MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Newsletter 09 February 2018

This half term we have welcomed several new members of teaching staff to Ernulf Academy; Ms Karpathiou, Mrs Alford, Mr Howell, Mrs Haigh-Smith and Mr Schleising. Additionally, four new Teaching Assistants joined the team; Mrs Ali, Mrs Buckham, Mrs Wells-Haggis and Miss Patterson. Finally, two new Administration Assistants joined the School Office; Mrs Jackson and Mrs

Reyaz.

We wish Mrs Howell well who has left us after 19 years and wish her well for the future. She has supported many students during her time with the learning support

department and will be missed.

Year 11 Destination Interviews have now been completed. All students had an interview to ensure that they have plans in place for post-16 and to determine their next steps. Staff involved have been very impressed with the thoughtful approach students have taken towards this. The majority have had clear ideas

about what they want to do next year and what they need to do. It has also been very encouraging to hear how hard many of the students have been working both in school and at home in preparation for the examinations in the summer. Next half term there will be interviews for those who have applied

to the sixth form.

We received the excellent news that the Edexcel Awarding Body has recognised the school as a “centre of high integrity” in Business Studies BTEC. This is something which only happens very rarely across the UK and is a comment on the high level of consistency and accuracy of assignment marking over a substantial period of time. Our congratulations go

to Mr Cook, who leads Business Studies.

Year 9 students have started the process of choosing their Options. Students and their parents attended an Options Evening on 01 February to find out more about the courses on offer and the

process. Students will be given support, guidance, information and time to ensure

that they make appropriate choices.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Deputy Head Boy :

Hello, my name is Ethan Sydes, and I am proud to have been picked for the role of Deputy Head boy. Under this role, I have helped out back stage at parental consultation evenings and I have helped make improvements around the school with the Ernulf Academy Student Council. Next year I plan to go to St. Neots

Sixth Form College to do A-levels.

Whilst at Ernulf I have enjoyed completing my Duke of Edinburgh

Bronze award, and I have almost completed my Silver award.

When outside of school I like to play tennis.

Deputy Head Girl:

I am Roya and I am a very keen student and enjoy my subjects, one of the main subjects I am passionate about is Music. Currently we are focussing on making our own concert as part of our scheme of work, I very much enjoy the performance part to Music. I was lucky enough to perform

at the end of year Awards Assembly.

I am also very engaged in drama and partook in the schools production of Hairspray. It was a great experience

and I gained new friendships. As a prefect, I get many privileges to participate in school yearbook teams. I am in charge of design which I enjoy. I am also involved with school charity work and Student Voice at Ernulf which makes you feel

TOILET TWINNING FUNDRAISING In the lead up to Christmas Mrs Thatcher launched a Charity

event to Twin our Toilets!

1 in 3 people across the world don’t have somewhere safe to

go to the toilet and bad sanitation is one of the world’s

biggest killers! The worst affected are women, children, old

and sick people and sadly, every minute, a child under the

age of five dies because of dirty water and poor sanitation.

Around half the people in the world have an illness caused by

bad sanitation! Toilet Twinning (through Tearfund) works with

communities in some of the poorest and most affected areas

to provide education and support, with the end result being

the community building a toilet together. For more information

go to: https://www.toilettwinning.org/

Tutor groups were in competition to raise as much as they

could. There were some wonderful events organised, for

example bake sales, sponsored silences and pie the teacher

(well done to Mr Day for having a face everyone wanted to

splat!), but the winning tutor group were 8PU, whose fantastic

fundraising saw them raise enough to twin two toilets by

themselves!

There were some wonderful individual fundraisers, for

example Callum and Kenzie who everyone was happy to pay

to keep quiet, as well as Peggy who also silently raised a

huge sum of money. Barney raised money at his rugby club.

Mason, Ben, Ben and Sekinat ran a bake sale and raised a

significant amount for 10BC and there were other individuals

who also donated significant amounts of money to support this

event.

The total raised was £1080, which was a fantastic result and

means that we have been able to twin 14 toilets and a school

block. This will help lots of people make positive changes in

their lives. Well done to all involved.

CAMPS INTERNATIONAL Ernulf Academy has partnered with Camps International, once again, to offer students in Years 10 and 11 the opportunity to go on a life-changing 4-week expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua during the summer of 2019. This expedition will allow students to live alongside rural communities and work on projects helping build communities, or combating deforestation. Students will also undertake an adventure element, and this year we have chosen a PADI Open Water

Scuba Diving course.

