    Seconds and thirds again add up to first for Trenton

    Sarah Wiltse swam on the winning 400 free relay and scored points in the 50 and 100 free events for Trenton, which beat Carlson by 25 points for the News-Herald title.

    In addition to swimming on the winning 400 free relay,Trentons Megan Pek was second in both the individual

    medley and the butterfly.

    The Trenton girls swimming teamwon their second consecutiveNews-Herald Swimming andDiving championship at AllenPark High School on Saturday

    with 304 points.Diving was a key event for the Trojans

    and their second- third- and seventh-place finishes in that event earned acombined 32 points, just enough to pushthem over second-place Carlson, whichfinished with 279 points.

    Trentons only first-place finish of the

    day came in the last event when SarahWiltse, Gabrielle Wojtala, Madi Day andMegan Pek combined to swim 3 minutes,57.72 seconds in the 400 free relay.

    The Trojans used eight second-place finishes to pile up their point onSaturday. They also had at least twoscoring finishes in all the individualevents throughout the day.

    Pek in the 200 free and fly, JaimeePerugi in the 50 free and 100 free andJessa Passerman in the back, all con-tributed second-place finishes to theTrojan effort.

    Each of those events, except Perugis100 free, made a state cut.

    Trenton also got state-cut swims fromits 200 free relay team and its 400 freerelay team.

    Personal bests were posted by Trojans

    Day, Wojtala, Pek, Perugi, Wilste, CatMiller, Maddie Moody, Sydney Watson,Emily King, and Emily Kemp.

    Eventual runner-up Carlson got themeet started with a first-place finish inthe 200-medley relay with a state quali-

    fying time of 1:57.64.Trenton finished second, dropping

    three seconds to 1:59.37, also a statequalifying time.

    The Marauders dominated the gold-medal performances, winning half ofthe days events.

    Other first place finishes for Carlsoncame from Sarah Cameron in the 200IM(2:13.95) and the fly (1:02.53), Haley Blairin the 100 free (56.78), the 200-free andTessa Glover in the breast (1:14.12). Allfirst-place finishes were a state qualify-ing time.

    The sprint relay was also a school-best varsity time for the Marauders.

    Sixth-place Grosse Ile saw two statecuts with first place finishes from AbbyMiklos in the 200 free (2:03.08) and the500 free (5:29.11).

    Riverviews only first place finishcame from Nicole Karl in the 50-freewith a state-cut time of 25.69.

    Roosevelts sole first came as no sur-prise when Clare Sutka made a state cutin the backstroke with a finish time of1:02.35.

    Host, Allen Parks only first-place fin-ish was in diving where Shainna Yacoubscored 362.80 points to win the event.

    Trentons Lauren Thackery (345.75)and Maddie Moody (305.05) finished sec-ond and third.

    Trenton Coach Jim Lawrence said hewas not surprised by the Carlson efforton the day, knowing they were rested

    and ready to go.We dont have the front line kids

    they do, Lawrence said. We just havemore depth.
