Dear East Woods Family and Friends,
Don’t let the details throw you. Take a moment to read through the following
paragraph:
"I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was
rdgnieg. Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, bceuase of
the phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mind, it deosn't mttaer in waht
oredr the ltteers in a wrod are. The olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist
and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and
you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn
mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe."
Isn’t that interesting? Somehow, our brains are capable of seeing the bigger
picture as long as the start and end are where they’re supposed to be. The same
is true in our journey with God, I think.
In the Revelation to John at the end of the New Testament, we read these words
from the Lord, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the
beginning and the end.” Rev. 22:13. That’s the BIGGER picture. We have a
God who has always been and always will be on the throne. And, He holds all
of the in-between details together in ways that are surprising and wonderful.
If we keep Christ on the throne of our lives, then the first and last, the
beginning and ending, are in their proper place. Even though God doesn’t give
us lives free of messes, and even though God hasn’t yet filled in every letter of
our story, we will eventually be able to make sense of the details and the order
of things in between. Not everything makes sense now, but there is a promised
day coming when all will be made clear. In my life, that gives me greater
comfort in the messes and helps me find greater joy and wonder in the details
along the way. I hope the same will be true for you.
Speaking of details, a lot of faithful East Woods people have been knee-deep in
details lately planning and coordinating important events. I want to offer a
huge thanks to Peggy Konzek and her team for facilitating another successful
Rummage Sale fundraiser. And, I want to thank Gwen Wagner, Peggy
McNees, and Conni Pfeifer for their work on the upcoming Food-Art-Music
(FAM) fundraiser. It is scheduled from 10AM-8PM on Saturday, August 18, and
I hope you’ll take some time to participate.

I also hope you’ll read through the details inside the newsletter regarding some
of the other great things happening during August, including the All-Church
Picnic on August 26.
It continues to be a joy and a privilege to serve as your pastor, to learn from
you, and to serve alongside you in ministry. May the presence of the One who
is the Alpha and Omega give life to each moment and detail of your journey,
this month and for each month ahead.
With joy ~ Bill
Youth

THE ANNUAL HABITAT FOR HUMANITY "RAISE THE ROOF" BENEFIT
BREAKFAST will take place on Thursday, September 6, from 7:30-8:30 AM
in the Vancouver Hilton Heritage Ballroom. Each year, this event brings
together Habitat staff, Habitat homeowner families, area business partners,
elected officials, donors and volunteers to celebrate and learn more about the
mission of Habitat for Humanity and its amazing impact on affordable housing
in Clark County. If you are interested in attending, contact Rich Helmke at

Family Promise of Clark County is a new nonprofit focused on helping
homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a
community-based response. More than 82% of the families we serve find
housing in less than nine weeks because of their intensive case management and
community support. And for every dollar invested, Family Promise returns $3 in
donated goods and services.
Family Promise needs $135,000 to fund its operation. East Woods Presbyterian
Church, one of the 13 local churches in the Clark County Family Promise
network is hosting an all-day fundraiser at its location on Saturday, August 18th
to help them achieve this goal.
The event called “FAM” for Food-Art-Music Festival will feature excellent
food options, amazing artisans, and an all-day lineup of great musicians and
music, featuring Jim Fischer at 2 pm. We will also have games and different
types of auctions for the whole family.
You can make a difference in the lives of many of our homeless families in Clark
Country. Invite your friends and family and join us for a fun, family-friendly
event at East Woods Presbyterian Church at 16210 NE 20th Street, Vancouver,
on Saturday, August 18th from10 AM to 8 PM.
Besides attending this event, we are looking for help to make it successful.
How can you help? Please consider the following:
Help volunteer with set up, take down, food-beverage-dessert service,
auction services during the event, runner, help where needed
Donate items for auction baskets: individual items or an entire basket
Donate items for live auction: dinners, hotel, getaway, spas, or things like
this
Finding a business sponsor that will match our funds made at the fundraiser
Any idea that we may not consider – please reach out to us with these ideas
If you are willing to help, please email Gwen or Peggy at the emails below. We
pray you will consider this. We need help, and we know some of you are
looking for ways to do this. Thank you!

MISSION
IT’S ALMOST TIME FOR BACK TO SCHOOL AT MILL PLAIN ELEMENTARY.
School starts the end of August and the kids and teachers need our help. They
have an ongoing need of shoes and snacks. The shoes can be gently used or
new, and the snacks can be bulk or individually wrapped. Other items of need
are Kleenex, toothpaste, soaps, feminine hygiene, etc. School supplies aren’t
necessarily needed, but would also be welcome, especially backpacks and
paper. A more complete list of needs is on the table above the Mill Plain bin in
Evergreen Hall (Narthex); please put your donations there. All donations are
greatly appreciated. Contact Conni Pfeifer 360-281-5368 with any questions.
