of British and Europeaninstitutions to the exit strategy. Apart from strongmarket volatility in the short term, the long-termeffects of Brexit are hard to figure out and the po-litical situation hardly predictable. In the shortterm, the pound is exposed to further depreciation:the week after the vote opened with a dollar ex-change rate at a 30-year minimum (1.32). Implicitvolatility after one month, which in June had fallenback to the values of the immediate aftermath ofthe Lehman Brothers bankrupt in 2008, went upagain after the vote. Much smaller, though in-creasing, volatility of the euro/dollar exchangerate suggests that further depreciation of theBritish pound should not have a strong impact onsuch exchange. This has already occurred whenthe referendum results were published: the poundvalue dropped by ten percent, while the Euro lostless than three percent to the US dollar. The EUwill include 28 members until the end of the exitnegotiations, a procedure that might begin not sosoon. So, the United Kingdom will be a EUmember until the end of negotiations, British re-presentatives in the EU parliament and institutionswill keep their jobs, and the British governmentwill chair the European Union Council in thesecond semester of 2017. This situation is critical, because according to article 50 of the Treaty ofLisbon, a receding member state cannot be in-volved in decision-making concerning its own af-fairs, so Great Britain might not be allowed tochair the meetings of the Council for the exit ne-gotiations. Whatever the agreement between EUand United Kingdom, the latter will have a weakerposition in the single market. Even if they joinedthe European Economic Area, together withNorway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, as many Lea-vers hope, the British contribution to the EUbudget would decrease and the UK would havevirtually full access to the EU market, but theywould have to accept all decision, directives andregulations without the possibility to influence anydecision. Moreover, as EU-level agreements coverBritish trade relationships with more than 60 Wtocountries the United Kingdom should renegotiatenot only its access to the Single European Market, but also the agreements with all trade partners, complying with Wto rules. Even London’s role asglobal financial center is jeopardized, as institutionsbased in the British capital will lose their Europeanpassport, which ensures the mutual recognitionof investment activities and financial serviceswithin Europe, and will have to be renegotiatedas well. In this respect, some big banks likeHsbc, JP Morgan Chase and Goldman Sachshave already started preparations to move someoperations to Dublin, Paris and Frankfurt. Thefuture prospects and solidity of British economystart to be questioned also by external observers.

After the referendum, Standard & Poor’s and Fitchcut the UK rating from triple-A to double-A; thisdowngrade reflects the risk of deterioration of ex-ternal financing conditions. In the framework ofinternational relations, the United Kingdom, onceout of the EU, might become a less effective andreliable partner for the United States. No matterwhen negotiations start, they might last muchlonger than two years, which is the minimum ti-mespan required by the Treaty of Lisbon. The falling confidence of companies and thedrop of direct and portfolio investments causedby the enduring situation of uncertainty will hit themost capital-intensive industries (constructions, oil and mining, aerospace), and the capital flight, combined with huge deficit in foreign trade ac-counts, will cause further depreciation of thepound, which according to some analysts mighteven reach parity with the US dollar. Without anynumerical estimate of the impact on economy, the British monetary authorities had long warnedabout the fact that a Brexit vote would havecaused an additional, even violent, depreciationof the pound, with consequences on inflation.Domestic demand would collapse, as familiesreduce their consumption and companies stopinvesting, with negative impact on employment. All of this would lead to recession, as the exportboost of a depreciated pound would only partiallycompensate for the shrinkage of the domesticmarket. According to Oecd, the negative impactof Brexit on Gdp growth in the United Kingdomwill be equal to 0.5 percent in 2016, 2017 and2018, and 1.5 percent in 2019, with a 3 percentloss by 2020 and 6 percent by 2030. The averagecost for each family until 2030 ranges from a mi-nimum of 3,200 pounds in the basic scenario upto 5,000 pounds annually. The intensity of impact on each European economywill depend on the strength of current ties withthe United Kingdom. The Brexit sensitivity indexcreated by Standard & Poor’s is based on com-mercial and financial relationships, direct inve-stments and bilateral migration flows betweenthe UK and twenty European countries. Ireland,Malta, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Switzerland arethe top-five economies at risk. Italy comes secondlast, with mainly commercial risks: the UnitedKingdom is the fourth destination of Italian products, with 23 billion export in 2015 that might be affectedby the UK’s exit from the free trade area; but thisis just 5.4 percent of Italian sales abroad. However, independently of commercial and financial tieswith the United Kingdom, it is worth stressing thatItaly will be affected by the climate of uncertaintygenerated by Brexit, just like other Eurozone pe-riphery countries. Political consequences outsidethe British borders are just as important as eco-nomic factors. The long-term vision is a dual-speed Europe, with a group of countries that areprogressing towards financial and political union, and another group simply involved in the free cir-culation of goods, services and capitals. A chainreaction triggered by Brexit might cause casualtiesin the group of countries that call for more inte-gration. Such threat must be stopped with a quickand resolute execution of the United Kingdom’sexit from the EU. This period, is also an opportunityfor all Eurozone countries: the EU must write anew page in its progress towards political union.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

