1 NEWSLETTER Volume 18 Number 2 November 2013 From the desk of Sister Nancy Sullivan, Executive Director Here we serve again! We are beginning our 17 th season of Out of the Cold, a service that regretfully still needs to exist to assist some of Hamilton’s most vulnerable citizens by providing for them hot, nutritious breakfasts and dinners six days each week, from the beginning of November until the end of March. Most of our volunteers return year after year for which we are grateful, but we are also happy to welcome 25 new volunteers this season which brings a spark of fresh air to the program. Thanks to a grant from the Trillium Foundation we are working on a five year Strategic Plan in order to ensure that we are providing our particular service in the best way possible and to see if there are gaps that can be filled by the dedicated volunteers of Out of the Cold during the winter months. We are grateful to Samantha McLeod of Taylor Leibow and Nancy Guay for providing our important bookkeeping services. We bid a fond adieu to Rev Don Berry-Graham who has been a member of our Board of Directors for many years and we welcome Myles D’Arcey who steps up to join our other dedicated Board members. We also welcome a number of new Coordinators. Christine Rowthorn and her sister Elaine Turkstra are replacing Ariel Rogers at St. Stephen’s on Tuesdays. Luckily Ariel will be staying on as a volunteer. Annette and John Goar are the new Coordinators at Wentworth Baptist on Fridays taking over from Coordinators Russ and Vyv Reilly who will remain as volunteers. Russ and Vyv’s presence at the Board meetings will be missed. We also welcome Paul Berton who is assuming the Coordinator role at MacNab on Saturdays replacing me. Diamond Jiwani, who has coordinated the dinner provided by the Ismaili Muslim Community over these past many years on Thursday nights once a month, is stepping aside. We are grateful to him and we welcome Shafraz Kassam as the new Coordinator. We distributed our Christmas, holiday packages to our guests earlier than usual this year in order that they may have hats, scarves and socks before the winter really gets underway. We are always in need of new gloves for our guests. It is with a grateful heart, I wish all of you a blessed 2014. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT It is always such a wonderful, heartwarming night when we gather with our many volunteers to celebrate them and all that they do for Out of the Cold and our guests. On April 17 th this year we celebrated by gathering together with about 250 of our volunteers. It was a wonderful night with excellent food served by Luigi’s. Once again this year Diamond Jiwani and his great volunteers organized an outstanding raffle with many wonderful donated prizes. Some students from St. Mary’s volunteered to help serve our volunteers and Jeff Goodes entertained us with his engaging and humorous MC style. Out of the Cold would not exist if not for the dedicated and heartfelt service provided by our 400 volunteers, to our most grateful guests. On behalf of those you so willingly serve~ THANK YOU! Volume 18 Number 2 November 2013

From the desk of Sister Nancy Sullivan, Executive Director

Here we serve again! We are beginning our 17th season of Out of the Cold, a service that regretfully still needs to exist to assist some of Hamilton’s most vulnerable citizens by providing for them hot, nutritious breakfasts and dinners six days each week, from the beginning of November until the end of March.

The Ancaster Film Fest is delighted to have completed its tenth year providing the best in Canadian and International films to the Hamilton region while donating all of its proceeds to charities and service organizations. Since inception, approximately half of the proceeds have been given to the Hamilton Out of the Cold program in recognition of

the fantastic service this wonderful organization provides for the needy and homeless during the five coldest months of the year. In 2013, AFF donated over $15,000 with $8,400 directed to the Hamilton Out of the Cold Program. We at AFF feel honoured to continue to be able to assist HOOTC in this way. The eleventh season of the Ancaster Film

Fest begins on Monday January 6th with screenings at 1:00, 4:00 and 7:15 p.m. at Ancaster Silver City. Memberships are sold out for 2014 but non members are always most welcome, $9 at matinees and $10 in the evening. Visit ancasterfilmfest.com or check us out on Facebook for more information.

MISCHA WEISZ FOUNDATION

Once again this season HOOTC was the thankful recipient of a donation from the Mishca Weisz Foundation.

Mischa Weisz was the President and CEO of the TNS Smart Network. He flourished in business and as a generous entrepreneur who, upon discovering he had a short time to live, wanted to do something significant and important for those in need. Mischa set up a foundation that would allow his family and friends to continue to give financial gifts to worthwhile charities after his death.

Mischa will be remembered and his name will live on through the spirit of his generosity. Thank you MISCHA.

ALLEGRA~FootPRINT HOOTC was chosen to receive services from Allegra’s FootPRINT Fund. Thank you to Aryn and everyone at Allegra for your work on our new logo. Well done. “The FootPRINT Fund® helps eligible nonprofit organizations enhance their image, expand their services and extend their printing budgets utilizing Allegra’s marketing and print services.”

HALLOWEEN FOR HUNGER On Halloween Night students from St. Mary’s High School visited their neighbours and instead of collecting for themselves collected non perishable items for those in need in our community. Hamilton Out of the Cold was one of the very grateful recipients of this event. A heartfelt Thank You to the students of St. Mary’s High School and all those involved who helped to provide for our program. It really helps us in serving our guests throughout the HOOTC season.

ST. ANN’S ANCASTER ~ FOOD DRIVE St. Ann’s Parish in Ancaster put out a call to their parishioners to help provide for our Breakfast Program. Thank you to all those at St. Ann’s, Ancaster who answered that call and donated so generously.

MAZON CANADA Out of the Cold is very thankful to be chosen this year to receive a donation from MAZON Canada. There are many worthwhile organizations that MAZON funds and we are very grateful to be one.

Their generosity will provide many hot, healthy meals for those in need.

The following is an Excerpt from the MAZON Canada Website:

Who we are… MAZON Canada is the national Jewish response to hunger. To date, our organization has allocated over 7 million dollars to frontline organizations battling hunger across Canada.

mazon (mah’zohn, n) Hebrew for food, nourishment, sustenance

What we do… Based on the tradition of tikkun olam (healing the world), MAZON Canada raises awareness of poverty and hunger and links it with the mitzvah (obligation) of tzedakah (charity.) Funds raised by MAZON Canada are distributed on a non-denominational basis and allocated once a year giving much needed relief to carefully vetted organizations that provide basic food needs.

Our mandate…MAZON Canada responds to the needs of the hungry wherever and whoever they may be.
