Presentation night 2018

This year’s presentation night was held on Tuesday 6 November at the Norwood Town Hall. Parents and family members filled the hall to join this year’s high-achieving students and celebrate their successes. It was a night of awards

and music that we can be collectively proud of. Special thanks to Ms Amanda Baldock, Ms Donna Richards-Stone and their team for their organisation. Our school captains’ speech by Georgia James and Morgan Bevan was a highlight as they recounted their time at Heathfield and what they have achieved and the many challenges they have faced. We have certainly been fortunate to have such talented and dedicated school leaders who act as exemplary role models.

The key message delivered by staff and award sponsors throughout the night was that in life we should all find our inner passions and work hard and persist to nurture these and by doing so success follows.

Our guest speaker, 2011 graduate Sarah Hammond, spoke about her amazing journey which led her to founding the Kids Arthritis foundation. She provided us all with a valuable lesson that finding your calling in life can have tremendous benefits not only on your own life, it can also have many far reaching benefits on the lives of many others.

The message of the importance of community came through in all presentations and was echoed by Ms Julie Stenklev, Governing Council Treasurer, who gave closing comments, which focussed on our school as a community that supports the growth

and development of every student who attended. As always the evening was given a special sense of occasion by the exceptional music and drama performances by our students. A list of award winners is presented on page 2 and 3.

Specialist schools entrepreneurial application

In our ongoing work in the transforming school network, the school at the end of term 2 applied to be one of 4 Department for Education schools to be an entrepreneurial specialist school. This specialism would allow students and families to apply to attend HHS to be part of the program. Students would receive from year 8, specialist teaching in entrepreneurial education and would be given access to specialist services, resources from across the state to support students who are in the program to develop their passions, entrepreneurial skills and character traits. We still are awaiting the outcome of this application. A special thanks to Ms Jayne Fulbrook, and the Entrepreneurial Students Team who developed the school’s application.

Year 12 breakfast

On Friday 2 November a breakfast was held for our year 12 students to acknowledge the completion of their formal lessons and to wish them well for the upcoming exams. Helped by a warm sunny morning and great food cooked by the staff team, the breakfast was a most enjoyable time spent together. We followed breakfast with tug-of-war competitions, t-shirt signing and water fights. It was a fun way for students to let off a little bit of steam and enjoy their last school day together. Year 12 graduation ceremony

This year’s graduation ceremony will be held at the Blackwood Hills Baptist Church, Coromandel Parade, Blackwood on Tuesday 20 November starting at 7.00pm. This event acknowledges the completion of our year 12 students’ time at Heathfield High School and provides the opportunity to wish them well for their future.

Heathfield High School 2018 Art/ Design exhibition

This annual event was held on Thursday 8 November in the Visual Arts/Design Centre. It was a fantastic opportunity for our community to see the talents of the students at Heathfield High School and, as always, was well attended. It continues to confirm the strong support in the school and the wider community for the arts and Heathfield’s achievements by students. This school has an outstanding reputation for the delivery of quality programs in art and design. I would like to acknowledge the work of Lindsey Crowe, Arts Coordinator and her team of teachers in planning and making this exhibition so successful.

Office 365

Student Office 365 accounts are only active while they are enrolled at school and for a period of 3 months after their enrolment finishes. Once this time passes, students can no longer access the files they’ve stored in Office 365 applications. Please make sure your students download any files they need to a USB stick or portable hard drive before they finish before their account expires.

Cross CountryMolly McIlwain was the only student to represent Heathfield High School at this year’s cross country event. Molly came 18th out of 101 and was thrilled with her efforts. It started raining as Molly was warming up. It continued to pour down for the duration of the event which made conditions hard for the runners.

Molly also recently competed in the Viva Carnival. She ran in the 100m, 200m and 400m. One of the best things about the day is the great sportsmanship, which I think the picture to the right captures.

S4S Maker SessionIn preparation for our stall at the Stirling Christmas Pageant on Sun-day 18 November. Middle Years S4S participated in a ‘Maker Ses-sion’ to make products to sell on our stall. Students potted teacup succulents and made recycled book Christmas wreaths, origami lolly boxes and cookie ingredient jars. They also had a chance to practice their clowning routines which they will proudly display in between floats at the parade. It was lots of fun and we are looking forward to seeing everyone at the pageant.

NAPLAN Online 2019On Friday 30 November Heathfield High School will be conducting a school readiness test for NAPLAN Online in 2019. As part of this all year 8 students will sit a NAPLAN trial test online. The purpose of readiness testing activities is to ensure your child is familiar with their device and the online test environment, as well as to test school and national infrastructure systems and processes. Readiness testing is not another NAPLAN and will not formally assess students who participate in the test.

Some of the questions in the trial test have sound, we are requesting that all student bring headphones on the testing day.

HOMESTAY FAMILIES NEEDED Our International Student Program depends on the warm hospitality and generosity of our local community. Due to the growth and diversity of our International Program we are constantly looking for families to host students.

As a local family hosting an international student, you will have the chance to: • learn about other cultures, customs and traditions • make lifelong friendships with your student and their family • participate in activities and meet other host families • explore fun things to see and do in South Australia

Homestay families are paid to host a student.

We have 2 tours in term 4, and numerous tours throughout 2019. Why not register now for upcoming opportunities! If you are willing to host a student in the future or are interested in more information please contact Donna Richards-Stone via email [email protected] or phone 8139 9300. Further details will be forwarded to those interested.

We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate your family being part of our International community.

8.5 – BEERENBERG PROJECTThis year, 8.5 participated in the Beerenberg project which has been an absolute rollercoaster ride to be involved in. A term and a half project in Science, Technology and Mathematics – it was definitely one of the most stressful ‘assignments’ our class will go through this year!

From conducting the survey, designing the box, choosing the products, making the labels and calculating the price, it was all a bit much for a few people at different times. However, in our teams, we really assisted each other and we wouldn’t have completed our boxes and presented our pitches at Beerenberg Farm without constant communication and collaboration amongst all group members.

It has really been an experience none of us will forget. There was a lot of stress but we also had a lot of fun designing our boxes, and we formed some really strong bonds within our groups.

We would like to thank all of the staff at Beerenberg Farm who helped out during our three visits. In particular, a huge thank you to Narelle Hardingham, who helped our class out in just about every way imaginable.

Here are some pictures of the 5 Beerenberg teams with our final products.

Year 9 For Girls OnlyLast term the year 9 ‘For Girls Only’ class met with Sonya Ryan from the Carly Ryan Foundation to help put together a new media campaign for the foundation, promoting healthy use of social media specifically targeted at young people. Using ideas generated by the students, graphics designers created images for which the girls then wrote the captions. The first two have been launched on the Carly Ryan Facebook and Instagram pages with more to follow in the next few weeks.

Year 9 For Girls Only The year 9 girls life skills class ‘For Girls Only’ returned to Bunnings Mt. Barker this term to continue to build upon their DIY skills. The girls made planter boxes that they donated to the Ranges Infant and Toddler Centre in Stirling as part of their front play area upgrade. The students painted the planter boxes in blackboard chalk so that the children use them to draw on or label the plants. On our visit to the centre the girls helped the toddlers decorate and draw on the boxes with chalk. Ranges director Carmen Wilson hopes to continue to build a relationship with Heathfield High School through the year 9 life skills courses.
