Principal Class Report Carpe Diem — Seize the Day

The Roman poet Horace is known for the Latin phrase Carpe Diem – this phrase is close to our hearts and minds as we work collaboratively to ensure the very best learning and wellbeing results for every child at the College. The ability of all students, families, staff and community to Sieze the Day and work towards their very best self in regards to respectful interactions, effort, growth and learning results continues to build great pride, confidence and success at the College. In 2019, learning and academic rigour have remained at the centre of all we do as a college community. We are all about providing the very best educational opportunities for every student at the college. The framework we use for improving student outcomes (FISO) uses the latest research on student learning and global best practice to assist us to focus our efforts on key areas that are known to make the biggest difference. The state targets for excellence around the important areas of teaching and learning, professional leadership, community involvement in learning and the creation of a positive school culture underpin every decision and event at the college. A positive school culture is what we develop collaboratively – the saying, It takes a Village to raise a child is so true. The School Wide Positive Behaviour Team ensures that all students are explicitly taught through their learning programs the skills, behaviours and attitudes that underpin making wise choices around behaviour. Following the School Wide Positive Behaviour Framework we have a school wide positive pathways which sees children rewarded for positive choices. We also have an agreed process for students who do not make wise choices. These steps are consistent with the Department of Education guidelines and are consistent. The college’s purpose statement, motto and values are at the centre all decisions.

We are collaborative and inclusive of all. We deliver a 21st century guaranteed and viable curriculum that results in outstanding student achievement.

College Motto

A sincere thank you to our wonderful school community for your ongoing commitment to our continual Improvement agenda by encouraging, supporting and pushing your children with their learning. In 2019, we have base line learning data for every student and for the majority of students learning growth over the years. We celebrate the students’ achievements. We note the next important learning steps for each child and this is our focus into 2020. We remind all of the absolute importance of being at school every day on time. To learn at the required rate and beyond, students must be at school. School starting time being 8.35am. To those families and students with high attendance, our congratulations. For those families and students with lower attendance rates this must be a priority focus for the family in 2020. Family holidays should be taken during school holiday time. Students who are not at school generally show reduced learning growth and this is an area of great concern. Attendance will need to be a continued area of focus in 2020. Our school academic results continue to be positive. The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an important indicator of achievement and growth. The NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3,5, 7,and 9 takes place in May of each year and is an important requirement. In Term 4 of 2019 the families of the children doing NAPLAN in 2020 attended an information session as they continue to support their child’s learning. The College website also has additional materials to support the learning process. In 2020, a school focus on the teaching and learning of numeracy will complement the solid processes we have established around reading, with 21st century skills such as critical and creative thinking underpinning this work. It is crucial that all students keep reading and doing Mathletics over the summer break. In Australia we often find that children’s learning can slip back over the break unless families keep their children reading, writing and doing some number work. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to School Council. The council under the guidance of School Council President; Mrs Jagruti Dave provide a really strong governance model for the college. The council supports and promotes the college in a very positive manner across the community. Farewell to our departing staff and thank you for your contribution to the college. As Principal I would like to take this opportunity to thank my amazing staff who work diligently with every student to get the best possible results. A special mention to the School Improvement Team; consisting of Ms O’Brien, Mr Pugh, Ms Dalton, Ms Foster, Ms Sujith, Ms Ryan, Ms Toqeer, Ms McNaughton, Ms Hodgson, Mr Robertson, Ms Farrugia, Ms Mussara, Ms O’Callaghan, Ms Blackman, Helen Salmond and Kerry Kun. To our office team; Helen, Clare, Lisa, Sharon, Kate, Kathy, Emily and Jade who are always so helpful, we appreciate it. On behalf of the College I would like to wish every member of our school community a wonderful festive season and a happy and healthy 2020. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. Kind regards, Jenny Crowle Principal

New Mobile Phone Policy for 2020

Dear Truganina College community,

As you may be aware, the Victorian Government has announced a new mobile phone policy that will require students to switch their phones off and securely store them away during the day.

The policy is designed to support a teaching and learning environment that is free from unnecessary distractions, disruptions and student inattention caused by the urge to check their phones.

Though it is preferable that students don’t bring a mobile phone to school. Students who do will need to comply with our College Mobile Phone Policy.

From Wednesday 29th January, 2020, all students who bring a mobile phone to school will be supplied with a registered Yondr pouch. With this pouch, students can secure their device to prevent them from accessing it throughout the day, supporting both their academic and social growth. Locations that lock and unlock their Yondr pouch, will be accessible at College entry and exit points. All students will be supported with training to ensure they understand how to activate and deactivate their pouch at the start of Term 1, 2020.

