WGSS Gator News for Grads Newsletter #13 Follow us @GatorFutures May 7, 2019 This will be our last Gator News for this school year. It has been a pleasure working with this year’s Grads of 2019! You are a considerate, kind, and encouraging group of students who have invested in others and impacted our community in positive ways. We are proud of you for what you have accomplished and excited to hear about your future plans! On behalf of the Counselling and Careers Department, we wish the graduates of 2019 the very best. Grad Reminders The Dry Grad ticket sale kick off is on Thursday, May 9 th in the Cafeteria at 1:30. Bring signed permission forms and $60. Dinner and Dance payment and guest passes must be submitted to the office by your table captain by May 17 th . Tickets are $75 each. Parents are welcome to attend. Did you get your extra ceremony tickets? Check at the office the week of May 13 th . Check your Grad Info Package for the times and dates to pick up your Grad ceremony tickets and cap and gown. Don’t forget your $50 V-Stole deposit! Any questions about Grad can be directed to Mrs. Sargeant in the office or [email protected] Grad Stage Narratives English 12 and Communications 12 teachers have asked their students to submit a 150 character quote to be read when the student crosses the stage at the Convocation Ceremony. The link for this is Grad Stage Narrative. The deadline to have this completed is May 15 th . This will be our last Gator News for this school year. It has been a pleasure working with this year’s Grads of 2019! You are a considerate, kind, and encouraging group of students who have invested in others and impacted our community in positive ways. UBC

UBC Offers of Admission for Sept 2019 Entry Admissions decisions are rolling out now and will continue into May. Click here for more details. Students must remember their offer is conditional and the terms are outlined in their letter of admission. The process and timeline of offers is as follows: 1. May - review and verify grades for students who

received first-round offers. Concerns, UBC will contact student directly.

Admitted to UBC - Now What? Next Steps Okanagan Campus Students can visit the Student Service Centre for assistance with next steps, such as course registration, course planning, and finances. Next Steps Vancouver Campus Students who have been admitted to the Vancouver campus and have accepted their offer will be assigned an Enrolment Services Advisor (ES Advisor) for the duration of their degree. ES Advisors help students navigate UBC, from making a budget or applying for loans to connecting with academic services and health resources. Students can expect an email from their ES Advisor starting May 8th. Click here for more details. Course Registration Dates Student will can find their personalized registration date and time by logging in to the SSC and selecting Registration or Course Schedule. Students will be sent an email approximately two weeks before winter registration opens. Students need to check and update their email address on the SSC to make sure they get this email.

Financial Planning, Student Loans and Bursaries Find out how much it's going to cost, how to apply for student loans and bursaries available for first year students here. Registration Deposit Referral Options Most students are required to pay a non-refundable deposit in the Student Service Centre when they accept their offer of admission to UBC. The acceptance deposit counts as your first registration deposit, and is applied to your tuition fees after you register for classes. There are some exceptions. If you’re receiving a major award or sponsorship funding – from UBC or a third party – and that funding is delayed, your registration deposit may be deferred until the rest of your tuition fees are due. If you’ve self-identified as an Aboriginal person of Canada, your registration deposit will be automatically deferred in an effort to support students who are being funded by third parties, including their band or Nation. Dalhousie University

KPU is offering a Turf Management Diploma. This is a two year full-time program that students also have the option to complete part-time. This program is transferable into several KPU degree programs. KPU Turf grads often work as Golf Superintendents or Sportsfield Managers. Math Upgrading equivalences A reminder to students upgrading math: MATU 0410 and MATU 0411 can be used as equivalence courses for Foundations 11 and Principles of Math 11 at Douglas College. For more information, please visit the Math Upgrading website. On Douglas’ Math Advising page, students can use the Math Course Pathway flow chart. It breaks down the sequencing of math courses based on what level a student may qualify for and what pre-requisites they might meet for the math subjects with the high school course and marks. ELLA Assessment The English Language Learning and Acquisition program, welcomes domestic and international students who wish to improve their English for academic study. The APEG Foundation offers several entry scholarships to BC high school graduates entering engineering or earth science programs at UBC, UVic, SFU, BCIT and UNBC. The entry scholarships are awarded on the basis of a combination of factors, including academic standing, extracurricular activities, financial need and a student statement