Students have started organising events to raise funds for this

upcoming expedition. Here is a plea from one of our students:

Hello my name is Tom Wilkinson. I am writing this as I am

planning to do a sponsored 165 mile bike ride with two

friends over the course of a weekend on 03 and 04 March

2018. We are doing this to raise money towards an

expedition to Costa Rica and Nicaragua. This is a once in a

lifetime opportunity for me and while I am out there I shall be

helping out with building foundations for schools and helping

out with local wildlife preservation. However, this trip comes at

a cost of £4080 and the only way I can source this is through

fundraising and sponsors etc this is all part of the project and

the experience. If anyone would be willing to sponsor me

appreciated and would help a lot with my ambitions.

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING With the cold weather upon us there may be the possibility

of school closure. The School will only close in exceptional

circumstances and the decision will be made before the start

of the school day.

We will post notifications on the school website, on our

Facebook page. The Local Authority will also publish

academies closures information on its website

[email protected] and

finally, the following local radio stations will be notified:

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

Heart Radio 103 and 102.7

Star 107 FM Radio.

SPOTLIGHT ON... ENGLISH On Friday 02 February

some Year 7 & 8 students

and I went to Potton Middle

School to meet a poet

called Neal Zetter. While

we were there, Neal asked

us to create a superhero of

our own so we could write a

poem about it later. Meanwhile, we were put into pairs and

between our pairs we had to think of 100 adjectives to

describe a book. They could be about the story, the

appearance of the book or the feel of the book. The majority

of the class managed to achieve 100 words in the time.

After break, we had to write

a ‘Kenning Poem’ about our

superheroes that we had

created earlier. Mine was

about a mind reader called

‘Mind Intruder’. Later on, we

were put into groups of 4. In

our groups we were all given

a different subject, some of the subjects were animals or

food. Our group’s subject was on the colour blue. We were

given half an hour to write the poem and ten minutes to

practice and create some actions for the poem.

After everyone had finished their poems, we had to perform

them. One of my favourites was a poem by a different group

and was called ‘Mud or Poo’. I liked it because the actions

were interesting and related to the poem, it was funny and

made the class laugh. I enjoyed meeting Neal Zetter and

meeting the other pupils from the different schools. Also, I

loved creating and performing the poems. I learnt lots of new

things including the ‘Kenning Poem’ which I had never heard

of before.

The Music Department is delighted to welcome Agust Sweinssohn, drum tutor to Ernulf. Tobey Dore, Mickey Macey, Declan Walton and Archie Palmer enjoyed their first drum lesson this week and learned technique, a basic three part rhythm and a fill. Well done lads!

Well done to Year 7 students who completed their Make A Set of Panpipes Home Learning Task. Some excellent fully working panpipes were produced showing the use of recycling, and how to produce different pitch. The task ties in to the

Unit of work that focuses on Latin American Music.

SAFARI STU

On Wednesday 07 February SEN and Cabin students were visited by 'Safari Stu' a local Animal Ranger. This educational visit was designed to provide a 'hands on' close encounter experience with variety of animals including

reptiles, invertebrates and mammals.

POETRY LIVE

FOCUS ON… LIBRARY

On Thursday 08 February 35 Year 11 students attended this year’s Poetry Live event at Cambridge Corn Exchange. I had

the greatest pleasure to attend the event with the Year 11s.

The Poets responded to student questions and discussed how poems connect to and influence other poems. The day was split into sessions. The first session looked at how students might deal with unseen poems in the exam, both how to think about them and how to write for the best possible results. The second session looked at comparing poems, whether they are studied poems or unseen, and how to write most effectively in either situation. The sessions have proved invaluable to students’ thinking in the past and are an outstandingly

successful aspect of GCSE Poetry Live!.

The students were an asset to the school! It was an absolutely wonderful experience. We sat at the front row within yards of poets such as Gillian Clarke, Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage and John Agard. Not only did each poet read their

poems, but they performed them dramatically as well, we

were all totally enthralled!

John Agard was the last poet, but certainly not the least to perform for us. He had us all repeating the words of his poems, we enjoyed every moment, he was an incredibly

funny and entertaining individual!

Ms D. O'Hara

A lot has been happening in the library this academic year. We have built up new collections of graphic and manga novels, which are proving very popular with many students. These can range from the well-known Marvel and DC series, to the BBC’s Doctor Who, animated Shakespeare, classics such as Dickens and Bronte to the harrowing ‘Complete Maus’,

which tells the story of the Holocaust.

