Integrity For many people, Sam Allardyce had the dream job as England Manager, one of English football’s most coveted roles, and was at the pinnacle of his career. However, after just 67 days he stepped down from the Football Association, by mutual decision, following what he described as “a silly thing to do” when he made a significant error of judgement by telling undercover reporters from the Daily Telegraph how to get around player transfer rules. This news made me mindful that, at Glyn, we are all striving to realise our own goals and, in a school as dynamic as Glyn, the directions in which we are all travelling is truly mind-blowing and the places where we will settle is limitless. But maybe the lessons from English football this week highlight that, even when we have reached what we have always aimed for, the values that we hold and that have helped us to get there are put to the ultimate test. I have no doubt that the bedrock of Glyn School is that it is a values-driven school and we all aspire to become better at meeting the values of the school. Upholding integrity and respect for ourselves and the school are paramount; values that will bode well for the future. For many of us, we are only custodians of the school for a short period of time, but the values that Glyn stands for will stay with us for the rest of our lives and prepare us for the ever-increasing challenges that lay ahead of us. We are all members of the Glyn Community and, however difficult it may seem, we must always do the right thing. Mr Batchelor, Deputy Headteacher

Glyn School - 90th Anniversary 2017 will be an important year in Glyn School’s history, as we mark the 90th Anniversary of its founding. The Student Leadership Team has decided to organise a series of events across many subjects to commemorate this, and these will culminate in a formal evening event in the Sports Hall and The Chaloner Building on Thursday 30 March 2017 at 7pm. This event will feature live music from individual students, past and present, as well as poetry readings, small drama productions, art displays and technological demonstrations. Audience members, of which around 1,000 will be invited, will walk between the different exhibits in a manner similar to the annual Creative Arts’ Evening. This unprecedented event will aim to emphasise the timelessness of our school, and so the

inclusion of former Glyn students is hugely important in these celebrations. If you are in touch with any former students, please encourage them to contact the school if they would be interested in participating in the evening event, whether with a musical performance, poetry reading, original piece of art or a recollection of outstanding memories of your time at Glyn. From this expression of interest, the Student Leadership Team will work with senior staff to select the most appropriate acts for the event. Former students who would like to be involved in this event with a performance, reading or display, should contact [email protected] by Monday 31 October 2016 with their name, address, telephone number and a short description of their intended activity. We will then respond before the end of the Autumn Term. 2017 will be a thoroughly exciting year for the school, and we look forward to welcoming many former students back to commemorate the fantastic contribution Glyn School has made to the local area. Jack Pepper and Olivia Buckley, Head Boy and Head Girl 2016-2017

Drama Workshop Success - Frantic Assembly On Monday evening, Years 12 and 13 Drama students took part in a workshop with Steve Kirkham from Frantic Assembly. This workshop allowed them to explore the process of devising a story using movement.

Frantic Assembly are a world-renowned company who have c r e a t e d s o m e a m a z i n g contemporary theatre in the past 20 years, most notably: Love Song, Beautiful Burnout and Pool, No Water. Their current production, ‘Things I Know to be True’, was seen by the students last week at the Lyric in Hammersmith. Mr Beaney, Head of Drama

Reminder - Individual School Photographs - 6 October All students who had their individual school photograph taken on Monday 5 September should now have received a proof and details of how to order photographs directly from the photographers, Nik Bartram Photography. We would like to remind you that the deadline for obtaining a 10% discount is Thursday 6 October.

Glyn Reading Passports - New Initiative We have started a new initiative this year to encourage Year 7 students to get into reading. Research shows that reading for pleasure has an enormous impact on attainment of all students, no matter what their background or previous achievement; to tap into this we’ve developed the Glyn Reading Passport. Students should have their passport with them every time they sit down to read; it contains space for them to make notes, write down interesting quotes and new words. The passports will be issued to students at the beginning of next week. Happy Reading! Mr Peel,

Nut Allergies We have a number of Sixth Form students who are highly allergic to nuts. In the most severe cases, the allergy can be triggered off with just air-born particles if someone is or was eating nuts anywhere in the room. I am sure you can appreciate the severity of such an allergy and the potential devastating consequences. As a result, please ensure that you do not bring any kind of nuts into school. Thank you for your understanding. Miss Mayaire, Assistant Headteacher, Head of Sixth Form Studies