ETIOPIA, EMERGING AFRICAIn a more and more global scenario, it is importantto take a look at emerging markets, regions thatcurrently do not offer quick return on investments, but in the medium-long term might bring significantbusiness opportunities. In this issue we are pre-senting Ethiopia, following a recent conference inRome, organized by Ice – Italian Foreign TradeAgency in collaboration with Cna (Italian Federationof handicraft and small-medium businesses). To begin with, Ethiopia features one of the world'shighest growth rates, on average close to 10 per-cent (we are talking about gross domestic product).Economic expansion has been largely driven byexpansive policies implemented by the nationalgovernment. The goal is to support import and direct foreigninvestments. A turning point for the country is thetransition from an agriculture-based economy ba-sed to industrial development, required to supportgrowth. Currently, the manufacturing industry con-tributes 14 percent of Gdp, still a small sharecompared to developed economies.Government policies to support foreign investorsinclude interesting measures like 100 percentexemption from customs duties for instrumentalgoods, construction materials and spare partsfor a value of 15 percent on the total value of in-strumental goods to be imported. As to inflation, in 2014 the Ethiopian government– through restrictive monetary policy, credit crunch, reactivation of the market of treasury bills, subsidiesfor the agrofood industry – aimed at keeping theinflation rate below 10 percent. Despite satisfactoryresults, in July 2015 inflation rose to almost 12percent, due to a considerable increase in theprice of food products. Nevertheless, for March 2016, the Ethiopian sta-tistics agency recorded a 7.3 percent level forfood inflation and 7.8 percent for non-food pro-ducts.To close macroeconomic considerations, we willcomment upon some variables listed in table 1:despite the constant growth of Gdp, there are stillsome critical issues typical of a country that stillbelongs to the Third World.

Inflation rate is largely above 5 percent and importkeeps growing, due to the necessity of sourcinggoods from across the borders. This trend is alsoevident from the negative trade balance.

THE INDUSTRYUnfortunately there are only few figures to describethe wood industry. However, from our sources wecould identify three key aspects: the countryneeds technology above all, raw material availabilityis good, and at present the use of wood is veryinefficient.Table 2 clearly shows that, while the availabilityof wood for processing operations is relativelygood, the output share of finished or semifinishedproducts is really low. Veneered panels, the mostpopular semifinished material, only account for 2percent of logs addressed to industrial applications, despite the fact that Ethiopia is the sixth Africancountry for available wood resources (table 3).This is a significant detail, as large availability re-duces the need for wood import, often subject toduties, restrictions and other barriers.Talking about technology an interesting trend isexpanding export of woodworking machinery bythe world's top-six manufacturing countries (Italy,Germany, China, Taiwan, Austria and the UnitedStates). Interesting growth rates mainly concernleveling, planing and milling machines. On the whole, growth in 2015 amounted to 61percent.
