Sleep FactsDid you know?

An 85 year old woman presented to the Sleep Clinic for evaluation for OSA, she complained that after taking cerivastatin therapy for 5 years she began sleeping for 12 hours. She had excessive daytime sleepiness and had a nap for 2 hours each day. The patient developed symptoms of rhabdomyolysis, which included myalgias and muscle weakness. After stopping the Cerivastatin she regained her muscle strength but still had Excessive Daytime Sleepiness. The patient was admitted to hospital for loud snoring and witness apneas. Patient was 120 lbs and 5 feet. A Level 1 study was performed which indicated Severe OSA. AHI of 85 events/hr. Most events being Obstructive Apneas and Hypopneas. Lowest SPO2 was 73% and she spent 34% of the night with SPO2<90%.

All statins have been found to be associated with a spectrum of myotoxic side effects. Side effects ranging from myalgias and muscle weakness to more serious rhabdomyolysis and especially in combinations with Calcium channel blockers, anti-fungals, amiodarone, and brates to name a few. This case study may raise awareness for increasing vigilance for OSA as a potential complication of Statin Drug Therapy.
