What’s happening…

School Review Update The School Review Report has now been completed by the school reviewers and is being cross checked by the school leadership team to ensure accuracy. The next stage is for the report to be presented to staff and school council by the school reviewer (Dr David Gurr). This will take place next Wednesday. School council will then discuss the next phase of the review process including distribution within the broader community and our processes around developing a new strategic plan.

Malaysian Airline Flight MH -17 The tragedy of Malaysian Airline MH -17 is featuring heavily in the media. Naturally, events such as this might come up in conversations within classrooms. Teachers will deal with these sorts of circumstances with discretion. If there are any members of the school community, adults and students, who may require professional support, please feel free to contact me or any other teachers at the school. Regards, Graham Our school is participating in the Nationally Consistent Data Collection on School Students with Disability (the Data Collection) which is taking place in schools across Australia this year.

What is the Data Collection? The Data Collection will collect information about students with a disability who require support to participate in education on the same basis as other students.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) describes a very broad range of health and learning conditions. Under the DDA and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 schools have obligations to ensure that students with these conditions are able to access and participate in education on the same basis as other students. This includes providing reasonable adjustments where needed, in consultation with the student’s parents, carers or guardians.

This Data Collection aims to gather information about how many students in schools have a health or learning condition requiring adjustments be made to support their access to and participation in education. The Data Collection is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities, and will collect valuable information about supports provided to a much wider group of students than those previously included in individually targeted disability support programs such as the Program for Students with Disabilities.

Why is this information being collected? The Data Collection aims to provide more accurate and complete information about the number and distribution of Australian school students with disability as well as the adjustments provided to enable them to access education on the same basis as students without disability. The Data Collection will inform future policy and planning for the provision of education services around the country and ensure that there is a nationally consistent approach to identifying students with disability.

Lynne, Barbara and Ben will be conducting this collection of data over the next two weeks and will be contacting individual parents when the collection has been finalized. If you have any queries in the meantime please don’t hesitate to contact me on 9481 5577. Regards, Lynne

National Tree Day is Friday 25th July

Westgarth Primary School is celebrating National Tree day this week! Each grade will be giving an award to a tree in the playground. They are giving their awards for a variety of reasons: Tallest, Widest, Most Leafy, Smoothest Bark, etc.

Ask your child which tree they have ‘adopted’ and awarded and the reason they gave their tree the award. Perhaps start a conversation about trees in your yard or local park and why they are so important for humans, animals, plants and all life on Earth! Maybe you could award a tree in your yard or park. Maybe you could even plant a special tree on the weekend to celebrate National Tree day!

We would also like to ask the school community if there are any tree-identification experts (e.g. arborists, horticulturalists, etc.) who could visit the school and identify our awarded trees and tell us any features or facts about them. Please see us if you can assist or email the school at [email protected]. Thank you and Happy Tree Day!!! Andy (Grade 6) and Heidi (Grade 1), Sustainability Co-ordinators

Art Fundraiser - School Calendars, Cards and Diaries

This term students will be creating a piece of artwork that will be made into calendars, cards and diaries as a fundraiser for Westgarth Primary School.

A sample from the printing company (Kids Art Works) is on display at the office.

An order form for the calendars, cards and diaries is being sent home today.

The calendars are $13, a set of 8 cards is $14 per pack and diaries are $18. The same piece of work will be used for all items.

The order forms and money should be returned to school no later than Friday 15th August, 2014. It is very important that a separate order form is used for each child, as this identifies each child’s artwork.

Thanks, Aimee - ART.

Dogs - It has been brought to our attention that families are dropping off and collecting their children at school with their dogs off their leash. For the safety of all students we remind parents and carers that dogs must be on their lead at all times and are not permitted within the school grounds.

Stolen Bikes - There have been a number of locked bikes stolen from the Clarke Street bike shed afterhours. Please collect your bikes at 3.30pm as this is not a secure environment after 3.30pm. Please refer to Northcote Police piece in community advertisements.

Museum of Me

On Thursday the 17th of July four residents from

the Rucker’s Hill Retirement Village came to our

school to look at our space expo.

The choir performed two songs to the residents.

The choir sang I’m Yours and Sir Duke.

The residents came because our school is part of a

pilot program called Museum of Me. For the last

8 weeks of Term 2, two groups of grade 5s have

been walking down to Westgarth Aged Care

Facility*.

In our first week we got assigned to an elder and

in the other weeks we have been doing activities

such as: bringing in a special item, playing games,

afternoon tea, and lots more fun stuff.

After the choir performed, we showed the elders

through our exhibits. The elders were extremely

surprised at how different school was and how

smart we were.

Once we had showed the elders around our

exhibits we sat down and ate our morning tea.

Once we had finished we said goodbye to all the

elders and we hope we will see them again soon.

*Unfortunately the Westgarth residents were

unable to come.

Whopping Great Fete 2014

Sunday 19th October

Only 2 months, 3 weeks, 6 days, 20 hours and 56 minutes to go (at time of writing) until the Whopping Great Fete gates open to the public! Yikes!!

Prepare thee for a term of many fete notices, but fear ye not – it all comes together in the end!

Whopping Great Raffle Thanks to Jo Beveridge for organising a fabulous prize for our raffle – a Nancybird bag and silk scarf. Northcote’s answer to the Birkin will have fashionistas in a frenzy snapping up our raffle tickets. However, we still need more than $3000 worth of raffle prizes, so we’re not there yet. If you can make or organise a donation we’d love to hear from you soon. Raffle books go home to each family (approx 500) in term 3 and are promoted throughout our community until fete day. Thanks to Nancybird for this generous donation - www.nancybird.com/ [email protected], 0413 867 061

Kids Activities - get in touch with your inner child… We’re on track to deliver another big fete. Our market stalls are gearing up, a delicious menu is set for the food court, the silent auction is going loud (keep the prizes coming) and a big stage is booked ready for the talented lineup. Now, what we really want is to make the day FUN! You know, for kids.

We’re holding a meeting of people involved in current or proposed children’s activities and if you too have ideas and/or a willingness to help out, please join us for a one and only Kids Activities pow-wow. If you are interested in coming, please bring one or more of these:... Your wacky, wonderful and workable ideas Your enthusiasm and support Your plan to make an activity work in a fete setting (or let the group help you) Most importantly, YOUR INNER CHILD!

To get you thinking, here are some ideas for activities that have been suggested by the children, or seen at other events that we could consider... box maze, billy cart races, haunted house, fortune telling, crazy hair, photo booth, garland making, magic shows, movie room and art and craft activities. If you want to see your child(ren) enjoying more home spun fun and less thrill seeking rides, this is your chance to make it happen.

Meeting Details: Thursday 24 July, 7:30pm Farmhouse, Clarke Street campus RSVP 0413 867 061, [email protected] so we can better prepare for the night. BYO whoopee cushion!

FABULOUS F.U.R.S (Free Uniform Recycling Stall) !!!! Thank you to all the lovely Westgarth parents! The Free Uniform Recycling Stall was held by your Parents and Friends Club on the last Thursday of term and was a roaring success. Lots of parents donated clean uniforms for recycling, and these were much appreciated by the excited shoppers who stripped the stall of some excellent bargains. ‘Free? Really?’, parents kept asking, and we were delighted to reassure them that was the case. Bags, jumpers, tunics, shorts, dresses and more walked out the door.

Keep putting your clean, second-hand Westgarth uniforms in the labelled box on my verandah at 3 Bower St, Northcote, and we will try to hold another stall shortly.

Are you on Twitter? We now have a @WestgarthP&F twitter account so please follow us as we explore Northcote and community and post some family fun.
