The bills, due March 4, 2014, show these categories: Money Owed by Your Taxing Districts, Pension and Healthcare Amounts Promised by Your Tax- ing Districts, Amount of Pension and Healthcare Shortage, Percentage of Pension and Healthcare Costs Taxing Districts Can Pay. “Read your bill to see how much debt your local government is carrying,” Pappas said. “We want you to see what’s behind the bill.” Pappas said taxpayers “should be aware of how local government debt af- fects their finances. Just as they need to know how much credit card debt they have, taxpay- ers should know their lo- cal government debt. This information should be a wake-up call: Your local government debt is like having seven to 20 credit cards you may not know you had.” Lawrence Msall, presi- dent of the Civic Federa- tion, said the bill not only gives taxpayers infor- mation about total debt, but breaks out pension and healthcare costs that threaten to overwhelm lo- cal governments. “By putting these num- bers on individual prop- erty tax bills, Treasurer Pappas has taken an im- portant step toward edu- cating taxpayers about the crippling level of debt and pension obligations car- ried by many of our local governments,” Msall said. “These obligations are a growing threat to the fis- cal and economic stability of our communities.” Pappas said that peo- ple have a right to know where their tax money is going, and showing them the debt of the govern- ments closest to them, local governments, “is transparency in its highest form.” Pappas explained that the information comes from the Debt Disclosure Ordinance (DDO), which requires all primary local governments across Cook County to report their fi- nancial data yearly to the Treasurer’s Office. Pap- pas also put the DDO data on cookcountytreasurer. com, where taxpayers can look deeper into the finances of the individual taxing districts that claim shares of their tax bill. Lend Me Your Ear... Greetings, fine readers of mine! Toots is very bedazzled today. Oops wrong word. Bedazzled - meaning enchanted, to impress forcefully. Okay, that sounds good to me too! But I meant to say frazzled - to be in a state of extreme nervous fa-tigue. Wow, sounds scary. And it’s really weird! Toots has 84 different things going on today and everything seems to be going along pretty good - almost in an orga-nized fashion. So why is Toots frazzled? Because everything is going along and Toots has yet to suf-fer a melt down. This never happens and Toots is suspicious. What big thing has she forgot-ten, who is waiting for her where, is Toots final-ly in the Twilight Zone? What the heck is happen-ing? No one is yelling and screaming, laying on the ground, clawing, yelping... This is not usu-al in Toots’ crazy world. Nothing is ever in a neat little package being held by smiling people. So, why is Toots nuts?

She should be relishing in this great state. Relax Toots! I’ve heard this altered state takes place every now and then. Go with the program, for cry eye! Go forth into the big world and bedazzle, is what I say. Much more fun that way! Oh, and by the way - Toots finally has it, found it, will never let it go, will treasure it, can not believe it - yep, I have the “magic” hat. It’s a great over-sized stocking hat and me loves it for all reasons. You all know that if Toots loves it - she will treasure forever. Let me tell you a bit about “old grey”. And yes, I know that some of you will scream out “aha, she has spelled a word wrong.” Don’t get your panties in a bunch - you should know by now there is always a method to Toots’ mad-ness. You may think that Toots can make a mistake - but throw that from your thought pro-cesses. Won’t happen. Gray is used primarily in the United States and

other areas that use U.S. English. Grey is used in Great Britain and areas that use UK English. And do you think the Toots spends all her time in the U.S.? Toots may be a Brit for all you know. Okay, Madame Editor - Toots shall wrap it up. I love “old grey” because it keeps me head warm and it gives me good hair. Toots is known for her tangled, wild, red nest of hair. Say it ain’t so, Toots. Magic hat direc-tions: wash hair, put hat onto wet hair, leave on for one hour, take off and Wallah! (and Wallah is slang for Voila! - taken from the French. Yes, me does get around). So off comes the hat and Toots has real hair - you may call it hat head if you like. Oh, and of further note: Toots will be skirt-ing around town in “old grey” all of summer too. Now isn’t that special? Sorry Madame Editor, I am so easily distracted from topic at hand. Don’t know what magic hat has to do with the column So... My lesson of the week is: Take one day at a time and don’t worry about what happened yesterday and don’t con-cern yourself with what might happen tomorrow. Today is a gift and treat it that way. Work with the mantra of Toots - “Seize The Day”. You must cel-ebrate every day! And... strive for good hair.