The LRC Book of the Week - Stars by Antony Lishak It is September 1939 in Warsaw. Stefan and Marcus are 12 years old and are best friends and the zoo is their playground. Stefan lives with his family at the zoo and has grown up with the animals and their keepers. But Marcus is Jewish and when Nazi troops invade Warsaw their world is torn apart. At enormous risk, their fathers devise a wild scheme to protect Stefan's family and other Jews. This story was inspired by the fact that hundreds of Polish Jews found shelter in the abandoned cages and underground rooms of Warsaw Zoo. It is a story of courage and hope in the face of adversity. “This is a very good story based in World War II. The two main characters are called Marcus and Stefan but Marcus is Jewish and in danger when the Nazis invade. It is pretty exciting. I would definitely recommend this book.” Adam Crawford 8 Merton Available to borrow from the LRC!

Whole School Production 2017 - ‘Little Shop of Horrors!’ I am delighted and excited to let you know that the 2017 Whole School Production will be ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. This will be the first whole school musical in over five years and we would like to have a large cast for a spectacular show. ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ tells the story of a strange and mysterious plant that suddenly appears in poor, innocent Seymour’s life. The plant makes the shop he works in (Mr Mushnik’s Flower Emporium) hugely successful. Everything is going so well for Seymour; he’s suddenly popular, famous and rich, and even the fellow florist Audrey, who he has always desired, seems to be interested in him. However, there is one small flaw: the plant’s (aptly named Audrey 2) desire for blood. As Seymour becomes more desperate for his luck to continue and the plant to grow, he takes to killing in order to appease the plant’s blood-thirsty desire! The performance will take place in The Proctor Hall at Glyn School on 7, 8 and 9 February 2017. However, before curtain up on 7 February, we need lots of performers to audition for a part. Auditions - All students welcome! Auditions will take place on 12 and 13 October 2016. If you have any questions about the production or auditions, please email me at [email protected] or students can come to the Drama or Music departments for information. Mr Beaney, Head of Drama [email protected]

Chef of the Month - September 2016 Students have made a great start to the year in Food Technology and, to mark their hard work, we have decided to introduce a new monthly award: Chef of the Month! One student in each year group from Years 8 to 11 will be voted for each month and, as well as receiving achievement points, they will be entered into a draw for a recipe book with a winner picked at the end of each term. This month’s top chefs are: Year 8 Chef of the Month – David Kobi-Amanfi, 8 Oaks For working independently when making his fruity muffins. Year 9 Chef of the Month – Jack Scarlett, 9 Derby For being very conscientious and thorough with his cooking, and for always being quick to help other people if needed. Year 10 Chef of the Month – Benjamin Williams, 10 Bourne For making a great start to the new GCSE course in Food Preparation and Nutrition and for showing an excellent attitude towards his studies. Year 11 Chef of the Month – Benjamin Fry, 11 Merton For continuing to show an excellent attitude towards his studies and for making good pro-gress with his controlled assessment. Well done to all four students, and keep up the good work. Miss Owen

Reminder - Year 12 Textbooks – Please Pay by Monday 3 October In order to support the progress of our students, we would like to issue Year 12 students with a textbook for every subject they have chosen to study. This is a significant investment which we believe will have a very positive impact on students’ attainment. Whilst teaching methods have moved on over the years with teachers using a range of resources and no longer ‘teaching from a book’, we believe that textbooks still provide a very useful and reliable resource to students, particularly when working independently. We also recognise that many students are determined to use their Directed Studies time and non-timetabled sessions effectively yet do not always have access to relevant learning material. A textbook will ensure that they can review key content and complete practice activities and exercises independently at any given time and at their own pace. We would like to offer you the following alternatives:

Borrow the book by paying a non-refundable £10 per textbook which will allow your child to borrow the book for the duration of the A Level or BTEC course, for use at school and at home. As the book will remain the property of Glyn School, students will not be able to annotate it and it will need to be returned in an excellent condition at the end of the course. Please note that the school reserves the right to apply a financial penalty up to the value of the textbook if it is lost or returned in a condition that is deemed unacceptable.

