Sticky Toffee Pudding Recipe

Cake ingredients 2ozs softened butter 6ozs caster sugar 8ozs plain flour 1tsp baking powder 1 egg 6ozs stoned dates (chopped) ½pt boiling water 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 1tsp vanilla essence Sauce ingredients 5ozs brown sugar 3ozs butter 4Tblspn double cream Method Cream butter and sugar together, sift flour and baking powder, beat the whisked egg into the butter and sugar with a little of the flour, continue beating for a minute, then add remaining flour. Flour dates lightly and chop finely, pour the boiling water over them. Mix in bicarb and vanilla essence, add this mixture to egg, sugar and flour mixture. Turn into buttered tin 11” x 7” (bottom lined with buttered greaseproof makes it easier to turn out) and bake for approx 40 mins (180C, 350F, Gas Mark 4) For toffee sauce coating, heat gently the brown sugar, butter and cream and simmer for 3 mins, pour over hot pudding and place under grill until it bubbles (the sauce burns easily). Serve hot with whipped cream. NB: The cake can be made in advance, freezes well too!

On Monday 1st February, Reception class travelled by coach to The Trafford Centre to BUILD-A-BEAR. All the children helped to make their bear, which is called Billy. They chose to dress him in pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers. Billy now lives in his very special house in the Reception classroom.

Fones4Schools is the UK's leading mobile phone recycling campaign for schools and groups. William Hulme's will receive £300 for every 200 phones collected. Please leave your old

GRADE ONE-A-THON

The Grade One-A-Thon entrants are all practising hard for their exam (especially Mr Mulholland), which will be on 15th April 2010. There is a notice board with details of those taking part by the stairs leading to the Main Hall. Anyone wishing to sponsor this event can send money and cheques (payable to WHGS but marked clearly with 'Grade 1-a-thon') to the Bursary or contact the individual participants.

CHINESE NEW YEAR

The Nursery class has been celebrating Chinese New Year. Miss Lee (our Year 5 teacher) came to visit the Nursery class and told them all about what would be happening in her house on the first day of Chinese New Year. The children all made their own dancing dragons and ended the day with a dragon dance in the classroom.

Languages and Food Technology Year 9 groups have recently enjoyed cross-curricular lessons with Languages and Food Technology. 9A2 watched Mrs Thomas demonstrate how to make egg fried rice in celebration of Chinese New Year. Miss Cunningham translated the ingredients, equipment and method into German as Mrs Thomas cooked. The pupils sampled the rice dish and even tried out using chopsticks! The pupils then made their own egg fried rice in their next Food Technology lesson. 9B2 have also been studying ‘food and cooking’ in their language lessons. As part of their learning they have watched the film ‘Ratatouille’ to help them recognise French words for ingredients and cooking skills. The pupils made delicious ratatouille dishes in their Food Technology lesson whilst Mr Hofton tested them on their French knowledge!

SKI TRIP T0 SERRE CHEVALIER, FRANCE FEBRUARY 2010

Staff and students left WHGS on Friday, 12th February to travel to France for the annual Ski Trip. After a long journey, they arrived in the beautiful resort of Serre Chevalier. Ski lessons started on the Sunday and the group was split by ability into Absolute Beginners, Advanced Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. Mr Richardson, who was unable to ski due to a sports injury, spent his days walking up and down the slopes helping the Beginners to stay on their feet! Various après-ski activities were enjoyed in the evenings. The ladies were treated to a spa session whilst the boys managed to watch a football match. Ice skating was also enjoyed by a number of staff and students, however, Mr MacCallum and Mrs Kerins will not be invited to perform on ‘Dancing On Ice’! The students would like to thank the staff who accompanied them on this excellent and very enjoyable trip!

WORLD BOOK DAY

The children in the Primary Phase were invited to come to school dressed as a character from a Roald Dahl book. We had a variety of Willy Wonkas, a stunning Aunt Spike, various Oompaloompahs, a Roly Poly Bird, Mr & Mrs Twit, Mike Teavee and an incredible Fantastic Fox! Yr 2 won the prize for the ‘best cheer’! Please look out for more photographs in our next edition!

C C F On Saturday, 27th February, 2010 the Combined Cadet Force was guests of Levenshulme British Legion and the Lord Mayor of Manchester. The CCF were publically thanked for the thousands of pounds it had raised over the last 10 years for the Poppy Appeal. CSM Warren Moore and CSgt Abi Bryant, our two heads of school, were presented with a framed certificate of thanks on behalf of the staff/students. Mr P Mulholland and Lt Col M P Jones also attended the event. It is a credit to the whole school that the CCF NCO’s/Prefects and all cadets and students over the years have raised so much money. Well done everyone!

YEAR 3 TRIP TO MANCHESTER MUSEUM

Year 3 enjoyed an action packed afternoon at Manchester Museum’s ‘Rocks Revealed’ workshop. We found out about the rock cycle through a fantastic drama session, created word banks, identified some amazing rocks and carried out a series of investigations. The afternoon was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by children, staff, parents and sixth form helpers.
