Newsletter Friday, 28th June 2013 Dear Parents, Carers, This week I attended a conference on the future of Sixth Form in London as we are preparing our Sixth Form business plan to the Department for Education and the Education Funding Agency. You will be aware that we are looking at expanding possibilities and opportunities for our community with the opening of a Sixth Form in September 2014. We invited parents of our current Year 10 to attend a Sixth Form evening on Wednesday and presented our vision and our plans. The feedback was extremely positive and insightful. There were a number of questions asked by parents: 1) How will staff plan? Every 3 weeks, our staff professional development will focus on planning for the Sixth form. In addition to this, a full Inset day will be focusing on learning visits to outstanding schools across the UK. This will be an ongoing development. 2) When will my child know if you are running the course? We are intending to run an open evening in November 2013. This will help students to inform us of their preferred courses by December 2013. We aim to inform the students early January 2014 as to which courses we will run. 3) Will you appoint more staff? We are intending to appoint a Director of Sixth Form who will be part of the Senior Leadership. There will also be further appointments later on during the year. We are looking at all our teaching staff to teach from Year 7 to Year 13 by 2015. 4) What will be the impact on the rest of the school? It will raise aspiration even more as we will open the school to Universities and further education institutions. We are aiming to have university representatives during our parents’ evening for all year groups. 5) How different will the Sixth Form be from the rest of the school? Our Sixth Form will have their own building and will not be expected to wear a full school uniform. Students will however be expected to dress smartly for event days. 6) Will you recruit Sixth Form students from other schools? It is our intention to keep at least 80% of our students at Fareham Academy and to offer Sixth Form opportunities to students from other schools. 7) Who will support students for their UCAS application? We will have a team of specialized Form Tutors who will support the process. Parents have asked me ‘Is it hard being a Headteacher’? ‘How do you make it happen’? It is a combination of hard work, attention to detail and teamwork. What makes a difference for me is that I am really privileged and honored to do the job that I love, to work with inspiring, impressive, unique colleagues and governors, and to have the support of so many parents to build the future of our children, a future that we can all be proud of. Dear Parents, Carers,

This week I attended a conference on the future of Sixth Form in London as we are preparing our Sixth Form business plan to the Department for Education and the Education Funding Agency.

There were a number of questions asked by parents:

1) How will staff plan?

Governor News

This week I attended both the 6th Form Information Evening and the Year 7 Parent’s evening where I spoke to

a number of parents about the conversion to Academy, the Sixth Form due to open in September 2014, our

new school uniform and the taster day that we held on Wednesday for Year 5 children. There is always a

Governor present at school events so please do come and talk to us, we value you and your children’s views on

the school in any area that you have an interest in.

Uniform from September 2013

As of September 2013, students are expected to wear the full school uniform and to be clean and tidy at all

times. Garments should be of an appropriate size. Blazers, jumpers and ties are available to be purchased from

the school. The uniform will consist of:

Plain white shirt (long or short sleeve) and school tie

School black “V” necked jumper with the blue inlay

School black blazer

Black loose fitting trousers—no cord, denim or leggings

Grey or black socks

Plain black leather shoes are to be worn. No boots, trainers, canvas or dolly shoes

School Trousers

As of September we are now specifying the trousers that students should wear, this will reduce any confusion

of what is acceptable and what isn’t. With the conversion to Academy and the introduction of the new uniform,

we wish that our students look presentable and smart at all times. We hope that by specifying the correct

trousers that the confusion will be reduced and that this move will address the issue. We have undertaken

extensive research to find the most suitable trouser for the school and we have identified that the following

are most appropriate:

PE Kit

School PE kit, navy blue with academy logo (can be ordered and collected from the school).

Trainers

Football boots for girls and boys are compulsory

Students in years 9-11 that have the previous PE kit will not be expected to change to the new PE kit until they

require it.

The wearing of personally designed mouth guards is recommended as a valuable means of protection when

taking part in rugby or hockey activities. Parents are advised to purchase shin pads for rugby and football for

health and safety reasons.

Please note no other items of sportswear may be worn.

Outdoor Coats

Outdoor coats can be worn on top of the school jumper and blazer but must be removed when in the building.

Students can keep them in lockers or carry them to lessons.

Hair

Styles should not be extreme in fashion. No outrageous or unusual colours are permitted. Shaved heads are

not acceptable. Students can be sent home if they come to school with a haircut close to their scalp.

Jewellery

In general we believe that the wearing of jewellery is not in keeping with a formal school uniform. Items of

jewellery can be a safety hazard and security is difficult in the school environment.

For these reasons students may only wear:

A watch

A single chain with religious symbol hidden from view

Students may only wear single studs in the ear.

Please note that no other jewellery will be allowed.

Make Up

Year 11 girls are permitted to wear discreet make up and clear or natural coloured nail varnish. Girls in all

other years are not permitted to wear make up or nail varnish and will be asked to remove it.

Please check the ‘Latest News’ and ‘Coming Soon’ pages on our website to see the date and time of when your

child is required to come for their uniform fitting in July. If you are unable to attend these days please email

Adeline Owen ([email protected]) detailing your child’s name & year group. Please note that

there will be more than enough uniform sizes available, however we do strongly recommend that you attend

your selected uniform date and time.

HIRA

Last weekend Mrs Hinks and Mrs Edwards took 5 HIRA students to Calshot for an activity packed weekend.

We went with Hampshire Playing Fields Association and took part in activities all weekend, including Archery,

Climbing and Water Sports.

We are very proud of all of our students and they were a credit to the school.

Religious Studies students visit to ST Vincent College

On Tuesday the Year 9 RS GCSE option group were invited to attend an enrichment course at St Vincent

College to study the concepts of Rebellion and Resistance. The students participated in four workshops, one

each on Music, English, Sociology and History.

In Music we looked at the lyrics of songs by the likes of David Bowie “Rebel, Rebel. In English we reflected on

why some books have been banned and whether this is acceptable in a free society. In Sociology we looked at

the events of the Brixton Riots and the ideas of “youth” and rebellion and finally in History we considered

famous revolutions and whether it is ever acceptable to rebel against a government.

The students were a credit to themselves and the school. They received certificates for their contribution to

the success of the day, a box of chocolates to share and notably Courtney Lewis was awarded the Sociology

prize which included a certificate and a Sociology book.

Virgin London Triathlon for the Brain Tumour Charity

Mr Collins is completing the Virgin London Triathlon on Sunday July 28th to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity. This charity has helped support Sam John in recent years and as Mr Collins can’t raise money directly for Sam he has decided to support the Brain Tumour Charity. The event is held over two days at London Docklands and is the biggest triathlon in the world, the event consists of a 1500m swim in the docklands, a 42km bike ride and a 10k run. Mr Collins is hoping to raise in excess of £1000 so if you would like to sponsor him please follow the link below. Thank you to everyone who has donated already.

Year 7 PE Leadership Academy

Our year 7 PE leadership academy students helped to run a year 1 and 2 infant agility festival for our Primary feeder school on Wednesday 26th June. We hosted over 70 primary school students. Our leadership academy students were responsible for running various activities throughout the session, demonstrating how to complete activities as well as recording results from each activity. It was great to see so many of our students helping to support the development of our primary school students. Well done to all involved.

Year 7 Parents Evening

A huge thank you to both Year 8 girls Louise Pilley and Leah Ilsley for their hard work at the Year 7 parents evening on Wednesday 26th June 2013. Both girls worked very professionally and were a massive credit to the school. The event was very successful with a turnout of 83% which is the highest percentage that the school has ever had!
