Division B Humorous Speech Contest Winner, Fall 2015
Lori Winnitowy, DTM, Speaker’s Corner Toastmasters Club
I would like to thank Mary Jane McGrath for dedicating her time and energy in organizing the Division B Circle of Gold coaching sessions, that I benefitted. I would also like to thank the experienced Toastmasters who dedicated their personal time to loyally coach and guide me, night after night, crafting my speech, my delivery, and staging of my presentation.
I can honestly say that I have never ever been as prepared, confident, calm and proud as I was on Nov 21 representing Division B at the District 42 Humorous Speech contest in Saskatoon. The best part? How comforting it was to be on stage and look out into the audience and see the Division B Toastmaster family smiling back at me.
Thank you to my Circle of Gold mentoring group for your comments, encouragement, unwavering support, honesty and kindness. I would also like to thank the Toastmaster Clubs that invited me to present at their club meetings. Every presentation I did was very beneficial and I appreciated your patience and feedback.
We are so blessed to have a Circle of Gold program in Division B and to have an energetic and tireless Toastmaster, Mary Jane, who leads this exceptional educational, humbling and personal development opportunity.

Sharp Tips!
by Randall Edge, DTM
Welcome to Sharp Tips #3.
Sound waves, which are essentially
vibrations that pass through the air have
properties assigned to them. We
discussed the property of audio
frequency that tells us the pitch of a
sound; but what about the power of a
sound? Let’s discuss then the next
property, the property of Amplitude of a
sound.
What is audio Amplitude?
Amplitude is the objective measurement
of the degree of change in atmospheric
pressure. Sounds with greater amplitude
will produce greater changes in
atmospheric pressure from high
pressure to low pressure. Amplitude is
important when balancing and
controlling the loudness of sounds. We
experience doing this by changing the
volume control on an audio device like a
stereo or a CD player. Amplitude It is
also the origin of the word amplifier, a
device which increases or decreases the
amplitude (loudness) of a sound wave.

Speaker’s Corner Toastmasters
It was recently a privilege and an honour for
me to give my speech on the D-Day landings
of June 6, 1944 to four separate audiences
outside the Toastmasters’ sphere. This was
done in conjunction with Remembrance Day
events, the audiences ranged in size from 25
to 580 people, each time the speech was
well-received, and it’s all to the credit of
Toastmasters.
From words of encouragement and polishing
of skills at the club level; to guest visits with
outside clubs, and presentation skills learned
in competitions; through to the
Communication and Leadership tracks of the
program itself, the credit is to Toastmasters
and to the individuals of Division B.
Toastmasters – what an ideal place to learn
public speaking skills and “B” involved in the
community!
