93 points – 2014 Bien Nacido Vineyard ChardonnayBright, fresh and vivacious, this bottling from the historic vineyard offers white flowers, sea salt, lemons and buttered white peaches on the nose. Apple flesh and lime rind sizzles into the citrus-driven palate, where a touch of lemon verbena adds complexity to this straightforward and delicious wine.

92 points – 2014 Ashley’s Chardonnay Light aromas of beeswax, crushed chalk and scratch lemon skins emerge steadily on the nose of this single vineyard bottling, which carries lots of life and would thrive in a cellar. The chalky texture of the palate frames red apple, yellow pear, lime rind and sea salt flavors, with lots of acidic sizzle.

92 points – 2014 Sierra Madre Vineyard ChardonnayPink grapefruit, a linear chalky component and the aromas of apricot jam on brie cheese rind show on the nose of this bottling from one of the region’s oldest vineyards. There is tight focus to the palate, where green pear skins, pomelo pith, lemon zest and lime juice weave into an acidity that’s strong yet expertly integrated.

92 points – 2014 Parker West Vineyard ChardonnayFrom a vineyard on the western edge of the cool climate appellation comes this great wine, with touches of butter, almond, white flower buds and lime pith on the nose. The palate is high and tight, structured by Meyer lemon pith, made savory by sea salt and warmed up with savory melted butter on the finish.

90 points – 2013 Santa Barbara County SyrahTar and beef char kick off the nose on this dark and heavy wine, which offers asphalt, smoked meats and crushed elderberry. Caramelized beef, balsamic blackberry reduction, tobacco and touches of smoke show on the palate.

Wow, half of 2016 is already behind us! We

have been incredibly busy here at Fess Parker Winery with a fast and furious bottling season. The most recent wines to bottle have been our 2015 Rhone White wines like Rodney’s Vineyard Viognier, Santa Barbara County Viognier and the new white blend, Marcella’s. All of these wines are beautiful with bright, fresh, floral aromatics and wonderful acidity. They are sure to please with the warm summer weather by the pool or with your favorite summer meal. Next to bottle will be our reserve Chardonnays like Ashley’s, Bien Nacido and Parker West. While also having wonderful acidity, these wines possess rich, round mouthfeel with glorious texture. They are truly wonderful examples of cool climate Chardonnay. After all of these wines are bottled we will put together our 2014 Rhone red wines and then it will be time for harvest!

While we were supposed to be ravaged by an enormous El Ni`no, we only experienced enough rainfall to be close to “average” – less than 12 inches. We are still in drought conditions but in a little better place than we have been in the past four years. We also see a pretty decent crop in the vineyard, which is beneficial coming off of a very small crop from last year. Spring was temperate and Summer appears to be off to a temperate start, although a heat wave is predicted for next week. This is the time of the year I keep a close watch on Mother Nature and hope she is kind to us. Wish us luck!I hope you enjoy the wines, and from the whole team here at Fess Parker Winery...

In any family business the experts will tell you that the biggest challenge to survival is to secure

the interest of the third generation to keep the dream alive. We can’t help but think that Fess

would be very pleased to know what his grandkids are up to these days. He would of course be proud of all of them, and be the first to encourage each of them to follow their passions, no matter what they were … but we’re guessing he’d be tickled to know that …

Kris Parker, Eli’s eldest, is the founder and managing

partner of Third Window Brewing in Santa Barbara. Third Window crafts artisanal beers using – among many other things – grapes and hops grown on the home ranch here on Foxen Canyon.

Tessa, Eli’s stepdaughter, has been making wines from Italian varietals for several years under her Tessa Marie label. She has a tasting room in Los Olivos that is well worth a visit.

Spencer, Ashley’s eldest, is finishing up college and has been working in the wine department at Boulder Liquor

Mart for the last year. He’s working on his sales skills and benefits from the opportunity to taste the wares of the suppliers that call on the store. An education in its own right!

On the marketing side, Spencer’s little sister Greer is currently a summer intern with Charles Communications in San Francisco. Charles Comm has an impressive roster of winery and restaurant clients.

With any luck we’ll be able to rope a few more of the third generation into the family business! Did we mention that there are currently 11 great grandchildren and counting?

Some of you may recognize Maria from either the Fess Parker Winery or Epiphany tasting rooms; she is now the manager of the new tasting room. Next time you are in Santa Barbara, stop in to say hi to Maria and staff and enjoy a glass of wine. It’s a great opportunity for visitors to Santa Barbara who might not be able to make it over the hill to the winery to have a chance to taste our wines.

Harvest 2016 “Working” LunchDate: Fri, Sep 9, 2016Time: 7:30 AM to 1:30 PMVenue: Fess Parker Winery TerraceFriday Harvest Lunches are back and we’re kicking them off with an enhanced version where you can experience the magic of harvest firsthand with the Fess Parker Winery crew! Your day will begin bright and early at 7:30AM at the winery. You will have the opportunity to harvest grapes and participate in harvest activities such as working on the sorting table, hand punch-downs and working the basket press. Recover from the morning’s hard work with a themed family-style lunch, prepared by Chef de Partie Ashley Williams, with members of the Parker family and winemaking team. Venue: Fess Parker Winery TerraceCome join us for a very special evening as we celebrate the 2016 grape harvest. Meet our Winemaker and enjoy a pinot noir barrel tasting, taste through our selection of single-vineyard and clonal pinot noirs, and enjoy a special Champagne toast to a successful harvest season! We will be cooking a pastured pig raised in the Santa Rita Hills specifically for this event by local farmer Jake O. Francis. The pig will be slow-cooked on the rotisserie and served family style along with freshly prepared seasonal side dishes to round out the meal. Make your reservations soon, as this event will sell out.