When added to the more conventional fiction, which has also seen a boost of much-needed new stock, this means there have been over 400 new books added so far this school year, with another 250 ‘waiting in the wings’ to be added in the

coming weeks and months.

The graphic and manga novels can be borrowed one at a time for a period of one week. ‘Regular’ fiction and non-

fiction have loan periods of three weeks.

Of course none of this is any use if you can’t find the books, and this has also changed over the past few months, hopefully

to make life a little easier.

There are two ways that you can find what we have in the library from anywhere. The first is by the academy website at ernulf.cambs.sch.uk Clicking on the information button at the top left of the page will open up a further page where you can see a link titled ‘library book search’. This will take you to the page on the right, which shows a constantly refreshing page of top ten resources, recent returns, newly added stock, book of the week (computer generated), trending subjects and authors, and suggested reading with a short synopsis of

each book.

If we don’t have a particular book that you would like to read, if you do exactly the same on the Longsands website, and the book you want is in stock at Longsands, I can lend the

book between libraries for you to read.

The second way to search the library stock is via an app, which is available for android and ios devices for free, called IMLS. This works in exactly the same way as the website catalogue, but is obviously more portable. Note that the first time you use it you will have to select the Ernulf library to make it relevant. You can search for particular authors or subjects, or simply see what has recently been returned to the library by others. If you ask me in the library, I can also set up your account so you

can check what you have on loan and see

when your books are due for return.

Do come in and see how the library has changed, and browse through the stock – new and old. Most importantly, if you borrow a book and are not enjoying it, bring it back and find another. Reading should be for

pleasure.

YEAR 9 OPTIONS

Ernulf Academy has set up a new sports leadership

programme for selected students in Year 9 and Year 10.

Through this programme the Sports leaders will be involved in a number of PE based projects to develop their leadership skills, including helping to run sports events and delivering PE sessions. The students will be awarded a Level 2 Sports Leadership qualification, upon successful completion of the

programme.

Our leaders have recently been designing and delivering high quality sport and Physical Education sessions to Year 5 students. This has been done working in partnership with Winhills Primary Academy, where our leaders are providing

an hour of PE lessons per week over a 4-week cycle.

The leaders have worked in small teams to design their lesson plans, and have delivered the sessions with great success. The feedback from Year 5 students has been extremely positive.

It is going to be a busy time for these fantastic leaders!

For more information on the sports leaders program, please

contact Mr Bond.

As you can see from the picture, Tilly-May, Zoe, and Angel

started us off with a fantastic netball session!

Over 160 students and parents joined Ernulf staff for the Year 9 Options Evening on Thursday 01 February. This was an ideal chance for staff and students to discuss the structure of the courses on offer and so aid the decision

making process.

This year we are offering our widest ever choice of qualifications including

several subjects that are new to Ernulf.

So whether you are looking to study Music, Business, Sport, ICT or Catering

there is a BTEC available for you.

Alternatively for those wanting to follow a more academic route Geography, French and History represent excellent

possibilities.

The Options Evening was just the first in a series of events designed to support students with their choices. After the half term all of Year 9 students will have an Options Guidance Talk with a senior member of staff, as well as the chance to try out some GCSE style lessons in a

range of subjects.

Good luck to Year 9 with their choices - remember the deadline is 07 March

2018.

SPORT RELIEF Ernulf Academy is again proud to support the Sport Relief

2018 fundraising campaign. The Sport Relief week is back by

popular demand!

To raise funds the PE department are organising Staff v

Students sporting challenges from Monday 19th March

through to Thursday 22nd March 2018 during lunchtimes in

the lead up to the main event. Early whispers from the PE

team suggest that the volleyball and netball matches are

back on the agenda! More details of the challenges will be

released in due course.

On Friday 23 March 2018 is Sport Relief day. The good

news is that the Ernulf Sport-a-thon is back!! In previous years

this has been a highly successful fundraising event, and this

year we are hoping to smash all previous records. Please

keep an eye on the PE department Twitter feed as more

details of this event, and the Staff v Student challenges, are

released.

PE FIXTURES AND EVENTS

On Thursday 25 January 2018 Ernulf

Academy entered an under-13 (Year 8)

team into the 2018 School Games Level

2 Handball championships. The

t o u r n a m e n t w a s h o s t e d b y

Hinchingbrooke School, and the

competition winners would qualify to

represent Huntingdonshire schools in the

next round of competition.

Following a ’crash’ course in the rules of

Handball, our intrepid squad of 9 took

to the road full of confidence. How

would they get on?

