Over the next term the whole staff will be looking at the results in depth to ensure that we have a good understanding of our students‟ strengths and areas for further development. This will include setting targets for student achievement. Parents of Year 5 students in particular should be aware that because of our OC class, which make up 37% of the total number of Year 5 students, the school averages for Year 5 are higher than would be the case without the OC class. When we analyse Year 5 data we can look at the OC separately from the rest of Year 5 to get a clearer picture of both sets of students. If you have a question about the NAPLAN results, you should speak with the class teacher in the first instance. Remember that these tests were taken in early May and that students have made considerable progress in their learning since that time. The results to a large degree reflect learning PRIOR to Years 3 and 5 and represent a snapshot of some aspects of learning. Our school review was conducted last week by a team comprising school reps, a parent rep., two principals and Western Sydney Regional personnel. In the course of the review interviews were conducted with 15 staff, 12 parents and 48 students. There were observations of six lessons across all stages and programs such as Reading Recovery and peer tutoring. 149 surveys from staff, parents and students were considered. School policies, teaching programs, assessment data, student welfare referrals and communications to the community were all considered. Overall, the review team found that “teaching and learning is the core of the professional culture at Ironbark Ridge PS”. Recommendations include: The establishment, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of stronger links between the high school, school and pre-schools; Development of more effective internal communications; Teaching programs showing stronger alignment to the school management plan; and Evaluation of assessment practices across all Key Learning Areas.

Dear Parents and Friends,

Parents of students in Years 3 and 5 will by now have received copies of NAPLAN results for 2011. Overall our results are sound, especially in maths, spelling and writing. If you have a question about the NAPLAN results, you should speak with the class teacher in the first instance. Some of the achievements include:

Demonstrated passion and commitment to public education by the leadership team;

SASS highly valued by the whole school community;

A systematic approach to the collection of student literacy and numeracy achievement in the early years;

Staff, students and parents rightfully extremely proud of the school, its achievements and place in the wider community;

Students very confident, articulate and willing to participate in learning activities;

Positive influence of technology, especially interactive whiteboards, very evident;

Evidence that teachers know their students well and cater for their social needs in a caring environment.

The whole report will soon be published on our website. Congratulations to our Social Science T.O.M. team who finished second in the State at last weekend‟s final. Doris Mo, Michelle Kim, Banishri Suppiah, Bridgette Dirks, Jennifer Kang, Hannah Legge and Jasmine Lee and their facilitator, Mrs Cauchi were understandably very excited. Well done to all of our competitors in the Regional Athletics Carnival on Tuesday of this week. I believe that quite a few personal bests were achieved. Congratulations to Banishri Suppiah who will progress to State in the 800 metres. All students who have performed at the Hawkesbury Eisteddfod over the past week have done an absolutely fantastic job. Thank you to the teachers who have helped prepare the students and of course the parents.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

“LOVE BUBBLES”

“Love Bubbles” are not permitted at school. These items are not appropriate to bring to school as they can present a danger to students if they are swallowed or eaten. Furthermore, their presence at school has caused unnecessary conflict between students. We ask parents to enforce this ban with their children.

KINDY CAPERS

Thank you to all those people who have been completing homework this term. We have been very impressed with the effort put into homework each week. Homework will resume Week 1 next term.

Stage 1 Snippets

Hope this finds all Stage 1 families well and enjoying the best of Spring spirits. It hardly seems possible that another term has nearly passed us by. Week 10 promises to be another exciting fun filled week. Monday the 19th of September is Stage 1’s Products and Services Excursion to Aldi and McDonalds. Many thanks to Mrs Black for arranging such a great day. The last day for permission notes and money is Friday 16th of September. Remember to please tick the appropriate box so that your child gets their choice of meal and drink. School uniforms and hats need to be worn on the day.

Friday 23rd of September is the school’s walkathon. Students need to adorn themselves with silly socks and crazy hair. Sport uniforms and school hats should be worn. Following the walkathon all Stage 1 classes will be having a ‘HEALTHY PICNIC’ at school. Could students please come with a healthy lunch that they can assemble for the picnic. For example if your child is bringing a healthy sandwich could you please slice the bread, meat, salad and cheese so that they need only put it all together. Could each child also please bring a whole piece of fruit that teachers will be able to use to prepare a healthy snack in the

afternoon. No soft drinks allowed. Healthy beverage options, sunscreen and a bag or something to sit on are a must. In Term 4 Ironbark Ridge will be participating in the ‘Be Skilled, Be Fit’ sport program. Many thanks to all families that have returned permission notes and money. Could all outstanding notes kindly be returned to the office as soon as possible. Currently in Stage 1 we are encouraging all students to come to school properly equipped for learning. We are asking that students have lead pencils, a sharpener, an eraser (not the novelty or toy variety), a ruler, glue stick, scissors and a small set of coloured pencils. Huge pencil cases, novelty stationery and too many connector pens sometimes distract and are probably best kept at home. Once again many thanks to all parents and caregivers for your support this term. It has been greatly appreciated. We hope that you all have a very safe and happy weekend. Kind Regards, Stage 1 Teachers.