‘til next week...Toots Malone

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipin-ski has once again intro-duced a resolution in the House of Representatives praising the outstanding work of Catholic schools and honoring National Catholic Schools Week. The theme for this year’s Catholic Schools Week — which runs from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1 — is “Catho-lic Schools: Communi-ties of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” “As a proud graduate of Catholic grammar school and high school, every year I look forward to highlighting the achieve-ments of America’s Cath-olic schools during Cath-olic Schools Week,” Rep. Lipinski said. “The Chi-cago Archdiocese and the Joliet Diocese run two of the very best school sys-tems in the country, regu-larly producing graduates who are successful in their chosen fields and go on to become leaders in their communities. Visit-ing the students, teach-ers, and administrators at our Catholic schools throughout this special week is always inspiring. It is one of the highlights of my year.” During Catholic Schools

Week, Rep. Lipinski vis-its and speaks at Catho-lic schools throughout his district. Among the schools he is scheduled to visit this year are St. Francis Xavier School in LaGrange, SS. Cyril & Methodius School in Lemont and St. Catherine of Alexandria School in Oak Lawn. Rep. Lipinski’s resolu-tion, H.Res. 461, praises Catholic schools for in-stilling a “broad, values-added education empha-sizing the lifelong devel-opment of moral, intel-lectual, physical, and so-cial values in young peo-ple in the United States.” It also notes that in the 2012-13 school year, the total Catholic school student enrollment was more than 2 million, with an outstanding student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. The graduation rate for Catholic high school stu-dents is 99 percent, with 85 percent of graduates going on to four-year col-leges. Today, more than

15 percent of students in Catholic schools are not Catholic. Over the past 30 years, the percentage of minority students en-rolled in Catholic schools has more than doubled. “On behalf of Catho-lic educators across the country, we are grateful to Congressman Lipin-ski and the co-sponsors of this resolution in sup-port of Catholic educa-tion and National Catho-lic Schools Week,” said Brother Robert Bimonte, FSC, President of the National Catholic Edu-cational Association. “This week is not only a celebration but a timely reminder that Catholic schools are both a gift to the Church and to the nation that must be trea-sured and preserved.” This year marks the 40th anniversary of Catholic Schools Week, as des-ignated by the National Catholic Educational As-sociation and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Poets Pen…Be My Valentine

by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) MurdaughJohnny was only fi ve years old

Not old enough to pardonAs Valentine’s Day rolls around

And going to Kindergarten.

His teacher told the classTo make a Valentine card

She’d shown them how it’s doneAnd wouldn’t be too hard.

She gave them all some paperA box of crayons too

And showed them how to fold itTo have the best view.

After you colored it and followedThe instructions up above

Write something nice and send itTo the ones that you love.

Johnny folded the paper in halfThen folded it once again

And he drew a border around itUsing his ball point pen

Then he took out his red crayonsAnd drew a large heart

He wrote these words inside itI felt a tear drop start.

Will you Be My Valentine, MomBecause I love you so

I haven’t told you that too oftenBut I want you to know.

Since the years of 1978 and 1979But don’t know a reason.

Now that was thirty five years agoWe got over eighty inches

And that was an awful lot of snowThat fell on park benches.

They say from January 1st to 23rd Is when we got the most

Which was a total of 44.8 inchesBut I don’t want to boast.

But about the coldest temperatureI’m not so sure about that

I do think that we’ve come closeBut I wouldn’t bet my hat.

There is one thing that I do knowThis weather’s not for me

For I’m nothing but a country boyJust west of Tennessee.

It’s a small town called BlythevilleIn the state of Arkansas

Where I used to pick some cottonWith my brother, Ma and Pa.

years, each student will engage in eight trips/ex-periences which include plays, symphonies, op-eras, music and dance performances, museums, special exhibits and cul-tural programs. The Neo-Futurists (pic-tured above), a troop of actors, did an abbreviated show of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

for the seniors. This is a show that has been run-ning for 25 years down-town. The actors did 15 plays in 30 minutes for the senior girls. After the performance, the girls were broken down into smaller groups to attend three workshops about motivation, their particu-lar style of performance, etc. run by the actors.

our Lady of the Snows Council of Catholic Women to meetMembers of the Council of Catholic Women are invited to the St. Valentine’s meeting to be held on Monday, February 3, opening in church with a Benediction prayer service led by pastor, Father Stan at 7:00 p.m. Guild #1 will host the busi-ness and social gathering in Kinsella Hall of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, 4810 S. Leamington Avenue. Refreshments, a raffle, and an informational speaker will be featured. C.C.W. members and parishioners are asked to donate their favorite bakery goods and ethnic specialties to make the bake sale on February 8-9 a suc-cess. Monetary donations are also accepted in lieu of baked goods. The special intentions of all who work, bake, donate and support the bake sale will be re-membered in a special Mass of Thanksgiving on the weekend of February 16-17.