Upon arrival at the venue our squad

quickly undertook their warm-up,

including some time to practice the

defensive and attacking formations we

would play.

Barney Humphreys was g i ven

stewardship of the defence, with Ben

Mu sgrove and F rank i e A r l ow

spearheading the attack. We were

ready to go!

First up was the Hinchingbrooke A team.

A slightly frantic opening minute as both

teams settled into their rhythm. The Ernulf

team took a bit of getting used to their

defensive tactics, but soon settled.

Within two minutes Freddie Jupp showed

some real attacking promise, and his

shot cannoned off the crossbar.

Promising!

After four minutes, Jupp again drove at

the defence and demonstrated a superb

run and turn. The resulting shot just going

narrowly wide of the target.

The game continued to ebb and flow,

with goals being scored at both ends.

Some controversy with one of the

Hinchingbrooke goals — where is goal

line technology when you need it?

However, the ball did appear to cross

the line. With one minute to go the

scores were tied at 2-2. However,

disaster struck, Hinchingbrooke scored to

take the lead at 3-2.

The Ernulf players were disappointed,

but not down. A quick call to the

timekeeper established 20 seconds

remained. A chance for one final attack,

and BOOM! An equalising goal for

Ernulf meaning the final score was 3-3.

The goals were scored by Musgrove (1),

and Arlow (2). A cracking game to start

the tournament.

The next game was against the

Hinchingbrooke B team. A slightly

lacklustre start from the Ernulf team, and

within minutes a penalty was conceded.

Fortunately, the penalty was missed but

this was a clear wake up call for our

boys.

The Ernulf team began to pass the ball

more clinically, and eventually the

pressure told. Musgrove getting on the

score sheet again, this time from a

penalty award. Arlow then scored to

give the team some breathing space at

2-0, and there were s igns of

improvement all around.

The defensive troops led by Humphreys

were now clear in the strategy, and

were putting in some great blocks to

deny the Hinchingbrooke players. A final

goal from Musgrove, from a lovely

textbook jump shot, meant that the Ernulf

team had won 3-0. More importantly,

they were in to the FINAL!!

The final was to be against the

Hinchingbrooke team that they had

beaten in the group stages. However,

this team had improved significantly as

a result of their group games, so this

would be a tough encounter.

The final never really went Ernulf’s way,

with some tough calls being made. The

competition was fierce, and the boys

battled well especially when reduced to

6 men.

The final score was a 4-1 loss, but the

boys should be extremely proud of their

performances. Handball is now the new

favourite sport, and I look forward to

seeing this team in action again at our

district tournament.

PE FIXTURES AND EVENTS

YEAR 8 BASKETBALL On Wednesday 31 January 2018 Ernulf

Academy sent two teams to the Year 8

Girls District Basketball tournament. The

girls have been working hard in their PE

lessons, and have really enjoyed

basketball.

With their skills improved, Miss Webber

and Miss Moniz were hopeful of some

good performances in this tournament.

They put in some fantastic performances

throughout the tournament.

The B team put in some strong

performances, although they suffered

some unlucky defeats. Emily Matzk was

awarded the ’coaches player of the

tournament’ award for this team, as a

result of her excellent defending and

quick breaks up the court when the team

managed to regain possession. The B

team finished a very creditable 6th

position out of the 8 teams taking part—

a good result, well done!

The A team took to the court full of

confidence. The ‘coaches player of the

tournament’ award went to Lilly Bailey.

She could not stop scoring! In fact, she

even scored for the opposition in the 3rd

game!!

Other performances of note included

Sophie Caunt, who caught the eye with

some excellent dribbling skills and

crucial passing to create scoring

opportunities for her team mates. Ellie

Hicks also played brilliantly in defence,

regularly managing to wrestle the ball

from the opposition to gain possession

and set up more attacking opportunities.

As a result of all of this excellent play,

the Year 8 A team were crowned

WINNERS of the tournament!! They are,

therefore, district champions 2018!! This

is a fantastic achievement, and huge

congratulations to all the players and

both Miss Webber and Miss Moniz.

On Tuesday 30 January 2018 Ernulf

Academy sent a squad to the Hunts

District Gymnastics Championships.

The event was again hosted by the

Huntingdon Gymnastics Club, and was

seamlessly organised by Miss Broughton

from Longsands.

The 2018 competition saw a record

level of entries from the schools in

attendance, a great sign of gymnastics

flourishing in the district. The Ernulf team

had worked hard in preparation for the

event, and the squad were excited as

we arrived at the venue.