As always, communication with students can be gained through our administration phone number 9368 9800. We will also make available additional Yondr pouches to be purchased if your child happens to lose or damage it before the conclusion of their time at Truganina College. For more information regarding Yondr, please visit their website via https://www.overyondr.com/schools

In advance we would like to thank you for supporting our students having a phone-free learning environment. If required a copy of our College Mobile Phone Policy can be provided upon request or alternatively accessed via our College website. Please refer to the Department of Education and Training website for further information on students using mobile phones policy and the personal goods policy.

Regards,

Christopher Pugh

Middle Years Assistant Principal.

Are you interested in learning some simple strategies to support your child’s learning at home?

Would you like to work with small groups of students in classrooms to develop their literacy skills?

Are you happy to donate your time and have (or are willing to acquire) a Working with Children’s Check?

The Community Engagement in Learning Team will be running a Parent Engagement in Learning Course early in Term 1 in 2020. This is an opportunity for you to develop some skills that you can use at home with your child to support their reading. You will be asked to donate your time to work in classrooms with small groups of students to support their reading skills.

All you need is a WWCC card which you can apply for a free volunteer check and card here:

http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/applications/apply+for+a+check/

Be on the lookout for more information in 2020 – we can’t wait to work with you!

Congratulations!!

Congratulations Disha (2G) for being the Australian Year 2 winner of the Oxford Children’s word of the Year competition. Disha chose the word Adaptability and used her high level understanding of language to write from her heart. You can read her winning entry below.

Disha P.

Truganina P-9 College (VIC) Word: Adaptability I think the word adaptability is important in life because I have adapted to a lot of places. I was born in Singapore and was there till I was 3 years old. I went to 3 year old kinder and made lots of friends. I even did my very first stage show. Then one day my parents said “we are moving to India”. I was very sad because I missed my friends. When we moved to India there was massive floods and our house was flooded. We temporarily moved to my friend’s house. We suffered a lot because my sister had ear infection, there was power outage for many days and we had very less groceries. I noticed how people were suffering. After that we moved to Sydney and I went to 4 year old kinder. I met my dad after a few months. I enjoyed the new place, new friends. When my parents said we are moving to Melbourne. But this time I was happy and ready because I knew change is always good. I learnt to adapt to new people, places and things. Maths at Home Maths is an essential part of any child’s life and making maths fun at home is not as hard as you think! It can be easier for children to understand maths concepts when they relate it to something real and see it as part of everyday life. Here are some ideas of how you can incorporate maths outside of school:

Explore the Everyday maths In the outdoors When walking, talking, looking and listening, you can explore and use mathematics every day. Introduce children to maths in the outdoors by counting steps, finding numbers and shapes and mapping your path. Around the house You can use a range of household objects to explore and discover numbers, measurement, patterns and shapes. Discover new ways of creating learning opportunities without leaving your home. Try cooking together with your children, have them weigh or calculate the total number of ingredients. At the supermarket Shopping is a regular activity that can help children explore mathematical ideas that are both simple and complex. Young learners can help to find items on the shopping list, look for interesting shapes or numbers, or talk about the size or weight of things. Try using the scales to measure fruits and vegetables or go discount shopping! What can you buy to make the most out of your money?

Foundation-Year 2 Playground Design

Foundation to Year 2 students have been busy writing persuasive letters to their Assistant Principal to provide their voice in the development of a new playground. This playground has been designated to sit behind the portables at the top end of the F-2 playground. This will mean in 2020 there will be two play-grounds in the F-2 area.

Please see the options below and the amazing letters from a selection of our Foundation to Year 2 classes. The next step will be the Principal team reviewing all of the student voice letters and making a decision on the best playground for our students.

Lisa Foster Year 1-2 Assistant Principal - Student Engagement, Wellbeing and Agency

Dear Miss Foster,

Did you know that a monkey is so strong that they can hold onto a tree with just one arm? Do you think with lots of practice on playground number 3, we could become as strong as monkeys? We could hold onto the monkey bars with just one arm!

Playground number 3 also has a spider web to activate our spider senses. In Charlotte’s web, Charlotte uses all of her eight legs to move about and make her web.

We certainly don’t have eight legs but would need to activate our spider sense to move across the spider’s web on playground number 3. Playground number 3 also seeks to build our rock climbing and abseiling skills with the walls made for climbing. The will increase our confidence in tackling heights!

We hope you consider playground number 3. It stands to build our skill and strength preparing us for anything!

Junior Athletics Carnival On Tuesday the 26th of November we had our students from Years Foundation, 1, 2 & 3 compete in our Junior Athletics Carnival. They competed in multiple events, some of which the students had been learning in PE.

