May 13th, Spring 2011 Gradu-

ation, was an amazing day for over 75 Health and Kinesiolo-gy Students and over 300 proud parents, friends and loved ones. I can personally tell you it was also a very spe-cial day for the Faculty and Staff of the Department of

Health and Kinesiology.

Although the Department continues to grow each and every semester, it is still small enough for the Faculty and Students to build bonds that will last far longer than their

time here at UT Tyler.

For those of you that are ap-proaching graduation, look at your fellow students happy faces, for you are not that far

away yourself!! Dr. Marzilli

Since arriving at UT Tyler 3-

years ago, I have heard about

the “room” where the Hydro-

static Weighing Tank was

housed. I heard many horror

stories about it, but until just a

couple of weeks ago, I had

never actually seen it.

Upon seeing the room, I was

pleasantly surprised by both

the size of the room and the

quality of the Hydrostatic

Weighing Tank. Did it need

some work? YES! But more

importantly, did it have great

potential? YES!

Based on what I saw, we

have started preliminary

plans for the renovation of

this space to make it more

than just the “room” where

the Hydrostatic Weighing

Tank is housed, but create a

new Body Composition La-

boratory! This laboratory

would be a state of the art

facility where students will

learn and get hands on ex-

periences with multiple

types of body composition

measures.

The renovation includes the

creation of a wait-

ing room and

bathroom, new

carpet, and a new

fresh coat of paint.

I am hopeful that

this new laborato-

ry will be ready for

students to use

during the Fall

2011 semester. I

have included a

sketch of the antici-

pated renovations.

Wish us luck!

Under the supervision of Rebekah Grube, Head UT Tyler Athletic Trainer and Advisor to the Athletic Train-ing program, a group of students traveled to New Orleans for the National Athletic Trainers Association An-nual Meeting in June. This student trip is the 4th trip H&K students took this year. I think student travel is a great way for students to learn more about their perspective fields of study and I hope there is more travel in the years to come! Dr. Marzilli

Department Spotlight: Student Travel

Can you believe that we are already 1/2 through the summer? That is just amazing to me. For those of you that took advantage of the “Staying Con-nected” Summer Online program, well I hope it is going well for you!!! For everyone else, I hope you are getting ready for an exciting 2011-2012!!!

Ms. Rebekah Grube, BS, MS Head Athletic Trainer The University of Texas at Tyler Rebekah Grube and eight other BS Kinesiol-ogy Athletic Training Majors traveled to New Orleans for the National Athletic Train-ers Association Annual Meeting June 19th—

22nd. For many of you that don’t know, National and State meetings are a very important way for you to start networking and to stay up to date in the field of study. With over 30,000 mem-bers, the NATA annual meeting provides awesome opportunities to start creating your network. According to Rebekah, all the students really had a great time

and learned a lot from this meeting. One unexpected surprise

Was that one of our former H&K Graduate students was selected to present a case study at this

National Meeting.

Candace St. Julian presented a paper on supraventricular tachy-cardia in college female basket-ball athletes. “We are very

proud of Candace for being selected to present at the NATA convention,” said Rebekah Grube, UT Tyler’s head athletic trainer. “It is quite an honor and says a great deal about Can-dace’s knowledge and abilities.” Not only does it say a lot about Candace, but having former students give National presentations is awesome for our Department too! I hope

more of you do this in the years to come.

To make sure we have a greater presence at State and Nation-al meetings, I have asked the Faculty to provide me at least one meeting for Health, Kinesiology, Physical Education and Athlet-ic Training majors for the 2011-2012 academic year! I will make it my priority that you get to travel to these professiona

meetings and represent UT Tyler and the Department. Dr. Marzilli

Message From the Chair of Health and Kinesiology

I just wanted to use this month to share

with you a little about my vacation in Cali-

fornia with my Family. As many of you

know, my entire family lives in Southern

California. My family includes my Mom,

my Dad and my two brothers. Although I

would consider us very close, I have lived

away from my family now for almost 16

years! In fact, Texas is the closest I have

lived to my family in over 11 years.

Well I had the best 30 days imaginable. It

was amazing how important the little

things were to me. I was able to drive my

Mom to work every morning and meet her

for lunch every afternoon. My entire fami-

ly had dinner together almost every night!

It was kinda funny, I almost felt like I was

back in high school again, but this time,

unlike over 20 years ago, I savored every

minute of the time I got to spend with my

family. In fact, some of the most memora-

ble times were when we were just doing

the little things together. I can’t tell you

how amazing it felt to be home, to be with

my family, and to be able to create these

amazing memories!

I only share this with you because many of

you live very close to your parents and

family and you may be able to see them

each and every day. Take this time, take as

much time as you can, to spend with your

family and loved ones for tomorrow is

never promised to us! Anyway, I hope

you have a great 4th of July!!!

Tip of the Month I only have one tip for the month of

July and that is to stay COOL. After

spending 30 days in Southern Califor-

nia with an average temperature of

75 degrees, coming back to Tyler, TX

this month has been a killer. I honest-

ly thought that I was running slower

outside because my shoes were melt-

ing and sticking to the street!! Really,

105 degrees!! Anyway, find any fun

and exciting ways to stay cool this

summer and if you are going to exer-

cise outside, make sure you do it early

in the morning and stay hydrated!

Well, stay COOL this summer. Dr. Marzilli