Up to $700 each (x2) CRITERIA: 1. Have experienced a significant mental

health or substance use problem and are accessing treatment and support

2. Can demonstrate financial need 3. Under the age of 20 at the time you apply 4. Have lived in BC for at least a year from the

date of application 5. Will be enrolled in first year studies at a

recognized BC University, college or technical school by January 1, 2020

Up to $10,000 ($1,000 - $2,000 scholarships)

Scholarships are available to dependents of personnel of BCEA member companies in good standing, up to a maximum of two scholarships per member company

The employee of the BCEA member company must live and work in BC

Students must be attending or planning to attend a post-secondary educational institute full time

Applicants applying for a BCEA scholarship and pursuing a career in the electrical or electrical engineering field will also qualify for the $1,000 Tommy Haddock Scholarship

The BCEA members have raised funds this year to award $500 - $1,000 bursaries

Bursaries are available to grade 12 and post-secondary students pursuing a career in: o Electrical (including apprentices) o Marketing o Electrical Engineering o Business

Bursaries will be awarded to the students who will be attending a post-secondary school in September in BC (Apprentices must be returning back to school in the next school year)

Bursaries will be paid directly to the post-secondary school for your tuition

Douglas Academic Foundations for Child

and Youth Care Information Sessions

When: May 28th Time: 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm Where: Douglas College, Coquitlam Campus The Academic Foundations for Child and Youth Care is accepting applications for Fall 2019. This is a new program and it’s designed for students who wish to apply for the Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care, but will not be 19 years of age by November 1st of their first year. It includes three-program required courses and electives, allowing them to apply for entrance into the degree in their second year and earning them a certificate. If you are interested in, please attend an information session. Young Engineers and Scientists (YES)

The YES Fellowship program is open to graduating secondary students in BC entering their first year at a university or college. The fellowship offers a 6-week summer research experience and a $3,000 award, plus travel and housing allowances for students from outside Metro Vancouver. Students will be placed with research groups at TRIUMF or ones associated with Life Sciences BC.

Student Transcript Service

Student Information Post-Secondary Selections Students can access the StudentTranscripts Service at: www.studenttranscripts.gov.bc.ca/. Students must create a Basic BCeID account to access their information. Students need only complete their PSI selections once in the current school year. Students may add to their selections at any time up through July 12, 2019. Students may make up to 25 selections free of charge within six months after completing their last course. After six months, students will be charged $10 per transcript, payable on the StudentTranscripts Service. Distribution of Transcripts Distribution of transcripts occurs through a variety of mechanisms. For PSIs with the new XML data transfer capability (see below), transcripts will be sent throughout the year. For PSIs on the electronic batch process, interim transcript information will be sent in early May, and final year-end transcript information distributed in late July.

XML Transcript Information

PSI Student Selection Deadline: Any time year round This transcript distribution method is currently only available for students selecting the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island University and Thompson River University.

When authorized in the StudentTranscript Service by the student: The Ministry sends transcript information at any time of the year when students have selected “Send my

transcript now and allow this Post Secondary Institution to request transcript updates until the date specified

The PSI immediately receives interim transcript delivery and is able to request updates to interim marks and final marks as required

PSIs will then have 12 months after authorization to request updated transcripts

Batch Process Transcript Information

PSI Student Selection Deadline: May 3, 2019 for Interim marks and July 12 for Final Transcripts This transcript distribution method is currently available with participating BC PSIs, University of Alberta, University of Calgary and the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC). When authorized in the StudentTranscript Service by the student:

The Ministry sends transcript information when students have selected “Send Interim and Final Marks when they become available”

The PSI receives interim batch transcript on May 6, 2019 For final transcripts, the PSI selection deadline for students in the StudentTranscript Service is July 12,

2019; the Ministry sends final transcript information to all students’ selected PSIs in late July 2019 Other Transcript Distribution Processes

Some PSIs only accept hard copy transcripts and, as such, final transcript information will be sent by the Ministry in late July.