I confess that I haven’t watched the Grammys in many years. It’s hard to watch the recording industry congratulate it-self for mediocrity. Not to mention that the show was notoriously out of touch with the contempo-rary scene. And often just plain boring. Who cares who won the award for the Best Asst. Gofer On A Spoken Word Album? Things have changed dramatically since I last watched as evidenced by the opening performance by Beyonce. Can they do that on prime time TV? The performance was so graphic and explicit that it was ludicrous when the censors bleeped out lyr-ics. I can only speak for

the men, but hey guys, did you even notice any lyrics? If this perfor-mance were any more explicit they would have had to hand out condoms to the audience. There’s a lot more mu-sic and a lot less boring awards on the show now. Spectacle is big, as it has been for a while in pop. Witness the Beyonce and Katy Perry numbers. The music is more contem-porary, with a nod to the past. And the awards are still mostly about sales rather than artistic merit. Highlights: The Beatles won a Lifetime Achieve-ment Award. Paul Mc-Cartney won for Best Rock Song That No-body Has Heard. I’m not

sure why Chicago was there. Perhaps they won an award for Best Trib-ute Band. Stevie Won-der proved that he can make even robots sound funky when he jammed with Daft Punk on “Get Lucky”. Yoko Ono proved that an octogenar-ian can shake her booty and still look good in the process. The biggest lowlight? The producers and direc-tors of the show proved beyond any doubt that the Grammys are all about commercialism and not the music. They cut off Trent Reznor and the Queens Of The Stone Age in mid-song at the end of the show after the credits ran out. Who does that on the music indus-try’s biggest showcase?

* * * Burglars entered the side door of the Star-bucks at 4701 S. Cicero, but apparently failed to steal much. A passerby reportedly discovered the crime at 3:15 a.m. Fri-day, Jan. 24. He told au-thorities that he walked inside to investigate and saw cash register draw-ers lying on the floor. He flagged down a passing Cook County Sheriff’s officer and alerted him

to the situation. Later, a Starbucks manager told CPD that the coffee shop does not keep cash in its registers overnight, and that the only thing that appeared to be stolen was a tip jar.

* * * A 23-year-old Archer Heights man was robbed at gunpoint as he worked on his SUV in his garage near 47th and Tripp. The crime occurred at 6:20 p.m. on Jan. 21st. The victim said he felt a poke in his back and discov-ered that he was being held up. The offenders stole $50 cash and the victim’s revolver, which was in a cabinet in the garage. They then fled on foot, west on 47th Street. One robber is described as a white man, 5’10, light complexion, wear-ing a red hoody and a black ski mask. The other is described as a Hispanic man, 5’9 and 180 pounds, olive complexion, wear-ing a black ski mask.

* * * A 52-year-old West Els-don woman told police that three teens robbed her as she walked on a sidewalk near 56th and Kostner at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23. She said they pushed her to the ground,

punched and kicked her, stole her purse (contain-ing $20 cash, credit cards and IDs) and fled on foot. She refused medical at-tention and described them as Hispanic boys age 16-18, 5’6 to 5’11 and 140-170 pounds.

* * * A 36-year-old Clearing woman told police that she was robbed in the parking lot of Ford City Mall, 7601 S. Cicero, at 2:40 p.m. Jan. 4. She re-ported that she was shop-ping in Old Navy when a man who appeared to be concealing a weapon in his pocket ordered her and her two children (ages 5 and 7) outside. She complied and was robbed as she arrived at her van. Stolen were a computer tablet, a pair of earrings, and her purse (which contained $100 cash, a debit card and ID cards). She described the robber as a Hispanic man age 35-36, 5’6 and 200 pounds, brown eyes, light complexion. She did not report the crime until Thursday, Jan. 23, explaining that she was afraid and hesitant to come forward.Want to read more South-

