From the Principal’s Office I take this opportunity in the College calendar year to wish all our Year 12 students success in their studies, either through completion of moderated work,
exam results or combinations of both. At the recent “Year 12 Farewell Breakfast” held at The Cruising Yacht Club I and many other staff had the privilege to relax and dine with these very special young adults prior to their Farewell Assembly held back at the college. I say special young adults because they all present outstanding qualities that our college feels proud to have in some way developed over the years. They also display our values: RESPECT, HONESTY, TRUST, RESPONSIBILITY AND FRIENDSHIP that we hold dearly at Ocean View College. The Year 12 Farewell Assembly is a very traditional ceremony that celebrates the journey that our students have travelled, their accomplishments and their standing as the most senior students at our College. In particular, I always enjoy our Reception and Year 1 students, in this case, The Classes of 2025 and 2024, giving personalised hand made cards to our Year 12 students, The class of 2012. Congratulations to all the nominees and award winners for the Leadership Awards: YEAR 10 LEADERSHIP AWARD Nominees ‐ Caleb Sweeting, Nikki Lehmann and Tahlia George Award Winner ‐ Tahlia George YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP AWARD Nominees ‐ Georgina Davis, Peter Bray and Kaitlyn Underdown Award Winner ‐Kaitlyn Underdown YEAR 12 LEADERSHIP AWARD Nominees ‐ Jessica Dangerfield, Jade Hastings and Sam Smith Award Winner ‐ Jade Hastings
I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding speeches made by our Year 11 representative, Kaitlyn Underdown, farewelling our Year 12 students and Jess Dangerfield, our Year 12 representative, responding
on behalf of all Year 12 students. To all teaching and non‐teaching staff at the college I say congratulations on the many hours of hard work to produce the outstanding citizens from the Class of 2012. I look forward to the upcoming Year 12 Graduation Ceremony, also to be held at The Cruising Yacht Club.

Children's Centre News With the warmer weather we are experiencing at the moment, we are taking full advantage of having outside activities. The children so enjoy spending time outdoor equipment. The children have started on their Christmas craft and are enjoying doing
the colourful paintings and the glitter drawings. The rooms will soon start to look really bright when we start hanging the drawings on the wall. Please remember the policy regarding clothing during warmer weather. The children need to wear tops with a short sleeve and shoes with a strap. Please remember no singlets to be worn, otherwise the children will not be able to engage in outside play.

Junior School News Last Sunday was Remembrance Day. Thank you to the parents, staff and students who supported Remembrance Day by buying a Red Poppy from the
main office. The money raised will support the Returned Services Leagues. This week Junior School students were involved in the Footsteps Dance program. Footsteps will continue in Weeks 7 to 10. Earlier in the year I applied for a grant through ArtSmart and approval of this grant has enabled Junior School students to be involved free of charge. On behalf of the Junior School students, staff would like to thank Sharyn Schell at ArtSmart for supporting our funding application and assisting with the approval of the grant. Tomorrow, Friday 16th November is Pupil Free Day. Junior School staff will be involved in Training and Development focusing on the Australian National Curriculum and OVC Site Improvement Plan goals for 2013. This year Junior School staff have focused on restructuring Reception to Year 5 Term 4 reports. In Term 4 students will be assessed against the Australian National Curriculum standards in Mathematics and Science. The other six areas of learning will be assessed against SACSA, the current assessment and reporting guidelines. Each year students will be assessed against the Australian National Curriculum standards in two additional learning areas. By the end of 2015 students will be assessed against the National curriculum in all eight learning areas. A few weeks ago I circulated some surveys to parents regarding my role as Head of Junior School. Thank you to the parents/caregivers who completed surveys and returned them to school. I will use the feedback in these surveys to assist me for effective planning in 2013.
In Weeks 7, 8 and 9 the Preschool students beginning school in Term 1 next year will be involved in transition visits at the Junior School. Welcome to Isabella, Jamie, Lucas, Cohen, Caitlin, Joshua, James, Anastacia, Angelo and Celina. Transition visits will take place in the Reception/Year 1 classes. Please help these students and their families feel welcome to Ocean View College by greeting them when you see them. On Wednesday 5th December (Week 9) Junior School students will be participating in the annual end of year excursion to the Adelaide Aquatics Centre. Students will travel to and from the centre by private bus. The cost to students will be $10.00 (GST inc). Information about the excursion was sent home earlier this week. On Sunday 4th November Year 5 students Deryk, Darnell and Jack were involved in the 2012 National Skid Kids titles. All three boys did very well winning many of their races. Jack was exceptional winning every race by a full corner, finally coming first in Division 5. Jack scored a massive trophy, a top and a hat for coming first. Congratulations Jack, well done! We have been notified of a case of Chicken Pox in the Junior School. Please be aware and watch for symptoms in your children. Thank you.
Nola Tsoulakis ‐Head of Junior School Middle School News Thank you to all of the Year 6‐9 students who braved the wind and sand and cold seas to participate enthusiastically in the
Middle School Beach Carnival. The PE staff did a wonderful job setting up the facilities at the Largs Bay Sailing Club and apart from the weather it was a great day. So many of you dressed colourfully and engaged in the activities ‐ I was very proud of all of you as I huddled under my towel. Congratulations to all who went in the Iron Man and Iron Woman competitions. We will be having an assembly next week to present the medals. Last week all Year 6‐9 staff completed Interim Reports. Some
families may have received a letter home saying that some subject staff are concerned about their child’s progress half way through this term. If you did receive a letter please give us a call or come and see us so we can work together to improve your child’s results.
Last week I attended the Music Extravaganza and it was great to see all of the very talented Music students performing in front of family and friends. This Saturday the Year 6/7 students are participating in the Port Parade. Several of them have been working with Bob and Kalayna from the Port Adelaide Enfield Council on a float and will be walking in the Parade. Congratulations to all involved.

