SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE Congratulations to our newly formed School Council. The team comprises:

The school council team will soon undergo training with a leading edge company in the field of governance - Effective Governance and is also currently seeking two more members from the wider community who have skills and knowledge in the following areas – digital technologies and marketing. Please email [email protected] if you have suggestions for these two community members. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY To all of the amazing dads and grandads – have a fantastic Father’s Day on Sunday! Special thanks to Lyle and her team for helping Manly West children honour their dads with a special gift! TREKKING TO SCHOOL THURSDAY All families are invited to celebrate the opening of the first stage of our new nature play space on Thursday 14 September with a trek to school at 8.00am followed by a free barbeque. A letter with further details will be sent home early next week.

PARADE Please note that parade for the final week of this term will be held on Friday, 15 September at 9am except for those classes attending specialist lessons during that time. There will be NO PARADE on Monday, 11 September.

SINGFEST PERFORMERS Thank you to Ms Comiskey and the Singfest team who represented our school wonderfully. FAREWELL TO OUR JAPANESE VISITORS We thank Mrs Underwood, children and families of Manly West SS and the Japanese students and staff from Ritsumeikan Uji Junior High School in Kyoto for creating such a wonderful atmosphere of sharing and positivity. We will miss you! All the best for a safe trip back to Japan! Please collect your stickers from the register at Woolies, stick them on the sticker sheet and once it’s full, drop it in to the MANLY WEST SS collection box at the store or at the Office. Earn & Learn finishes on 19 September so collect now to help us earn some wonderful education resources for our school. Junior Band There are no more Junior Band rehearsals this term. Rehearsals will recommence the first week of next term. Please see Ms C if you need another copy of the Music Calendar for the semester. 2018 instrumental Music Information Evening Our Instrumental Music Teacher, Mike Rander, will present an information evening for parents/caregivers of current Year 3 students interested in joining the 2018 instrumental music program. The information evening will be held on Tuesday, 5 September from 6.00 to 7.00pm in the Hall. Students had an opportunity to hear the instruments on offer when the Wynnum State High School Year 7/8 concert band performed for them at the end of last term. This term, the MWSS Senior Band will perform for the Year 3 classes, showcasing the woodwind, brass and percussion instruments on offer in the 2018 program.

From the P & C Entertainment Books Sale of the entertainment books is closing soon. If you would still like to purchase a book, please contact the Office. Manly West Manta Rays Swim Club It’s that time of year again … SWIM CLUB!! We are having our sign on day at the Manly West State School pool on Monday, 11 September at 3pm till about 4.30pm. There will be a welcome BBQ and a free swim for the kids (and adults). Parents will need to supervise their own children while they are in the pool. Rachel from Bayside Swim School will also be running assessments for swim lessons. Children from OHSC can also be assessed for lessons with the help of staff from OHSC. Manly West Swim Club runs in Term 4 and Term 1 and it is for children of all ages and all swimming abilities. We are an amateur club and have children swimming for all reasons: fun, fitness improvement. Mums and dads are encouraged to join in on the fun as well. Children are timed every week and swim against children of similar abilities, not necessarily age. We have a few carnivals throughout the season and most of the children get to join in with the fun of a swim carnival. Club nights are held on Mondays from 6pm. We have a canteen that operates with a selection of hot food, hot and cold drinks. Club start date will be Monday, 2 October 2017 at 6pm. You can come along and have a chat to our friendly committee and see what it’s all about and even have a try before you sign on. Hope to see you all there.

Term 4 is just around the corner, which means it’s time for swimming! Bayside Swim School offers Learn to Swim classes and Squad sessions before and after school right here in our school pool. Book your child in for a free swimming assessment on Monday, 11 September when we’ll join with the Manta Rays Swim Club for their season sign on.

There will be tea, coffee, cakes, a sausage sizzle and cold drinks available. Can you help this local Charity Cafe Event? On 12 September you can trade a box of cereal for a free coffee at a participating cafe.