State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago) reacted to the State of the State address by bringing attention to the state’s ap-pallingly high unemploy-ment rate. One year ago, Illinois had a 10.1 per-cent unemployment rate and today it is 8.6 per-cent. However, Sandoval states this number is still too high. The national av-erage is 6.5 percent and

the state of Illinois needs to focus on investing in jobs to get people back to work. The Senator is co-spon-soring Senate Bill 68 with Senator Kim Light-ford to convert Illinois’ minimum wage into a living wage of $10 an hour by 2016. Sandoval believes that people who are working a 40-hour workweek should be able

to provide food, shelter and child care for their family and $8.25 an hour simply isn’t enough. Sandoval argues the state’s economic devel-opment policy needs to get back to the basics of training Illinois residents to fill jobs rather than sending large tax breaks to a few large companies. “I agree with Speaker Madigan that we need to stop giving special tax breaks to corporations who continue to look to the General Assembly for handouts. Instead, we need to focus on the mom and pop small businesses that are the backbone of the Illinois economy,” said Sandoval. “The people of Illinois deserve action.

The barbecue chefs at Broil King have devel-oped this recipe for deli-cious grilled wings.Grilled Chicken Wings

with Roquefort DipServes 6-8 people

3 lbs. chicken wings, cleaned and trimmed Select wings of roughly equal size for evenness of cooking.

IngredientsMarinade:

1/3 cup vegetable oil1 clove garlic, minced1/4 teaspoon cayenne1 teaspoon chili powder1 teaspoon oregano1 teaspoon kosher salt2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

Blue Cheese Dip1/2 cup Mayonnaise1 clove garlic, minced1 tablespoon onion, grated

1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped1 tablespoon red wine vinegar1/3 cup blue cheese, crumbled

DirectionsPreheat the barbecue on high.Cut each wing at the joint to make two pieces, and discard wing tip if still attached. In a large re-sealable bag, whisk together vegetable oil, garlic, spices and vin-egar. Add chicken wings and toss to coat.If using rotisserie basket, spray or brush lightly with vegetable oil to prevent sticking. Place chicken wings on bottom of basket, cover with the top part, and fasten on tightest setting to secure the wings in place. Cook-

ing grids will need to be removed, and a drip pan placed beneath. If using rear rotisserie burner, set to high. If using lower burners, set to medium. Place the basket on spit and in the rotisserie and start the motor. Cook until golden brown and crisp, about 45 minutes to an hour.If cooking directly on well oiled cooking grids, turn heat to low, and cook, turning frequently until golden brown and crisp, 30 - 45 minutes. Use an instant-read ther-mometer to ensure that all wings are cooked through and ready to eat.Stir together all the dip ingredients. May be made ahead of time and chilled until ready to serve with chicken wings, celery and car-rots.More information on grilling and great reci-pe ideas is available at www.broilkingbbq.com.

Brian Church, 25, Jared Chase, 29, and Brent Betterly, 25, are charged with Providing Material Support for Ter-rorism, Conspiracy to Commit Terrorism, Pos-session of an Incendiary Device, and Solicitation to Commit Arson. According to charg-ing documents, the three

defendants made plans to destroy police cars and attack four Chicago Police district stations with destructive devices, and sought to undermine the police response to the conspirators’ other planned actions for the NATO Summit. Some of the proposed targets included the Campaign Headquarters of Presi-dent Obama, the home of Mayor Rahm Emanuel and certain downtown fi-nancial institutions. The Chicago Polar Plunge, one of the largest fundraising events for Special Olympics Chicago, will take place March 2nd on Chicago’s lakefront at North Avenue Beach from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This year’s Chicago Polar Plunge has even attracted the participation of the Mayor of the city of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, who is scheduled to attend and join in the plunging fun. Per federal changes ini-tiated by the Federal Mo-tor Carrier Safety Admin-istration (FMCSA), all CDL holders nationwide were given two years – beginning January 30, 2012, through January 30, 2014 – to declare whether they engage in interstate operation or intrastate operation. If interstate operation is declared, the CDL holder must provide the Secretary of State’s office a copy of their U.S. Department of Transportation medical card. This information is then submitted through the Commercial Driver’s License Information Sys-tem, which is accessible

