PRINCIPAL MATTERS

I have had a wonderful time this week visiting

classrooms and talking to children about

their work.

What a pleasure it is getting to know our new

kindergarten children who have been visiting

me and sharing their work with me. KS came

to my office for a meeting and then drew

beautiful pictures of me. It is so important to

spend time developing positive relationships

with our kids!

A huge thankyou to our team of hard working grass layers. Mr Jordan was so excited to see a break in the

weather and be able to lay the turf we have been eagerly awaiting. Our playground is looking fantastic!

Thankyou to our groundsmen, Mr Greg Jordan and Mr Jim McLeod who worked so hard to make our school

such a beautiful environment to spend every day in. A very special thankyou to Mr Baker for volunteering

his time to help us. Even Mr Scott got his hands dirty and helped to get the job done! What a super team

effort!!

Attendance

The Department of Education is monitoring attendance very closely and seeking information regarding

attendance on a regular basis. Most students have returned to school this year and are already establishing

excellent routines and high levels of attendance. I am concerned about some students who are already

missing school for unjustified reasons. I monitor attendance weekly and will be contacting families when

necessary. Please see the information included in this newsletter about the effect and impact of habitual

absence. We love seeing your children every day and want the best learning outcomes for them. This can

only happen if they are here.

ON LINE BEHAVIOUR Many of the children participated in cyber safety lessons last week and this is an ongoing discussion that

takes place within classrooms. I am receiving frequent reports of inappropriate on line behaviour that occurs

particularly when children are gaming live with other participants. I cannot stress enough the high level of

guidance that is required by children in this space. Children in primary school are only learning to navigate

social situations and have difficulty reading emotions, predicting consequences and responding

appropriately even when they are face to face and supported by adults around them. In an online

environment, they have none of these cues. They cannot see each other, they are distracted by the game

and are not predicting consequences of their words; and they usually have no mediator, support or parent

sitting with them…. It is inevitable that there will be problems. As a parent myself, this is my job to manage

at home with my children. At school, we can support with helping to learn empathy, supporting children to

understanding what is ok and not ok in various settings but we cannot be there at home with your children

on their devices. This is a very tricky space for children and something that is worth a full community

response. Children need support to operate in this very unstructured and often very unsafe environment.

Dogs at School

Dogs are no longer permitted on school grounds. If you walk your dog to bring your children to school or

pick-up in the afternoon, please make arrangements to meet your child outside the school fence and

preferably away from the main crowd.

Council Rangers and/or the Police can issue on-the-spot fines of $330.00 for dogs on school grounds.

College Connect for Year 5 & Year 6 Families

An invitation is extended to families of Year 5 & Year

6 students to attend Hastings Secondary College’s

College Connect presentation to be held in our Library

on Wednesday, 4th March, 6:00 to 7:00pm.

The presentation will address the excellence,

innovations, opportunities and successes which

Hastings Secondary College offers to every student.

SCRIPTURE

Our school scripture program commenced back this week. We have hopefully ironed out the few teething

issues we found and are set for the program to run smoothly for the rest of the year. As per the new

Department of Education Religious Education Policy, students have automatically rolled over into their

preference from last year. If you wish for your child to change preference please send an email through with

your request.

Ethics - Once again we do not have enough Ethics volunteers to cater to the amount of interest in this

program. Students have been placed in waiting list classes where necessary and will participate in non-

scripture until such time as we have Ethics teachers available. Primary Ethics are running a training course

at our school on Saturday, 4th and Sunday, 5th April (9am to 4pm) which will hopefully result in a couple

more teachers for our school. If you would like to volunteer as an Ethics teacher and can spare 30 minutes

each Tuesday morning, full training for the role and teaching materials are provided through Primary Ethics.

In Ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments

with evidence. For more information on this training opportunity please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or

contact our Ethics Coordinator, Phoebe Crane on 0400 776 776.

Bahai – Bahai is another option for Special Religious Education. Bahai develops the spiritual attributes or

virtues common to all the world’s major religions. In addition, content of the program is aimed to develop

within the students the knowledge, skills, understandings and attitudes required to be world citizens and to

embrace the equality of all peoples regardless of race, religion, nationality, class or gender. Bahai

pamphlets are available at the Office if you require further information.

in a favourite place or space. If you have a photo of the whole family reading, that
