  • One of the tasks of any congregation during the interim period between installed pastors is to appreciate its heritage. Ocean View Presbyterian Church celebrated a significant part of its heritage when it invited Rev. Kerry Shull and his wife, Beverly, back to worship on May 3, 2015 for the dedication of a window

commemorating his 39 years of ministry at Ocean View. A coffee hour in honor of Kerry and Beverly followed.

For the benefit of those who did not attend those events, we publish the service of dedication.

    Gerald Egger, Interim Pastor

Dedication of a stained glass window,The Presbyterian Seal, commemorating the ministry of Kerry R. Shull May 3, 2015

Ocean View Presbyterian Church Ocean View, Delaware

STATEMENTS OF INTENTION ▪ In commissioning a window to the glory of God from the craftsmen Debra & David Doucette in

Millsboro at D&D Stained Glass, the congregation intends to gratefully acknowledge the long and fruitful ministry of Rev. Kerry Shull.

    ▪ Moreover, the congregation intends to commemorate its long and fruitful relationship with its denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA), by fashioning a representation in glass of the Presbyterian Seal.

    ▪ The congregation is intent on accepting the responsibility of protecting and caring for this and all other dedicated furnishings in our sanctuary and other buildings.

▪Now that the time has come to dedicate the finished window, the congregation intends to become acquainted with the rich symbolism inherent in the Seal, which fittingly celebrates the values and priorities of Rev. Kerry Shull. Let’s begin this service of dedication with appropriate words from scripture. You may wish to turn so you can see the window directly, and refer to the pictures on the insert.

SCRIPTURE READINGS 1.The Presbyterian Seal owes its overall shape and proportions to the cross, specifically the Celtic cross, the most ecumenical symbol of Christian faith. In his active ministry, Kerry Shull was a passionate champion of the Cross.

So was the Apostle Paul, who wrote in 1 Corinthians 1, 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. 18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

    2. The Presbyterian Seal stylizes the horizontal bar of the cross as an open book, specifically an open Bible, celebrating the Reformed Tradition’s emphasis on Scripture as a means of grace. In his active ministry, Kerry Shull never tired of studying and powerfully interpreting the words of Scripture. As Psalm 119says, 103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

    3. The Gospel of Matthew tells us: 13 Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him.
16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.
17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’

The Presbyterian Seal transforms the uppermost section of the cross into the shape of a descending dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. The dove also reminds us of baptism, one of our sacraments. In his active ministry, Kerry Shull drew inspiration from the Holy Spirit and faithfully executed the sacraments.

    PRAYER OF DEDICATION

Let us pray together the prayer in your bulletin insert. Eternal God, we do not live by bread alone,
but by every Word that comes from your mouth. Through scripture enlivened by your Holy Spirit,
you enlighten all with your truth. When we look at the symbols crafted in this window,
we pray your Word will grow in our hearts as good seed,
yielding a harvest of justice, mercy, and love. Let all who hear your Word be renewed in faith and
strengthened in service as Christ’s disciples in the world. Trusting in the power of your church as a force for good,
we dedicate this Window to the proclamation of the Gospel,
in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

    PRESENTATION OF LOVE GIFTS

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Let us pray. God of word and cross, of water and table, of Spirit and service, we thank you for the ministry in this congregation of Kerry R. Shull. We honor the truths of his teachings. We are grateful for his pastoral care. As Kerry delighted and warmed generations of Christians,
may the light and color of this window delight the eye and warm the heart
of everyone who sees it. With gratitude and praise, we pray in the name of our Risen Savior,
Jesus Christ. Amen.

Kerry, we have traveled a lot of miles at OVPC—even hit a few bumps.

However, during your time here,  you have constantly preached COMMUNITY—a Community of God’s people—with a purpose!

And now we are traveling with a new driver,  keeping on keeping on………….

God bless you and yours and thank you for bringing us to a junction in the road from which we are able to  move onward.

This year the walk raised $20,500.