The competition was split into KS3 and

KS4. All gymnasts were entered into

novice, intermediate, or advanced

categories depending on their level of

experience.

They all had to complete a floor routine,

and a set vault. The exact routine and

vault depended on the age group and

experience level of the performer.

For many in the Ernulf team, this was a

f irs t experience of competit ive

gymnastics. To perform so well, under

fairly intense scrutiny and pressure from

judges and spectators, is a real credit to

all that took part. I am delighted to

report that we did bring back some

medals!!

Jessica Childerley (Year 7) performed

amazingly in the very competitive KS3

Advanced category. There was some

seriously tough competition, but Jessica

finished in a fantastic 2nd place to take

silver. What's more, she only missed out

on first place by a score of 0.1— A

brilliant performance.

In the KS3 boys Novice category, Finley

Sayer also took silver medal for Ernulf!

This was a great performance, and

again Finley missed out on top spot by

just 0.1.

Finley was only beaten by his Ernulf

colleague, Lewis Webb! Therefore,

Lewis is district champion for this

category, proudly taking the gold

medal! Well done Lewis — a great

achievement.

A huge congratulations to all of our

competitors who did a truly fantastic job.

I look forward to these students

continuing their gymnastics in the future.

Thankyou to Miss Moniz and Miss

Webber for putting in the extra hours of

floor practice in the lead up to the

competition!!

PE FIXTURES AND EVENTS

ERNULF VS LONGSANDS FOOTBALL 2018 The Year 8 squad had a fantastic turn

out for their first fixture of 2018. Some

new additions to the squad included

Baxter and Nixon, alongside the more

usual faces, meant that we travelled with

a full squad of 15 players.

With their fantastic National Cup run

only recently finished, Mr Walker took

the opportunity to rest some of his

squad, providing the opportunity for

others to be selected .

Under the guidance of the new look

coaching team of Bond and Dunnett, the

squad took to the field in a new 4-3-3

formation. The 11 players looked eager

to get started, and were clear as to their

roles in the side.

The early passages were very even

between the 2 sides, and this clearly

looked like an even contest. On 4

minutes, the first clear-cut chance fell to

Ernulf. The Longsands goal-keeper made

a good save to keep the scores level.

On 10 minutes, some indecision in the

Ernulf defence meant that Longsands

had a fantastic opportunity to take the

lead. The player was composed, and

finished well to put Longsands 1—0 up.

Despite this set back the Ernulf team

cont inued to work hard. Their

determination paid off on 20 minutes, as

Adam Chapman levelled the scores at

1—1 with the half time break

approaching.

The team talk focused on remaining

closer to the opposing players when in

defence, and also maintaining possession

for longer phases when in attack.

Just 4 minutes into the second half,

Frankie Arlow was through on goal.

With a good finish to put Ernulf ahead

1—2.

The game continued to ebb and flow,

with our new additions getting some

valuable game time. With the score

close at 1-2 the Ernulf team could never

relax. However, with just 5 minutes to go

Ben Musgrove scored to give some

breathing space at 1-3.

The score finished 1-3 to Ernulf—a great

result and performance for this squad.

Well played!!

SEN students have been enjoying an

exciting new PE activity thanks to the

dedication of our Disabilities PE

Specialist TA Mandy Hall. When Dave

Lawson, an experienced SEN worker

from Cricket East in Huntingdonshire

contacted Ernulf Miss Hall knew that this

was something her students would enjoy

in KS3.

The activity is an adapted game of

cricket, in many ways similar to the way

Subbuteo is a table top game of

football. The principles and ethos of

cricket remain intact, alongside the

competitiveness, the team work,

sportsmanship, respect and the skills

required.

The game is accessible to all abilities

and has proved to be very appealing.

The students have grown in confidence

and shown that they have understood

the concept and demonstrated skills and

qualities they don’t often get to share.

Without exception, students are

demonstrating team work, camaraderie,

support and tolerance for each other

and most importantly having fun!

The enthusiasm for Table Cricket is such

that the team are aiming high; they are

working towards the county finals and

success would mean that a team from

Ernulf could be representing the

Academy at Lords in the summer of

2018!

Our students have done extremely well

and Ernulf is hoping to enter two teams

into the Lord Traverner’s Competition on

07 February at Luton. Here they will not

only represent Ernulf Academy but also

Huntingdon District.

With Dave’s help Ms Hall is hoping to

roll out this activity to Year 10 SEN

students incorporating a Sports Leaders

Qualification; a fantastic idea and a

wonderful opportunity for those students

to gain essential skills in KS4 and build

their CV.
