From the Desk of Nurse Barbara Carter

"In the Bleak Midwinter" is a Christmas carol based on a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti. It was published, under the title "A Christmas Carol", in the January 1872 issue of Scribner's Monthly. The poem first appeared set to music in The English Hymnal in 1906 with a setting by Gustav Holst.

In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan; Earth stood hard as iron,

Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow,

Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter

Long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain,

Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign:

In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed

The Lord God Almighty — Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom Cherubim Worship night and day,

A breastful of milk And a mangerful of hay;

Enough for Him, whom Angels Fall down before,

The ox and ass and camel Which adore.

Angels and Archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim

Thronged the air; But only His Mother In her maiden bliss

Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.

What can I give Him, Poor as I am? —

If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man

I would do my part, — Yet what I can I give Him, —

Give my heart.

These words apply to us today. Wishing you all a blessed Christmas and a most wonderful New Year! Barbara Carter

Christian Education Corner

Advent and Christmas Celebrations are around the corner! On the first Sunday of Advent, December 3rd,

(this weekend) we will share in our beloved, annual Presentation of the Crèche. However this year we will

do something a little different. The children will personify the character that they individually are presenting.

For example, a sheep will carry a sheep, etc. Children and youth, please join us at 5:15 to don your outfit or

“costume.” The program will begin in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 and we will share hot chocolate and cook-

ies following the Crèche Presentation. No practice will be necessary.

Advent and Christmas Display: Share your God-given Gifts!

This Advent we are inviting you to bring Christmas photos, (which we can copy if you would like!), Christmas

art, Christmas literary reflections, such as poetry or a memory you would like to write about, yours or your

children’s art . . . whatever you would like to bring, bring it to the church office so that we might display our

many memories and art forms with the rest of the congregation. We will start sharing the first week of Ad-

vent and will continue to add to the wall whenever you bring it. We will share what you bring with tenderness

and care!

Advent Adoration

O Come Let Us Adore Him! This Advent pull away from the noise and rush by simply resting in the

presence of God. Prepare your heart to receive Christ anew. Join us in the Historic Chapel, which will be

open from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, (December 6th, 13th and 20th). Childcare will be provided from

6-8:00 p.m. It will be helpful if you can let us know if you are bringing your children to the nursery.

SAVE THE DATE:

College-Age Breakfast on December 31st (more information to come)

Senior High Christmas Party, will be held Sunday, December 10th at 5-6:30 at Cletra Wormley’s home.

Middle School Christmas Party, will be held on Sunday, December from 5:00-6:30

Bible Studies in the New Year…

We have filled our DISCIPLE I group! We will meet starting January through the summer for 34

weeks. Disciple Bible Study usually starts in September, but our group was eager to start in January. We

hope to offer another group in September, so you will hear more about the options in 2018.

*Are you interested in another short-term study? In 2018, we will also be offering two eight-week

courses from the DISCIPLE Bible study curriculum. One is an Introduction to the Old Testament and the

other will be an Introduction to the New Testament. First, participants gain a deeper understanding and ap-

preciation of the Old Testament as an integral part of the Christian Bible and a renewed discovery of our

identity in God and God's vision for all things. This 8 week study will require daily reading assignments and

1 to 1 ½ hours of group time each week, which will include a video component and conversation so that we

will be able to discuss our readings and hear interpretation and context for the biblical texts we will be read-

ing.

Community Outreach Committee: The Main Street United Methodist Church Benefit Christmas Concert for Kernersville Christmas Stocking Fund is on

Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m. We hope you will be able to attend this worthy event. Don’t miss the many local school chorus groups and others sharing the joys of Christmas through music.

Kernersville Christmas Stocking Fund is our featured organization again this month. The Kernersville News and Kernersville Moravian Church are co-sponsors. We usually help about 200 families, including 400

children. All donations to Kernersville Christ-mas Stocking Fund are used entirely for family gift cards. Your donations are tax deductible and every donation of any amount is appreciat-ed. This quote from one of our committee mem-bers captures what many of us feel: “My heart delights on distribution day when the families and children come to receive their gifts.” Thank you for your efforts to FILL THE JAR! The Samaritan Ministries Annual Penny Campaign provides food and necessities for the Forsyth County shelter.

We thank you for your support of Julia’s Team for the American Heart Association walk on November 11

th. Although the weather was cold,

our spirits were warmed by the outpouring of love & the generosity of Julia Long’s family & friends who were celebrating her legacy. Your financial gifts to AHA stay in the community for research, improvements in medical manage-ment, and education about heart disease pre-vention, especially women’s heart health. Please consider joining us next year. Food pantry shelves become bare as we get into the winter months. Please try to buy an ex-tra item for our baskets.

2018 Kenya Team

There will be an organizational meeting of the 2018 Kenya Team on Saturday, December 16 at 10:00

a.m. in the conference room. We will begin organizing the team. Ray of Hope Orphanage has requested peo-

ple with basic carpentry and construction skills to refurbish their school’s outdoor playground area. We will pos-

sibly be building a tree house if we can get enough money in donations to purchase supplies once we get to

Kenya. (Adult KMC Sunday School classes are invited to contribute to this project.) Also, there has been a

request for elementary school teachers, retired educators, or current college students who are education ma-

jors to design and implement a 4-day teacher training event for the ROH teachers and area teachers. Another

request has been for health care workers to come and open the clinic which is on the ROH property. This

would possibly be a “well-baby” clinic, prenatal care, basic first aid, and health assessments for referrals to the

hospitals. We could also use people who have sewing skills, and can teach hygiene and nutrition. We will also

be leading a Bible Camp and need folks to plan and implement this program for approximately 300 children

participants. Skills in Bible storytelling, songs, and puppetry have been requested. Come join us for this meet-

ing and see if God is calling you to Kenya this summer. (June 19-July 5, 2018) (Even if you cannot actually go

to Kenya, if you have an interest in these projects, come to the meeting and see if you can be a support team

person to assist with fund raising.)
