Welcome from the President:The Second Great Electrification of United States

Greetings to AEEOK Members and Honored Colleagues of AEEOK.

We learned about 150 years ago how awesome it was to use fossil fuels to improve our lives. We could use that Oklahoma Sweet Crude to move our cars, airplanes, boats and natural gas for cooking and warming our homes. And fossil fuels to power up plants to make electricity. If not for fossil fuels, civilization as we know today would not exist. Think about a world without gasoline or electricity. There would be no kicks on Route

66 or NASCAR and without electricity no Disney World, movie theaters, or air conditioning. So regardless of your political or environmental views there is no need to create guilt about the First Great Electrification of the United States. Because without fossil fuels our civilization would have not evolved as we know it today.

The answer to our environmental and political woes might not be that complicated if we get creative and discover real solutions to keep our society moving forward. We need jobs to get people working not only with their minds, but also their hands. We are all created unique with different skills and talents. Some people prefer to work in labor and trades and not analyze spreadsheets all day. I recently completed a few home improvement projects myself, and learned how satisfying it is to build and create using a hammer and turning a screwdriver. We have all kinds of ability in this county to continue America’s greatness. The timing is right for us to consider the Second Great Electrification of the United States and yes this will create jobs from all skill sets. The first great electrification event started in 1880’s was called "the greatest engineering achievement of the 20th Century.” What will be said of the Second?

Electricity is the only truly sustainable form of energy since it can be produced from renewable sources: geothermal, wind, hydropower, bio energy, heat pumps, and solar. The US doesn’t need less electrification but more. As members of AEEOK we need to have a clear vision of the

future and take the lead for the Second Great Electrification of the United States

Thank you,

Kerry Rowland, CEM

OKLAHOMA CITY – Electricity customers saved a bundle thanks to utility company programs.

Energy efficiency programs in Oklahoma have saved about 450 megawatts over eight years, nearly the equivalent of a new power plant. Those programs took advantage of the cheapest energy resource the state has, said Tracy Poole, an energy attorney with McAfee & Taft.

Energy efficiency saves customers money and keeps utility rates low because it can help avoid building a new power plant. A 500 MW coal-fired power plant costs at least $500 million, Poole said.

“Energy efficiency is the cheapest megawatt you’ll ever get,” he said.

Kylah McNabb, energy policy adviser to the state secretary of energy and environment, said customers pay for the costs of new power plants. Avoiding building new power plants is one reason why Oklahoma’s electricity rates are the cheapest in the nation, she said. That’s an attractive selling point for businesses seeking to relocate to the state, she said.

It also conserves resources, because electric power plants use water. McNabb said it’s important to remember water conservation as much of the state returned to some drought stage. Each megawatt-hour of electricity in Oklahoma consumes about 510 gallons of water on average, according to a 2003 National Renewable Energy Laboratory report.

Public Service Co. of Oklahoma will save about 643 million gallons of water over the life of its energy efficiency programs, according to the company’s 2015 annual energy efficiency report. Utilities submit the reports to the Oklahoma Corporation Commission annually and the agency uses an independent auditor to validate the reports.

PSO’s Jeff Brown, consumer programs manager, said energy efficiency programs will continue to save money and water and reduce air pollution as the company continues to add more features.

“If we can get customers to save energy, it gets us to save from building a new power plant and save by keeping rates low,” Brown said. “That helps to grow the Oklahoma economy, and leads to fewer emissions and less water consumption.”

PSO’s customers saved 370 gigawatt-hours from 2009 to 2016, Brown said, due to a combination of reducing electricity consumption when demand is the highest in the summer, as well as by installing more efficient heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems.

Both PSO and OG&E have recently implemented a lightbulb rebate program for light emitting diode lights, or LED lights. The discount is already built into the cost, and consumers can purchase the discounted lights at big-box home improvement stores, said OG&E spokeswoman Kathleen O’Shea. Though changing lightbulbs from less efficient halogen or fluorescent bulbs to the LED variety might not seem like much, the kilowatt-hours add up in aggregate, she said.

The utility’s former CEO and chairman, Pete Delaney, established a goal several years ago to avoid building a new power plant before 2020. That created an impetus for the company to invest in programs that encourage customers to shift electricity use from peak times and to install energy-efficient fixtures.

OG&E paid customers $7.5 million as part of its energy efficiency programs for 750 projects in 2016. Those projects at large commercial entities, schools, and government buildings saved more than 80 gigawatt-hours, according to information the company provided.

OG&E employees constantly re-evaluate the energy efficiency programs to include improved technology and to ensure all customer classes benefit from the initiative, she said.

“We want to make sure our programs are available to everyone,” she said.

McNabb said many people don’t realize the benefits of energy efficiency programs and the substantial savings that can be achieved in aggregate. Gov. Mary Fallin’s Oklahoma First energy policy includes energy efficiency as one its resources.

