    Principal’s Message

    Dear Parents and Carers

Thank you to our wonderful students, staff and parents for your understanding, patience and cooperation to help us get through the unexpected and often changing circumstances in 2020. We all did it together and that’s what this great community is about. Well done everyone!

I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas, a well-deserved rest and I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed, and ready for what promises to be another exciting year at Rostrata in 2021.

    Twilight Tunes

Congratulations to all of the students who performed in our three bands last night during the Twilight Tunes concerts. They were magnificent and showcased the quality of the band programs at Rostrata. Congratulations also to Mrs De Hoog and the tutors for their hard work over the year – it was definitely evident throughout the evening.

Thank you also to parents for your cooperation and understanding as we made changes in order to stage the concerts within the Covid rules, for venues such as our assembly area.

    Year 6 Graduation

Tonight we have the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony in the Performing Arts Centre at Willetton SHS. This is a ticketed event and there is a strict limit of two guest seats per graduating student. As you arrive, please scan the Safe WA QR Code, then make your way with your Year 6 child to their class teacher to be checked in and then make your way to the seating.

We are looking forward to celebrating with our graduates.

    Graduation Dinner Dance

The Graduation Dinner Dance will be held tomorrow night at the Amherst Village Centre in Southern River, commencing at 6:30pm and concluding at 9:00pm. Thank you to the Graduation Committee for organising the event, Humphrey’s Dance studio for providing the dance sport lessons this term and organising the music and dancing throughout tomorrow evening.

We ask that parents collect their children from the venue at 9:00pm.

    Class Lists for 2021

Class lists for 2021 will be posted outside the staffroom windows on Friday, 29 January at 1:00pm. Teachers have dedicated a considerable amount of time in creating these classes and ensuring that each child’s needs have been considered. We have structured the school so that there is good capacity to absorb any new enrolments that we might receive in the week before school reopens.

    Covid-19 Plans

The WA Government has extended the funding for two onsite cleaners during the day to ensure that hard surfaces are cleaned regularly into Term 1. We are still operating in stage 4 rules and this means that the safe practices we have in place will continue into 2021.

iPad Information Meeting for Year 1 Parents

Thank you to the Year 1 parents who attended the iPad information session on Tuesday this week. Staff were able to show parents how effectively students will be using their own iPads to enhance their learning at school. As parents saw, the use of Apple Classroom is a very strong feature for classroom and student management and one of the key reasons behind having students on the same, single device.

Parents can purchase iPads through the portal on the school’s website. This is through Winthrop Technology and we are assured that it is an extremely competitive price. However, as there has been a high demand, you might wish to check the delivery time before committing, as other suppliers may have more stock.

    Late Arrivals to School

Students who arrive late in the mornings are asked to check in at the front office. It would be easier for them if they were dropped off outside the entry gates on Rostrata Avenue. Thank you.

    KITCHEN NEWS

What an amazing year we have had in the kitchen. The garden has produced wonderful harvests including our new Kohlrabi that was a delicious addition to our coleslaw. The last 2 weeks have been about bread making. Students watched yeast go through a chemical reaction giving off carbon dioxide a process called proofing and one which makes the bread rise. They kneaded the dough and made amazing looking bread pretzels.

    GARDEN NEWS

Garden News The garden is looking very bright and colourful thanks to the collaboration with Miss De Paoli and some of her art classes. Students have been busy painting the garden beds with bright colours for the last two weeks. We have stared the construction of shade over the garden beds for the Summer months to keep vegetables from burning. The chicks from the science lab have been visiting the garden to spend time outside. They are growing very fast and students have had the chance to watch their development this term.

    CULTURAL RESPONSIVENESS

Cultural Responsiveness at Rostrata Primary Throughout the Western Australian Curriculum students develop intercultural understandings as they learn to value their own cultures, languages and beliefs, and those of others.

Learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures allows students to develop respect for diversity and understanding of cultural difference. It also provides all students with a rich and well-rounded knowledge of Australia's history.

The Six Seasons - Nyungar Life on the Coastal Plain The Nyungar year is divided into six seasons as can be seen in the calendar wheel. The seasons are not defined by strict dates, but by changes in temperature, wind, rain and food availability.

The Nyungar were not seafaring people, but used all the resources of the coast, the coastal plains and waterways, and the scarp. In the warmer months they gathered and hunted plants and animals from the coast and coastal lakes and waterways. In the colder months they retreated from the coast to the hills for shelter.

Birak- The First Summer/ Season of the Young

Birak season sees the rains ease up and the warm weather really start to take hold. The afternoons are cooled by the sea breezes that abound from the southwest. This was the fire season, a time to burn the country in mosaic patterns.

An almost clockwork style of easterly winds in the morning and sea breezes in the afternoon, meant that traditionally this was the burning time of year for the Nyoongar people.

They would burn the country in mosaic patterns for several reasons including fuel reduction, increasing the grazing pastures for some animals, to aid in seed germination for some plants and for ease of mobility across the country.

As for the animals, there are many fledglings now venturing out of nests, though some are still staying close to their parents. Reptiles are looking to shed their old skin for a new one.

With the rising temperatures and the decreasing rainfall, it's also time for the baby frogs to complete their transformation into adulthood.

    CHAPLAIN NEWS

Kids Helpline is Australia’s only free (even from a mobile), confidential 24/7 online and phone counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25. When you call us, you’ll hear a recorded message that explains a bit about us and how Kids Helpline works. After this message you’ll be connected with a counsellor who’ll start the conversation. The counsellor might ask what you’d like to talk about and follow up with some questions about the problem or situation so they can start to understand what’s happening for you.

You can talk about anything! Maybe something has happened at home or school and you’re not sure what to do about it. You might be feeling sad, scared, angry, lonely, or just want to talk to somebody who understands. Young people contact us about all kinds of things including friendships and relationships, family issues, bullying and cyberbullying, school and study stress, gender identity, sexuality, mental health, feeling sad or upset, body issues, or because they’re feeling unsafe.

When logging into WebChat (it’s like WhatsApp) you’ll be asked a few questions. This information helps the counsellor understand how best to help you. You’ll then go into our queue where you might wait a while, depending on how busy it is (sometimes in the evenings this can be up to 40 - 50 minutes). You’ll then be connected to one of our counsellors who’ll look over your responses and begin the counselling session.

All Kids Helpline counsellors have tertiary qualifications in a counselling related field. You can talk to the same counsellor again, if you remember to make a note of their name.

Kids Helpline won’t tell anybody what you say to us and our conversations are private. EXCEPT The only time we might need to tell somebody is if you or someone else are in a life-threatening situation or are in danger of being significantly harmed. In times like this we have a responsibility to protect you from harm.

    ROSTRATA P & C NEWS

Thank you from the P&C President

I would just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped our school community throughout the year; especially all P&C members and school staff. We couldn’t be the school we are without all the support we get from parents, students, and staff, and we are very lucky to have such a great school community. This has been especially true this year, with many challenges faced, lots of additional work for our staff and many others in our community, as well as lots of uncertainty.

All the best to those families departing Rostrata this year – hopefully the transition to new schools next year goes smoothly for you – thank you for being part of the Rostrata Community and I hope you have enjoyed your time here.

I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season and look forward to seeing you all back at school in 2021.

    Cheers,