Senior School News The Year 12s started last Friday at the Cruising Yacht Club for a delicious buffet breakfast at 7am before attending school for our Farewell
Assembly in the Gym. The Reception and Year 1 classes had spent time preparing a memento to give to the outgoing Year 12s, which the Year 12s accepted with a handshake. Our guest speaker this year was Squadron Leader Ronald MacGillivray from the Edinburgh RAAF base. He talked about the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership Award before
presenting our award winners with a certificate, cheque and an Anzac medal. The nominees for the Year 10 award included Caleb Sweeting and Nikki Lehman. Tahlia George was the winner. Peter Bray and Georgina Davis were nominated in Year 11 while Kaitlyn Underdown was awarded the certificate. The Year 12 Leadership award went to Jade Hastings. Sam
Smith and Jessica Dangerfield were well deserving nominees. Kaitlyn Underdown spoke eloquently on behalf of the Year
11s and Jess Dangerfield responded in turn. The Year 12s were presented by their Care Group teachers and then assembled on the oval for some final Year 12 photos.
The Year 12s will gather one more time for the Graduation Ceremony at the Cruising Yacht Club on 22nd November at 7pm.
Year 11s will attend a Transition Day on Friday of next week where they will have a short introduction to their new Year 12 subjects and meet their teachers and classmates from
LeFevre High School if they have chosen shared subjects. The following Monday will see the start of exams for both Year 10 and 11 students. Year 10 and 11 teachers compiled Interim Reports last week. Students of concern will have a letter sent home asking for you to contact teachers to discuss their progress.
Larah Stieg ‐ Head of Senior School Health and Well Being Year 5/6 Transition The students involved in the activities are really enjoying the opportunity to
mix with each other, and meet the Middle School staff and learn all about the expectations of life in the Middle School. After their fourth session, the Year 5s will have their Passports to complete and they will be involved in a “forum” where the Year 5s will be given the opportunity to ask questions of our Year 6 students. During the sessions we are stressing the importance of recognising that all feelings about transition are valid ‐ some feel excited; others nervous; many have mixed emotions about leaving a safe, familiar environment. Please remember to encourage your child to talk about their feelings and support them during this time. Junior School Idol If I hear another One Direction song, I’ll go crazy!! Junior School students have been working really hard to ensure they are fully prepared for this exciting event! Mark the date on your calendar: Week 9, Monday 3rd December at 2.00pm in the Flexible Learning Centre. It will be a bit squashy, but lots of fun! Best Buddies Congratulations to the wonderful students who have worked so hard to help our new Receptions adjust to life at Ocean View. It’s beautiful to see them working together ‐ supporting, encouraging and having lots of fun. Our three new best buddies have done an outstanding job: Well done James, Gemma and Tanisha. This program has been so successful that it will continue next year ‐ I’ve already had many
students asking how they can get the “Best Buddies” jobs next year!! Peer Mediators This week is our final time working in the Junior School and Children’s Centre. The Year 10 Peer Mediators are feeling very sad that they will no longer have set times to work with these younger students but many will continue on a voluntary basis next year. They have been exceptional Peer Mediators and I’m sure many will pursue careers in the teaching or child care fields. Bullying Surveys Students in Years 3 to 11 have recently completed our second major Bullying Survey for the year. I’m currently analysing the results and will publish them in the next newsletter. Our target is to have a 10% reduction, with many programs and strategies put in place to work towards this goal. Team Pick Up These wonderful students are continuing their great work and as a way of saying “Thank You” the College will be paying for the team leaders to go bowling and have lunch together during the last week of term. There will also be a pizza lunch provided for all the students who have been regularly giving up their time to keep our College grounds looking clean. Parent Group Remember, we still meet every Monday in the Hub at 9.00am. We’d love to see some new faces!! Leah McGlinchey ‐ Health and Well Being Coordinator

