For over 50 years, the Church World Service and our Deacons Blanket/Tools program have helped in making life more bearable for those who have been affected by disasters, as well as those who just need a warm place to lay their head. Every $5 donated will purchase a blanket. We are also contributing to the “Tools” program which provides other emergency supplies such as boats, seeds, hoes, wells, water systems, etc.
A Parent’s love is a reflection of God’s unconditional love for each of us . . . . what a perfect Father’s Day gift!
Tools may be purchased in honor or in memory of a loved one.

Dear Friends!
June marks 25 years that I began working as your Pastor here at Youngstown First. Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun! And, for the most part, it has been fun. There have been so many joyful times: weddings, baptisms, anniversaries, and welcoming new members, among other celebrations.
There have also been times of sadness: illnesses, deaths, funerals, and divorces. Through it all, it has been a privilege to walk with you on our faith journey and past these milestones along the Way.
We’ve done a great deal of good work together in this community and beyond. Our congregation is a healthy, vibrant, welcoming community of faith and the word on the street bears that out.
I am thankful for the relationships we have nurtured as a church, and the relationships I have with you. I look forward to more years with you. (I pray that is good news to most of you!) Changes have been a part of our life together and will undoubtedly change will be in our future. It can’t be helped, the world around us is changing ever more rapidly and the church has always sought to be relevant to the real lives of people, responding to the pressing needs of the people and societies.
We are facing increasingly strong headwinds these days, and it will take our concerted efforts to present to the world God’s Love for all of creation, and all peoples and nations, regardless of race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, age, immigration status, and political affiliation. Too many voices, many of them among our Christian brothers and sisters, and some in the highest levels of governments here and abroad, say otherwise.
We know better. And as your Pastor, I will always seek to lead us to act in accordance with the love of God we know through our Sovereign Lord, Jesus.
Yours in Christ’s Love,
Rex T. StewartPastor

Hymn of the Month A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD The Marseillaise of the Reformation
OUT OF THE DEPTHS I CRY TO YOU (Lutheran) This hymn was sung at the funeral of Elector Frederick the Wise in Wittenberg in 1525, and at Halle in 1546 where Luther’s body lay in state on its way from Eisle-ben, where he died, to Wittenberg where his funeral would take place. It seems fitting to end the series on Luther with this hymn. Up until the time of Luther, all music sung in the church was in Latin. Translations of Latin works did not fit musically with the German language. Every Latin syllable is essentially the same length, whereas in Germanic languages, of which English is also one, the natural rhythm of the language is based on a stressed vowel sound and syllables of varying lengths. (Example, the word RHYTH-em.) Luther wanted to create a body of hymns of high quality that were suited to the language the people spoke, and fortunately, the dialect spoken in Saxony was understood in many other areas. Speaking of the challenge of composing these new hymns, Luther said: “Both the text and notes, accent, melody, and manner of rendering ought to grow out of the true mother tongue and its inflection.” This is a poetic rendition of a favorite Psalm of Luther’s, Psalm 130, and is considered one of his best. It is among the first hymns Luther wrote, and he is also credited with the tune, AUS TIEFER NOT. He sent copies of the text to his colleagues as a sample to encourage them to contribute Psalm-themed hymns in the German language. It was one of the eight hymns that comprised the first “hymn book” which was given to the choir to learn so the congregation could learn from the choir. Luther also found this hymn a source of comfort throughout his life. During periods of stress, he would pick up his lute and invite others to join him as he sought encouragement in its words. The singing of this hymn was noted particularly in 1530 during the six anxious months that he spent at Coburg Castle inside the borders of Saxony while his colleagues negotiated the future of the Reformation at the Diet of Augsburg.

This is a support group for people suffering from bereavement will be offered at First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church Street. The group will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 pm on Tuesdays.
The group will be led by Sister Colleen Shanahan from Stella Niagara. She says that the group will be based on Kubler-Ross’s “Five Stages of Death and Dying” and how that effects us physically, spiritually, mentally, and socially. Everything at the meetings will be confidential. We believe that healing comes in these sessions through (1) verbally expressing your own version of grief and (2) the support you find from others’ experience.
This is an ecumenical group, open to all people.
June meetings are Tuesday, June 5th, 12th, and 19th.
