Gisborne Secondary College values respect, diversity, innovation and achievement. Through a wide range of learning opportunities, students develop fulfilling and independent lives.

Congratulations to Sassafras Gallus of Y11 who undertook Unit 3 & 4 of Studio Art this

year. Her work has been accepted into the Next Gen Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

The Next Gen Exhibition showcases the achievements of regional students from Government and Independent schools mainly from the Ballarat and Grampians regions, who have just completed VCE in Art, Studio Arts, Design and Technology, Visual Communication and Design and Media.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear families

This will be my last newsletter for 2017, and my last newsletter as Principal of Gisborne

Secondary College. My sincere thanks to you all for your support, feedback and partnership

over the last four and half years.

I’d like to thank our College Captains this year - Dean, Candice, Bridie and Fynn – for their

work in our school community, but also the wider Macedon Ranges community over the last

12 months. To our wider senior leadership team; Natasha, Jhai, Kyle, Bonnie, Olivia, Emily,

Angel, Alex, Tim, Iris, Brendan, Jarod, Cassidy and Teagan - a huge thank you to you each for your dedication and commitment to making Gisborne Secondary College the best school

in the district.

I’d like to thank our superb Education Support Staff for their work over 2017. The

contribution of these folk in many and varied roles ensures that our teachers can get on with

the complex work of teaching and learning; well supported and unfettered by constant distraction. You make our school tick.

Thank you to the terrific teaching staff I have worked with since starting here in 2013. I

have appreciated your willingness to try new things when you’ve been prepared to, and to

change even when you didn’t want to. I have an appreciation for how deeply you care and worry about the progress of the students at this college.

Please join me in farewelling, and wishing the best of luck to, the following:

Angela Narayan-Butler (Head of Science) is moving to a Leading Techer role at Kurunjang

College. Anish Lal (food technology, science) is moving to a position at Altona College. Joel McDougall is moving to a Mathematics teaching position at North Geelong College.

Sam Baryla (English) is moving to New South Wales. Jason Fisher (mathematics, project) is

returning after a year’s contract to Riddells Creek Primary School. Rebecca Koroneos

(drama) is moving to a teaching position at Melton Secondary College. Nicole Eddy (English)

is taking up a teaching position at Werribee Secondary. We would like to thank these awesome people for their passionate work over their time at the college.

We are super excited about our Awards & Presentation Evening next Wednesday

(20 December 7.00pm, Barcham Theatre). This is always a highlight of the academic year,

and a magnificent opportunity to acknowledge our high performing students across all subjects. We will also be presenting our top Year 12 Awardees and our College Dux.

Next week is activities week at school, and while the college is open, we understand that

many parents have chosen to let their children start holidays early. With this in mind, and

also acknowledging that final assessments and curriculum outcomes are now complete and

in Semester Two reports (they’ll be published on Xuno on Tuesday), we will be providing a reduced curriculum program that provides a range of fun learning activities that allows

students and teachers to connect, but that are not always closely coupled with the standard

curriculum. The final day of the school year is Friday 22 December and we will dismiss

students at 12.30pm.

All that remains is for me to wish all students, family and staff a wonderful holiday break

and festive season. Please be careful on the roads if you’re travelling, and near the water if

you’re boating or swimming.

Take care of yourselves and your families… I’ll see ya ‘round!

GSC Movember Team

Good morning all,

Just thought I would pass on some information about our Movember fundraising efforts in 2017!

We set ourselves a target to beat our 2016 total of $620 and I am proud to say in 2017 we raised $776! Bringing GSC’s total to $1396 raised for the Movember Foundation!

https://moteam.co/gisborne-secondary-college

Movember is something many staff are passionate about at GSC and we hope to continue to raise funds and awareness within our community.

Our main aim is to raise awareness amongst our young people about men’s health issues and create a culture where men and boys take action to be mentally healthy and well, and are supported by their friends, family and community during tough times.

The Gisborne Secondary College Movember Team would like to thanks all staff, students and the community for their support for such a great cause!

In 2019 we will be back with bigger and better stashes (hopefully)!!

Thanks again

THE STAFF

On Tuesday our Year 8 students participated in Self-Defence workshops taught by Michelle

Voght (Macedon Ranges Taekwondo.) Michelle focused on personal safety, emphasizing

awareness and defensive skills.

On behalf the Year 8s I would like to take the opportunity to thanks Michelle for giving her

time to work with our students. Teacher and student feedback was very positive about the

sessions.

FAREWELLS

We also farewell Rachael Warren, who has been with us Term 4 replacing Dale Barry.

Rachael has done a great job in the short term working with Year 7, 8 and Year 11

students. We wish her all the best as she takes up a position at Bendigo South East

Secondary College (a significantly reduced travel time allowing more time for her

family/herself!).

I need to thank Ms Eley and Ms Sexton for filling in as Science Curriculum Area Leader

in my absence. They have done a great job.

Next year will see the return of Mr Barry & Ms Hughes as they return from long service

leave.

This is my last Science News. After 15 years at GSC, I have accepted a leadership

position at Kurunjang Secondary College. It has been a privilege working with so many

young people (and more frequently children of past students!) since 2001. I have had

great joy working in PE, Maths, Integration and Science. I have enjoyed the wonderful

support of many parents over the years and thoroughly enjoyed catching up during

parent teacher interviews. It’s been great hearing of the pursuits and achievements of

our past students. Our students have so much potential. Thanks for supporting the

opportunities and competitions. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New

Year.

World Challenge Update

Bright eyed, eager and not entirely knowing the sweat and hard work that lay ahead, our

group of students waved goodbye to the civilisation of Siem Reap, Makak bound. A small,

Cambodian village where their community project would begin.

The students were greeted with warm hugs, big smiles and an incredibly simplistic

(bordering on overwhelmingly different) way of life. Over their time in Makak, our

students came to adapt well; from showering in a bucket of water, eating rice at every

meal, using squat toilets and sleeping under mosquito nets in a room of 16 others.

When they weren’t dreaming of their next meal (and...after rice was served, discussing

how they could make it taste different from the meal prior) they worked alongside a

couple of local teachers, villagers and hundreds of Primary school students (celebrity

status was quickly granted to the visiting clientele) to build a wall at the rear of Makak

Primary school. The wall was intended to prevent both animals entering the school and the primary students running into the nearby dam.

For 7 days, the Gisborne Challengers mixed cement, dug trenches, carried sand, collected

stones, moved stones, lay bricks, mixed more cement and without realising, provided an optimistic outlook on life for the locals.

The extent of what our Gisborne students were able to achieve in seven days, was mind

blowing and something they are all incredibly proud of.

Our first of two jungle treks begins today.

Cheers,

Emily
