HEALTHY HAPPENINGS – R U OK DAY?

Something we're never too young to learn is that asking "are you ok?" can make a difference. We want to inspire

students to ask each other about the stuff that really matters and be there for one another when life gets a bit tough

or stressful. By giving teenagers the confidence to start conversations regularly and with real care, they can be the

generation that transforms the way we look out for anyone struggling with life.

R U OK? Day is a national day of action held annually to encourage and empower all people to regularly and

meaningfully ask ‘are you ok?’ to support those struggling with life. On this day, Newcomb Secondary College will be

promoting meaningful conversations and how to access ongoing support for students.

Newcomb Secondary College will be acknowledging R U OK? Day on Thursday 11th September. Students can wear

casual dress on the day in return for a gold coin donation.

At lunch time the Stand Out Group and the SRC will be selling sausages and biscuits, as well as giving away show

bags filled with information raising awareness of mental health. All money raised by the school will be donated

between local and national mental health agencies including The National R U OK? Day Campaign,

Beyond Blue and Headspace Geelong.

MINIMUM SCHOOL LEAVING AGE Some parents may be unaware that in recent times the school leaving age has actually been changed to 17.

The law governing compulsory attendance at school and the minimum school leaving age in Victoria states that

young people from the age of 6 to 17 must attend school or an approved equivalent, unless otherwise exempted.

Teenagers are now required by law to complete Year 10 and until they turn 17, are to be in fulltime education,

training or employment, or a combination of these activities.

Our Newcomb Secondary College team work very hard to assist students to achieve a successful pathway into

employment or further education.

YEAR 9 RESIDENTIAL CAMP AT DEAKIN UNIVERSITY

By now, parents should be well aware of the exciting opportunity coming up in Term 4 for all Year 9

students. The Deakin Residential Camp runs from Monday 17th to Tuesday 18th November, and is

completely FREE, including accommodation, meals and travel.

Year 9 students will select the friends they would like to share the accommodation with for the night. At

university, students stay in what they call “Res” which is short for residence. At the Burwood campus, the

students usually share with around 8 – 10 other students. They each have their own furnished bedroom and

share the kitchen, living area and bathroom with their friends.

The same will apply to the Year 9 students. You will be asked to name up to 6 – 8 friends you would like to

share with for the night. There will also be a teacher in a downstairs room, with all the students upstairs. For

accommodation, the girls and boys are not permitted to mix, but in choosing groups for activities through the

day, we encourage mixed groups.

This is a film camp, where your group will write and perform a short film. This will be guided by a Deakin

University film student, who will help you with writing, directing, and filming. Then the film will be edited in

the professional film studios at Deakin and there will be a presentation of all the films on the final afternoon.

Please note that parents are invited to join us on Tuesday to take part in lunch and the celebration at the end.

If you would like to come, Deakin will arrange transport for you to and

from the university, or you are most welcome to make your own way

there. Please let me know as soon as possible if this is an option you

would like to consider.

We are excited about the camp and hope that nearly all of our Year 9

students will take the opportunity to experience university life first

hand. Forms should be returned by now and we will begin sorting

groups for accommodation and activities.

Please call me at school if you have any queries about the camp.

On Thursday 4th September 5 of our students – Matt P, Liam T, Mark H, Jarrah W and Pel R were lucky enough

to be accepted into a special AFL program aimed at identifying multicultural and indigenous sporting talent.

The boys were taken to the “The Arena” in North Geelong where they were introduced to AFL players and

coaches before being put through their paces in a number of skills and endurance tests.

Activities included a timed sprint test, an agility course test, a standing and running jump test, and a beep test.

There were 33 students from Geelong and Colac Government and Private schools in attendance. All students

played each other in a handball match to finish off the day.

Detailed observations and statistics were collected by the AFL representatives and if our students performed

well they may receive a follow up call for entry into further programs.

Thanks to AFL Victoria, AFL Barwon and the Cotton On Foundation for the day.
