FAMILY MEMBER PROFILE: NEW EACH MONTH ABOUT OUR MEMBERS!

”GREG SNIDER” by Jerry Heavrin, Secretary

Greg was born in Alaska. His family moved to Roseburg, Oregon when he was 3 years old.

Greg attended grade school and high school in Roseburg. After graduation he attended Oregon

Institute of Technology and received an Associate Degree in Construction Management and

continued for a BT (Bachelor Technology) in Structural Engineering in early 1970’s. He began

work as an inspector for the Federal Highway System, then worked for the Peter Kiewitt & Sons

Construction firm on Highway 205 through Vancouver, Washington. Greg then worked as

Project Engineer on a highway project between Libby, Montana and Rexberg, Montana. He

met his wife Julie in High School as seniors, and had dated for three years, before they were

married in 1971. In a 2 week period, he was in 4 states and Canada, trying to complete on-

going projects. He had a different address where he lived, different license plates on his car,

different drivers license, in other words he was a “Vagabond”, not a good thing for a married

couple. Needless to say, Greg & Julie left this nomad lifestyle. They returned home to

Roseburg and entered into a Corporation with his Father-in-Law and his Brother-in-Law as

Concrete Contractors. They mainly focused on Commercial Construction, Grocery Stores, 7-11

Stores, and in Roseburg it was mainly Residential Construction projects. Greg started his own

business in 1980, specializing in Concrete Construction and Carpentry work. Greg hired Paul

Deem as a Journey Concrete Finisher, and they continued to work as a team and continued

this at our Club. They both worked on The Caretaker Patio Slab, Setting Posts in concrete at the

Pistol Range, and Concrete Handicap Ramp, and setting posts at the Club Entry Gate. Paul has

since moved to Pima, Arizona, basking in the sunshine. Greg & Julie have 2 daughters, Jessica

and Narissa, both are married and now live in Oregon and Washington. At this point in his life,

he has given his best to his daughters, and became an active member of the Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Mormon Church). This decision really anchored him and his

family and instills in all the family that Jesus Christ is our savior. To this day, he and the family

hold conservative beliefs. Greg said that he is blessed to be able to retire, and has been

working hard to improve his shooting skills. Greg has volunteered for many Club projects and

brings a professional attitude that is needed by our Club to improve it for the membership.

Greg said that we are very lucky to have some really good gun clubs in this part of Oregon.

When he visits Vancouver, Washington, it is hard to find a place to shoot. He said that he truly

loves our Club and its laid back and relaxed shooting events, particularly the shoots held on

Saturday. He feels that all members should make it a point of trying out one of the Monthly

Shooting Events being held, and run by Bill Hagan, who makes the shoots so much fun for

experts and for the new beginners. We would like to see Greg consider volunteering to lead

our long-range projects planning and with his background, we could make better overall use of

our Club property, and could meet our future Club needs for all our membership interests. 3

These are some of the first Shooters at the Steel Challenge Shoot

held on May 31st, 2014. They shot on 3 different ranges with total of

5 different scenarios, 5 steel targets at each one, and shooting 5

times at each of the targets, in different order. A total of 125

minimum rounds, that was fun to shoot and to watch. You may

select as many scenarios as you desire to shoot (Each scenario = 25

shots). We will post the results for the June Steel Challenge Shoot.

A special thank you to Patricia Ireland for her nice note included with her Membership

Renewal and with an additional donation of $50 to the Club’s Funds. Patricia paid for the

addition of the women’s bathroom, as we moved toward a Family Membership, and which has

encouraged the member’s wife's to participate in the use of our Club, and learn to shoot if

they so desired. This restroom improvement has resulted in women taking a more active role

in Club affairs and provides the proper facilities for women non-members and guests, in place

of a Unisex bathroom that no one likes.

On June 21st at the Youth Field Day, a total of 10 Young People ( 8 boys & 2 girls ) proceeded to

take the Field Instruction from our ODF&W Hunter Safety Instructors; David Miller, Jimmy

Powell & Beverly Kruger, and then took the written test. Hunter education is mandatory for

hunters under the age of 18 unless they are hunting on land owned by their parents or legal

guardian or are participating in the Mentored Youth Hunter Program. The Oregon Hunter

Education Certification is valid in all states. We are so grateful for the dedication of these Club

Members to provide this volunteer service for our community youth.

Here are recent pictures showing some knock down targets

that have been destroyed. Someone thought is would be fun

to take armor piercing rounds or FMJ’s from a rifle and shoot

these targets. One of the holes went clear through the steel

channel and ruined the hinge. The deep pockets in the 1/2”

Plate are so severe that there is a danger it would throw lead

back at shooters if the shell struck in the same place.

While our Club is open to the public, (and it provides a safe place for people to shoot) we have a

set of Range Rules, and expect safe practices, not violations and very dangerous actions. This is

now an added Un-necessary expense to the membership, to make these required repairs. We

need all of our Members to be observant, as these facilities belong to the Club, and as such each

one of us have a vested interest in not seeing items being destroyed, or unsafe shooting behavior

occurring. During the (2014) season, between June 1st 2013 and May 31st 2014, the funds that

were deposited in the Cash Boxes, amounted to $ 5,357.59. This is a great fund raiser for the Club

and provides added funds for the Club’s needs. These funds are being deposited in a Savings

Account, which was started in order to cover Unexpected and/or Emergency expenses. If this

kind of destructive damage continues along with damage at the other Ranges, we may need to

consider the cost of a full-time Club Observer, who could also collect daily fees. Our Members

pay a Membership Fee, that entitles them to functional Shooting Ranges, much more so than a

person that pays $5 for a day’s worth of shooting. The various Club Shooting events, together

with Raffles, have enabled the Club to make improvements to the various types of shoots, such

as the knock Down targets that are used in some of our Club shoots. That is why this is so up-

setting to our officers that run our Shoots, and also to the event shooters, as these targets will

now require repair, before they can be used in another Club Shooting event.

Members have more concern about the Club grounds, the Targets, and Target Stands, than many

Non-Members. An anonymous letter was received, addressed to the President, that stated their

concern with the stability of the existing target stands. We agree that we need different holders

that are more secure holders for the Targets, particularly at the 100yd Range. This matter is under

consideration, as this will require time, money and labor to install permanent usable holders.
