Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers
As always it has been a very busy final few days of the academic year and students
and staff have had an exciting and fun packed week of activities to end the year. On
Monday students had a wonderful time on the ‘Big Day Out’ at Drayton Manor,
Alton Towers and Delta Force Paint Balling or for those students who remained in
school the ‘Big Day In’. On Tuesday we had our Retreat and Charity Afternoon.
After a morning focusing on ‘Solidarity’ students spent the afternoon raising money on the different activities organised by staff.
On Wednesday we students took part in our annual school Sports Day with some outstanding performances from lots of
students and school records broken. It was a beautiful day and students enjoyed their ice creams as they watched the different
events - including the staff relay teams losing out to some strong student relay teams! On Thursday we had an excellent sports
assembly and today students spent the morning making memories. We finished the academic year with our wonderful Mass of
Thanksgiving led by Fr Pat before very excited students were dismissed for the summer holidays!
Staff Leaving - At the end of the academic year we say goodbye to staff who are leaving us. We
thank all of the following staff for their contribution to our school and wish them every success,
good health and happiness in the future. We are very, very sad that Mrs Pauline Mohan, our
wonderful school receptionist, has decided to retire after 33 years of dedicated service to our
whole school community. On Tuesday afternoon, staff (past and present), governors, Pauline’s
family all gathered to celebrate Mass for Pauline. Thank you to celebrants Fr Pat, Canon Tom and
Fr Des. Pauline will be forever remembered for the warm and caring ethos she created in our
school. We wish Pauline a long and happy retirement. We are also very sad that Mrs Sarah Boyle,
Assistant Headteacher, leaves us after 16 years of wonderful service to take up the position of
Deputy Headteacher at Bishop Ullathorne. From Science we say farewell to Mrs Kay Griffin
who has worked at Cardinal Newman for 10 years, Mr Lee Beasmore, Mr Greg Tomlin and Mr
Kevin Caldwell. Mr Alistair Davies leaves our Mathematics Department to work at Kenilworth
School, Miss Christina McLaughlin, Head of Geography, is moving to CWA as Head of Geogra-
phy, Miss Frankie Rimmer, Head of Drama, is relocating to Liverpool to be closer to home, Mr
Tom Walton from D&T leaves us to join WMG Solihull, Mr Demo Oni, Head of Computer
Science, leaves us to join an independent school overseeing IT and Miss Nicola Sykes who has
been covering maternity leave in PElaves us to become Head of PE at Heart of England school..
Young Performer of the Year - Congratulations to Diego Villarreal (9EHN) who was the
winner of this year’s Young Performer of the Year for his drum solo. The competition took place in school
last Friday afternoon with many outstanding performances.
Battlefields Trip - During the early hours of Wednesday morning a group of 43 students left Cardinal
Newman to visit the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. Students will visit Ypres and explore
some of the battlefield sites of the First World War and then move onto Normandy to explore where a
key turning point of the Second World War took place. Students return to school during the early hours
of Saturday morning. We look forward to hearing about their trip in the new school year.
New Gate Times - Over the last few weeks we have improved the security to make our large site as safe
as possible. As a result we have reviewed the opening times of the school gates and these will be shared
with parents in September. Please note that the main entrance gates and the Cinder Path will be open from
7.30am and the Tanworth Rd gate will not open until 8am in the morning.
New Menu - From September 2018 a new menu and prices will be available in the canteens. The new menu and prices can be
viewed via the following link http://www.cncs.school/School-Menus. Unfortunately some prices have been increased.
Thank you for all your support this year and I hope you all have wonderful summer,
Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher
Prayer for the end of the School Year
We praise and thank you God for the gift of this school
year.
It has been a time filled with grace and blessings,
With challenges and opportunities, joys and sorrows.
Give us the rest and refreshment we need this summer.
Let our efforts of this past year bear fruit.
Bring all of our plans to a joyful conclusion,
And bless us, according to your will.
Help us return to school with a new spirit and a new energy.
Amen.

Stem Club
For the final few weeks of term, STEM Club have
moved away from our anatomy work and into
astronomy based areas. Discoveries in recent years by
probes that have visited comets have revealed much
more clearly the make-up of the solar system’s
‘dirty snowballs’. So using some guidance from
ESA, we made our own model comets by mixing
together in appropriate portions, ammonia, soil,
water, a few organics, and dry ice. This resulted in
a number of groups successfully producing a
‘comet’ with vapour trails emerging from it.
For our last STEM Club of the school year, we went
back to one of the popular activities from 2017-18,
that is making and flying model rockets. Having done
some quick assembly work, we went out to the fields
to do three successful launches of the rockets that
had been made. These provided some nice souvenirs
for students to take home of the work they had done
over the past year.
Mr G Tomlin, Science Department
