The Firestone High School Madrigal Singers

The Madrigal Singers are one of six choral ensembles taught at the Akron School of the Arts at Firestone High School. This ensemble consists of advanced singers who excel in sight-reading, vocal technique and musicianship. They are chosen based on academic and character references and perform all a’ cappella literature without an adult director.

The Madrigal Singers have represented Akron at local, state and national level professional conferences, as well a private functions including weddings and funerals.

The director, Mr. Chad Pitman, is a graduate of Baldwin Wallace University. He has received numerous awards for outstanding work in music education/performance and been invited to serve as guest conductor for many school and community choral ensembles in northeast Ohio.

The Madrigal Singers have been performing at Akron SPE holiday gatherings for many years. Join us on December 5 at the Taverne in Richfield to brighten your holiday spirit.

Councilor’s Corner

Council Bullet Points

Membership total is currently 21,047 (which includes e-members).

Membership dues should be increased to $155 starting January 1, 2017 (with the opportunity to renew at current rates until 12/31/2016). Unlike most other societies, SPE has not increased dues in many years and its membership price is currently at the very low end of the market spectrum.

At the Indy Council meeting, a motion was made and approved to change the Rebate structure to a simple pass-through support structure. These changes to Article 15 reflect this.

First, eliminated 14.7.11 SPE Europe Board per motion from the Indy Council meeting.

EXL Center at The University of Akron has just informed us of an up-coming event that is planned by Launch League in Akron led by Courtney Gras. Courtney was an Engineer from U of A – Electrical. She founded a company while in college -- Design Flux.* She is currently working for NASA at Glenn and is running Launch League at age of 28. She is on the Forbes list of 30 under 30 in the US!! Check out the website.

They are preparing for this big event the first weekend in December called Flight. It is a Start Up Conference (http://www.launchleague.org/flight/) that may be of specific interest. Flight helps scalable startups in the Midwest showcase their work, connect with investors and cofounders, and boost their success rate through educational speaker tracks.

Please make sure that your society members are aware of this great Ohio networking event.

*About DFTstrategy + progress + leadershipDesign Flux Technologies, LLC is a spin-out company from the University of Akron, and was co-founded by two Electrical Engineering students in 2011. Frustrated with the complexity and discontinuity in energy storage systems, these two students surrounded themselves with a team of experienced business advisors, engineering professors and other colleagues to formulate a new paradigm in power management. The result of these efforts was the conceptualization of Cognicell: the first software-defined solution to the complex power management ecosystem.

Present: Tom McQuaide, Viv Malpass, Marcos Pantoja , David Schultz, , John Fellenstein, Nicole Brostowitz, Sahil Gupta, Keith Pelfrey ,Gary Taylor including PESO representatives- Anisa Cobaj, Tzu Yu Lai and Ashrita NallapaneniAbsent: Bob Weiler, Kevin Cavicchi, Kevin Malpass, Tony Dean, Joe Mattingly , and Bob Wegelin

Bob Weiler- not present but has included below Agenda and items for review and discussion

Minutes from October 3, 2016 were reviewed and approved.

President’s ReportI have attached a draft of our goals for 2016/2017. Please provide feedback and see if we can add a few more action steps to the goals.Cleveland Section has asked that we consider increasing the section meeting prices. They do not have a treasury and they are having difficulty handling the meeting losses. (Personally, I think breaking even is a good idea as well)We need to add a couple more BOD members. Please be on the lookout for new potential BOD members.STILL to review - Vinyl Div is looking for a section to host the 2019 Vinyltec. Newark NJ section has decided to give up their standing every 3 year rotation. We are now scheduled for 2021. Because of last year’s success we should have a good shot at claiming 2019. Cleveland section is also lobbying to get the 2019 Vinyltec. It is doubtful that Vinyl Section would have Vinyltec in Cleveland in 2019 and Akron in 2021. No decision needed until May, but I would like to start the discussion so I know how to steer the Vinyl Div.

• Do we want to go for the 2019 opening?• Do we want to offer to partner with Cleveland Section?

Tom McQuaide started off meeting by welcoming ALL including PESO representatives.

Akron Section Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation

1-16

The Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation operates exclusively for the benefit of and to carry out the purposes of the Akron Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, which is to promote scientific and engineering knowledge relating to plastics by making educational scholarship grants to deserving students in the field of plastics engineering and related subjects. The Organization is supported primarily by contributions from the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers, the Society's individual members and corporations like yours affiliated with the polymer industry.

Since the inception in 1988, the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation has grown to its current position through the hard work of many volunteers and the generosity of the local business community. Over the twenty-seven years that the foundation has been in existence, it has provided scholarships to over 250 young men and women totaling in excess of $320,000 to assist them in furthering their careers in the polymer industry.

Our goal is to continue to grow the assets of the Foundation in order to increase the number of scholarships awarded, as well as the size of the awards, and to do so in perpetuity. In doing this, we hope to be able to contribute to the supply of well-trained individuals to support the growth of the polymer industry in the Northeast Ohio area today and well into the future.

When the Foundation began its fund raising activities in 1988, we offered those companies who contributed $30,000 a scholarship in their name. To date we have five named scholarships, Newell/Rubbermaid, Goodyear, Ken Sharp Memorial and Jim Steiner Memorial scholarships. We are asking your company to help with the growth of well-trained individuals in the local polymer industry. Please print this page, fill out the information and mail it to Bob Wegelin, 13206 Kaufman Ave. NW Hartville, OH 44632.