Of that OVPC  raised $950 on line and $3,865 in cash and checks, for a total of $4,815.

25% of the money collected will be going to the Pyle Center in Roxanna. Part of their mission is a food pantry and preparing and

delivering Meals on Wheels. The rest of the money will be used by CWS to support their mission both here at home and around the world.

On behalf of World Church Services and OVPC, I want to say a big thank you to all who supported the walk, both the walkers and those who sponsored them. Because of you it will help make a difference for the good in some people’s lives by helping to provide clean water and food.

Fourteen people joined facilitator Bev Bailey in the Sanctuary after worship on May 17 for “Prayer Time”. This is a time set aside for prayer for ourselves and others, learning more about prayer, and ways of making prayer a more integral part of each day. The group will be looking at the book, “Help, Thanks, Wow” by Anne LaMott. It can be purchased on Amazon.com for as little as $2.32. Please read the chapter called “Help” for next month. The group also decided to meet once a month on the third Sunday of each month after worship, except for June. In June we will meet on June 14, due to Father’s Day on the third Sunday. So mark your calendars if you want an hour of quiet discussion about prayer and ways of being in conversation with our God.

    Deacons Report Jane Sergison

The Deacons met on May 6th and the following areas where discussed.

Pyle Center: Seven bags of food were delivered in the month of May. I am still trying to meet with the director at the center to see if they have any special needs that we need to address.

Members in need: Grayson Wheatley - Sue Baer has been in touch with them and they will call if they have  needs.

Elsie Young - She has been to Church service with her friend from Ohio.

Phil Hamilton - Cards would be welcome. He still is having a problem with his eye.

The deacons will be getting a list together of members who would wish to have communion at their home. If you know someone we need to serve please contact us.

The deacons are listed on the back of your bulletin.

Session Report Karen Colwill, Clerk of Session

    • Session met on Monday evening, May 11, 2015, at the home of Elsie Young. The meeting was opened at 7:00pm with prayer and devotions offered by Pastor Jerry.

    • Lorie Hartsig offered the annual report for the Sewing Circle. Lorie reported that as of that day enough money had been raised for a 7th well for the water4 mission and that planning is still on track for the fund raising concert by the Reminders in August. Lorie also reviewed the most recent mission – the PDA hygiene kit collection that will run through Father’s Day. Session commended the Sewing Circle for it’s continued excellent works and thanked Lorie for her report.

    • Motions were made, seconded, and passed to accept the minutes from the previous Session meetings, the Clerk’s report, and the Treasurers report.

    • Pastor Jerry reported that the second part of interim training he attended was very insightful and he learned a great deal.

    • Discussion was held regarding offering another CPR Certification course in the fall. • It was decided that the 40% portion of the Pentecost offering to be used by OVPC

will be earmarked for the Ocean View Cheer Center – specifically their Meals on Wheels program.

    • We agreed to accept the gift of a decorative stand to hold the Christ candle during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

    • A motion was made, seconded and passed to act as host for a celebration to be held at the Blackwater Presbyterian Church cemetery on July 8th to introduce the project to renovate that historic site.

    • The meeting was adjourned with prayer at 8:43 pm

    Sewing Circle Amy Peoples

This will be the last Circle letter until fall so there are dates to be put on your calendar. At OVPC we don’t stop for warm weather. There are many activities scheduled that you won’t want to miss.

June 1, The” Yarn” Group will meet from 10-2 in Fellowship Hall. Bring a lunch and join them making Prayer Shawls. Even if you cannot knit or crochet you are welcome to attend, they will teach you how.

Our Sewing Circle will meet Wednesday, June 10 at 12 noon. This is our last meeting till fall and we are asked to bring a covered dish to share and the Executive Committee will furnish refreshments and dessert.

There will not be a Bible Study during the meeting since we have finished the series of lessons in our Study Book. Please let Liz know if you need a Study Book for next Bible Study. The next study will be “Come to the Waters”. Water is the universal theme of the study and the Bible, which is apropos for us with our ongoing Water4 project. We found at the May Circle meeting that we are now on our seventh well.

