1 Newsletter July 2019 Colneis Junior School Colneis Road Felixstowe Suffolk IP11 9HH Tel: 01394 284052 Fax: 01394 273425 [email protected] www.colneisjunior.co.uk Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome to the final newsletter of the academic year - it has certainly been another exciting and busy year across both our schools and I am sure the children are ready for a well deserved summer holiday. On a personal note, I would like to say a huge thank you to you all for the way in which you have supported and engaged with our schools during my first year here. I genuinely think I have the best job in the world and I am looking forward to continuing to work with you all next year. We have a number of staff leavers at the end of this term. Mrs Tel Davies, Mrs Hammond, Miss Norman, Miss Bailey and Mrs Smith will all be leaving us for new challenges ahead. On behalf of the whole school community I would like to pass on our sincere thanks for all their hard work in giving our wonderful children such great experiences. We will miss them all, but I am sure they will keep in touch with us. We also have a number of new joiners that you will see elsewhere in this newsletter and again I know you will give them a warm welcome. We are delighted to also announce that Mrs Comber will be taking on the Nursery Manager role to support our ever-growing Nursery provision at Fairfield; she will continue to work closely alongside Mrs Simmons, our Early Years Lead, in developing this part of our school. The summer holiday is also the time where we undertake larger project work on our premises - and this summer is no different. Across both schools we have a range of projects taking place - amongst other things we are creating a new 'Thrive' room at Fairfield to replicate the one we currently have at Colneis. We will explain more about how the Thrive approach works to you in September, but it is a fantastic programme in supporting children's emotional health and wellbeing. At Colneis we will be installing a MUGA (multi use games area) on the school field that will really enhance our ability to deliver high quality PE and sport. We are also investing in new interactive whiteboards for some of our classrooms. You will also see an upgrade to our phone systems where finally you will be able to leave messages, particularly for children's absences, rather than waiting to get through to someone. We are also delighted to announce that we are working in an increasingly closer partnership with Premier Sports and from September will have a full time sports coach working across both schools. Alex Burman will be working with us from Monday to Thursday and will work on a number of different sports and activities. This will help us not only with the competitions and tournaments that we enter but in increasing participation for all children, including at lunchtimes as well. Miss Gemma Howard is a performing arts specialist and will be working across our schools on a Friday, allowing us to really develop this area of the curriculum as well. We recently had a whole Federation panoramic photo taken, the organisers were incredibly impressed with the children's behaviour during this - they were a real credit to yourselves and the school. More information will be available soon on how you can purchase a copy. Finally, we are introducing a new behaviour policy across both schools from the autumn term and will make this available to parents in September. Alongside this, and using the outcomes from the parental survey we sent out with reports, we will establish our new School Development Plan. There will be opportunities for you to discuss this further with us in the new academic year. Wishing you all a restful and happy summer break. Kodu Day

Charlie Skye Maxwell and Gordon represented Colneis at The Felixstowe Schools Kodu Day which took place at Causton Junior on 8th July

Kodu is a simple visual programming language which can be used to teach creativity problem solving storytelling as well as programming

The day was split into two halves with the children being introduced to Kodu and some key concepts and ideas in the morning followed by solving a few small-scale challenges using Kodu In the afternoon the children competed in teams to create Kodu games which were judged by Brendan Routledge who ran the day

We had to make a game with at least three programmed Kodus (sprites) and two levels and we both made racing games Kodu was a new game for us and we found it really enjoyable said Charlie Skye Max and Gordon

Were glad you all had such a good day and well done for representing the school so well

Fun at Mersea What a great time Year 6 experienced at their recent residential trip to Mersea Despite the rain and wind the children thoroughly enjoyed the challenges they faced and were a credit to both the school and to their parents

Year 4 Trip to The Museum of East Anglian Life On Thursday 6th June Year 4 visited the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket as part of their Food and Farming topic We spent the day finding out about life in the countryside in the past We discovered all sorts of jobs that would be associated with farming communities such as basket maker cooper blacksmith wheelwright and brick maker We looked at machinery from the past and learnt about the way farming has changed We visited the water mill to add to what we had already learnt about milling and even got the chance to feed some of the farm animals and learn about where the different breeds came from We had a super day

4

On Wednesday 19th June Mrs Churchyard and Miss Spurgeon accompanied five girls and five boys from Year 6 to an NRICH mathematical curiosity and resilience day at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge After a very early start we were joined on the bus by pupils and staff from Trimley St Mary and made our way to Cambridge We were met with drinks and snacks before an introduction (and a problem to think about) by the NRICH staff We were then divided into groups for three different workshops which we then rotated around Some of the activities were based on games that needed strategic thinking as well as mathematical problem solving skills to win Our pupils threw themselves into each activity with enthusiasm and proved that they were indeed excellent mathematical thinkers They enjoyed their experience and the chance to visit the University and hopefully it will encourage them to see a future involving further study of maths

On the morning of Tuesday 11th July fifteen Year 5 pupils along with Mrs Churchyard took part in an NRICH maths webinar for 9 ndash 13 year olds Before the webinar started we were excited to see schools logging in from around the UK as well as Germany and Bahrain Once we got started we were given a problem to work on involving totals of three consecutive odd numbers The pupils had time to begin to notice some different patterns occurring in their totals before questions were answered and some ideas from other schools was shared We were then asked to try and explain why some of the patterns occurred and begin to ask further questions which could be investigated Our pupils engaged enthusiastically with the problem noticing all sorts of patterns and trying to explain their thinking in a way someone else could understand clearly We went on to think about consecutive even number totals as well as totals of four or five numbers After the webinar we continued to try and put these ideas together and hope to submit them as the problem is still open for solution on the NRICH website

Maths News Some staff from Colneis and other Felixstowe primary schools have been working with the NRICH project which is run by the University of Cambridge The NRICH project aims to Enrich and enhance the experience of the mathematics curriculum for all learners Develop mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills Offer challenging inspiring and engaging activities Show rich mathematics in meaningful contexts Work in partnership with teachers schools and other educational settings to share expertise

Some of our pupils have also been involved recently

Year 2 Beach Trip

The children in Year 2 had a wonderful day preparing picnics and visiting the beach and Spa Gardens Activities included a treasure hunt searching for key features in the Spa Gardens and answering questions about each one creating Andy Goldsworthy inspired art along the beach and identifying human and physical features of the surrounding area We were particularly impressed with the childrenrsquos behaviour on the day and we were glad to see how much they enjoyed it It was a beautiful day with the sun shining and many happy faces

Sports Day ndash Mindfulness One of our many activities on Sports day was a mindfulness activity searching for lsquotreasuresrsquo The objective of the task was for the children to look closely at their surroundings and look for objects that they considered special or a lsquotreasurersquo The children could only select items that would fit inside their raisin box so they had to think carefully The discussions that followed about our different lsquotreasuresrsquo were lovely and made the children think about what makes one personrsquos lsquotreasurersquo can be another personrsquos waste A really thoughtful activity

Victorian Day in Year 1

As part of the Year 1 curriculum the children are invited to travel back in time to spend the day as a Victorian pupil Itrsquos a memorable day for both the staff and pupils as they immerse themselves in Victorian style lessons and traditions

The children started the day with a register of their Victorian names followed by drill (PE lesson) on the playground In the morning they completed poetry spelling mathematics and handwriting lessonsmdashin silence

During the afternoon they enjoyed a hokey-pokey ice-cream a black and white film Victorian games and they made Punch and Judy puppets

We were very impressed in the way they took part in all the activities planned and we hope that it remain a positive memory in their learning experience

The children created Victorian Punch and Judy puppets
