WATCH OUT FOR FALSE ALARMS
The Town of Brome Lake Fire Department has had to respond to sev-
eral unfounded fire alarms in 2017. These interventions create im-
portant costs for taxpayers.
You should know that Article 76 of our Municipal By-law
2016-05 on Fire Safety states: « In the event of a defect
or malfunction of an alarm system, or when it has been
unnecessarily triggered, the user is subject to the pay-
ment of costs incurred by the municipality. » These
costs include the fees of labour and the use of equip-
ment and vehicles, as well as the actual expenses in-
curred for the goods and services required from a third
party, such as a locksmith or a security agent.
Here are a few tips to help reduce false alarms: Have
your alarm system and all of its components verified to ensure its prop-
er functioning. When absent, and especially if there is construction or
renovation work being done, deactivate your alarm system and ad-
vise your alarm company when you deactivate and reactive your sys-
tem. When absent, and if other people are present in your home, en-
sure that all know the alarm code.
You should also validate with your alarm company the procedure to
cancel an alarm and the allow delay before the fire service is called.
We ask that you take the necessary means in order
to ensure that additional false alarms do not occur.
In the event that you were to not comply, we will
be obligated to apply the By-law and the
invoice will be sent to you without further
notice or delays.
