He claimed to have learned to play the banjo from local African- Americans, and is the earliest documented white banjo player, and the earliest known person to have played the banjo on stage. His younger brothers Sam and Dick, and his sister Missouri were also talented banjo and fiddle players. After Joe’s death in October of 1860, his brother Sam Sweeney enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving in Company H of the 2nd Virginia Calvary. This is when his banjo playing came to the attention of Major General J.E.B Stuart. Sam’s signature song was “Jine the Calvary”, new lyrics set to the already known song, “Down in Alabama.” Sam Sweeney died in January 1864..

Les Moore and his band of bluesmen have been singing and play-

ing music for a very long time Les a journeyman St Louis blues

player for over 20 years has relocated to southwest Virginia his

original home place He is a singer guitarist and harmonica player

His guitar style intersperses blues chords and jazz formations His

harmonica stylings intertwine the Midwest and Piedmont influences

he grew up listening to Les sings the blues jazz soul and even a

little country music His eclectic style has won him fans in Patrick

and Floyd County Roanoke and Greensboro and surrounding areas

Les Moore and his band members Top Greene (Big Bill) and Little

Bill Greene will be playing at the Rural Music Coalition scheduled for

March 14th from 6-9pm at the Historic Star Theatre in Stuart

MOZZARELLA STUFFED TURKEY BURGER

1 pound ground turkey 14 cup finely chopped scallions 2 tsp minced garlic 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp lemon zest 12 tsp dried oregano 12 tsp pepper 12 tsp salt divided 12 cup shredded mozzarella cheese divided 2 Tbsp finely chopped fresh basil 2 tsp olive oil 1 (8 ounce) jar marinara sauce divided 4 focaccia bread buns toasted In large bowl combine turkey scallions garlic Worcestershire sauce lemon zest oregano 12 tsp pepper and 14 tsp salt mix gently being careful not to over mix Form into 8 thin patties Combine 14 cup cheese and basil Place equal amount cheese mixture in center of 4 patties Cover with remaining patties and seal edges Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat Add burgers and cook 8 to 10 minutes turning once Remove and set aside Warm marinara and place 3 Tbsp on 1 side of bread Top with burger 3 additional Tbsp marinara and 1 Tbsp of remaining cheese

ing music for a very long time Les a journeyman St Louis blues

player for over 20 years has relocated to southwest Virginia his

original home place He is a singer guitarist and harmonica player

His guitar style intersperses blues chords and jazz formations His

harmonica stylings intertwine the Midwest and Piedmont influences

he grew up listening to Les sings the blues jazz soul and even a

little country music His eclectic style has won him fans in Patrick

and Floyd County Roanoke and Greensboro and surrounding areas

Bill Greene will be playing at the Rural Music Coalition scheduled for

MOZZARELLA STUFFED TURKEY BURGER

1 pound ground turkey 14 cup finely chopped scallions 2 tsp minced garlic 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp lemon zest 12 tsp dried oregano 12 tsp pepper 12 tsp salt divided 12 cup shredded mozzarella cheese divided 2 Tbsp finely chopped fresh basil 2 tsp olive oil 1 (8 ounce) jar marinara sauce divided 4 focaccia bread buns toasted In large bowl combine turkey scallions garlic Worcestershire sauce lemon zest oregano 12 tsp pepper and 14 tsp salt mix gently being careful not to over mix Form into 8 thin patties Combine 14 cup cheese and basil Place equal amount cheese mixture in center of 4 patties Cover with remaining patties and seal edges Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat Add burgers and cook 8 to 10 minutes turning once Remove and set aside Warm marinara and place 3 Tbsp on 1 side of bread Top with burger 3 additional Tbsp marinara and 1 Tbsp of remaining cheese