Buy the book outright, often at a competitive price as we are able to place a large order with the publisher. Students in receipt of Post 16 Bursaries will be issued with textbooks that they will be able to keep and annotate. If no payments are made for your son or daughter, they will have access to a textbook whilst in school, but will not be able to take it home. Our Sixth Form Private Study is open before and after school, from 8am to 6pm, to allow students to complete their independent work. All payments, should be made via ParentPay where you will be able to select individual subjects and choose whether you wish to borrow or pay for the book outright. Please pay by Monday 3 October. We are hoping to distribute the books next week and your child will be asked to sign to confirm they have received the books. ParentPay queries should be directed to [email protected] or by calling Mrs Lowes on 0208 716 4938. If you would like to discuss any of the above further, please do not hesitate to contact me. Miss Mayaire, Head of Sixth Form [email protected]

New Initiative - Times Tables Rock Stars Times Tables Rock Stars has been launched at Glyn this year and we are pleased to see that everyone is really enjoying it. Developing fluency in times tables is absolutely key to building confidence in working with numbers. Times Tables Rock Stars provides a fun and engaging platform in which to improve speed and accuracy. All Year 7 students have been given a password and are completing one Times Tables Rock Stars lesson in an IT Room every fortnight. They are also invited to come along to Rock Gods Club after school every Monday. Some Maths classes in other year groups have been joining in during Maths lessons, too. All students are encouraged to practise at home, either on a computer or using the Times Tables Rock Stars app. Well done to all students who have taken part so far. Congratulations! Congratulations to the following students who have already achieved Rock Legend status:

James Puryer, Ryan Yuen, Samir Ali, Ahmed Al-Mukhtar, Adam Booth, Edward Thorp, Joel D'Souza, Joe Grieco and

Om Yadam

Special mention goes to Kim Kim in 7T who is already a Rock God, answering times tables questions in less than one second! Amazing!

If your son has not been given a login for Times Tables Rock Stars and would like to join in, please email me at

[email protected] to request one.

Paint it Black...or Yellow? New paints are looking good in their palettes ready for Years 7 and 8 students who will start painting over the coming weeks. Year 7 students will be painting in the style of Paul Cezanne and learning about colour theory, whilst Year 8 students will paint a still-life study and focus on accurate colour mixing. Good luck to all the students in their artistic endeavours from the Glyn Creative Arts Department. Miss Gascoigne, Art and Design

Christmas Fayre 2016 – Saturday 26 November We are now organising our Christmas Fayre which will be held on Saturday 26 November 2016 from 11am - 3pm at Glyn School. We already have a large variety of stalls booked and there will be something for everyone. If you would like to book a stall, or you know someone who would, please get in touch. The PSA will also be having a homemade cake stall this year. If you are willing to make something for the stall please get in touch. Please put the date in your diary; further details will follow nearer the time. Kings of Surrey Estate Agent Boards Kings of Surrey estate agents have again this year agreed to place their boards outside parents’ and carers’ houses advertising our fayre. They will make a donation to the Glyn PSA for every board which is put up. Last year we managed to place 52 boards and so far this year have 65. We are very grateful to Kings of Surrey for their donation. We are aiming for 80 boards this year. If you would be willing to have a board advertising our fayre put up outside your house, please do get in touch with us. Raffle Do you or your company have a prize that you would be willing to donate for our Christmas raffle? Please get in touch if you or your company are willing to make a donation. Matched Funding Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could double the money we make from the Glyn Christmas Fayre or one of our discos? Many companies offer their employees the chance to take part in a matched funding scheme. The company will provide additional funding to a good cause (usually on a £ for £ basis up to a maximum amount). Argos, Barclays, Boots, Citigroup, Ford, HBOS, J Sainsbury, KPMG, Legal & General, RBS, Tesco, Thames Water and Unilever are just a few companies that offer Matched Funding. Generally, the employee must have been involved in the fundraising event as a volunteer. For example, a parent or carer who works for a company that offers Matched Funding volunteers to work on the refreshment stall at the PSA Fayre. The profit made by the stall is £250. The parent’s or carer’s employer will then match this amount with a further £250 (assuming they offer a £ for £ match). The amount offered will vary depending on the organisation and conditions may apply. The PSA is a registered Charity. If you require further information, or work for a company that offers Matched Funding, please get in touch. Facebook The PSA Facebook page is the easiest place to see what's happening with the PSA. Posts from other parents and carers, second-hand uniform, events and general news are all listed: https:/ /www.facebook.com/groups/GlynSchoolPSA This year we also have Facebook groups for Year 7 and Sixth Form: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GlynPSA2016Year7/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/GlynSixthFormParents/ If you are unable to locate these groups on Facebook, please email us via [email protected] and we will send you the link. Off-Road Driver Training 16+ The PSA are very lucky to have been donated vouchers for RoadCraft Off-Road Driver Training held at Mole Business Park in Leatherhead on Sundays. This provides a course of junctions and road layout in a safe environment. These vouchers give 16 year olds the opportunity to start their driving practice before their 17th birthday. Training starts approximately a month before their 17th birthday. They don't even need to hold their provisional licence. The vouchers are only £60 and provide three hours off-road training. RoadCraft has been established for over 15 years, helping to qualify over 50 instructors and 1,000s of students with an ethos of teaching to a higher standard and safe driving for life, not just to pass the test. Their unique off-road course teaches students to handle the car confidently and to be prepared to start a safe and complete driving experience. Having the off-road course considerably reduces the number of hours needed for on-road lessons. Then, if you choose to commit to a course of 10 lessons on-road with Roadcraft, you will receive an additional hour off-road with a free lesson of 45 minutes on-road. RoadCraft lessons are £230 for 10 lessons. They also have both male and female instructors. Other driving schools are charging £185 for this off-road driving. These vouchers make ideal presents and they are now available to any friends or family, as well as Glyn students. Please email [email protected] for more information. Glyn PSA [email protected]

Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Due to sports clashes, CCF will move days. We will now be parading on Thursdays instead of Mondays. We will be going to Freemen’s School, Ashtead. We will leave Glyn at 3.20pm and return at about 6.00pm. Students can also be collected from Freemen’s if that is easier for students and their families. There will be a camp from Monday 24 October to Thursday 27 October. The cost is £30.00 (cheque payable to CLFS). If there are any students who would like to join the CCF, please come to see me or contact me via email. Sqn Ldr Pearson [email protected]

Swimming and Diving - A Golden Day! Last Saturday proved ‘golden’ for those students involved in aquatics at the Spectrum, Guildford. Matthew Homes 11 Tudor competed in the Surrey Schools’ 1mtr Diving competition, winning gold in the Senior age group with his Reverse Somersault and Back Somersault gaining him his best marks. In the evening, it was the turn of the Glyn swimming team. The Junior team, made up of Year 7 and 8 students, were a little depleted in their race due to injury. Nevertheless, there were some good swims from Dylan Gall, Finley Phillips, Daniel Bennett, Adam Brooks and Ben Fitzgerald. In the Intermediates, the Year 10 team came in first, eight seconds clear of their nearest rivals; fantastic swims from Spencer Gall, Tom Rothwell, Cameron McKay and Luke Phillips. Unfortunately, a disqualification in the Medley means they only go through to the National Finals in the Freestyle. The Senior team were just touched out into second place in both the Freestyle and the Medley relay. Again, stunning swims from Sam Rothwell, Toby Payne, Adam Hinde and new student in the Sixth Form, Michael Rees. The boys will also go into the National Finals in November at the Olympic Park. Mrs Pearson and Mr Tanner

Basketball Glyn v Epsom College On Tuesday 27 September, Glyn Senior Team played a league basketball match against Epsom College away. The match was animated, to say the least, with plenty of baskets being scored by both sides. Glyn played exceptionally well for their first match of the season, but Epsom College were just too strong. The Epsom coach, and the referee of the game, was very clear about how he wanted the game to be played and, in the end, Epsom came out with the

win. Baskets were scored by all the Glyn team, with Alex Dale the top scorer. Harry Jayasuriya was awarded Man of The Match for his efforts in defence as well as scoring a couple of brilliant three point baskets. Final score: Glyn 26 vs. Epsom College 32. A huge thank you to Mrs Mabbott, Manager, and a special thanks to former Glyn student, Sam Brooker, for coaching us for the last few weeks. We wish him well as he now moves on to university. Team: Alex Dale (Captain), Harry Jayasuriya, Marcus Levett, Liam Summers, Danyal Dolatshahi, Harry Smith and Marco Pizzingrilli. Liam Summers 11A

Netball Report - Glyn v City of London Freemen’s School (CLFS) A Team Report The A team match started off slowly, which was expected as we had to get used to a new combination of players and positions. After the first quarter it stayed close and we managed to stick with Freemen’s fast play, even though we were down to six players due to an injury. Freemen's managed to pull away during the second quarter, despite our determination and levels of adrenalin, and the second quarter finished 6-3. Again, the third quarter saw some good middle-court play with our defenders managing to stay strong and get some good interceptions. We went into the final quarter feeling positive that we could reduce Freemen's lead. However, Freemen's

had some more goal opportunities and the final score was 9-6. Sadly, we were disappointed with the final score as it did not reflect our committed and talented play! Player of the match, as voted by CLFS, was Orla Jordan. Well done, girls; a great game. Orla Jordan, 12 Carew