“What’s been achieved so far is an important first step, but it’s about continuing this progress,” McNabb said. “There is still more that can be done for commercial retrofit projects.”

Power Savings Week Impact

Tranes Energy Performance software was installed at Edmond Public Schools. This was a power ‘test’ week that the facility department wanted to enact.

The teachers came together at the school to discuss ways they can reduce energy and rolled it into a learning week for the elementary students (2/20-2/24).

After the discussion, one of the Elementary School teachers received this email:

DATE: FEBRUARY 23, 2017 AT 4:54:53 PM CSTSUBJECT: POWER SAVING

Miss Little,

Thank you for your power saving challenge or whatever you are calling it at school. This afternoon, Vlad was willing to sit and read a book instead of watching TV to save power. I only suggested it and he went with it. He is now sitting outside using the sunlight to read his book.

Thank you,Vlad's dad

OKLAHOMA CITY – Energy industry executives need to stop throwing rocks at one another and sit around the campfire instead, an energy conference was told Thursday.

Collaboration among industries could help Oklahoma rise to become a major energy producer nationwide in the next decade. The state has power sources 5,000 feet below ground and shining down on the surface. However, fighting about which energy resource is superior will only hold back Oklahoma’s economy, said several industry observers. Regulators and industry executives discussed Thursday the past and future of energy policy at Oklahoma City University’s College of Law during a luncheon.

Steve Dixon, CEO of private oil and gas driller Tapstone Energy, said the last decade of energy development was marked with disruptive technology.

He was a geologist at Chesapeake Energy Corp. when co-founders Aubrey McClendon and Tom Ward combined horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. The company used those two techniques to aggressively drill in Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The result was the so-called Shale Revolution. The U.S. went from running out of natural gas to an abundance of the commodity. That development created a vibrant oil-field service industry and well-trained workforce that makes the state a great place to drill, Dixon said. Large independent companies have taken industry advances to develop Oklahoma’s hottest play, the STACK.

“Big operators like Devon, Continental and Newfield all have huge acreage positions in the STACK,” Dixon said. “All of this has been brought to the state by horizontal drilling.”

The next 10 years could see more integration of solar and wind power, said Oklahoma Corporation Commission Chairman Dana Murphy. Expansion of those two resources are mainly limited by infrastructure, she said.

“Maybe in 10 years we will be able to store electricity in an economically viable way,” Murphy said. “That is the wave of the future.”

GE Oil and Gas Technology Research Center general manager Mike Ming agreed. The next generation of energy resources must be clean, reliable and affordable, he said.

“That’s natural gas and wind and maybe solar and oil is a big part of that,” Ming said. “We will be well-positioned to be a big supplier of energy.”

Energy and Environment Secretary Mike Teague said Ming laid the groundwork for the all-of-the-above energy policy. Ming was the energy secretary from 2011 to 2013 and was the principal author of Gov. Mary Fallin’s Oklahoma First energy plan. The policy document includes conventional fossil fuels, renewable sources and energy efficiency. Pursuing all energy sources will help Oklahoma producers maintain their social license to operate, Teague said. But they must collaborate, he said.

“We (Oklahoma) should be at the center of an all-of-the-above energy strategy, but instead, they are all out at the Capitol throwing rocks at each other,” Teague said.

Solar and wind power should be viewed as a business opportunity, he later told The Journal Record.

Jim Roth, director of Phillips Murrah’s clean energy practice group, was moderator of the discussion. He later wrote to The Journal Record that fuel fights are shortsighted and work against Oklahoman’s best interests. All energy sources bring jobs, investment and tax revenue, he wrote. Murphy said different energy sectors could learn something from the oil and gas sector. Competitors worked together and brought proprietary geology data to regulators and scientists studying Oklahoma’s recent earthquakes.

Utility companies must also be willing to include renewable resources when they make requests to buy power, she said.

Ming said businesses should alter their approach: look for the best source of energy, regardless of the pollution it emits. That led the U.S. to use more use natural gas and wind power and rely more on energy efficiency. Coal fell out of favor because it wasn’t as efficient as those other sources, he said.

“That’s because people did the right thing, chose the right energy source, for the right reason,” Ming said.

VRF Gaining Acceptance in the HVAC MarketplaceWhen VRF technology was introduced to the U.S. more than 10 years ago, few could have predicted how quickly the commercial market would embrace these new systems. Many initially thought of the equipment as a niche product that would find its place in select applications but felt it would never be considered a mainstream technology by the HVAC industry.

Smart Grid's Influences Range From Solar Panels to the Internet of ThingsBuzzwords appear out of nowhere, capture everyone’s attention, and then fade away. These words, or phrases, often get our attention because they bring huge problems, or opportunities, into focus. The term “smart grid” was an eye-opener at the time the Eastern Seaboard went dark on Aug. 14, 2003. Utilities Offset Slow Load Growth