Safe Social Learning Program comes to Ocean View College Junior School Skoodle is a new computer program our JM5/Year 5 class has been involved in this year. The program is for ages 7 to 14 and
will prepare students for safe use of social media programs such as Facebook if they are permitted to participate in this later in their life. Skoodle was previously called Super Clubs Plus. This
program has been a valuable learning tool for the students in many ways. The Skoodle program teaches the students over 80% of the ICT skills that are required for successful participation and learning at school. Students have learned how to create their own home pages, upload images, learnt about copyright, BB codes and how to set up links to other pages. Students have also had to read many instructions, comprehend these and
follow them. Skoodle teaches the students about safe use of on line social media, they can chat
to their friends and pen friends via e‐mail or in chat rooms or have group conversations all in a safe learning environment. Skoodle is monitored and any unsafe use can result in red or yellow cards being given and their work or chat removed from the site. Through Skoodle students have learned that if they wouldn’t say something to their parents, Nanna or teacher face to face then they shouldn’t say it on line. Everyone is polite, helpful and caring on Skoodle. The ability to create home pages and clubs around students’ interests is offered by Skoodle. Some students have, for example, really enjoyed creating ‘One Direction’ pages. They have also added music, links, BB codes, friendship webs and special effects including games. In conclusion the program Skoodle has been extremely worthwhile and it has certainly added to the College program and student social connections. The students in JM5 have supported each other in moving through the program, developed a real sense of camaraderie, included everyone, especially the shyer students and worked together for the common good of all. Confidence in friendships and class identity has continued to grow through this program. A big thank you to Ms Bath for helping our class be part of the new learning initiative. It is hoped next year that more teachers take up this opportunity as… “Safe behavior online keeps us all safe and happy”.

Drama News Firstly, congratulations to the Year 11 Drama students who performed their Monologues in Week 4 of this term in a show titled “CONFRONTED”. The performances were outstanding and they certainly ‘confronted’ the audiences who attended and discussed the pieces at length at
the conclusion of each evening. Well done to all involved ‐ it was definitely a memorable show! Now the action in the Drama department doesn’t stop there though as we still have two more productions to round out the year. So make sure you come in and see our talented thespians in action and in return we promise to entertain and educate. This next show is the Year 10 Group Production “PRESSURE” which will be performed in Week 6. It is a play about the pressures and stresses faced by High School students, parents and teachers. Some of these pressures are external, some come from within and others are caused by peers and society expectations. It is a challenging piece that explores the MOB mentality and conforming as well as looking at the need for support no matter who you are and how okay you look on the outside. When the pressure builds up inside we all need someone to turn to and understand and maybe, just maybe, help to take the pressure down. This will be performed on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th November at 7:30pm each evening in the OVC Drama Room. Tickets are $5.00 (GST free) per person and can be purchased at the door. Then to complete the year Jacky Smith’s second semester Year 9 class are performing their Group Production “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”, a comic take on the classic Shakespearian play. This will be presented to invited Primary and High School audiences throughout the day on Thursday 29th November. Please keep your eye on this space for more details about each show and what is happening in Drama.
We hope to see you our audience soon!

Music News Thank you to all our students, families and friends who braved the horrendous weather conditions last Monday evening to attend our end of year Music Extravaganza. I’m sure you will agree that we have many talented Musicians here at OVC. Thank you also to the many staff who attended and helped at the show ‐ your support was truly appreciated by all. Also it would be remiss of me to not thank the dedication and many hours of patience put in by our dedicated DECD and Private Provider Instrumental/ Vocal Music staff.
Just a quick note to remind you all that our Year 9 ‐ 11 Music students will undergo their final solo and ensemble assessments throughout Week 7. Recently a group of our Year 9‐11 Music students and parents attended the Greater Union Cinema’s Halloween screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It was a great night ‐ lots of singing and dancing in the seats was had by all. Thank you to everyone who attended and dressed for the occasion. Our Choir Pizza Party is on again this year on 23rd November 12 at noon in the Music Room. Certificates of participation and awards will be given out to our members. Once again our final performance evening “THE WORKS” will be held on Sunday 2nd December at the Cougars Rugby Club, Port Adelaide. All our Bands will be performing ‐ please check out the flyer for more details. Thank you to those who returned the 2013 IMS enrolment forms. I will be starting to hold auditions for some of the most popular instruments soon so please remind your students to listen up for notices in the morning bulletins.

Sailing News Many thanks to the team of volunteers who assisted at the CYCSA Opening Day. We had 16 students and 15 parents attend during the day. Our team worked on the gates, collected trolleys, acted as guides and general helpers. The CYCSA was very impressed with the job we did and have given us a $2,000 donation toward our Sailing program. Thanks particularly to the Poulish and Miller families who took on a major role. Our Sailing teams competed in the first regatta for the season on Sunday 11th November. Stingrays won four of their five races finishing in second place. Our other two teams, Sharks and Dolphins, each won three of their five races which was also a creditable performance. Most notable is the improvement in our skill levels. Obviously the extra training is paying off. Well done to the students who are putting in the time and to Greta and Danielle Derrick who are coaching for us.
