Production Update

Production News

Cast members of ‘Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ have been working hard in rehearsals with Mrs Vercoe, Miss Pitts, Mr Sourgen and Mrs Stubs. All the songs have been rehearsed ahead of a busy but exciting time in Term 3 as the production team and cast work towards performing on 14th and 15th September.

Please read the following important notes about Term 3 rehearsals – by doing this you can help your student to be prepared and at their best for the performances:

In Term 3 ALL cast members are required at both rehearsals, Tuesday and Wednesday, 3.30 UNTIL 5.30PM – please note the change in finish time.

There will be a Saturday rehearsal in August (date to confirmed but most likely will be 19th or 26th August) so that cast members can enjoy some expert singing tuition from Mr Philip Johnston and extra rehearsal training.

Week 9 of Term 3 will be important as it is performance week. Your students will find that they will have a different class timetable that week as time is given over in the school day to prepare for the two performances. This will include a Full Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday 13th September 3.30pm-5.30pm.

We are looking for some items to be loaned for the performances from anyone in the school community who can provide them. Listed below are some items required at this stage for the community events planned on performance nights:

Floor rugs and carpets – especially Persian type designs, but other types will be useful too.

Large cushions (preferably in bright colours)

Fire pits (small and free-standing)

Outdoor fairy lights (solar powered would be even better)

Thankyou in anticipation of your assistance to help make ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ a success.

Parent Page Over the last few weeks I have had a number of parents and staff talk to me about helping children develop good sleeping patterns. I have seen that this can become a challenge with children and since becoming a new parent myself, understand the difficulty that comes with this. I have been looking, for myself, ways to assist my child in developing a healthy and regular sleeping patterns.

This article I came across during my search and believe that it will assist you. Like all parenting information, adapt this to your child and see what works for your situation. My hope is that this will be helpful to what can be a very stressful time.

Ways to Set Good Sleep Habits in Your Child We all know that good sleep habits are important for children. But parents' busy work schedules, after-school activities, and homework can all cut into family time on school nights and can have a big impact on how much a child sleeps.

Given the fact that time together for so many households starts at around 6 or 7 o'clock or even later in the evening on a school night, it can be tough to set an early bedtime.

And since experts say school-age children roughly need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep -- which means they need to go to bed around 8 or 9 o’clock, depending on what time they need to get up -- that doesn’t leave much time for anything besides dinner, homework and reading one short book chapter together.

But it can be particularly important for grade-schoolers to get enough shut-eye. How much a child sleeps can have a big impact on her growth and development. Research has shown that lack of sleep can affect a child’s temperament, behavior, alertness, and ability to learn. Children who do not get enough sleep have been shown to perform more poorly on memory and attention tests. An April 2009 study found that sleep problems in the grade-school years were linked to poor scores on mental tests when the children reached adolescence.

So what can you do to make sure your child sleeps enough to function at his best?

Try these tips to help your child develop good sleep habits and sleep well every night.

Routines for Better Sleep Habits 1. Stick to a routine. A good bedtime routine is essential when it comes to instilling good sleep habits in kids. A bath,

pyjamas, brushing teeth and a few pages from a book -- whatever your night time ritual is, be sure to stick to it consistently so

that your child knows what to expect and can easily move through every routine efficiently each night.

2. Limit the electronic stimulants. Don’t let your child use the computer, check their phone, or watch TV at least an hour before

bedtime. These electronic screen activities can be stimulating and can interfere with falling and staying asleep.

3. Keep her room comfortable for sleeping. Make sure your child's room isn't too hot, too stuffy, or too bright. (If your child is afraid of the dark, choose a night light that will keep her room as dim as possible.) Bedrooms that are quiet, dark and cool are

optimal for a good night’s rest.

4. Set aside extra time for catching up. If your grade-schooler has younger or older siblings, be sure you give each child individual time with each parent. (To save time, you can switch off with your partner and alternate dad and mom time on each

night.)

5. Curb the sneaky caffeine. You wouldn’t let your grade-schooler down a cup of coffee before bed. But caffeine can also lurk in foods and drinks you may not suspect such as chocolate, bottled tea, and even some non-cola sodas. Watch for foods that

contain caffeine and if your child asks for dessert, stick to healthy fruit when it's close to bedtime.

6. Watch your child instead of the clock. How much your child needs to sleep can vary depending on his individual needs.

Some kids may do just fine on 8 hours of sleep while others need a solid 10 or more. Look for signs of sleep deprivation such as hyperactivity, crankiness, and memory or concentration problems. If you see these signs, get your child to bed early, take steps to banish fights over bedtime, and be consistent about bedtime routines every night.

Early Learning News

Did you know that at kinder we get out of our own yard every day? We love having our own space where we feel safe and secure but once all the school children have gone to class we escape the confines of our yard and go out every day. Every Wednesday we go to the library and have a story then borrow books and with-out fail we walk around the school exploring our bigger space on our “kinder bus”. We walk as if on a bus with a front of the bus, middle of the bus and back of the bus in bus like formation. We often go back via the trip trap wooden bridge in the sensory play ground, past the chickens and then off for a play on the big kids playground. We will duck back into our own yard to grab some of our own toys like a bucket of balls, or “Eddie and Avary” our bouncy friends to race and bounce across the junior yard.

“Eddie and Avary” races

Tossing leaves we have scrapped up

Every Thursday we go for exploratory walks around our neighbourhood. We have walked to the local park for a play, we have seen police cars, cross walk signs, Bendigo Creek and bridges over it and the trams. How does this benefit our learning? We are identifying print with meaning which is part of our pre reading skills, we count objects and find numbers that go into the hundreds. We are aware of what changes from week to week in our environment from autumn leaves changing to bare trees in winter. Some of the things we see and find make their way back into our play at kinder. We have made buses and bus stops, which has led to our writing our own lists, which helps us take turns. The leaves and sticks we find become art works or pretend camp fires to cook pretend marshmallows. The last week of term we went for a tram ride through town which in turn produced more learning.

Early Learning News We have been to see Mrs. Vercoe for music, had Ms. McKinnon come and teach us a song and been up to the gymnasium for a bounce on the big mats when it’s been too wet to get out. Next term we are looking forward to joining junior chapel on a Tuesday morning some weeks. We love being part of a bigger space so look out for us as we get out and about each day.

Year 8 Foods and Health As part of their catering and entertaining unit, Year 8s recently prepared and served a luncheon to our lovely office ladies, while Mrs Maxwell handled the front desk!

Captiv8 Day

Recently the Year 8 students participated in their third Captiv8 Day, this time with a Science focus. We travelled to LaTrobe University to take part in a lab workshop investigating a range of cells under a microscope. Part of the workshop was spent learning how to prepare our own wet mount slides. Our task was then to create a labelled 3D model of a human or plant cell, using a bowl of jelly as the cytoplasm and assorted confectionery as the various organelles. We also participated in a Forensic Frenzy workshop, where we examined and tested evidence in order to solve a crime. We had a very busy and fun-filled day!
