Terrific Tree Planting! Last week, a small group of children from each class in the school helped to create a new woodland on the school grounds. The Junior School and Infant School both took delivery of a total of 60 trees and 60 hedging plants, donated by The Woodland Trust as part of their ‘Free Trees for Schools’ campaign. With the kind help of Emily Chittenden, the children have planted the beginnings of a small wooded area at the far end of the playing fields, as well as filling in gaps in the hedging around the wildlife garden. As you will see from the photo, the children had a fabulous afternoon in glorious sunshine. For all involved, it was quite magical to be part of creating something which will hopefully be enjoyed by generations of Colman children for years to come. Those children not involved in the planting, will have chance to go and see the newly planted trees, and teachers have lots of plans to use the wildlife area over the next term. NB. Reading at Colman Readathon - Thank you! We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone for completing their readathon challenges. We have been overwhelmed by the children's commitment and enthusiasm in achieving the goals they set themselves. As well as promoting a love of reading, the event aimed to raise money for Clic Sargent and Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity. We are delighted to have raised a massive £1,838 for these worthy causes. All of this money will go to charity but Scholastic will provide the school with books for our school library to the value of 20% of this total, so look out for some exciting new books coming soon! World Book Day World Book Day 2015 was a huge success in school with teachers sharing favourite stories with each of the classes in a giant school story time. We were also visited by Norfolk Children's Book Centre, giving children the opportunity to redeem their World Book Day tokens and browse a huge range of children's literature. Library Drop-in Sessions

After Easter parents and carers are invited to drop into the school library on a Friday after school (3.15-3.45) if you would like to spend some time browsing books with your child or to support your child in changing their library book. Classes will continue to visit the library at least once a week but we hope this will be a valuable additional opportunity to visit our well-stocked library. KH

Start getting your passports up to date. Graduation is in June and Norfolk CU need to know your hours after the Easter holidays. Norfolk Libraries Children can earn one hour for every two books borrowed and read. Norfolk Museum Service CU passport holders can gain FREE entry. Find all the Norfolk Children’s Learning Destinations at http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/Childrens_services/Acitivities_for_children_and_young_people/Childrens_University/Learning_Destinations/NCC152989 If you are travelling out of Norfolk, check out the map for learning destinations across the UK.

4DG Dance Show 4DG are excited to be taking part in the Norwich School Sport Partnership Dance Show on 20th May. They have already begun the hard work to prepare and will be performing 'School’s out for Summer' in line with the beach party theme of the evening. The show is taking place at Open in the city with two performances at 4pm and 7pm. Tickets cost £5.50 for the matinee performance and £7.50 in the evening. A letter will be issued to pupils shortly, but for more information and to book tickets see Open's website:

Mathletics

Congratulations to Florence Robinson, Yosi-Junior Quayson & Mohammed Hamisa who have all amassed over 15,000 points each in Mathletics this term, a fantastic effort. Every week, as part of your child’s weekly homework, your child will be set tasks on Mathletics. This work is specifically set by teachers to support and consolidate their understanding of work completed in the classroom. If your child has lost their log-in details their class teacher would be happy to reissue a new log-in card. There are also Mathletics & Spellodrome lunchtime clubs for Lower & Upper School, on a Monday & Friday, should you be experiencing any difficulties logging in at home.

Red

Nose Day

Thank you to all the pupils, parents and staff who baked for our cake sale on Friday 13th March. School Council ran an upper and lower school cake stall during break-time, raising an amazing £181.78.

Governors’ News As many of you will be aware, Nick Southgate the Headteacher at Colman Infant School is leaving in December. He has been at the school for 12 years, and provided leadership and a sense of stability over that time. There will inevitably be a period of uncertainty whilst their governing body finds a suitable replacement. We will be working to ensure the good relationship between the schools is maintained, which is clearly in the best interests of the children.

The benefits of the curriculum changes introduced last year by Mrs Sandford are now clearly showing in the progress the children are making in both English and maths. In particular progress in writing, raised as an issue in the previous Ofsted inspection, is now significantly improved showing the benefits of introducing Big Writing. The changes being made to a more interesting theme-based curriculum, a major undertaking for the teaching staff this year, together with the improved progress are really positive signs for the future. Liam Dolder Chair of Governors'

Norfolk County Music Festival and

Central Area Schools’ Music Association Congratulations to children in Year 4 who performed at the NCMF recently, receiving a commended plus certificate? Also, children in Year 5 who sang in the CASMA concert at St Andrew’s Hall - your performances were amazing! Mrs Denton.

New Summer Menu for CJS

The school has been monitoring the new summer term menu provided by Norse. After consultation with our children, the Norse Area Manager and the ladies in the servery (who have been keeping records of wastage), it has been decided that a few alterations to the menu are necessary whilst still adhering to the new School Food Standards. Please find

attached a copy of the revised menu. All menus, including school packed lunches and jacket potatoes can be found on our website.

Attendance Cup Our school attendance cup is awarded to the class with the highest average attendance in

the previous half term.

There will be no lessons for any pupils during the week beginning 11th May due to the Year 6 SATs tests, also no lessons for Year 6 pupils attending CNS transition from 6th - 17th July.

Headlice Following a recent outbreak in school, please ensure that you check your child’s head regularly for nits and head lice as these spread very easily. Follow the link below for NHS advice: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Head-lice/Pages/Introduction.aspx

A few reminders... Polite Notice Parents have commented recently about smokers lighting up by the school gate. Whilst we appreciate that this is not on the school premises we feel that it sets a poor example to the children about healthy lifestyle choices. If you do smoke can we politely ask you to do so away from the children coming to & from school? Lost Property There is a very large amount of lost property in the basket in the school hall. Please have a look at the end of any school day for your child’s lost items.

After-School Clubs A new list will follow after the holiday. Posted on the website recently:

• Puppet making • Henri Rousseau studies • Crazy Hat and Hair Day • Red Nose Day • CASMA and much, much more.....

We are collecting:

• Active Kids Vouchers School Council are collecting Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers which will help us buy more indoor and outdoor play equipment for the school. We would be grateful for any vouchers you may have and a box is situated outside the library for collection. For your information please see: [email protected]

• Used inkjet/laser cartridges • Unwanted mobile phones • Clean clothes and rags in the outside

There are seven pots of plants in a greenhouse. They have lost their labels.

F and G have wide pots. Can you help label the plants? C, E and F have just one flower. B and D have tall pots. B and E have blue flowers. Can you do it?

In this maze there are numbers in each of the cells. You go through adding all the numbers that you pass. You may not go through any cell more than once. Can you find a way through in which the numbers add to exactly 100?