by law enforcement na-tionwide. Beginning in February, the Secretary of State’s office is required to can-cel CDL privileges for those who have not com-plied with this federal regulation. White is en-couraging CDL holders who have not complied to do so by January 30. The Secretary of State’s office has made repeated efforts to make CDL holders aware of the federal re-quirements through both direct communication and various CDL industries. In October 2011, the office sent letters to ev-ery Illinois CDL holder informing drivers of their obligation to appear at a Secretary of State facility to declare and submit a medical certificate, if en-gaged in interstate driv-ing. Follow-up letters to those drivers who had not yet appeared were sent in September and December 2013. In addition, the Sec-retary of State’s office has engaged in substan-

tial outreach efforts to help ensure that all CDL holders are aware of their obligations and possible cancellation of their CDL privileges. These out-reach efforts included presentations at truck and trade shows, communica-tion with regional super-intendents of education (most school bus drivers hold CDLs), communi-cation with the 25 largest CDL trucking companies in Illinois, and direct communication to dozens of professional organiza-tions whose members in-clude CDL holders. CDL holders may find their nearest CDL facil-ity by visiting the Sec-retary of State’s website at: http://www.ilsos.gov/facilityfinder/facility. Further information can be found by visit-ing the link: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/depar tments /dr ivers /drivers_license/CDL/cdl.html#medical or by calling the Secretary of State’s CDL Medical Card Unit at 217-785-3002.

In preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation, St. Barbara seventh and eighth graders are doing a variety of service projects in addition to their min-istry and parish projects. On December 10, the students and their teachers trav-eled down to the Merchandise Mart to help Catholic Charities organize and pack Christmas bags for the needy fam-ilies served by the organization. It was a great way for the students to work for a cause that would make a difference in the lives of so many. The students enjoyed reading the biogra-phies of the families receiving the bags. It made them understand poverty in a real way and appreciate what they have in their own families. Pictured: St. Bar-bara students Jaclyn Mata, Billy Mur-rihy and Isabelle Garrity.

St. Symphorosa Church, located at 6135 S. Austin Avenue, is planning an Anointing of the Sick Mass and celebration in honor of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes - the feast celebrating Mary’s apparition to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France, which has since become a place of sol-ace and healing for those who are in distress and for those suffering ill-ness. Although the tradi-tional feast is celebrated on February 11th, the par-

ish celebration has been scheduled for Saturday, February 8th.

The celebration begins with a concert of Marian songs at 4:30 p.m. The concert will be followed by the 5 p.m. Mass which will include a sacramen-tal Anointing of the Sick. After Mass, all will be invited for a viewing of the classic movie, “Song of Bernadette” in the Ma-son Avenue School Hall. Sandwiches, salads & un-limited popcorn will be available.

A minimum $5.00 do-nation per person is being requested (payable at the door) to help cover the cost of food and drinks. So that the parish might have some idea of the amount of food to order for the evening, they ask that those planning to at-tend the “Movie Night” portion of the celebra-tion call the Parish Office (773-767-1523). Plan to join St. Symphorosa as they continue to gather as a family of faith around our Spiritual Mother.

Today, more than 2 million Americans ages 50 and over have age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is an eye disease that causes central vision to gradually deteriorate. According to the 2013 “Cost of Vision Problems: The Economic Burden of Vision Loss and Eye Disorders in the United States,” report, blindness and low vision annually costs more than $3.7 billion, with an annual per-person treatment cost of $6,680. Prevent Blindness, the nation’s old-est volunteer eye health and safety organization, has declared February as Age-related Macular Degenera-tion/Low Vision Awareness Month. As part of the ob-servance, the group offers educational materials at no cost through its dedicated web pages. This new online resource, http://lowvision.prevent-blindness.org, offers a wealth of information ranging

from an extensive list of searchable, local low vision resource directories to an informative blog with news for people living with age-related eye disease and significant visual impairment, authored by patient ad-vocate and low vision educator Dan Roberts, M.M.E. Making a commitment to maintaining a healthy life-style also helps to save sight. Prevent Blindness rec-ommends: Visit an eye doctor regularly, stop smok-ing, eat healthy foods, including foods rich in cer-tain antioxidants, stay active, control blood pressure, avoid eye injuries that may cause permanent damage by wearing eye protection during physical activities, and when outdoors, no matter what time of year, al-ways wear UV-blocking sunglasses and a hat. For further details, please call 800-331-2020 or visit preventblindness.org/amd.

