TSC has provided prescription assistance for a long time, but to keep costs within our budget we use a limited formulary of covered medications, and only for 6 months while we connect clients with resources to meet long term needs. We helped many people, but we had to turn others away. The pharmacy will allow us to help everyone with their medication needs, and provide important medication counseling for our customers. For example, we had a woman come to us recently discharged from the state hospital needing 16 prescriptions filled. Such a complex regimen requires counseling to manage effectively. We are thrilled that our years of planning are coming to fruition for the new pharmacy. Watch for our next newsletter with more details.

Walk a Mile in My Shoes is how we tell the human stories behind the numbers we report. We ask Third Street Clinic clients if we can photograph their shoes. They then write their own caption, saying whatever they want--sometimes they talk about what brought them to TSC; sometimes they just say thanks. Letter from

the Director by Lynnell Simonson Popowski

Welcome to Third Street Clinic’s newsletter, “The Miracle Worker.” Inside you will find stories of the people we serve, the needs we meet, and how local professionals serve our neighbors in need. Thank you to all of the partners who help us meet our mission to provide the residents of the greater Grand Forks area access to health care services and medicine.

It is an exciting time at Third Street Clinic, or TSC. We moved our offices a half-block north of our former location on South 4th Street. We are now on the second floor of the Valley Health building, at 360 Division Avenue, Suite 200. We are across the street from Valley Community Health Center (VCHC). Come and see our fresh, new offices and waiting room for our clients.

We chose this location in part because we plan to open a pharmacy on the first floor in January of 2016. The full service pharmacy will be a convenience for people who live and work downtown, while providing an affordable sliding fee scale for those within 200% of the poverty level.

Third Street Clinic celebrated its 25thanniversary in April at the annual Miracle on Third Street Gala. This year’s gala was at the Grand Forks Country Club.

Dr. Yvonne Gomez, a family medicine physician at Altru Health System, received the Timothy Hockenberry Award for her tireless work toward improving access to health care services for low- income residents. Dr. Gomez began working as a volunteer with Third Street Clinic in 1994 during her residency with the UND Medical School She remained a volunteer and became medical director in 2005. For more than 20 years, Dr. Gomez has played a vital role at TSC, and we are grateful for her dedication.

The Hockenberry Award is given by TSC in honor of Dr. Timothy Hockenberry. During his residency in Grand Forks, ND, Dr. Hockenberry noticed patients struggling to make ends meet. He realized that many residents of our community were without insurance, turning basic ailments into life-altering events. With his time and talent, and the support of other volunteers, Third Street Clinic was born.

Needs Your Help

Dr. Gomez receives Hockenberry Award at Miracle on Third Street Gala

In February, Third Street Clinic participated in Giving Hearts Day, an online fundraising event hosted by the Dakota Medical Foundation, Impact Foundation, and the Alex Stern Family Foundation. TSC raised a total of $16,102, making this our most successful fundraising event to date!

As part of the Giving Hearts Day incentive program, TSC’s Board of Directors received the “Board on Board” Award for outstanding involvement on Giving Hearts Day. TSC is fortunate to have a board of directors who continually dedicates time and energy to our mission. From doctors to public health nurses, and pharmacists to social services, TSC’s Board of Directors helps guide its mission to have a great impact on the Greater Grand Forks community.

Curtis: How helping

hands restored his smile Curtis was in such pain he thought he would die. His teeth--several of which had broken off at his gums— were infected and in need of dental attention. But without money or insurance, where could he go? A friend’s suggestion led Curtis to Third Street Clinic, where he was helped by Rita, the client services coordinator.

Curtis said that Rita was tireless in making sure a dentist and oral surgeon saw him as soon as possible. Curtis appreciated how caring Rita was and how quickly she set up the appointments.

The next stop for Curtis was with oral surgeon Dr. Jonathan Gray, D.D.S., at the Face & Jaw Surgery Center, one of TSC’s providers of donated dental services. On the day of the tooth removal surgery, Curtis was feeling nervous due to being apprehensive of needles. He was comforted by Dr. Gray, who often checked in on him during the surgery. Curtis said he highly recommends Dr. Gray to anyone needing oral surgery and that “Dr. Gray is the bomb.”

Curtis then went to Bridgeford Dental, another provider of donated dental services for TSC. Dr. Charles Bridgeford, D.D.S., constructed and fitted Curtis’s dentures, which allows him to smile and talk like he couldn’t before. Curtis was pleased and recommends Dr. Bridgeford.

Curtis said, “Third Street Clinic’s impact on my life was huge. I feel 101 percent better! Third Street Clinic is caring, helpful, and gets things done quickly. You are it!”

Leo always had a general interest in health care but wanted to gain a better understanding of the health care system and its many intricacies. This led him to reach out to Third Street Clinic and offer his time. He plans to apply to medical school within the next two years after graduating in the spring. For hobbies, Leo enjoys reading and playing basketball. Leo enjoys being part of Third Street Clinic and contributing to the betterment of Grand Forks community.

MEET OUR TEAM

Lynnell is a lifelong resident of the Red River Valley and lives on a farm east of Warsaw with her husband, Salvin, and their fur family: Tanner the terrier, Chloe the hound, and Melvin the fat cat. Her only daughter lives in Des Moines with her husband, where she works as an agricultural economist. Lynnell is a champion chili-maker and avid reader of fine literature and cheap detective fiction. She earned a B.S.W. from the University of Minnesota Moorhead, and an M.A. in sociology from the University of North Dakota. She continued her doctoral work at Iowa State University where she focused on social policy. Lynnell brings many years of leadership in non-profits and a knowledge of health care policy reforms. She assumed the reigns of Third Street Clinic in October of 2014, and has worked diligently to bring our dream of an affordable pharmacy to fruition.

Rita is an East Grand Forks resident originally from Staten Island, NY. She received administrative training in Manhattan and worked for a New York law firm. Her husband, Matt, is from California. When they visited his parents, who had moved to North Dakota, they fell in love with the open spaces and friendly people. Their three children were born in Devils Lake, ND, where Rita worked as a bookkeeper. Ian and Asher are East Grand Forks High School students and Kindred is a 5th-grader. Rita has been a member of the Third Street Clinic staff for three years and enjoys serving Third Street Clinic clients.
