MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
ART SHOW Preparations are almost complete and
we are looking forward to a fabulous
celebration tonight. A very big
thank you to all our wonderful helpers
for the tireless efforts you make in order
to produce such a great night of
festivities. We look forward to seeing
you all to celebrate the amazing
talents of the students at Sunshine
Primary School.
Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year
5 students who this year have
achieved some terrific results in the
NAPLAN tests. We have quite a
number of students who have
achieved above and beyond the
expected level in Literacy and
Numeracy. Overall the school is
making solid gains in all curriculum
areas and particularly in the area of
student growth. By tracking students in
Year Three to Year Five we can pin
point the amount of growth our
students are making. It has been
extremely rewarding to see the
number of students achieving low
growth decline whilst the number
achieving high growth has increased.
Acknowledgment to the wonderful
work teachers are doing to focus on
quality teaching and learning as well
as the students themselves for setting
high expectations of themselves and
working hard to achieve their goals.
3-6 DOXA CAMP I am pleased to report that
places are now full. Final
payment is required by
Monday 5 October.
Even though all places are now full we
have setup a waiting list for students
who are still interested. If we have a
cancellation the first student on the list
will be offered the place and so on.
VALUE MASCOT NAMES Thank you to those students who
suggested names for our value
mascots. The successful names are:
Respectful Ruby
Lilly the Learner
Safety Sam.
We are now working
with Brett from
Cardytoons to create our new fence
friends.

FIRST AID IN SCHOOLS
PROGRAM St John Ambulance will visit our
school on Monday 7 September
to deliver free First Aid in Schools
training to our students. Through the First Aid in
Schools Program, trained St John presenters will
lead students from Prep to Year Six through
tailored sessions on the importance of First Aid
and what to do in the event of an emergency.
Our junior students will learn about how to
identify when there is an emergency, keeping
themselves safe, and how to call for an
ambulance. Senior students will learn about
delivering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
and the things they can do to assist in an
emergency.
Students will be given a special piece of
homework for parents to complete.
We encourage you to “do your homework” and
go online with St John to see how much you
know about First Aid. Are you First Aid READY?
More information about the St John First Aid in
Schools program can be found at:

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
REMINDER - ATTENDANCE PROCEDURE We understand that from time to time students
may be absent from school. On these
occasions we ask parents to provide an
explanation for the absence to the school
through means such as:
FOLLOW UP All unexplained absences will be followed
through on a weekly bases with a
computer generated letter from the
office requesting parents to please give a
reason for their child’s absence in the
space provided, sign and return to the
classroom teacher or office. Upon return
of this letter your child’s absence will be
modified with the explanation that you
have provided.
SUPPORT GROUPS This term and next term, we have
been able to allocate some extra
time to our Education Support Staff
to run some additional support groups, targeting
areas of need. Some of these groups include
developing skills in literacy, numeracy, personal
development and social skills. These groups have
been planned by the classroom teacher and or/
other staff. We have already noticed some
changes in the confidence of some of our
students who are working in these groups and
are positive that this will assist in the
development of our students.

Premiers Reading Challenge Update!
We have now passed the half way
mark! I hope everyone has been
busy reading. The Premiers Reading
Challenge finishes on Monday 14 September.
Every student who completes the challenge will
go into the draw to win one of nine copies of
the 65-Storey Treehouse! That’s right, the 65
Storey-Treehouse is the new book in Andy
Griffiths Treehouse series and has just been
released!
What you have to do:
Visit the school library and borrow texts
from the Premiers Reading Challenge
section.
Visit your local library and read.
Just remember the titles.
Read Premier’s Reading Challenge books
as part of your Just Right books every
week.
Your teacher will enter any texts the class
reads together for you.
Students can fill in their Premiers Reading
Challenge log in their classroom.
Check with your teacher if it’s ok to take
the logs home.
Premiers Reading Challenge logs are
collected on Fridays and all books are
entered for all children online.

2/3LK made Oobleck to celebrate Science Week. We needed 1 ½ cups of cornflour, 1 cup water and 3 drops of food colouring. Then we stirred it around and the spoon got stuck in the mix. When we played with it, it turned into a solid. Then when we stopped playing with it, it turned into a liquid and just dripped down our hands. It was a very fun experiment.
By Marcus and Shae - 2/3 LK
To celebrate Science Week, students in 1EM made lava lamps using water, oil and food dye. They made predictions and observations, and then explained what they had learnt:
Oil and water don’t mix together. Tomas
Tablet + water = gas. Ayat
When you put the tablet in, it goes down then the gas goes up. Jericho
You can’t feel gas. Yuvraj
The tablet in the water is turning into small bits. Kajal
Food dye and water go down because they are heavier and the oil is lighter. Thuan
The chemicals in the oil hate the water. Muhammad
The oil was sitting on top of the water. When you put a tablet in the bottle it will go fizzy. Jade
The water and oil don’t like each other. That’s why they don’t mix. Elwyn
Oil and water do not mix because oil does not like water. Felicity
Water is heavier than gas. Nina
Oil and water do not mix. Martin
The tablet fizzed up into green bubbles. Alivia
I predicted that the oil was going to go up. Rowan
Oil is lighter than water. They are not friends. Gas is so light it makes bubbles. Leah
Oil is lighter and water is heavier. Abiraj
The chemicals do not mix. Charlie
We planted Beans.
Watching it grow. Nope - still nothing.