Life... is like a box of chocolates - a cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that no one ever asks for, unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So, you're stuck with mostly undefin-able whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there's noth-ing else to eat while you're watching the game. Sure, once is a while you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee but it's gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. In the end, you are left with nothing but bro-ken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts, which, if you are desperate enough to eat, leaves nothing but an empty box of useless brown paper. ~The X-Files

Chicago motorists are often ticketed for failing to display their city sticker-even though they have pur-chased one. And the expensive ticket can often land a vehicle owner in front of an administrative hear-ing officer, unless they wish to pay the fine which can be $200 or higher. Recently, Alderman Edward M. Burke (14th) and Mary O’Connor (41st) offered a legislative solution to what is often considered an “unfair” ticket. The aldermen introduced an ordinance before the

Break proposed for motorists slapped with “unfair” city sticker tickets Chicago City Council that seeks to make it a valid de-fense to argue that such a ticket should be thrown out -- if the vehicle owner can prove that the city sticker was already purchased. “Simply put, this means that if you can show proof that a city sticker was actually purchased before the ticket was issued then the hearing officer would have to consider that fact as a valid defense,” Alderman Burke said. Alderman O’Connor said she came to Alderman

Burke and urged that a legislative solution be arrived at after one of her constituents, a Norwood Park se-nior, was fined $200 for not displaying a city sticker even though she had purchased one and it was on her windshield. The plight of Gladys Tamayo caught the attention of a local columnist and the matter was eventually dismissed. But not all Chicagoans are so lucky and the aldermen argue that it is time for the City Council to change the municipal code.

Gun Report

by Artie Cultew

Even if you’re not into guns, there’s still a good chance that you’ve at least heard of a few of the more popular brand names. Colt and Win-chester were the “guns that won the west” here in America and they’ve been around since the 1800s, along with Rem-ington, Smith & Wesson and others. Walther is a German company also dating back to the 1800s. Springfield Armory pro-duced guns for the U.S. military since the 1700s. Beretta, an Italian com-pany, dates back to the 1500s. All these compa-nies have a long and rich history and are still in business today. Then there’s the new kid on the block. An Austrian company named Glock that just popped onto the scene in 1982 and took the gun world by storm with their truly revolu-tionary designs that by now have been copied by virtually all other hand-gun manufacturers. Glock is probably one of the most popu-lar brands of guns in the world today. Approxi-mately 65% of police de-partments in the United States use Glock pistols, if that tells you anything. They also command a good percentage of sales in the civilian market. Prior to Glock’s sudden appearance, guns were made almost entirely of metal. Founder Gas-ton Glock had entered the firearms world with no previous experience in gun design or manu-

facturing but did have extensive knowledge of synthetic polymers – aka “plastic”. (Maybe he saw The Graduate and took the advice given to Ben Braddock.) Gun purists may laugh at the thought of guns be-ing made of plastic com-ponents but Glock is hav-ing the last laugh in this case – and we all know that “he who laughs last laughs best”. Polymer guns are lighter and less costly to manufacture than their metal counter-parts. Lighter may not mean much to you but ask any cop who has to schlep one around all day and he’ll probably agree that a lighter gun is a lot more comfortable to carry. Less costly to manufacture translates to lower cost to the buyer. Polymer guns still con-tain metal parts, such as the barrel and slide, so all the initial publicity and panic-peddling about bad guys sneaking them through metal detectors and into airplanes and courtrooms turned out to be nothing more than over-zealous anti-gun re-

portage aimed at peoples’ ignorance. As far as brand names go, Glock is to guns as Timex is to wristwatches. Please note that I said Ti-mex, not Rolex, though some diehard Glock fans would prefer to have you think otherwise. A far cry from being the crème de la crème, they neverthe-less have a well-deserved reputation for reliability and affordability. A lot of bang for the buck, as they say! Most gun owners I know are very opinion-ated about Glocks. They either totally love ’em or they absolutely hate ’em. Kinda like mushrooms on a pizza.