B Team Report After we had got over the shock of the fact that we were at a school and not a National Trust owned mansion, (City of London Freemen’s is beautiful!) we were all eager to have a good match. The promise of free sandwiches and a flapjack after the match also gave us the determination to play well! Due to CLFS being a private school, we gathered that the opposition were all 'ballers' (in both senses of the word) very swiftly. Once we had actually started the netball match (which I now realise this report is supposed to be about...), we were demonstrating some good play and were at a score of 5-1 by the end of the first quarter. Our determination now was focused on maintaining our position and not allowing Freemen's to score any

more. The team’s play continued strongly, with spirits high, and we finished with a 7-4 win for Glyn! A big congratulations to Emily Planeta-Paine who was awarded Player of the Match for her excellent WA skills and incredible ability to whack the ball back on court into (occasionally) the correct team’s hands. Overall, it was a very successful and enjoyable match. (PS. The sandwiches were quite nice in my professional food-eating opinion!) Gemma Gosden, 12 Carew C Team Report

On Wednesday afternoon, Glyn Netball C team played our debut match against three different City of London Freemen’s C teams. It was an exhausting few matches, mainly due to us competing against three opposing teams in quick succession. Undeterred, and even after an initial injury, our determination didn't falter. Though we ended up losing our matches, we all had a brilliant time and our team work developed. Our Player of the Match was Nadia Giorgi. She was extremely persistent in her efforts and managed to score a goal against a difficult team of defenders. We all look forward to our next match together. Well done, girls! On behalf of all three teams, we

would like to thank our Manager, Mrs Mabbott, for driving the minibus and refereeing, and a special thank you to Miss Clare for her support and refereeing. Zoe Cooke, 12C2

Sportsmen of the Week - Joe Wright 12T and James Peters 12M Joe and James have been instrumental in the development of the Glyn Rugby Academy. They are valuable cogs in the development of young coaches in Years 12 and 13, and regularly support school teams both midweek and at weekends. James and Joe link up with the senior academy coaches in the Sixth Form and ensure that they are ready for the sessions on Monday evenings. It is clear that both students have a calling towards coaching and hopefully they will complete their Rugby Ready, Scrum Factory, as well as their Level

1 by the end of next year. Joe and James will also be taking part in a first aid course to support their teams on Saturdays. The list of accolades also continues with these two students as they have helped develop the U18 2nd team and are the coaches for the team on match days; a side that has not graced Priest Hill in nearly 18 years. Joe and James are to be commended on their dedication to rugby at Glyn. Well done to them, both. Mr Hawkes, KS3 Coordinator PE, Rugby Academy Leader

The early exchanges saw Egham dominate possession and territory, but it was the OGs, playing in their 10th season, who got on the scoreboard first with a stunning solo effort from speedy number 11, Phil Garrett. That gave the home side considerable confidence and they started to put together a string of phases, starving Egham of the ball and allowing fly-half Jon Yates to pull the strings. And it was Yates who had a match to remember with a hat-trick of tries, two of which came in the first half. Old Glynonians Captain, Thomas Marriott, said: "There were plenty of unknowns heading into our first game of the season, but we've canned any apprehension and hit the ground running. We've been training hard over the summer and it was really pleasing to see a combination of new blood and old heads perform so well as a XV on the pitch.” The other first-half try scorer was Matt Duncan, a debutant, who put in a fantastic shift for the full 80 minutes and stamped his mark on proceedings. The OGs went into the break a well deserved 24-0 up and they continued their dominance in the second stanza with Yates going over for his hat-trick try after an audacious chip and chase. With Glyn so far in front, the game hit a bit of a lull and the home side's intensity dropped, allowing Egham to score two tries in the final 15 minutes. It mattered not though as Glyn saw out the rest of the match comfortably and will be pleased to have such a positive start to life in Surrey 4. Marriott, added: "A 20 point victory over Egham is a very solid start to the campaign. We have things to work on, though, and we must build on this performance with a tough trip to Carshalton and Mitcham this coming Saturday.” On Saturday 1 October Old Glynonians will visit Carshalton and Mitcham ; a feisty renewal of last season's Surrey 3 rivalry is expected.
