December 2018
MESSAGE from our Chairlady
Sophie Walker
Members and friends, KSPCA thanks you for your support throughout the year. Without your desire for animals both furred and feathered, to have better lives, we would not operate. I think the sweetest donation I received this year was from a little girl. I was talking to her parents about some of the problems we had with raising money, she asked why we needed to raise money for animals, and I told her. She went and came back with a yoghurt pot where she stored her money, emptied it out and gave it all to me, it was 137 shillings. She has promised me next year’s savings as well. Every donation helps rescue and care for animals as far as we can reach. We wish you, your families and your animals a lovely Christmas filled with happiness and care.
ther than rescuing domestic animals, KSPCA also rescues Obirds. We were approached by K.I.C.C. to rescue some Marabou storks that had made their home in the trees at the K.I.C.C. compound. Since the trees needed to be cut down as a result of an upcoming conference, the birds were at the risk of dying. Enter the brave KSPCA inspectors! Up they go in the crane and high up into the trees to retrieve the young birds which were brought to the KSPCA for future release. Marabou storks are scavengers, and usually feed on carcasses and also on eggs, snakes, other small birds, and locusts. They are particular about the kind of trees they choose to have as their shelter. Usually they prefer thorny trees like acacia. They are quite amazing and can grow up to 152 cm high. They have a cooling mechanism that helps regulate their body temperature, a process termed as urohydosis, which can come in handy.

I represented the KSPCA at the the regional multi-stakeholder forum held in Ethiopia to discuss the challenge of donkey slaughter and skin trade. Donkeys are smuggled from Ethiopia and sold in the donkey slaughterhouses in Kenya. The donkeys go through cruelty throughout the transport and the whole process. Various animal welfare organizations led by the Donkey Sanctuary UK, in collaboration with the government, will be involved in various activities aimed at protecting the donkey populations in various affected countries. These will be aimed at ensuring the affected communities retain their source of livelihoods and the donkey populations are not diminished.

A lady came in to surrender 3 dogs because she said her husband had told her that he was being transferred up country and she wasn’t prepared to look after his dogs. We held our third craft fair at the Bahari Beach Hotel, and it had a great response. As we are a charitable organisation that relies solely on donations to support our operations we remain grateful for all who have continued to support us. When local community partners including Bahari Beach Hotel come together with events like this, it is always a win-win situation. We have very pressing needs such as funds for meeting our day to day operational costs and for purchase of veterinary drugs and vaccines. We also require funds to immediately embark on renovation works and paint one of the catteries. Income from the Craft Fair has been a huge help, but we always need more!.