Please mark your calendar for Friday, August 28 at 7 PM, when we will have our fundraiser for Water4 with the musical group “The Reminders” performing. Tickets will be on sale for $15 each, beginning July 1 after church services and at the Heavenly Luncheon. We are also pleased that Jim Stewart from Water4 will be with us the weekend of the concert.

On Sunday, June 21, there will be a special Coffee Hour to honor the men of the church on Father’s Day.

Father’s Day Sunday is the final day to bring the items for the” Gift of the Heart Kits” hygiene kits. The items needed are printed in the church bulletin each week. These hygiene kits are in demand by communities affected adversely by crisis and catastrophic events.

On July 22 and 23 we will once again have our special Heavenly Luncheon in conjunction with the South Coastal Library House Tour. This is a big event for the Sewing Circle and we need helpers from the entire church. When you are asked to help we hope you will say yes, with a willing heart. It takes many hands to make this a success and you all are needed. It is a week-long project starting off with Monday when the chicken is picked up, Tuesday’s chopping and table setting, to the two days of the event.

The Presbyterian Women of the New Castle Presbytery will have their Fall Gathering at Dover Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 24, with topic being “Effective Everyday Evangelism”. The Sewing Circle has been asked to furnish some sandwiches. Hope some of you will decide to attend this gathering. More information will be available nearer the date.

I hope you will each have a very fine summer and that you will join in the many Sewing Circle events.

    Thank You Kerry Shull

I was so overwhelmed on May 3rd, not only by the dedication service for the window, but by the entire service. After a year, it was wonderful to return. How exciting to see both familiar and new faces. You are truly blessed to have the leadership you have. Pastor Gerry does such a great job in the pulpit; I was truly fed. The choir was phenomenal. (By the way, the anthem will be perfect for a service of ordination/installation.) I love the window; for something so beautiful it is also rich in meaning. Thank you all for such an incredible tribute. Thank you as well for the gift. (Since I am seeking opportunities to lead Bible study, the gift was put toward the upgrading of my Bible software.) I miss you all, so keep in touch.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. It enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crises and catastrophic events. One of the ways that congregations can get involved in a tangible way to is to create “Gift of the Heart Kits”. These kits are distributed by PDA where they are most needed in the world, both nationally and internationally. Hygiene Kits are often the most in demand, so the Circle Mission Committee would like to announce a spring project that entails the collection of these kits. We would like to encourage the congregation to create Hygiene kits at home and bring them to church on Sunday mornings from May 10th through June 21st. PDA is very specific about the items to be contained in these kits, so we have provided a detailed list for your use. There will be a collection box in the back of the Sanctuary clearly marked, “Gift of the Heart Kits”.

Hygiene Kit 1 — hand towel (approximately 16" x 28", no fingertip or bath towels)

    1 — washcloth

    1 — wide-tooth comb (remove from package)

1 — nail clipper (no metal files or emery boards; remove from package)

1 — bar of soap (bath size in wrapper)

1 — toothbrush (in original packaging)

6 — Band-Aids® or other adhesive bandage strips

Please do not add toothpaste to the Hygiene Kit. Toothpaste which has an extended expiration date will be added to Hygiene Kit shipments just prior to shipment. Seal all items in a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure.

Join us Friday, June 5th for our monthly movie night. This month our movie will be hosted by Elaine and Bob Wolf. There will be a potluck supper beginning at 5:30 and the movie starting at 7:00.

This month’s requested feature is ‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’. This 2011 film, starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock is the story of a nine-year-old who searches New York City for the lock that matches a mysterious key left behind by his father, who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. During his scavenger hunt (something he did with his father when he was alive) Oskar keeps a scrapbook of his

adventure and the people that he encounters who help him learn more about himself and his family.

If you are interested in hosting movie night, or have a special movie request, please contact Bob Wolf.