Student Feedback of the Junior Athletics Carnival:

Last Tuesday we had our Junior Athletics Carnival. We did a lot of different events like running, high five relay, tug ‘o’ war, jumping over hurdles and throwing activities. My favourite part of the day was when we had to jump over hurdles, do 3 star jumps then race back to the finish line. I also liked dressing up in my House colour red because my favourite colour is red.

Year 4 Drumbeat

Miss Taylor Rhodes Year 4 Professional Learning Community Leader

This term, a group of Year 4 students have been involved in the DRUMBEAT program. DRUMBEAT is an acronym which stands for Discovering Relationships Using Music, Beliefs, Emotions, Attitudes, and Thoughts. It is a structured learning program using music and psychology to help our youth connect with themselves and others. The program has been proven to increase mental wellbeing and reduce antisocial behaviour.

The boys have been working very closely with Jordan Barrow, a Youth Development Officer, from Wyndham Youth Services. He has been working with the boys teaching them about collaboration through the use of Djembe. Together, the group focus on creating rhythms to represent thoughts and emotions. The group of boys have been working very hard to showcase their drumming skills at the upcoming Grade 4 community assembly.

DRUMBEAT has been a successful program because the students involved have developed fantastic listening skills and the ability to work cooperatively.

Year 6 Cricket

On Monday 25th November our Year 6 cricket team took part in a round robin cricket event at Galvin Park, Werribee. Students were competing at the district finals against other schools from the western region. We had three pool matches to play and with some great batting and fielding from all players we were successful in all three matches. We then moved into the final against Tarneit P-9 College. We won the toss and elected to bat first. After some good batting and running between the wickets we were able to make a good score that was going to be hard to beat. Unfortunately Tarneit batted very well and they were able to chase down our score and win the game. Although we lost the final, we have moved on to the regional. All students represented the school in a positive manner by demonstrating the school values and showing sportsmanship to other schools. Well done boys!

What is your favourite colour? My favourite colour is blue. It is the colour of the ocean and the sky, my favourite places to be. What is your favourite number and why? My favourite number is 19. I don’t know why, it just is! What is your favourite book and why? My favourite book is Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. It is the story of the life of Miyamoto Musashi a very famous Japa-nese swordsman. It made me realise there are so many wonderful books writ-ten by authors in languages other than English. What is your favourite food? That’s easy. My favourite food is Som Tum. It is a thai salad consisting most-ly of green papaya and chillies. My mouth waters every time I think about it. What do you like most about teaching and learning? I don’t teach but I love to learn. If I don’t learn something new every day I feel like I have wasted time! I read every single day, as much as I can, about all sorts of things.

Get to know Vicki Stanley – Year 1 Teacher in Room 6

What is your favourite colour? My favourite colour is green. What is your favourite number and why? My favourite number is two. I prefer even numbers - I like their symmetry. In the world everything is balanced and this is often represented by two opposites (like day and night) and 2 is the only even prime number. Being the only even prime also makes 2 odd, and that bal-ances out the symmetry. What is your favourite book and why? My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice for its beautiful and compelling use of language, whether in the dialogue or in letters between the characters. Austen is also a master of characterisation – you loathe some characters, love others and desperately want to get to know some better – and this makes the writing and story absorbing. The story itself is also timeless, and yet was in some ways ahead of its time and continues to speak to feminists on the position of women in society. What is your favourite food? My favourite food is Sushi, for its freshness, colour and precision. What do you like most about teaching and learning? Getting to know students and why learning is important to them and them figuring out how best to use this to help them exceed their aspirations – working for that wonderful moment of a new achievement and then the magic of the next deeper question that leads to real insight. There’s nothing better. Plus, being challenged every day to learn more myself so I can tap into what students most need to succeed.

We are seeking expressions of interest from families who would like to host a Year 9 student from Spain in July-Aug 2020. The Spanish Year 9 students would be spending the first four weeks of Term 3 with us, so we need to find families that are willing to have them as part of their family for the duration of their stay. If you are interested, this is what you need to do:

Speak English at home, so the students are able to practise speaking English, as part of their exchange. Adult family members will need to have a ‘Working With Children Check’ – (free and available online). Available to collect the Spanish student from the airport and return them at the end of the four weeks.

Our Year 8 and 9 students are going to have the opportunity to visit Spain in September 2020, where they will get to spend time at the Spanish school and meet with the students who will have spent time at Truganina in July-Aug. It would be wonderful if we could find Truganina families to host as many Spanish students as possible, so that we can repay the amazing hospitality that we receive from our Spanish sister school. Hosting a student is a great opportunity to learn about another culture and share your family experiences with someone from another country.

If you are interested in having a Spanish Year 9 student stay with you family, could you please fill out and return this form so the students can begin booking their flights for next year.

Thank you in advance for your support of our Spanish Exchange program. Leanne McNaughton Assistant Principal – Middle Years 5-9 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
