As you know, the First Step Foundation cares for children with limited capabilities. Ten years ago they rescued children from the Kaspi Children’s Home and continue to care for them till this day. These children have been devoid of parental care throughout this time. From now on, along with the First Step, Our foundation will do its best to create a family environment for them.” A Note From the Famous Georgian Opera singer Paata Burchuladze A 10-year endeavour has finally come to an end as the First Step Foundation accomplished the chief goal it was founded for in 1998.The decrepit institution, “Psycho-neurological home” in Kaspi will close its door during 2008. For those who do not remember the First Step’s inception, we must go back to the winter of 1993/94 when several children died in the Kaspi house due to cold and hunger and some gracious people took it upon themselves to rescue the other children. One-by-one, children were taken away from the insufferable condi- tions of the Kaspi house and placed in other homes while 15 children who had become of age were sent to two communities. Eventually, the First Step managed to commit the government into dealing with the Kaspi psy- cho-neurological home issue until finally the Ministry of Education and Science committed to close the home during 2008. Through the support of the Next Step Foundation, UNICEF, and anonymous donor organiza- tions, the First Step was able to renovate the Kodjori Children’s Home to accommodate the remaining 25 children from Kaspi. In addition TFS has purchased furniture and equipment for kodjori and trained personnel to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for these very vulner- able children. The next step is to work with parents, to see if it would be possible to return some of these children to their birth families. Together with the government and other benevolent persons, the First Step is also working on the issue of adoption of other children. As it is well recognized that rehabilitation and development of children with disability is much easier and more effective in a family environment. THE END OF THE KASPI EPOCH In March, the First Step Foundation and four of its young adults received an invaluable gift from a world star. Paata Burchuladze’s charity foundation, “The Iavnana” purchased a house in Ksovrisi, a village in the Mtskheta region where Giorgi, Roma, Kristine and Olya will live together with their caregivers. For ten years, the First Step has been engaged in the patronage, education and teaching of children and adolescents with intellectual disability. The resident-children that have grown up in this time now need a mature environment of their own. Thanks to funds generated from a concert organized by Paata Burchuladze, these four adults will soon have a home of their own. The First Step will now train caregivers who will help Giorgi, Roma, Kristine and Olya live independently. While such practices are common around the world, this is the first such a program will have been implemented in Georgia. Please help us support Giorgi, Roma, Kristine and Olya as they enter a new phase of their lives – we shall certainly keep you abreast of their first steps in this new direction. FIRST STEPS INTO HOUSE OF THEIR OWN The Next Step - Children of the Caucasus Patron Mary Robinson The Next Step was registered as a charity in Ireland in 2001 and in the United Kingdom in 2005. These charitable foundations support the work of their sister NGO, The First Step. They do this by running fundraising events and they receive significant funding from private individuals and charitable private foundations. The First Step Our vision: A Georgian society that provides equal opportunity to all to fully realize individual potential; to increase personal well-being; to contribute to common welfare; and, to ensure that children with intellectual and physical disabilities are a fully empowered part of society. The First Step (TFS) was founded in 1998 in response to the horren- dous living conditions of disabled orphans living in the state-run Kaspi Institution in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Ten year later, we are proud to have grown and accomplished so much to help these children lead meaningful lives through better living conditions and proper care. Their lives are enriched thanks to our charitable work and the selfless donations of our worldwide donors. Today, these chil- dren’s eyes are filled with hope instead of despair as they reach for their personal potential as constructive members of society. Newsletter May 2008 The First Step Foundation Our mission: To promote social inclusion of intellectually and physically disabled children, to improve their level of care and living conditions, to remove the stigma which society continues to harbor against physical and intellectual imperfections in children, and to raise awareness and tolerance of their special needs through provision of services to the children and their families. In December 2007 the Christ- mas lunch Committee under the chairmanship of Linda Sut- cliffe ran the seventh Christmas lunch in Dublin which has now become an annual event. The committee and their support- ers have now raised more than half a million Euro for these children. A BIG THANK YOU FOR THEIR DEDICATED AND UNSELFISH WORK IN THIS CAUSE. The Next Step Christmas lunch in December 2007 raised Euro 80,000 for Georgian Children with intellectual disability. Clongowes is one of the leading Irish secondary boarding schools which has a long tradition of assisting charity. Sixteen years ago they came up with the idea of creating a big yellow Duck and pushing it from Dublin to Limerick after school closes in June. Along the way they collect money. In 2007 they collected a record EURO160,000 – Euro 120,000was given to Crumlin Childrens’ Hospital in Dublin for much needed equipment and Euro 40,000 to the Next Step charity for its activities in Georgia. This money has already been spent on the rehabilitation of a building in Kodjori which will be home to 25 children from Kaspi Orphanage. This is wonderful support from Irish boys for some very vulnerable children. THANK YOU!
