Dear Parents
Learning without thinking is labour lost; thinking without learning is dangerous.
~Chinese
proverb
I have recently returned from an invigorating and rigorous Deputy Head‟s conference in Johannesburg,
this was time well spent. I have come back realizing that Grantleigh is a wonderfully affirming, rigorous
and exiting space at present and we are delighted with the progress we continue to make in all facets of
school life.
On Friday evening two weeks ago we celebrated all things cultural during our College Cultural Awards
ceremony organized by our Head of Culture Mrs Susan van den Berg and her team. They ensured that
fun was had by all and we have no doubt that all who attended the evening will join me in congratulating
her and the team and offering our sincere thanks for their dedication and commitment to the Arts. Last
Friday evening I had the pleasure of attending the College Sports Awards ceremony and this was equally
a testimony to the talent at Grantleigh. The students were addressed by our guest speaker Kyle Abbott
who pointed out the importance of enjoying your school career and sticking to you goals no matter what
difficulties may arise. Perseverance and self believe are key elements to success. We thank Mr Dewald
Kruger and his team for the organizing and smooth running of the function.
Ultimately a school is about the young children, men and women who attend it and I am continually
amazed at the number of achievements and accolades received by our students in a range of activities.
Students continue to thrive here, they continue to learn, to grow in confidence and stature and they
continue to amaze us with their resilience and positive attitude.
The students of Grantleigh are engaged, motivated and determined to grow and learn in every aspect and I
look forward to celebrating the joy of learning as we head into our celebrations during the term. We say
goodbye to the Matrics at their Valedictory and we celebrate their and everyone else‟s unique impact in
the life of our school during this term.
Robert Frost says in that wonderful poem „The Road Not Taken‟: yet knowing how way leads onto way, I
doubted that I should ever come back. So too we move on as a school and say farewell to these Matrics
who have made a significant difference here.
Term 4 is a busy one in terms of the final preparation to the Academic year and various ceremonies.
Please take note of these important dates for the term:

There is no such thing as a great talent without great will-power.
~Honore De Balzac (1799-1850)
I wish you and your families an amazing week, may the grace of God be with you.
Warm regards
Juriana Filmalter

REPORT BACK
Cultural Evening:
There was an error in the previous Newsletter under the Cultural Evening – the correct information
should have been:
Sibuko Dlamini received the Grantleigh Trophy for the Most improved student in Drama practical and
the Cultural Personality of the Year Award.
Emma Stallard received the trophy for the Most improved student in Art practical.
Sorry Sibuko and Emma.
Fire- fighting training for Grantleigh staff and students
Keith Eaton from Zululand Fire Control was on site Tuesday 8th
October to train the staff and student
representatives serving on our Health and Safety Portfolio Committee. Valuable training around the
causes and types of fires took place as well as instruction in the handling and effective use of the available
fire-fighting equipment. Occupational health and safety enjoys high priority at the school as we strive to
maintain a safe and hazard free learning and working environment.

Hi there,
Please pass this email on to the three outstanding pupils & parents/teachers involved in the White River
EV Challenge that recently visited our Solar Car Team…
Many thanks to you outstanding & inspirational scholars – it was wonderful to have you here, and I hope
you all enjoyed the visit as much as we did.
We have posted a recent blog-post from the visit (copied in below) from our website
(http://nmmusolarcar.co.za/), which also includes a link to a couple of photos that we took of your visit
down here.
The Solar Car team was recently visited by two teams that had recently participated in the recent White
River Rotary Club EV Challenge 2013. They were High School teams, Cyril Clarke High School from
Mataffin, Nelspruit in Mpumulanga and Grantleigh College from Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.
Hummer explains why he almost “…did a #1…” in the cockpit of the car on the first day of the Solar
Challenge
Both had performed outstandingly
in the latest White River EV
Challenge, and, as part of the
recognition of their excellent
work, were rewarded with a trip
that in part, lucky for us, included
a visit to the NMMU and the eLab
to view the solar car and to also
meet & spend time with the team.
Our guys took our enthusiastic
visitors through the development
and build of the solar car,
explaining the whole process in
detail, as well as showing them
around the many other projects
currently on the boil in the eLab.
Driver fitment for the SASC‟14 was going pretty well – let‟s hope that canopy doesn‟t stick like last time;
those parents weren‟t at all happy about not getting their kid back…
We also had a long sit-down
discussion with these intrepid,
bright young designers, who then
also gave us a lot of background
into their event, their vehicles &
their teams, and how they went
about the preparations to their
event. Fascinating stuff, and
good to see there was quite a lot
of commonality in the two
challenges – well done guys!
The whole happy group
together…
We were all mightily impressed I
can tell you, and hope we have
encouraged each other to strive
even higher next time around – hopefully you also went away from here with a longing to come back one
day as a full-time NMMU student, working on the solar car of course!