Food for ThoughtWe defend our president, governor, mayor, celeb-rities, etc. with guns. We defend our courts, sporting events, jewelry stores, banks, etc. with guns. We defend our children with a sign that reads “THIS IS A GUN FREE ZONE” – and then call someone with a gun if there’s an emergency.Keep those emails [email protected]

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Chicago and Northern Il-linois is alerting consum-ers about Hearthware, Inc. and its product the NuWave Oven, which is typically sold through infomercials. In the past three years, 1,291 com-plaints from consumers in all 50 states as well as 3 different provinces in Canada have been filed against this company with the BBB. There have been 331 complaints in the past 12 months, 18 from Illinois. A review of consumer complaints shows a pattern of allega-tions and complaints. Doreen Burton, a con-sumer from Forest Park, IL recently purchased a Hearthware product. “I called late at night after the commercial for the NuWave Oven. They sent a cooktop instead. I sent it back right away. They charged $121.18 for ship-ping and handling and would not refund those charges. They did not tell me how high this charge was going to be. I called

and complained and the person that I talked to said he would send me a copy of the tape where I agreed. I never got the tape and I never got a refund for shipping and handling.” “The single largest number of complaints al-lege that consumers were charged either for free products or in exorbitant shipping and processing fees associated with prod-ucts they thought were free,” explained Steve J. Bernas, president & CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. To help avoid problems with purchasing prod-ucts advertised through infomercials, the Better Business Bureau recom-mended consumers take these steps: Avoid be-coming caught up in an urgent sales pitch. Many times sellers use phrases like “for a limited time,” “order now before prices increase,” and “in short supply.” Take your time to consider the purchase. Research the company

and product. Go to bbb.org to obtain the Business Review on the company and check its BBB rating. Compare products and pricing. Search online to compare products and pricing from other man-ufacturers and sources. Read and understand the fine print. Make sure you understand purchase and return policies, restock-ing fees and exchange options. Review seller’s privacy policy. Will your name and other informa-tion be sold or used to solicit for other offers. Obtain a delivery time. Request purchase con-firmations and tracking numbers. Be suspicious if the business cannot sup-ply this information. Pay by credit card and retain receipts. This allows you to more easily dispute charges. The BBB also recom-mends buyers immediate-ly notify sellers if items are disappointing, dam-aged or do not arrive as anticipated. For more information, visit www.bbb.org

To help people get a jump on their taxes be-fore the Jan. 31 filing season opens, the Internal Revenue Service today announced the immediate availability of Free File brand-name software for most taxpayers.Fourteen commercial software companies that provide their Free File tax prep products at no cost began offering their prod-ucts today -- available only at IRS.gov/freefile. Although you can com-plete and e-file your tax return now, the Free File companies will hold it until Jan. 31 when the IRS begins accepting re-turns. As previously an-nounced, the IRS delayed the filing season due to critical system testing following the federal government closure. “Many tax preparers and tax software com-panies are now open for return preparation, in-cluding Free File. If you plan to get a head start on your taxes, remember to e-file. Electronic filing will allow software com-panies to hold your return and to automatically send it to the IRS on Jan. 31.

There is absolutely no advantage to filing by pa-per,” said IRS Commis-sioner John Koskinen. “If you want to save money and time, just use Free File to prepare and e-file your federal return at no charge.” As Jan. 31 approaches, Koskinen reminded tax-payers that IRS.gov has a range of information and services to help tax-payers prepare their tax returns. “Free File is just one of the many services available through IRS.gov to help people with their taxes,” Koskinen said. “Additional services include Where’s My Re-fund for timely updates on refunds, YouTube vid-eos with quick tax tips, and many other ways of getting information. We encourage taxpayers to explore IRS.gov as tax season approaches.”Free File, a public-private partnership, is the free way to do your federal tax returns either by using brand-name software or online fillable forms. Free File software is avail-able now to more than 100 million individuals and families that earn

$58,000 or less, which is 70 percent of taxpayers.Starting Jan. 31, Free File Fillable Forms will be available to accept tax returns for free e-filing from any taxpayer who is comfortable preparing their own tax return. Nearly 40 million tax-payers have used Free File since it debuted in 2003. These taxpayers have saved more than an estimated $1.2 billion by using Free File. Here’s how it works: At IRS.gov/freefile, select the “Free File Software” button. Each of the 14 Free File companies sets specific offers – generally based on income, state residency and age – to use their software. If your income is $58,000 or less, you will find at least one, if not more, offers avail-able to you. You can review each of the 14 company offers or use the IRS “Help Me Find Free File Software” tool to find an offer that matches your situation. Once you make your se-lection, you will be di-rected to the commercial provider’s website to be-gin preparing your return.