Stage 2 To cater for the wide range of mathematical understanding in our stage, next term we are trialling across stage groups for the number strand of mathematics. On Mondays and Tuesdays students will go to a group catering for their understanding in a variety of concepts. These groups will be formed after analysing data from diagnostic testing carried out in each class. During Term 4 we will be carrying out cultural studies, firstly as whole classes then students will select a country to study in a group. In science we will be looking at the Earth and weather. This will culminate in a Christmas / multicultural day where classes will bring food from the continent they have studied, perform dances and play games from their various countries. Congratulations to all students for their NAPLAN results. Teachers will be analysing results and have adapted programs where there is a need. Judy Burns

After winning the Western Sydney Regional Final for Tournament of the Minds, the Ironbark Ridge Social Science Team consisting of Doris Mo, Michelle Kim, Banishri Suppiah, Bridgette Dirks, Jennifer Kang, Jasmine Lee and Hannah Legge attended the NSW State Finals on Sunday 11

nd Place with Honours”.

It was an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with this team of bright, enthusiastic and respectful young ladies. Well done! Mrs Michelle Cauchi & Mrs Judy Burns

The final day for payment for the BE SKILLED BE FIT physical education program that we are running in Term 4 is next Wednesday 21

st October. This program is being delivered by the same company who ran

our very successful and enjoyable Commonwealth Games Day last year. The students are engaged and develop their fundamental movement skills in every lesson. The program meets all the curriculum outcomes of each stage. Students will be given an individual reports at the end of the program. There will be two staff provided for each class so that students can work in smaller groups and focus on skill development. The cost of the program is $35 per child for 10 weeks. Your child‟s session with be on a Monday or a Wednesday. Your child will have to wear their sports uniform on this day. Please find below a list of classes and the days that they will be participating in the program. We must have numbers confirmed by Wednesday as the first session will be MONDAY of the FIRST DAY BACK NEXT TERM. It is not fair on the office ladies who end up working frantically when the majority of notes and money are returned at the last minute. I am giving parents plenty of notice so that hopefully we can have a steady flow of notes returned. If you have any difficulties making this payment, please contact Mrs Therese Fox, School Administrative Manager who will be happy to assist you

Spring holidays

Building self esteem It‟s never too early to help build self-esteem and resilience in a child. Self-esteem builds a solid foundation for people to deal with life and the many challenges it can pose. The Department of Family and Community Services has a good publication on this subject, as well as more for grandparents who are caring for young children, step families, single parents and coping with grief. S.R.C Crazy Socks and Hair Walk-a-thon Ironbark Ridge Public will be holding a K-6 Walk-a-thon on Friday 23

rd September, 2011. There will be a

walking session in the morning and another session after recess. The fun theme for the Walk-a-thon is CRAZY HAIR and CRAZY SOCKS. Students are expected to wear their sports uniform, school hat and joggers but can accessorise with a crazy hairstyle and crazy socks. Students will need to be sun safe by wearing sunscreen and carry a water bottle. The Walk-a-thon will be a S.R.C fundraiser and all monies raised will go towards whole school initiatives and resources for the school. It is anticipated that all students will participate in the Walk-a-thon and contribute a minimum of $5.00. Students will need to return the permission slip, sponsor card and ALL money to the office no later than Wednesday 21

st September. Unfortunately, any student who doesn‟t return the permission slip and

minimum $5.00 will be unable to participate in this fundraising event. The Walk-a-thon should be a fun way to finish off a very busy Term 3 and we encourage all students to participate and support this Ironbark Ridge Public fundraising event. Only students and teachers are participating in this school event and it is not necessary for parents to attend as spectators. Thank you Mrs Nahirny and Mrs Walker

P & C PRESIDENT‟S REPORT

Thank you to those who attended last night‟s P&C meeting. It is good to know that there are so many parents interested in the goings on of the P&C. Over the last few weeks there have been a number of class contact emails going out. I apologise for the influx of emails however it is not always possible to get communication to you through other means. The main fundraising for the P&C is the canteen and uniform shop profits followed by fundraising. The Canteen raises net funds of approximately $30,000 p.a. At the P&C meeting last night the Canteen Committee provided us with an update of their situation. For term 4 the Canteen currently has 5 volunteers ….. a long way short of the required number of 40. It was decided last night that should the Canteen Committee be unable to form a FULL roster for term 4 the canteen will not reopen in term 4. This will mean that the canteen would be handed back to the school for tender. This process would occur during term 1 of 2012 and the canteen reopen in term 2 of 2012. I understand that a lot of parents work or have toddlers. If every family does one day a term this would fill our roster and allow us to operate five days a week. I urge you to consider volunteering, even for half a day, and allow us to keep the canteen in house. Please contact Jane if you are able to help. As a result of the uncertainty regarding the canteen, it was decided to put on hold the expenditure on a top path or a back gate. This will be revisited at the November meeting once a decision is made on the canteen operations. The fundraising committee has a number of fun activities coming up, Movie Nights, Bingo Nights, Woollies BBQ‟s and Camel Calendars. Please support where you can. Please also remember to bring in your Coles and Woolworths dockets and place them in the boxes in the office. Last year we exchanged our points for some great sporting equipment under the Coles program and this year we would love to do the same. Also a friendly reminder that if you buy anything at The Good Guys Castle Hill please ask for the school vouchers and bring them in to the office. These are accumulated over the year and are used to purchase items for classrooms such as cameras etc Please stop by the P&C page of the school website as it has recently been updated with new information including additions to the Parent Directory. If you can, please support the parents of our school in their businesses. Everything from fundraising notes, canteen price lists, minutes of meetings, constitution to uniform order forms will be in the P&C section of the website. Please make use of this website as much as possible to minimise extra work for the staff at the school. I will not be available for the first five weeks of Term 4 so any P&C related issues should go through Deanne in my absence. Thanks, Nicolle Greentree [email protected] 0411474677
